Phenomenal, Dune 2 is a cinematic masterpiece and my favourite 2024 release.

Denis Villeneuve expertly crafts the second half of the first novel onto the big screen. It's a bigger and more awe inducing experience, from the sandstorms, the large set piece battle scenes and the hilarity of the relationship between Paul and Stilgar. One of the most brilliant sci-fi films we will witness in our lifetime, it's a shame that Oscar-level buzz around this film is mixed, it should win awards yet colleague's of the industry feel indifferent.

The general plot follows Paul Atreides as he unites with the Fremen people of the desert planet Arrakis to wage war against House Harkonnen. There's new lore and backstory introduced and obvious points to be explored in sequels, not to forget the expanded cast is terrific and their performances are high quality. There are some subtle changes along the way and I really enjoyed that they portrayed Jessica's unborn daughter as a grown adult. Adding seeds for the future but also drawing interest with such a big name actress.

Dune 2 was everything I could have wanted to showcase the second half of the novel. It's a must watch film that leaves a memorable impression. I wonder if Villeneuve can hit lightning in a bottle for Messiah, but even so he's definitely the right man for the job, together with the cast and team that he has put together. I'd never say no to more Hans Zimmer score and it's fantastic that he will be back too.
