This is my first watch of The Pianist and I can’t help but think that many things are oddly superficial, relative to other highly acclaimed films about this part of history. The Substance

Too goofy to be impactful for the most part. Strong, well-considered efforts in practical effects and cinematography are diffused by corny production design, cartoonish characterisations, and insistent sequences of violence, especially in the final act [OoOoOoh - très extrême!]. The biggest disappointment about The Substance, in all its heavy handedness, is that this is going to become the contemporary frame of reference for the whole New Extremity genre in the eyes of general audiences world over.

This was really, really worth a second viewing. ittedly, TÁR felt quite dense for me the first time around (when I first watched it two days ago, lol), alternating from domain knowledge concepts to hypermodern social commentary; this seemed somewhat clunky, albeit very stylishly put together.
