Robo Balboa’s review published on Letterboxd:
In those days, Arrakis was known by a Fremen name... Dune.
One of my biggest takeaways was that I surprised that Josh Brolin could bring me to tears while murdering someone, and my other takeaway was I probably should’ve read the book. I had three fucking years!
I suspect this movie is going to percolate in the ol grey matter for a bit. Something so drastically beautiful, tragic, terrifying, and totemic deserves my consideration in the idle hours.
WB deciding to release a year’s worth of movies day-and-date in theaters and on streaming was one of my favorite decisions a corporation has made in a while.
I’m sure it was a terrible decision for them financially, but because of that I was able to just rewatch Dune a whole bunch at home after seeing it in theaters, and that really allowed me to be able to fully invest and flow with the film.
I won’t be able to replicate that experience with Part 2, and I know, woe is me, but I am desperately looking forward to its streaming / physical release so I can experience the six-hour Dune-athon in one go.
I will say though, regarding how I should’ve read the book: pretty surprised when they started talking about nukes. Eight millennia into the future and we’re still fucking around with nuclear missiles? We’re still doing that? Ok, hope that doesn’t backfire.
