This really works for me in ways that Amziah King did not, but I can totally see how a directorial debut with this much style gets Andrew Patterson to take such a big swing in his sophomore outing.

Love how shots are either locked on stilts for 10 minutes, or whirl-and-twirl through a whole town. Love how conversations are either urgent and matter-of-fact or rambling over each other like a screwball comedy. When your leads are a switchboard operator and radio DJ, the importance of listening and storytelling make even the side conversations about the future years of 1990 and 2000 interesting.

Showing up to Friendship alone. Dudes outside the theater are quoting ITYSL to each other. Oh no, am I in the movie? Is this a bit?

A24 are coward pigs for putting Conner O’Malley in 3 movies but never letting him fully do his thing.

Hooptober 11 — 26/31

A perfect night at the movies, ed by my bb, The TFC, Kim Henkel, Teri McMinn, Wayne Bell and the Cinemonster himself. How often do you get to check off a Hooptober film with the creator of the challenge?

On this watch, what I noticed moreso than my previous 5-6ish watches is how unafraid Hooper/Carroll/Richardson were to hold a scene. The horror grows the more the audience wants to look away but are forced to stay in the scene. Screaming non-stop and Wayne Bell’s minimal score really rocked in the Bullock’s Texas Spirit Theatre with sound in the seats.

You know what I like about Linklater flicks?

I get older, they stay the same age.
