Dune: Part Two

2024

★★★★

He's not the Messiah, he's a very naughty boy.

What starts as a breathtaking and beautiful love story, quickly descends into chaos and tragedy as Paul is powerless to resist the so-called prophecy. Who knows how Dune: Messiah will pan out, but if it can get this cast firing, and the creatives flourishing again like they do in this film (the cinematography, costumes, and production design are all terrific) then it will held up there with the great adaptions of the modern era.

And like the other big adaption at the start of the 20th century (though very different source materials), I'm sure I will flip-flop on the creative decisions made in this for years and viewings to come.

Bardem was hilarious, with scenes straight from a Monty Python skit. Chalamet was encapsulating as Paul (though I still rate Maclachlan highly), plus it was nice to see how deeply the Fremen were explored and Chani's involvement too as the moral com of the film. Rebecca Ferguson is somehow more terrifying than Austin Butler, and Lea Seydoux's little cameo was awesome.

I'm expecting nominations in 12 months.

(Please Denis, awkwardly CGI ATJ's face onto a baby or toddler like in Twilight).
