Many of the editing choices were noticeable, sometimes that was a bad thing though. A comfortable outing by McQuarrie, Cruise, and crew. Final Reckoning isn't incredibly dissimilar from its predecessors but it offers an exceptional entry into the series. Mission Impossible remains the pinnacle of spectacle cinema.

Although this was supposedly the finale, I have a feeling we will see another film in this series eventually.

A superhero film about addiction and mental illness was not on my bingo card, especially by Marvel. Thunderbolts balances the signature Marvel quips with some legitimate tension and drama. The writing in this one is really bad, there are things that don't age well. Doug Jones is a great actor, and the rest of the cast are too but the material isn't very strong. It suffers from what most superhero genre films suffer from, rushing and an unorganized plot.

This story would've really benefitted from being split into two films. It would allow the Surfer and Doom storyline to breathe while teasing Galactus. It would've also benefitted the franchise because it would've given them time to do a proper Galactus portrayl in the third and final film. This film encapsulates the 2000s incredibly well. The consumerism, idolization of celebrities, and carelessness of America shine brightly in this sci-fi drama-comedy. While the side characters are written better here than the first, I still found the story to be a bit contrived. Also there are many tropes that The ant recycles that just hold the action genre back. I find the balance of comedy and calamity infectiously masterful. The writing in this film is fantastic, it feels like the script is only there to enhance further the action and drama displayed. I loved the cinematography as well, and the editing was worth noting, too! The editor bounces off the choices of the cinematographer and only cuts to a different shot when it serves the emotion of the scene, which I appreciated.

This film seemingly says a lot about America's greed and hunger for power. It is also about the power of perception and America's ability to hypnotize its citizens with propaganda. Kubrick was a genius. Every time I watch one of his films for the first time, I feel I have a new favorite.

I had to write a film analysis essay for my English class. I chose this film since I had seen it recently, loved it, and it fits the theme(s) I needed. Rewatched it today while I was writing it, if you enjoy reading longer reviews I'll leave it here:

Life Isn’t Fare: Exploring the Cost of Connection Between Worlds in Night on Earth

In the 1991 film Night on Earth, five cab rides across different countries become windows into the human experience. Each story captures a fleeting moment of intimacy within, revealing how humor and heartbreak exist side-by-side in everyday life. The film explores how success and failure are deeply personal, yet surprisingly similar across cultures. Within each individual’s life, we learn what is important to them, through that we can gain a clearer understanding as to what success and failure means to them. When we learn who is important to each individual, we can learn what comedy and tragedy means to them as well.

The idea of success and failure being relative reminded me of a line from the song Numb by Linkin Park: “All I want to do is be more like me and be less like you.” To be successful in any field, it is often thought that sticking to your values and morals will take you a long way. To be unequivocally moved by anyone’s expectations of you, and who you’re supposed to be. That would describe Corky, who is the first character that we meet. She is a young cab driver who is dropping off two intoxicated males at the airport. She is both quite focused on her job as a driver, and curious about who her customers are. Victoria Snelling is a casting agent for a Hollywood movie studio. She has just arrived at LAX from a flight, and she needs a ride. Corky has a tomboyish personality about her, not afraid to get her hands dirty, while Victoria Snelling is used to her Hollywood lifestyle, a bit fancy and pretentious. As Corky drives to Beverly Hills the conversation between these two becomes more dramatic. Victoria gets off the phone frustrated about her boyfriend and her job. Corky offers a bit of levity to ease Victoria’s feelings, “Guys, can’t live with em, can’t shoot em” (Night on Earth). Corky is constantly either smoking a cigarette or chewing gum, she has one sitting on her ear then reaches into the pack to light up a new one without even thinking about it. Corky helps light Victoria’s cigarette and then Victoria asks, “You’re really happy driving this taxi, aren’t you” (Night on Earth). Corky retorts, “Fuck yes. I mean, yeah, it’s a cool job” (Night on Earth). Victoria asks if that is all she wants to do in life, and Corky responds as if offended and betrayed, asking if there is something wrong with that. Victoria apologizes and she stares out the window, Corky realizes she means it and looks at Victoria as a daughter would to her mother, “I didn’t always want to be a cab driver” “What do you really want to be” “A mechanic” (Night on Earth). Corky explains that she is already quite knowledgeable in the field and that her two older brothers are mechanics. Victoria takes the conversation into a new subject, “What about marriage and a family” “Definitely want a family… but you know like that stuff, that’s all beside the point. The real problem is to find a good guy for the father” Victoria scoffs, “Tell me about it” (Night on Earth). Starting a family, or even agreeing to live with a person is one of life’s biggest decisions. With that comes a seabed’s worth of pressure, deciding if starting a family is the right thing for you at all as well as deciding whether now is the right time. There’s also some pressure in finding someone with the right job, “Hell I don’t care what he does, just as long as he loves me right, with his soul. You know, takes me for who I am” (Night on Earth). Corky has a semblance of confidence, one can argue youthful arrogance. Victoria is an intelligent woman, yet somewhat insecure. Victoria surprises Corky by offering her an audition in the Hollywood film she is working on, “... I’ve been observing you. I honestly think you have something special… This is a terrific part. You could be a movie star.” (Night on Earth). Corky declines because of her taxi driving job, she expresses that she wouldn’t want to mess things up there. Victoria doubles down and makes sure Corky understands what she is offering. Corky says she is not interested and wants to focus on being a mechanic, “I see you’re being serious, but that’s not a real life for me… It's just that I have everything planned out for me. I mean, everything’s going just right for me now” (Night on Earth). Victoria is incredibly shocked by Corky’s answer, although she respects it. I think Corky is a great example of following your heart no matter what. She turned down potentially millions of dollars, as well as fame, because she understands what she wants out of life. Corky understands who she is and who she wants to be. The Hollywood offer can symbolize chasing someone else’s dream or it can symbolize someone deciding your dream for you. I believe this story is important because with the rise of social media and influencers, the idea of success has become more singular. It feels like success is imagined as a glamorous endeavor, bringing images of riches and a high society lifestyle to mind. While fame seems enticing, Corky’s story and the real life stories of many middle class Americans prove that working hard at something you enjoy for someone that you love (even if that person is yourself) is the epitome of success.

While people often define success and failure in of fiscal or family achievements, the Helsinki portion of Night on Earth invites a deeper philosophical reflection on what it means to succeed or fail as a human being. It is a snowy and routine night for Mika, the driver of car 101. Dispatch is offering a fare for three people, Mika accepts with reluctant pride. The three men Mika arrives to pick up are all drunk, the three leaning on each other like a pyramid to sleep and stand at the same time. When the three men enter the vehicle, one of the men, Aki, is blacked out. Mika inquires into this but the two friends exclaim that he will be fine. The men believe they are out of cash until the man sitting up front re Aki’s severance pay. The two men that are still awake are somewhat belligerent and aggressive, making fun of Mika and his name in an abrasive manner. Mika brings up the severance pay to change the subject and to make sure they have a way to pay the fare. Aki’s friend explains “He’s all fucked up, and losing his job is just a small part of it” “What do you mean” “Today was the worst fuckin’ day of his entire life, that’s what I fuckin’ mean” (Night on Earth). Mika extends his sympathies but Aki’s friend won’t accept it, explaining that Mika has no idea how Aki feels. This moment reflects how frustration and pain often lead to misplaced anger, especially among working-class individuals who feel powerless. As the drive continues in the indigo Helsinki night, the conversation nearly becomes a debate. Mika breaks the silence “Can I ask something… Your friend. What happened to him that was so terrible? Besides losing his job I mean” (Night on Earth). Aki’s two friends look at each other annoyed yet filled with excitement to tell this story. They explain that Aki not only lost his job, but his newly paid off car as well, though this is just the beginning of Aki’s bad day. He finds his wife and 16-year-old daughter crying about a problem, Aki’s wife reveals to him that his daughter is pregnant. Once Aki tells his wife about losing his job and his car, she screams at him about a divorce, telling him he is no good as a father or a husband. After Aki’s story is told by his two drunk friends, there is more driving and more silence. Mika again says something to end the silence, “Things could have been worse” (Night on Earth). One friend is shocked, the other nearly disgusted, they disagree before turning it back on Mika, “Whatever happened to you that was worse than that” , Mika responds, “Do you want me to tell you?” They both say “Yeah” (Night on Earth). He first asks them if they have any children, one has a son and the other a daughter. Mika begins to unveil his life story, “My wife and I both work hard. She has a job, and I have two jobs. We’ve been saving money because we want to have a family” (Night on Earth). This is fairly common in middle to lower class families, having to work and save up money before starting a family, although some are let’s say surprised by early arrivals. Mika explains further, “For a year we’ve worked at having a baby. Anyway, after a while my wife became pregnant. Then in the sixth month she started feeling strange” (Night on Earth). It is also fairly common for couples to make multiple attempts before successfully becoming pregnant. Becoming pregnant can come with a ton of pressure and stress as well, it can definitely make someone feel like a failure if their partner (or they themselves) can’t get pregnant after the first few attempts. Mika drives his wife to the hospital after her strange feeling during her sixth month of pregnancy, “Finally the doctor came and told me that Eija had a baby… and the baby, a little girl, was alive. I was so happy I was about to explode” Mika continues, “He told me the baby was way too early… She was in an incubator. And then he said there was almost no chance the baby would live” (Night on Earth). The rollercoaster of emotions, from the failed attempts to getting pregnant, to this fateful day. There is no telling what Mika and his wife Eija are feeling until you have been in a similar situation. As Mika begins to recount the story further, his stoic and fierce facade begin to dwindle. Mika continues after being asked for a conclusion by one of Aki’s friends, “The next day I brought my wife home… and the baby stayed there in the incubator. You should have seen her though, so tiny and perfect. But the doctor didn’t give much hope, he said she wouldn’t last more than a week” (Night on Earth). While Mika reminisces on what happened to his wife and daughter, he is rigid and almost frightened, but when he talks about his daughter herself, he lights up as if she is still waiting for him at home. He tells the men in his car that his wife was scared and close to losing her sanity. He says he made a decision, “I decided that I wouldn’t love this tiny little child. If she was going to die, I would have to stay strong and distant. I couldn’t stand the pain of losing this child, so I decided to kill my love. A week went by, and the baby lived. Then another week went by, and part of a third” (Night on Earth). By this time Mika, and Aki’s two friends are lighting up cigarettes while Mika recounts this horrid tale from his life, Aki himself is still blacked out. Mika finishes his story with courage, “After three entire weeks the child was still alive, but the doctor was still very negative. I sat up all night in the kitchen while my poor wife lay awake in the bedroom… Then Eija came to me and said I’d made a mistake. I realized she was right, if that baby was going to make it, it needed all my love… I felt my love for that baby surge through every pore of my worthless body. At the hospital the doctor was right there to meet us… And then he told us that a short time earlier, just before sunrise the baby had died” (Night on Earth). The amount of pressure a parent feels to protect and provide for a child is one of the strongest we will ever feel as a human being. Mika’s story is objectively saddening and heart-breaking. Fortunately, the likelihood of death in premature births has gone down but there are still many diseases and birth defects that we as a species are fighting. I feel this story connects to the state of health care and I am sure many families can watch Mika's story and feel moved. He lost his daughter, but here he is driving a cab in the middle of the night still working hard to provide for himself and his wife. When Mika compares his trauma with Aki’s it can come across as a bit judgemental, sort of like fighting over who has it worse. I think that goes back to the point of the middle and lower class pointing the finger at each other. Though I also believe Mika brought up his story because while Aki lost his job and car, those things can be replaced. Aki’s friends are engulfed by gratitude once Mika finishes his tale and drops them off. Aki wakes up groggily, pays Mika and crawls out of the cab. Mika drives away and Aki burps while sitting outside as his neighbors walk by and greet him, and so begins another day.

Night on Earth tells many different stories about working class people from all over the world. I believe this film to be important when discussing the themes of loneliness and community because it captures not only numerous personalities but cultures as well. It can show someone that no matter how lonely one can feel, there is at least one other person in the world who feels the same way. This film can serve as a reminder that success is not measured by how much fame or fortune that you have, but by the ability to stay true to who we are, to find connection to others, and to keep moving forward even on our worst days.

Alias or not Christian Wolff is a crazy name

On one hand it's an average action film, on the other its a drama about autism and ing. I think it tends to lean towards Batman-ish qualities in of the characters and how they develop. All in all, I found The ant to be an enjoyable action comfort movie. Hopefully the 2nd installment brings a more intriguing story.

Not Wes Anderson's best work technically but still one of my favorites. The story is concise yet extremely vibrant. Cinematography was brilliant, and the color scheme was beautifully done. The body of work in The Darjeeing Limited is flawed, but the soul of this film says something worth watching. Brody, Wilson, and Schwartzman carry this story with performances to be proud of.

A great movie to turn your brain off to. Emily Blunt was serving up looks the whole time, plus watching her be a badass is always a good time. Watching Tom Cruise just lose his mind was fun

The editing and writing aren't very strong at times, but that still doesn't get in the way of an entertaining sci-fi action popcorn movie

The needle drop at the end is just so nostalgiac to me

THE SON OF A BITCH IS GUILTY

Al Pacino went on one of the best runs I've ever seen in the 1970s. This film balances comedy and drama so well in my opinion. I think a lot of the problems characters are going through in this film still persist today. Probably my favorite film about lawyers as well.

Had to sit and think about this film for a few hours before I rated it. I think it captures human nature in such a calming and realistically melancholy way. Though that isn't to say that this film doesn't have its fair share of genuinely comedic moments. This anthological juggernaut written and directed by Jim Jarmusch is a must watch.

The perfomances in each of the segments are ingenious. This might be my favorite work of Giancarlo Esposito, him Rosie Perez, and Armin Mueller-Stahl had me laughing my ass off. Winona Ryder is so sincerely beautiful in this as well. Matti Pellonpää's perfomance moved me to tears.
