Pretty good at transplanting Thompson's world of creeps and suckers to then contemporary - the mediocre French pop music blaring out of every radio in this film is a cool detail, upping the gaudiness. But ultimately I couldn't get with its affected, histrionic . A failed experiment, but its ambitions are noble.

Pretty exciting noir - don't think I've seen this particular variation on cat & mouse before - and with the likes of Montand, Perrier and above all Signoret in the cast, you know you're in safe hands.

Excelente ideia a de usar diferentes tipos de animação, um meio afinal de contas bastante marginalizado em Portugal (como na maioria dos países). Adorei a quantidade de lore que este filme traz ao Aleixoverso.

Kids playing in the snow, construction work, super fucking cool slavic youths at a Prog-Jazz concert. Buildings, boats. You know, life.

I first became aware of writer/director Scott Hilman when we were both posting in the Flop House facebook group, and it makes a lot of sense that something as fond of tangents and 80's comedy clichés as this would emerge from that. But Bikini Hackers is more than just influences: much like Hilman's posts in that group, it frequently feels like it was beamed in from a different planet, in a good way. There are periodic moments of self awareness, reminders that the creators are not oblivious to its absurdity, but the stream of consciousness dialogues remain weird in a way that renders the film consistently fascinating, and elevates it far above any conscious so-bad-it's-good winking.

Moments in this could as bigoted (some jokes around misgendering, a surprise gay couple revelation), but there is an open heartedness here that swats away any charges of being reactionary: the gender jokes are not screeds against non binary identities but rather a delightful Bugs Bunny number directed at a corporate stooge Elmer Fudd; the gay couple are allowed to be as beautiful and absurd as everyone else.

More than enough style and creativity to rise above the rabble of 60's Star Trek rip offs (while still retaining some of that genre's sleepy charm). That Bava guy, has anyone ever mentioned he's good with colours? Loved the ending.

Would make for a good double feature with Killer Constable.

Holy shit they put effort into commercials back in the day. Clear influence on Samurai Jack.

Cinderella gets her prince not through being a goody two shoes but by displaying irreverence, courage and hunting skills. I'm not saying this makes it perfect feminism or anything (there's a particular instance of bodyshaming), but it's the kind of thing films today still pat themselves on the back for. In usual Eastern Bloc form the film rates the peasants over the court, though the dividing line here is generational as much as anything, with both poor Cinderella and the wealthy prince trying to escape stuffy parents.

Points for the copious snow and the crazy schlager ballad coming out of nowhere.

The gothic opening is a tad misleading for a documentary that ends up being as much about the current circumstances of the town it is set in as it is about its official subject matter, an old Dominican convent that seems to have been an oasis of progressive thought within fascist Portugal. Nevertheless both aspects are interesting, and this is well worth watching.

Inspirational.

This probably benefitted from low expectations on my end, but I was very pleasantly surprised to see that not only does Such Good Friends work well as an entertainment, it also does not feel like an old man trying to depict youngsters he doesn't understand. The weak side of it - there are quite a lot of small plot elements that go nowhere - is probably down to the same thing that makes it ring true: the script ed through many hands, but on the other hand some of those hands include Joan Didion and Elaine May.

No surprise to hear this was a troubled production - it feels diffuse and unfinished. There's stuff to enjoy: the blue tinted cinematography, a decent fight towards the end, Sean Lau playing another in his long line of world weary inspectors. But it remains a mess, with the comic's super soldier origins and a Beauty & The Beast style romance after Li kidnaps Karen Mock failing to coalesce into anything much. The climax has the score playing way below the sound design, it sounds like someone trying to listen to music without waking their parents next door - it's a detail but it points to the film's incomplete vibe.

I do like that Jet Li uses a gruff Batman voice when donning the Black Mask.

Minimalistic and austere, obsessed with process first and foremost and with male friendship to a lesser degree, this is my kind of film. The 130 minutes just fly by!

The trouble with Truffaut is that he will forever be known as a member of the nouvelle vague, but switched over to more conventional works very early on, and so will always look a bit stodgy when compared to Godard or Rivette. This is a shame, because while his films are conventional, they are also often very good.

Vivement Dimanche is a bubbly romantic comedy with hardboiled noir trappings, clearly the work of someone forever in love with classic Hollywood. The mystery aspect turns out underwhelming, and it remains puzzling why our girl would fall for Trintignant's middle aged grump, but hey, c'est l'amour, eh? Really it is Ardant's time to shine, and the confident energy she brings to the character makes the film.

A cliched yakuza tale is told twice, first "straight", then in an absurdist, comedic fashion - though the video aesthetics and deliberately half arsed delivery of the first part are its own wry joke too. Really happy to see a Kitano production hit the West once again, pity it's on prime.

In which two ex cons set themselves the noble task of distributing pornography through the only means the repressive society of the time allowed for - by disguising it as a health and fitness magazine. Sadly though good intentioned they are not very smart, enlisting squeaky clean athletes Buster Crabbes (whose bland awkwardness works well for the character) and Ida Lupino (far too good for this, but she was at the start of her career), not even as celebrity spokespeople but as EDITORS. This predictably does not go well and the squares split off to run a creepy fitness camp featuring the winners of an international beauty contest, "international" of course meaning "white anglos only".

It is truly heartbreaking to see what people had to go through just to access some porn back in the day, and obviously this would have been even worse for queer audiences, so it is heart warming to watch the last 20 minutes or so of this film collapse into several sequences of half naked studs playfully manhandling some rogues attending the event under false pretences. There's also a shot of an actual naked dude (from behind) and THE END gets stamped on Crabbe's (clothed) posterior.

Badly paced, terrible editing and a profoundly stupid plot - everyone here knew they weren't making high art. But it's too bizarre to dislike, and the precode patter is smart and smutty. Kind of a must see!

Yes that Pret product placement may seem pretty crass, but consider: if you're making a movie about life in London circa 2025, would it make sense for there NOT to be a scene in a Pret A Manger?

There is a profound neediness behind the macho bluster of Volonte's inspector; his lover has it right when she likens him to a child. The pompous speeches really just temper tantrums, the power move of grabbing people's faces really just a frantic attempt to draw attention. And the camera is in on this too, all those tight angles.

Just a lovable crowd pleaser from the golden age of Hong Kong cinema: a football movie where the lesson is not to trust your team, where matches are mostly an excuse for betting and where if you lose a friendly game you might get your leg hacked off. Did I mention this is a lighthearted comedy?

Has more to say in its seven minutes than most current films do at two hours plus.

I dunno guys, this just felt too vintage sitcom for me. Also I try my best not to look at gender relations from old movies with 2025 lenses but Edouard throwing a hissy fit about his wife's dress and then slapping her...hard to root for him to get the girl after that. Lovely closing shot tho.

Very strong melodrama. It's not entirely devoid of corn but does have some good grit to it owing to the working class Nu Yawk setting, which is portrayed in a surprisingly poetic light. The storm scenes are also very lyrical, with the flooded church an inspired bit of surrealism.

Watched the Korean cut, which was sold to me as "almost a different film". This is true, but it's an inferior one: wanting to save his stepfather makes the constable more sympathetic but also less interesting than the straight fanatic of the HK version, and the happy ending is unforgivable. That aside, a lot of pandering to the Korean market, culminating in the Empress Dowager wishing prosperity on both nations - amusing, but hardly essential.

A director prepares his play as his relationship breaks down. Both rehearsals and toxic relationships have repetition built into them, which somewhat explains the running time - personally I was more engrossed by the creation than the destruction.

Greatly enjoyed the obligatory "hero has to retreat to train for final battle" being literalized as dude literally going into a cocoon.

Difficult to give a confident rating for what is the set-up for an TV show but I thought the mix of vintage animation (including soundtrack!) and the new style made this a lot of fun. Like they got to play with the old toys without succumbing to nostalgia entirely.

Compromised by the army setting, and even more uninterested in psychological verisimilitude than your average romantic comedy of the time, but it's enjoyable fluff, aside from the dance sequences, which are entirely amazing. Astaire called Rita Hayworth his greatest dancing partner and, with all respect to the great Ginger Rogers, I might agree - she's spectacular in this.

O TCM que se apanhava na TV Cabo em Portugal não se comparava à programação cuidada e ecléctica do seu equivalente americano - os filmes repetiam tantas vezes que se tornava running gag, e a selecção (Anglo-Americana, com um foco nos anos 60 e 70) apresentava poucos sinais de curadoria. Não obstante, era mesmo assim uma fonte interessante de educação cinematográfica. Esta lista é obviamente parcial, baseada inteiramente na minha memória (aceito sugestões!). 1. Arabian Nights: Volume 2, The Desolate One

   Criticism is autobiography, and there's no way that the best movie about the financial crisis wouldn't also be my movie of the decade.

2. Blindspotting

   A thoughtful film about gentrification, racism and police brutality that is also a hilarious buddy comedy and a nail biting thriller; films like this don't come around too often.

3. It's the Earth Not the Moon

   The peak of slow cinema, the best evocation of the beauty and the cheese that comes with living in an ultra rural region.

4. Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives

   There's a ghost haunting South East Asia.

5. First Reformed

   The best film about the great flavour of the 2010's: despair.

6. Nightcrawler

   No punches pulled.

7. Moonrise Kingdom

   Probably will go down as Wes Anderson's greatest film, and the best refutation of those who think he lacks heart.

8. The Big Sick

   Yadda yadda cinema is a visual medium blah blah, there will always be a place for good stories well told with a great cast.

9. Mad Max: Fury Road

   Still the best adrenaline rush of the decade, and far less pandering than much of the pseudo-righteous actioners that followed in its wake.

10. Certain Women

    Social realist American storytelling lives!

In the long Italian tradition of grabbing American cinema trends and making them their own, the poliziotteschi genre featured cops, crooks and car chases inspired by US films like "Dirty Harry" and "The French Connection". At a time of great social upheaval, these films, sometimes leftist, sometimes right-wing, serve as a good barometer of the country's political mindset, while also delivering on action, charisma, funky soundtracks and gorgeous set design.

• Caliber 9

  Di Leo's masterpiece is a hard-boiled crime story that can be ranked with Hollywood's finest, periodically interrupted by two cops discussing Marx in a touch that feels positively Godardian. Watch out for the gorgeous set design and an opening scene that marries visuals and music in a way that's worthy of Leone.

• Street Law

  Castellari's right-wing vigilante fantasy is politically indefensible, but the director's infectious enthusiasm and a wonderfully balls-out performance by Franco Nero make the film a campy delight. Roaringly entertaining, and not as dumb as it looks.

• The Italian Connection

  Mario Adorf's performance in "Caliber 9" is one of the film's highlights and so Di Leo gave the actor this showcase for his Tuco-like energy, comic chops and pure desperation. Less politically astute than "Caliber 9", but it has some amazing set pieces and fun performances by Woody Strode and Henry Silva as the henchmen called in to top off Adorf's loose cannon.

• Violent City

  Shot on location in New Orleans, this fits in nicely with Bronson's 70's American run. Amazing car chase opening.

• Confessions of a Police Captain

  Very talky leftist drama by the director of "A Bullet For The General". Franco Nero sports a badass robe.

• Revolver

  Full of pain and paranoia, this movie probably gives the best idea of the flavour of the times. Oliver Reed unleashed.

• The Big Racket

  Not for the faint of heart (did there really need to be TWO gang-rape scenes?), but if you're in the mood for something brutal and sleazy Castellari has you covered. As always, Enzo's visual style elevates his material.

• Emergency Squad

  A surprisingly low-key little noir gem.

• Tony Arzenta

  You cab't really go wrong with Alain Delon as a world-weary existentialist hitman doing One Last Job. A lot of beautiful 70's European location shots.
