good and disturbing… but pretentious and self-indulgent at the same time - Lars Von Trier’s better works looks at conditions from a melancholy analytical perspective. I intentionally set out to watch his depression trilogy a couple years ago, and i found them incredibly interesting. As this movie continued, the less “good” it became in my opinion. The ending is lowkey fun in a way i appreciate, but again so self-indulgent and way too on the nose when it comes to self inserts. 

imo, comparable to Aster’s Beau is Afraid. Interesting journey, less interesting destination (outside of the visual effects). 

however, at this point, ive seen so many of Trier’s movies and while the shock still hits, his core tropes and themes have become tired to me. And though i was initially excited to see the clips from “Nymphomaniac Vol. 1” and the woods from “Antichrists”, it felt cheap and unrewarding when concerning his intention behind their places in this movie. 

kinda just mid, but if you wanna really freak out some queasy friends, its a great pick.

start to end such a thrilling and evocative film. Radiates ion and joy for the act of creating.  Yes to every decision made from script to costumes to actors. Easy easy shoo in for a generation defining film. Withholding that half star for when i see it again in 70mm.

absolutely stunning and eerily surreal. the perfect blend of cinema and theater that makes this adaptation feel like its a list episode from “the twilight zone”. Denzel absolutely transformed the role of Macbeth and gave me so many chills. additionally, this version made me care about ross LOL

My favorite film adaptation of Macbeth I have seen by far, but, I am a HUGE shakespeare nerd so imma be much harsher with its critiques. Didnt love s performance, but I loved what they did with the “out damned spot” scene

Of course this movie is super gimmicky, more gimmicky than any other Waters movie i have ever seen, but it was literally meant to be. I kinda live that for the first large budget movie he got, he decided to do a smell-ivision film. Wish they would show this at art theaters with the sniffing card. 

but sorry, the broom ass slapping bus theft scene had me dying, and the protest woman slapping the daughter in the abortion clinic saying “Thats from jesus” is just too damn ridiculous not to love.

Oz was my place of escape as a child. I gripped my tiny fists on to anything coated in emerald or glistened with a ruby shine. I read the entire Oz series cover to cover, listened to my CD of The Wiz constantly, wore Dorothy’s slippers out to dinners, and declared my favorite color was emerald green since I was three years old. I desperately wished I could take a hot air balloon ride off to the emerald city and escape the life I had in a religious confined community. 

My mom would put on the Wizard of Oz before I had glasses, and I would press my face into the tv screen as soon as everything went technicolor. 

As a queer child, nothing means more to me than Oz. 

But when I saw Wicked on stage for the first time, something had changed with in me… (pun fully intended)

Elphaba was everything I was and everything I still aspire to be. She was a nerd with glasses and braided hair with uncontrollable ions that gave her magical abilities. As a young clearly neurodivergent person, the vilification of her powers resonated with me in a way that I was not able to understand at the time. Her story is so dark… and I will not get into spoilers for the sake of the people who have not seen the musical in full… but the darkest was something I resonated with as well. It was beautiful to me to see that reality so transparent in front of me, while still capturing a sense of whimsy that I deeply longed for. 

Anyways, all this to say, the way that the director and the actors of this film treated this story fills me with a sense of joy that I have not felt since i was a child. I am absolutely amazed at the care and ion that radiated with every frame. this was so insanely beautiful. And i am EXTREMELY happy to know that one of my favorite stories of all time, with such beautiful characters, nuanced relationship dynamics, and relevant political commentary, is accessible for any person of any age to view now 💚

Also, additional points for the movie because Marissa Bode, who I am a lucky enough to have gotten to know over the past year, did such a phenomenal job playing Nessarose. The character was long overdue to have a disabled actress play the role and her involvement in the film has only elevated the story and the overall THEME OF THE SHOW!!! I cannot give her enough flowers for her performance. She is absolutely phenomenal. 

If I could give this movie 6 stars, i would. I cant wait to see it again next week, and i apologize to all of my friends… this has unlocked deep lore from my past and i am going to be unbearable for likely the next two years…

Im reading so many comments about how this movie cant work as a comedy and a horror while getting its overall point across, and i entirely disagree. Elizabeth as a character has so many touching empathetic moments where you can resonate with her as a character and sympathize with her struggle regarding aging. 

However, at the same time, Elizabeth as a character reminds me of the protagonist in Ottessa Moshfegh’s “My Year of Rest and Relaxation”. Though she is definitely having a rough day at the start of this film, she is an insanely rich woman who lives in a gorgeous likely multimillion dollar apartment in LA and who is OBJECTIVELY soooo stunning! She is beautiful! and she decides SO QUICKLY to put her life at risk for the chance to be “more beautiful”. Vanity is a trap. It is an abusive infliction that we happily indulge without question, which is inherently ridiculous and horrifying. 

I think if we stepped away from seeing Elizabeth as a conventional protagonist and saw her as what she is… a deeply insecure woman… we can understand both the horror and the comedy and how they balance each other out to say a giant FUCK YOU to beauty standards.
