Last night I had a dream where I was going to some kind of service like a funeral or church service or something at a chapel I’d never been to and a bunch of my friends were there and I saw one of my middle school theatre directors there and talked with her and she was noticeably older and way nicer to me. I think she was in the dream cuz I’d always listen to this on the way to rehearsals when I was in her shows and I watched the first half last night and finished it this afternoon. The action was good, was on par with the others and the Tangier chase and fight were pretty sick. The Tangier sequence was also really similar to the opening sequence in the Bourne Experience, the live stunt show at Universal which was kinda funny (I know more ab Jason Bourne than I ever thought I would thanks to my wonderful friends)

The old guy antagonist was a wet blanket compared to Brian Cox and the guy from the first movie but the Colonel Sanders antagonist made up for it

Thom Yorke + PTA uhh heck yes. Guys this is what the dance concerts trained us all for. I was thoroughly confused for the first two songs (I should rewatch and read the lyrics) and I thought Dawn Chorus was beautiful. I think the theme of sleepiness definitely resonates as well, watching this at 12:30am as well as being a man who enjoys his naps I rlly resonated with Yorke and the dancers’ sleepiness

While playing movie 20 questions on the way to Dallas, Aaron made the ungodly choice to use this as his movie and it altered our evening forever when he found this on DVD at his grandparents’ house.

The bastard child of George Lucas and Ron Howard, the two created an unholy combination of LOTR and Star Wars that has cross-dressing and almost naked Val Kilmer (which does sound awesome on paper but they somehow made it BORING) and so much, too much goofy action and hobbit discrimination and general discrimination and we must destroy the baby at Mordor or else This movie was BORING AF and so long it was agonizing id rather be takin a shid

Eva went to bed and Dillon fell asleep and Aaron and I were the only ones strong enough to stay awake so who are the real cinephiles here 🤓

Fun to see Al Pacino be so young and skiddish. A man bearing the weight of the world. Definitely worth the watch, I was worried I’d just be watching a bank heist movie but 😍🥰🤩 love you Sidney Lumet, Dillon was there too and he didn’t appreciate it enough only giving it a 9 where’s the life in you Dillon

I finally watched it fully with the subtitles and:

There’s something special to me about the sacrificial lamb characters. Maybe it’s my Christianity talking but I do enjoy this character type. That said, I think it’s rlly hard to do these kinda of characters well because making them perfect or infinitely and unrealistically strong and self-giving is hoaky and annoying while making them doormats that get taken advantage is depressing and doesn’t make for a respectable character. I read Dostoevsky’s The Idiot earlier this year and the protagonist of that book is an example of one that misses the mark for me; (*spoilers for The Idiot to those who care*) he’s unrealistically self giving, always has the perfect words, and also sacrifices himself to the point of insanity, making him both too perfect and also not respectable (good book tho!) Hirayama, on the other hand, rides the line of giving himself to the point it’s kind of painful to watch but not without his moments of weakness or to the point of his own demise. He actually does it in a way that makes his life more fulfilling and that is infinitely inspiring.

This movie also reminds me how unbelievably privileged I am. I’m watching 2 hours of a laborer from my cozy ass house in a golf course neighborhood on summer break from my arts degree at an affluent university and I don’t even have a job. Hirayama has the backbone to be pleased with the deck he’s been dealt and to play it. He doesn’t complain and he builds others up around him without even saying anything, by doing all of the small things well. 

Hirayama is one of the bravest characters I’ve seen I think. The confidence and bravery it takes to take on the cyclical, monotonous days and also the sudden painful changes while also appreciating the smallest moments of beauty around him so fully is just awe inspiring to me. The fact that I find this man a believable character makes him a figure I want to imitate. The weight he clearly holds from his past combined with the uncertainty of his repetitious future is embodied through his slow, deep breathes. The moments of meditation he takes in his blank, humble bedroom. His morning routine and personal projects. His ability to live alone. So many things I wish I had the bravery to embody.

The isolation this man represents is crazy, too: he lives alone, every character leaves or hurts him in some way, and he clearly feels the sting of it all but savors the beautiful moments along with painful. That’s another thing I really respect about this character, he doesn’t skip experience. He has made choices and continues to make choices that help or hurt himself and while it’s so tempting to retreat back to the safety of a bedroom or into your own mind he instead builds others up and fights against giving up. I think about the scene with him and Mama’s ex-husband: the way he clearly hurts, the way the ex-husband clearly hurts, and Hirayama turns it into a special experience the two men share instead of a quarrel or sad moment. Hirayama doesn’t run away from experience whether it will heal or hurt him and that’s something else that inspires me. He sees life and wants to live, which isn’t something that’s easy at all, especially with so much escapism available at all times. I’m victim of that big time. It’s inspiring to see a humble, simple man so ready to live.

After watching Paris, Texas, if there’s anything Wim Wenders knows how to do it’s light a shot, the lighting is friggin gorgeous.

Anyway I know that’s a lot but after watching this 1 and 3/5 times I can say that I think this movie is profound. folk art. It’s truly special when a slice-of-life movie that’s so simple in concept can affect me so much.

Caspar has an interesting sentence in this movie about how once a double-cross happens it doesn’t end; it’s definitely hard to forgive and build trust with people, especially when you’re an Italian gangster whose life and fortune is constantly on the line. Maybe the ethics we miss are the friends we made along the way. But yeah breaking the bro code I understand the cold turkey on that. Maybe hopefully one day they can all laugh about it and go enjoy a cigarette together at an Irish lounge if they’re not all full of Tommy-gun and revolver bullets.

The idea of love always approaching its death like an expiration date is terrifying to me but this movie makes it seem not so scary. One expiration doesn’t mean your expiration, tho, it’s actually a chance for something new. I don’t know if I necessarily agree with Mr. Wong Kar-wai if he’s trying to say that love always inevitably fails, fades, or ends in pain and that you have to take it in stride, but if we’re looking at it like LOTS of love ends that way and that it’s more worth it to take it in stride and acknowledge that and move on then heck ya. Rlly sweet movie, loved the colors and the urban, wet, dirty, but homey Chinese setting. Hard for me to believe this was made before In The Mood For Love, besides the music this feels like it should be later 90s/early 2000s where the other seems like it should be like the 60s but is actually 2000. Johnny liked it too so how could you not

It’s sad that one of the most basic yet profoundly human joys of life, family, is something so unobtainable, perverse, and corrupted by centuries of oppression. The way the idea of family is played with between Remmick’s group vs. Smoke, Stack, Sammy’s is tragic: SSS’s family is unobtainable while Remmick’s is a lie. Smoke has to die to reach his family and it’s a beautiful redemption, that salvation is possible for a man oppressed. It’s just sad to think he had to die in the first place to reach it first, but it should be sad if the world is a place that casts off and kills.

That’s just like one of the bajillion themes covered in this movie and a relatively small one relative to the others but this time that one struck me.

I tried to watch this but I couldn’t get through it, I even tried breaking it up and watching it in segments but I’d either get distracted or start falling asleep but that’s more of a commentary on my own ability to focus than anything.

From what I did watch, this movie to me is like a fully realized experience of white noise. The lack of dialogue and grueling slow pacing left me reflecting so much during each meticulously crafted shot. I thought about so many things as I watched a man sit, watched another man sit, watched the first man make his dinner, watched the other get acupuncture. It’s like how pop songs are intentionally kinda vague so you can apply your own circumstances to them- that’s how I felt about the parts of the movie I did see. I thought about loneliness and why people either decide to stay in their loneliness or how unfortunate it is people can’t find others to connect with because of some circumstance. I thought about my own tendency to try to escape social situations I think are risky or dangerous. I also thought about how lucky I am to be in school and how I don’t have to live like these two guys because of my own circumstances and amazing friends I have. I think I made it only about 40 or 50 minutes in but this was definitely a very meditative experience that I hadn’t expected I’d get when I rented this.

Gabe was blasting Circle of Life in the living room so I just had to him. Watching this made me want to watch the stage musical again it’s so friggin good when I’m 28 I’ll be one of the hyenas and when I’m 43 I’ll be Zazu in the never-ending LK tour

I was getting a lot of Darren Aronofsky if he had directed A Different (wo)Man for awhile and then it shifted and now I understand why it’s billed as a horror movie. Ik this movie is pretty polarizing but I liked it, it made me guffaw and chortle and flabbergast. Female rage comp material all over this

Almost shares the name of my favorite Green Day song which is pretty cool. Third and final Orlando movie, seen with Dillon, Gabi, and Jess. My biggest thought with this movie is that I thought they could’ve been a llloootttt more brutal with its violence. The action scenes were still entertaining but I just didn’t really feel anything for a lot of it (like Jack Quaid wwoaahhh). If the guy really can’t feel anything then let’s turn that violence knob up to 11!! I thought the set up was cool tho, you can find themes about vulnerability and overcoming past wounds that I really enjoy. Jack Quaid is great even tho his writing is trying so hard to convince us he’s nerdy but I already believed but you aren’t going to go to see Novocaine for its writing. Watching this and feeling my cinematic bloodlust made me want to rewatch Walking Dead tho, plus I’ve been sporting my “eenie meenie miny moe” all around Orlando so basically I need to rewatch seasons 1 and 2 of Walking Dead!!

Didn’t intend on watching another Bong Joon-Ho immediately after Mickey-17 but Dillon, Corbin, Aaron, Landon, Eva and I decided we must for the second movie of my Orlando excursion of 2025. Dark dramedy mystery, dissonant (in an interesting way) in its frequent violence infused with humor and/or drama.

What I learned from this movie is that violence is the answer and always go with your gut, never trust others and when it comes down to it, always physically assault your enemies!

Imperialism, nationalism, political extremism w/ Mark Ruffalo Trump featuring dentures. First movie of Orlando spring break, w/ Dillon and DeFeo. For the first 40 minutes I thought it’d be a movie about identity crisis and it kind of is a little but it really becomes what it is after the first 1/3 of the movie.

Henry Johnny and I watched this as part of Henry’s philosophy of film class. I started watching it with them like 40 minutes in and watched for about an hour so I missed a big chunk of the beginning and I have rehearsal so I missed the end. The middle is absolutely beautiful tho; this is the kind of man I want to be; finding, actively digging for the beauty in the harsh, crass, boring, é things of life amidst isolation. We also watched this without subtitles so I had no clue what was happening except by the action but I still think I had a solid understanding of most things, if anything it made it more fun to decipher and maybe more effective since I was in a sense making the story myself. Heartbreaking yet spiritually edifying. Idk what’s up with his past cuz I don’t get to finish it yet but I just know it’s something painful! I’ll definitely watch this in full at some point.

Ok I finished it with them; it’s amazing. Need to rewatch it in full. The most powerful people are the ones that bear the weight of every day life bravely and appreciatively.

Watched again cuz Kate and I are performing Therapy in MT Acting.

This time I did get distracted by a lot of the interesting editing choices; a lot of cuts made the scenes feel stilted and some Jon M. Chu-y lighting. But that doesn’t stop the source material (the music) from being so friggin good. Andrew Garfield is an acting warrior, inspiring. Heeelllooo to my walk in clooooseeettttt

Something that’s been a through line through a lot of the movies and TV shows I’ve enjoyed and even through my experience with Christianity and in prayer recently is the appreciation of life, particularly appreciation of the painful things. The analysis of this dying marriage is filled with immensely painful things, but I think what makes these painful things so debilitating for these characters and what ends up actually ruining their lives is the rejection of experience and inability to learn from their mistakes. There’s a Freudian idea that’s permeated through some of my favorite pieces of media and favorite characters and that’s the idea of the destrudo, antithesis of libido, our psychological attraction to our own downfalls and deaths, self-destructiveness. Movies like this that contrast the libido of one of the most powerful human experiences, the beginning stages of falling in love, and contrasting that to the dying marriage that drives these characters to destrudo is heart-rending. And it’s the loss of energy that prevents them from accepting the experiences and learning; the characters don’t muster the will to keep fighting for libido, so the pains of living are numbed through destrudo. Instead, they embrace the destruction gradually, letting it change their moods and personalities to the point that they are more apt to disregard each other than love. These characters think they can escape the pain when in fact they’re forfeiting the libido, the psychological force that drove these characters to make the happiest, most memorable and significant moments of their lives. I find in myself that I love to lean into my own destrudo. I embrace the hedgehog’s dilemma too strongly and am too afraid to be pricked anymore than I have been, so sometimes I resort to things like avoidance or even just apathy and lethargy and therefore forfeit any opportunity for happiness and instead accept being numb. But I know now from movies like this, other pieces of art, my friends, and my faith that that’s my own psychological death before my literal one. When someone is coasting in their destrudo, it’s so hard to get them out, but it’s possible! Ryan Gosling’s character in the beginning of the movie is someone who hasn’t forfeited their libido. He pulls Michelle Williams’ character out of it. I think about the scene where Gosling plays the ukulele for her and she dances for him. Both work for each other and inspire each other’s libido. Maybe we can grab our friends and shake them out of their destructiveness, and in doing so save ourselves from our own.

Anyway, about this movie specifically: it’s beautiful, if you liked We Live in Time this is that but I like it even more. And old Ryan Gosling in this looks like Jason Lee I literally thought it was Jason Lee at first

2 hours of being gently offered the opportunity to wake up, drop your defenses, and live. Dense and beautiful. Enlightening writing performed by two geniuses. Sad to think that I’ll probably go back to the trance state in like 10 minutes because of how much easier and habitual it is. Also nice that they focus multiple stories through the lens of theatre, makes my brain tingle when they talk about Brecht or the Public Theatre or Stanislavsky or putting on The Bacchae at Yale. One of the most powerful movies I’ve seen. It’s better to have lived consciously, even if that means in agony, than have coasted and waisted it all. That’s a gross oversimplification of what this movie has to say.

Scott Pilgrim, a modern male archetype:
1. Is a hoe
2. Lacking in confidence
3. Abandons one woman who cares for him in pursuit of another novel, mysterious, idyllic, and, most importantly, seemingly unobtainable woman
4. Embarks on a quest of heroic magnitude full of danger and emotional pain to claim this unobtainable woman
5. Does it all under the guise of pop culture references

I think if I saw the idealized version of myself stealing my idealized life I’d also be that guy who brings the mood down at parties. What we may assume to be our idealized selves (outwardly and conventionally attractive, talented, good job) isn’t: the guy who accepts himself with honesty and has the bravery to wear those gaudy ascots is the one actually living. A theme that’s been done plenty of times but executed uniquely enough to avoid feeling hackneyed. Interesting watch. Felt very A24 with its meta commentary and sudden bursts of violence, reminded me of Dream Scenario. Sebastian Stan and Adam Pearson, mwah.

I’d have done the same in that big drum audition too, Ayame. 😮‍💨 The dual nature of both growth and performance, how they can feel anywhere between emotional torture and blissful nirvana. This is applicable really for everyone but especially you artists and it’s a really quick watch, 23 minutes long and it’s free on YouTube through NYTimes. Part of me wishes I could be reincarnated as a child in Japan and go through the Japanese school system because all of the totally real and not fictionalized Japanese media I consume make it look so fun! I saw that little Pichu stamp on the letter asking Ayame to practice… 😏 And hot DAM that school lunch looks GOOD they have SUSHI and FRUIT!! 🤤

Was slightly worried about where they were taking the Porco/Fio arc but ig it’s sweet? Fio ends sexism and single handedly makes every man her servant. Jina deserved so much better tho 🥺😿 If I was a pirate I’d definitely be this kind of pirate. Even those who’ve been deeply scarred by their pasts can still be seen to their cores, as humans. They can still inspire and be inspired even through their battles with their pasts and reclaim empathy, ion, and purpose.

Generally not counting Disney films unless I think they’re particularly relevant to the theatrical world. Also counting pro-shots.
It’s also hard to decide how I rank because it could be by how much I enjoy the overall experience of each film/recording or by how great they are specifically as musicals or by how much I’d want to rewatch them right now so I just played it by ear and did a little bit of all of those. And what even constitutes a musical? Are pieces with only diegetic music still musicals? Is Whiplash a musical, a movie with no singing but plenty of musical storytelling by multiple characters?
