Everything you could ask for in a movie-going experience. Sweeping landscapes (especially the Arrakis dusk), brilliant performances, and a score that's so enormous that your vibrating body feels like it's a part of it. Everything about this lived up to the hype, and it's one of the rare films where I was kind of upset leaving the theater because I didn't want it to end. Seeing this in IMAX was easily one of my favorite theater experiences ever.
There are so many amazing scenes that it's hard to choose favorites. I loved the juxtaposition in the opening of the Harkonnens silently floating up the cliff against them crashing down just minutes later. The most memorable scene to me was the gladiator battle on Giedi Prime. The coloring was haunting, and the little black gremlin guys were dope. Watching Austin Butler not drool, but SLOBBER out of his blackened mouth as he slaughtered his opponents was the highlight of the film for me. Paul's riding the sandworm was right up there too. The jarring alternation between blasts of dust into crystal clear scenery was beautiful, and the moment where he stands up sent shivers down my spine.
The roles in Part Two become so much more dramatic than in Part One, and I was afraid that some of the actors wouldn't be able to carry the weight. They did. Chalamet fucking showed up for the religious gathering scene. Rebecca Ferguson struck the perfect balance between cunning and imposing in Jessica. Zendaya's Chani was much more independent than in the book, but she gave the character so much depth that I wasn't bothered. And Butler's psychotic Feyd-Rautha will haunt my dreams for weeks. Lots of memes floating around about Bardem's Stilgar, but he absolutely captured the religious fanaticism needed for the story.
If Villeneuve can keep this up for Messiah, this will be right up there with Lord of the Rings for me.
