the first time i watched this was almost two years ago. at first i kept saying to myself why is the character design so corny?? i felt like hideki wanted to make a character that fits the crazy traumatic girl stereotype but after the first part ed i ed why this movie has stayed in my faves for years. being able to connect with the characters i watch turns films into something more than just a cinematic experience n it becomes a personal journey. i totally forgot that one of the characters i related to the most was in ritual lol. with time, everything starts to make sense and then i stopped blaming myself
the rituals created within the cycle of time serve as an escape strategy for the woman, while the man experiences creative blockage and both go through different kinds of existential crises. their reasons for holding on to each other are different, as are the ways they fetishize each others existence. man is kept alive by the idea of impermanence while the woman finds comfort in the thought of being eternal
the absence of a name for the female character is a significant detail showing that she is created as an object of desire for the man. as the woman develops a deep emotional attachment to the man and increasingly expresses her intense feelings, she descends into neurosis. therefore the man becomes overwhelmed and suffocated by this emotional intensity. his gradual withdrawal only worsens her psychological unraveling
“man’s desire is the desire of the Other”
neither of them ever achieves complete satisfaction within their relationship. but lets that the breaking point comes after the man experiences the feelings he initially desired but eventually finds overwhelming. meanwhile as the woman becomes more emotionally aware she transitions from being merely an object of desire to asserting herself as a subject. people cannot remain a permanent object of desire its always just part of a lacanian cycle
situations can change and people’s thoughts and realities can be reshaped or shattered in a single day. love is an illusion built on lack. true love is accepting and staying. and no, tomorrow is not my birthday

uzun zamandır karakterleri bu denli rahatlıkla psikanalitik baglamda incelenebilen bir film izlememistim bu yuzden erika karakteri fazlasıyla etkiledi beni. bunun tabii ki de haneke'nin karakter tasarımı ve genel anlamda sinema diliyle alakası var. daha ilk sahneden erika ve annesinin diyalogları aralarındaki iliskinin patolojik dogasını acıga cıkarıyor. evli bir ciftmiscesine birbirlerine hesap vermeleri, ortak banka cüzdanlarının olusu lacancı ayrısma evresindeki tıkanıklıgı direkt olarak gözler önüne seriyor. erika'nın annesinden kopamayısı sonucu babasının yerini alması da tabii ki cinsellige olan yaklasımını etkilemis. gelisim asamasında yasadıgı fiksasyon da erikanın cinselligini genitalden uzaklaştırmıs hatta büyük ihtimalle direkt genital safhaya geçememis. cinsel hazzi, gözetleme ve gözetlenme unsurlarına direkt olarak baglı. erikanın vajinasını kesmesinin de kaynagının genital safhaya gecememis olması ve vajinasını kabul etmediginden yeni bir genital yaratmak istediğini düsünüyorum. cinsel anlamda ve kendi bedeniyle de yasanamayan özdeslesme beraberinde haz sonucu olusan suçlulugu getiriyor bu direkt olarak bir ceza mekanizmasi!! İlk yetiskin birlikteliginden sonra da erika’nın ritüelistik sekilde kendine zarar verme eyleminin cok net bicimde daha da saldırganlıstıgını goruyoruz. film inanilmazdi içimiz bunaldıkca ve her seyin gittikce karamsarlasmasına ragmen sahnelerin sadeligi ve simetrikligi inanılmaz rahatsız ediciydi. Cok iyi bir sinema tebrik ederiz haneke ^_^ kitabi da okicam btw
