Friendship crashes into your life like a raccoon in the kitchen at 3 a.m. — loud, uninvited, and somehow offended you’re not more excited to see it.

It's like if The Cable Guy had a midlife crisis, got lonelier, and became more uncomfortable to watch. Welcome to Friendship, a painfully funny descent into social desperation starring Tim Robinson at his most unhinged.

This dark comedy isn’t for everyone. If you don’t like awkward silences, secondhand embarrassment, or watching a grown man spiral because Paul Rudd won’t text him back, maybe sit this one out. But if cringe is your love language, welcome home.

Tim Robinson plays Craig, a suburban dad whose marriage is on the verge of divorce and all he wants is to watch the new Marvel with his wife and kid, who clearly prefer each other’s company.

Craig is just sort of… there. Lonely, ignored, and one stray compliment away from imprinting like a baby duck.

Enter Paul Rudd: local weatherman, new neighbor, effortlessly cool and in full Paul Rudd charming mode. When he gives Craig even a flicker of attention, Craig latches on — hard. What begins as the start of a nice new friendship turns into a one-sided friendship fatal attraction obsession, which is both hilarious and hard to watch. Craig... Has issues.

It gets a bit repetitive once the desperate pattern sets in, but the steady stream of weird, sharp jokes keeps it from wearing out its welcome.

The beauty of Friendship is how deeply it leans into discomfort. Craig overshares, oversteps, and catastrophically misreads every room he enters. It’s painful. It’s funny. You’re laughing, but also kind of hiding behind your fingers in discomfort.

Director Andrew DeYoung keeps the tone sharp but grounded. Even when Craig’s fantasies go off the rails, yes, there are swords, and Subway sandwich fantasies, but all rooted in that basic human need: to be liked.

He’s stuck in a quiet house with a wife who’s halfway gone and a son who barely looks his way. Craig is filled with hope, frustration, and a strong need to feel close to someone again. It’s sad but always combined with dark, awkward comedy.

In the end: Friendship is a cringe comedy that turns middle-aged loneliness into a black comedy opera — where every missed text feels like heartbreak and every casual hangout is a lifeline.

It won’t be for everyone, but for those who get it, it hits deep and it hits hard. It worked for me.

Stop the presses, cancel the apocalypse, and someone check on Mickey because Disney actually made a good live action remake. Gasp!

Please Click Here for Full YouTube Review with my Dog

No, really... Lilo & Stitch live action is the rare case where Disney doesn’t just yank your nostalgia piggy bank off the shelf and shake it upside down. This one has heart, and dare I say... soul?

Directed by Dean Fleischer Camp, who did the wonderful Marcel the Shell, this retelling doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel, it just makes sure the wheel has feelings. The alien-chaos-meets-grieving-family core is still here, but now it’s grounded in a way that hits harder than you’d expect from a story that also includes laser guns and a four armed dog thing. Instead of just copy-pasting animated scenes with real people and CGI fluff, Camp dares to focus on the heart of the characters. Imagine that, a Disney live-action remake with actual soul.

Maia Kealoha "kay-uh-LOH-ha" shines as Lilo, bringing just the right mix of sass, sweetness, and sadness. Her chemistry with Sydney (AH-goo-dong) Agudong, who gives Nani real emotional weight and is the film’s beating heart. Their sisterly bond grounds all the alien mayhem and gives the chaos a soul. And yes, Chris Sanders is back as the voice of Stitch—still sounding like a gremlin on an espresso bender and is perfect!

There are changes, but unlike some remakes that rewrite everything just because they can, these updates mostly feel like thoughtful enhancements with more emotional payoff. Stitch’s fear of water? Actually explored. Lilo’s loneliness? Even more poignant. Some of the wackiness gets cranked up a notch, and doesn’t always land, but kids will be too busy giggling to care.

In the end, Lilo & Stitch stands out because it re what most Disney remakes forget: people don’t just want a prettier CGI version of the same thing, they want to feel something. And this one? It makes you laugh, maybe cry, and walk out thinking, “Ohana really does mean family." Finally, a Disney remake where I didn’t leave the theater wondering why I paid to rewatch a lesser version of my childhood.

Is adopting a genetically engineered space dog covered under homeowners insurance?

At this point, the only mission more impossible than Ethan Hunt’s might be convincing Tom Cruise to stop running! But honestly, I’m not sure any of us want him to stop.

Please Click Here for Full YouTube Review with my Dog

Let’s get one thing straight: if you didn’t like The Final Reckoning, congratulations—you’ve been brainwashed by the Entity. You know, the movie’s all powerful AI villain that wants to control everything, including your opinions. It thrives on division, doubt, and people arguing over whether this movie had “too much exposition.”

Mission: Impossible – Final Reckoning once again finds Tom Cruise sprinting through chaos like his life (and the box office) depends on it. The film doesn’t care if it’s bloated or even half an hour late to its own action party—it just wants to punch you in the face with spectacle and sprint away before you can catch your breath.

The first act? Yeah, it’s like attending a spy themed TED Talk. Too many people talking, too much backstory, and the kind of exposition that feels like it needs a syllabus. In fact I believe there’s enough exposition to qualify for college credit in Espionage Studies.

But then BAM, the film re it’s a Mission Impossible movie and suddenly it’s one of the wildest rides Cruise has ever dragged us on.

There's an underwater sequence that’ll have your lungs aching and a plane stunt that seems to violate every safety regulation in history. The plane sequence might be one of the greatest action scenes ever filmed—made even more breathtaking by the fact that it’s not CGI, but Cruise himself performing the stunts. The danger feels real because it is.

These scenes are intense and unforgettable, showcasing the pinnacle of action filmmaking. This is action movie church. And prove that even at his age, Tom Cruise isn’t slowing down anytime soon and really is the last true Movie Star!

If the AI villain were truly intelligent, it would have scattered LEGOs on the floor Home Alone-style—mission over!

Once the action kicks in, all that early exposition starts to feel less like a flaw and more like a carefully laid fuse, one that makes the eventual explosion hit that much harder.

For me, Fallout was the series at its peak and Final Reckoning is the victory lap. The stakes are higher, the threats more modern with AI in the mix, and the endgame in sight. There’s a real sense of finality looming, especially as the action keeps topping itself.

The ing cast brings it, too. Hayley Atwell, Pom Klementieff, and the heart of the team: Simon Pegg and Ving Rhames. Their bond with Ethan gives the film its emotional core, and it’s a welcome counterweight to the action. There’s also a callback to a character from the first film that somehow doesn’t feel like a cheap nostalgia grab either.

Final Reckoning is about consequences. Ethan Hunt isn’t just outrunning explosions—he’s fleeing the weight of his past, the threat of an AI-fueled apocalypse, and the creeping question of whether it’s finally time to stop. Ultimately, it’s a story about people fighting to stay human in an increasingly digital world. That it’s told through insane airplane stunts and face-peeling masks only makes it more fun.

In the end, The Final Reckoning May not be the sleekest mission—but makes up for it with heart, spectacle, and sheer cinematic muscle. If this is Ethan Hunt’s last ride, he didn’t slow down. He went out doing what he does best: sprinting full speed into cinematic legend, daring the rest of Hollywood to keep up.

Move over Jaws, The Surfer proves the real menace at sea is an American man with unresolved issues. Nicholas Cage is back baby and this time, he's battling a bunch of surfer bros, his own ego, and maybe the entire concept of reality.

Click Here for Full YouTube Review with my Dog

In The Surfer, Cage plays an American who returns to his old surf spot in Australia, only to get kicked off the beach and emasculated in front of his son by a gang of sunburned bullies who treat the waves like an exclusive celebrity nightclub. Most people would just leave. Cage? He plants himself in the sand and slowly loses his mind, like a very sweaty, very determined barnacle.

What follows is less a surf movie, more a sun drenched psychological cage match. Cage match? You get it... because it also stars Nick Cage? Sigh...

Think Point Break meets Mother and Beau is Afraid with a really bad sunburn.

Director Lorcan Finnegan sets the tone with stunning visuals and a creeping sense of dread. Meanwhile, Cage turns in a tour de force of sweaty meltdowns and wild eyed speeches, muttering to himself as a kookaburra laughs at him in the background like a feathery Bond villain. It’s bizarre. It’s brilliant. And Cage? He unravels with such slow, mesmerizing weirdness, it might just be one of his best performances in a career of great performances, deep, unhinged, and gloriously uncomfortable.

Visually, this thing is next level. We’re talking wild close-ups, trippy dissolves, and the kind of slow zooms that make you feel like your brain’s melting. It’s like the camera is having a nervous breakdown right along with Cage and honestly, it works. The unease seeps in through every frame.

Underneath the madness, the film actually has something to say about masculinity, dignity, identity, and what happens when a man refuses to back down... from a beach. The ending was a little shaky for me, but even when it gets messy, you’re never bored. You’re too busy sweating through your shirt and wondering if Cage is going to surf or snap.

In the end, the Surfer might be the most stressful beach trip you'll ever take. Sure, it gets weird. Sure, it’s not for everyone. The Surfer is wild, uncomfortable, visually exciting, and anchored by an unhinged Nick Cage performance. … this cinematic wave is worth catching.

He came for the waves. He stayed for the psychological collapse.

Hurry Up Tomorrow is the kind of movie that makes you wonder if your popcorn was laced. I was blinded by the lights that's for sure.

Click for full YouTube Video review with my Dog

It’s moody, stylish, and loaded with pop star pain, like if Purple Rain and Black Swan had a sleep deprived baby and let it direct itself on cocaine at 3 a.m.

The Weeknd plays a fictionalized version of himself, a mega-famous artist who loses his voice mid-tour and slips into a slow, foggy unraveling, and feels like The Weeknd’s therapy session got lost and ended up on IMAX screen instead.

The film is loosely inspired by the real moment he canceled a concert just after it began. Here, this moment spirals into something darker and more cinematic.

He spends much of the film mumbling into phones, lying on floors, and soul searching while in designer clothes and honestly? The Weeknd proves he’s more than just a musical talent, he’s a surprisingly strong actor, delivering a performance that’s subtle, convincingly sad, and quietly compelling.

Jenna Ortega plays Anima, a mysterious fan who doesn’t just blur the line between iration and obsession, she burns it down. Ortega is also great in this film, wide-eyed one moment, terrifying the next.

Barry Keoghan makes himself right at home, playing a friend slash witness to The Weeknd's unraveling. He brings his usual charm, intense but grounded. It’s a quieter performance than usual, and a strong anchor for the film.

All three leads are solid and bring more to the table than the script probably gave them.

Visually, director Trey Edward Shults doesn’t hold back. The camera spins, floats, and flashes like it’s on a acid laced sugar high. It’s cool, sure but also a little dizzying. At times it feels less like a movie and more like a very expensive music video crossed with an immersive screensaver.

And here’s the thing: as a standalone movie, it doesn’t quite land. It feels more like a big, expensive music video than a film with a real story. The first half drifts by with gorgeous shots and moody performances, but not a lot actually happens. You keep waiting for something to kick in and thankfully, when Jenna Ortega goes full super fan, it finally does.

If you view this as a companion piece to the album, it’s pretty great. But judged purely as a movie in a theater, it’s more vibes than narrative. Dreamy, stylish, and sometimes hypnotic, but also kind of like being stuck in a two hour dream sequence with a killer soundtrack and no exit.

In the end, Hurry Up Tomorrow coasts on mood and aesthetics. Come for the killer performances stay for the hypnotic visuals and maybe bring some Dramamine.

At its core, it’s a long, stylish music video that works best as a companion to The Weeknd’s new album. Fans will find plenty to love, but as a standalone film, it falls short and comes across often as self indulgent. The plot is thin, the character arcs barely there, and for regular moviegoers, it might feel like an expensive dream sequence that never fully wakes up.

If The Weeknd ever invites you into his head again, maybe pack a flashlight... And a plot outline.

Some horror movies give you goosebumps. Bring Her Back gave me hand cramps from clutching my face and watching through the tiniest possible finger gaps.

It’s a squirm-in-your-seat, dread-in-your-stomach, hide-behind-your-hands experience—like a kid at a sleepover who's in way too deep. It doesn’t just aim to scare—it wants to unsettle you.

Horror movie reviews are funny – “wow every moment of watching this was excruciatingly unpleasant. What a great movie!”

This is pure A24 horror, proudly following in the footsteps of Hereditary, The Witch, and Midsommar. It's unnerving, elevated, and makes you question ever trusting a smiling woman with a taxidermy pet.

The Philippou brothers, fresh off Talk to Me, don’t tiptoe back into horror—they swan dive into the abyss, splash you in the face, and then hold your head under for good measure.

If fairy tales taught us anything, it's to never trust a nice lady in the woods. Especially if she hands you a VHS tape labeled “Cult Rituals 101." The story centers on siblings Andy and Piper after a family tragedy, and are sent to live with a new guardian that starts as an awkward adjustment and quickly turns into a slow descent into something way more twisted. There's also Ollie, the world's creepiest foster kid, who communicates by eating... well, basically anything that fits in his mouth. Shudder. Grief hangs heavy, and the kids soon realize they’re not in the Minecraft movie—though that might be another kind of horror.

Visually, the film is stunning—in that “I might never unsee this” kind of way. The camera doesn’t just follow the action—it lurks, stares too long, and traps you in gritty, intimate close-ups that feel claustrophobic and inescapable.

Sally Hawkins is absolutely magnetic—vulnerable, terrifying, and impossible to pin down. But she doesn’t carry the film alone. The entire cast is phenomenal, grounding the horror in something raw and painfully human.

The film’s real horror isn’t just in the gore... though, fair warning, it’s relentless and disgusting, but in how it uses horror to weaponize grief. The pain of loss can create horrors from within.

It’s a meditation on grief, trauma, abuse, guilt, and what happens when you poke at wounds that never healed. Classic horror tropes are sprinkled in like seasoning, but never distract. This isn’t horror for the sake of horror—there’s real emotional weight here.

It’s A24 horror doing what it does best: making you feel deeply uncomfortable—and deeply something. Just don’t go in expecting comfort. Or to ever look at dinner utensils the same way again.

In the end, Bring Her Back isn’t about cheap scares—it’s about watching love mutate into madness, driven by a performance so unhinged it leaves claw marks. It’s a beautifully brutal plunge into grief, delusion, and raw human desperation. The Philippous aren’t just proving themselves—they're planting their flag in the A24 horror pantheon. You won’t forget this one. Mostly because it won’t let you.

And they say kids are picky eaters—Ollie begs to differ. He’ll consume your cutlery and your soul!

Fight or Flight feels like what happens when Brad Pitt’s Bullet Train misses its connection and hops on a budget airline.

Check here for Full YouTube Review with my Dog

Yep instead of slick style and Brad Pitt, you're on a janky budget flight with Josh Hartnett punching people between drink carts and cramped coach seats. It’s dumb, bloody, ridiculous... and kind of a blast.

The plot? Eh, whatever. But basically, Hartnett plays a washed up agent flying coach with a plane full of assassins, all after the same target: a hacker with a mysterious identity. It's as original as reheated airplane lasagna, but it sets the stage for some gnarly in flight brawls.

Josh Hartnett is clearly having the time of his life, and honestly, so are we, at least for the first half. He delivers every absurd punchline and flying elbow like he’s Brad Pitt on a two day hangover, and somehow, it works. Hartnett carrys this movie on his back like it's oversized luggage.

Is the dialogue cringe? Often. Are the assassins undercooked and weird for the sake of weird? Definitely. Does the story nosedive harder than Spirit Airlines landing? Without question. But the fights? Chaotic fun. The gore? Gloriously excessive. And director James Madigan, in his directorial debut no less, somehow makes it all watchable on what looks like the budget of a Taco Bell commercial. The blood effects are hilariously fake at times, but the lower budget weirdly adds to a B movie like charm. It shouldn’t work... but somehow, it kind of does.

In the end, Fight or Flight peaks early, coasts on fumes, and crash lands straight into sequel bait. It's a bloody good time for action junkies, sure, but also frustrating in how close it comes to being better. The plot’s forgettable, the characters are paper thin, and for all its fun chaos, it never quite finds its own identity.

It came close to earning a green light, but it's riding Bullet Train’s coattails without bringing anything new to the trip. So I’m giving this one a yellow light of caution. The vibe's there and an enjoyable ride for the most part, but the originality never made it past TSA.

Josh Hartnett whacking someone with a folding tray? Still cinema. But next time, let’s aim for first class.

The MCU might actually be back. For real this time. I think. Probably. (Please don’t make me regret this, Kevin Feige. I've been hurt before).

Full YouTube Review with my Dog

Thunderbolts isn’t just a good Marvel movie, it’s a surprisingly deep and emotional one. Thunderbolts is for the weirdos. The broken ones. The folks who’ve stared into their own void and wondered if they’re still worth saving...or, like me, into an empty Taco Bell bag at 2AM.

I walked in expecting Marvel’s version of The Suicide Squad and got something way more raw, messy, and meaningful. This is a story about trauma, self-worth, and a bunch of damaged superpowered misfits trying to survive themselves and somehow, it doesn’t get buried by the usual Marvel formula.

What’s genuinely refreshing is that Marvel finally feels unchained. The movie has grit, not just in the visuals, but in the way these characters talk, feel, and fall apart. The characters swear. They hurt. They open up about the emptiness inside them. This doesn’t feel like a Disney-fied Marvel product. It’s darker, more mature, and actually lets the characters be people. Sad, angry, complicated people. Imagine that.

That said, it’s not all doom and gloom. The Marvel humor is still very much here. Smart, sharp, and funny as ever. But the fun doesn't undercut the emotional moments. When the film is heartfelt, it stays heartfelt. When it gets serious, it doesn’t always bail out with a punchline. Marvel feels surprisingly self aware here, leaning into what you'd expect from heroes and then flipping it, poking fun at itself in a way that actually works.

Florence Pugh delivers a powerful and layered performance as Yelena and is the absolute heart of the film. Her performance is funny, fierce, and straight up heartbreaking. She’s not just fighting enemies, she’s fighting depression, emptiness, and that awful “I’ll never be enough” voice in your head. Usually that's what LeeLoo whispers in my ear.

Lewis Pullman’s portrayal of Sentry (and his darker alter ego, The Void) is complex... offering one of the most tragic and sympathetic characters Marvel has ever put on screen.

Thunderbolts is a true ensemble piece, with David Harbour, Wyatt Russell, Sebastian Stan, and the rest of the team all getting moments to shine and add something to the film.

The team dynamic feels messy and real. They don't start as a team but grow into one. This isn't a polished superhero team up, this is a group of strangers brought together by their deep struggles and it feels great when they become a team. It’s like a group accidentally got superpowers and decided to hug it out.

Visually, it’s more grounded than your average MCU movie, less shiny lasers and CGI and more gritty close up fights. The action feels more physical, like people actually getting hurt. But the real stakes in the film are emotional.

Also? The post-credit scenes are back to being must see. So stay until the very last credit rolls!

In the end, Thunderbolts isn’t about the next big crossover. It’s about people trapped in their own heads, struggling to believe they matter. It’s about finding connection when you feel like a lost cause. And in that way, it might be one of the most emotionally honest things the MCU has ever done.

The Legend of Ochi is what happens when someone says, “What if E.T., Labyrinth, and Metallica raised a kid together in Eastern Europe?” Isaiah Saxon’s directorial debut is a wild swing in a modern movie landscape where studios are too busy rebooting cereal mascots into cinematic universes... Ochi dares to be... original. Gasp...

Click here for YouTube Review with my Dog

It’s a loving throwback to those delightfully weird and slightly magical '80s fantasy films where kids befriended strange creatures, learned deep life lessons, and somehow avoided lifelong puppet-related trauma. Think E.T., Gremlins, and The NeverEnding Story—though Ochi doesn’t quite reach those emotional peaks, it channels their spirit with impressive heart.

What sets it apart is that it doesn’t talk down to kids. This world is genuinely intense: there are scary moments, bloodied creatures, and yes—kids wielding actual guns. There’s no way a There’s no way a Disney exec would greenlight this today without breaking into a cold sweat. And yet, somehow, it got made. Sure, today’s kids might be a little scared or confused by the weirdness of this film, but hey, I grew up on this kind of stuff and I turned out fine… right? Questioning everything right now. It’s totally normal to be reviewing movies in a car while talking to your dog. Not a sign of deep seeded trauma of some sort... Hahaha, moving on.

In an era where these kinds of films barely exist, Ochi is a refreshing, wild shot of that weird, wonderful '80s energy we didn’t know we missed.

The story follows Yuri, a moody teen living in a strange village where mythical beasts called Ochi get blamed for everything from cow deaths to stubbed toes. When her dad Maxim leads a child army to hunt them, Yuri saves a baby Ochi and realizes maybe the “monsters” aren’t the bad guys.

Sure, the plot’s familiar, girl meets beast, beast changes girl, but Saxon’s worldbuilding and handcrafted puppetry make it feel like a lovingly preserved artifact from the ‘80s, smuggled out of a Jim Henson and Steven Spielberg fever dream. The Ochi puppets are so lifelike, expressive, and endearing, that they feel like they wondered in from a forgotten fantasy classic and bring an extra layer of heart to every scene they’re in. They are essentially a cross between a gremlin and baby Yoda with a tad more fur.

The cast is solid across the board, Helena Zengel shines as Yuri, Willem Dafoe in full Dafoe mode, and Emily Watson adds some welcome quickness Finn Wolfhard’s a bit underused, but still makes the most of his moments.

The film is not without some serious flaws however, as the story plays it a little too safe. You can see every plot beat coming from a mile away, and some choices, like Yuri speaking fluent "Ochi", really tested me even for a kids film. It was totally unnecessary for her to speak and understand the creatures and the scenes brought to mind the cringier corners of '80s cinema, like Mac and Me. These moments nearly derailed the entire film for me. Even the otherwise lovely score occasionally overdid it at times.

Still, for all its predictable turns and my personal annoyances aside, the film thrives as a throw back kids film that reminds us why these kinds of stories endure, even if it occasionally stumbles while chasing that magic.. Saxon’s debut is about creating a world you want to get lost in, complete with misty forests, ancient villages, and one very adorable fuzzy creature destined to become a childs new favorite movie buddy.

The Legend of Ochi is heartfelt, weird, beautiful, and clearly made by people who love storytelling more than profit margins. It’s the kind of film you show your kids or your inner child who still believes puppets are cooler than pixels

I went back and forth on this one, those cringey plot choices really annoyed me. But, I couldn't bring myself to slam the brakes on a kids' film that dares to take bold, retro swings. It embraces real danger, real puppets, and real weirdness in a way that’s all too rare today. So, I’m giving The Legend of Ochi a recommendation… even if it’s by the slimmest of margins.

Come for the fake vows, stay for the real emotions!

The Wedding Banquet is a heartfelt, funny, and emotionally rich update of Ang Lee’s 1993 classic. I had no idea this was a remake and of an Ang Lee film, no less. I’m seriously questioning my film nerd credentials right now. I guess I have to hand in my badge!

Directed by Andrew Ahn, this version follows two queer couples who agree to stage a marriage to help solve some practical and emotional problems. Things start out smooth enough until a traditional Korean grandmother flies in and demands the full wedding treatment. Cue chaos as the only thing scarier than faking a marriage? Faking it in front of a grandma who can smell lies like a bloodhound.

The pacing of the film can feel uneven, especially in the first act, but once Grandma shows up, the story really starts to click. From there, the film find its rhythm and gets funnier, messier, and more emotionally grounded.

At its heart, it’s about love, identity, family expectations, and the people we choose to call home. Yes, some romantic moments are a little uneven, and the script leans on a few familiar rom-com tropes—but the cast more than makes up for it.

Youn Yuh-jung steals every single scene and is hands-down the MVP. Joan Chen is a delight, while Kelly Marie Tran and Lily Gladstone shine with emotional moments that feel honest and earned. Bowen Yang adds his usual sharp humor while also revealing new layers of vulnerability that I haven't seen from him.

In the end, this remake is occasionally a messy experience, but sweet and sincere, and often very funny. A few moments might fall flat, but the emotional payoff and the chemistry between the cast elevate it. It's warm lovable dramedy about the complications and beauty of family.

Ryan Coogler’s Sinners is a bold, blood-soaked Southern horror film that blends horror, history, and blues into one of the most original—and stylishly unsettling—movies of the year.

Set in 1930s Mississippi, the story follows twin brothers "Smoke” and "Stack,” both played by Michael B. Jordan. (And really, when has a double dose of Michael B Jordan ever been a bad thing?) They return home after WWI with dreams of opening a nightclub. At first, it feels like a heartfelt drama about second chances—but things get dark real quick and the characters soon find themselves neck deep in vampires. And yes, that’s a vampire pun. You’re welcome.

As night falls, the town becomes a battlefield—not just against vampires, but against the deeper evils of racism and exploitation that have haunted Black culture for generations.

Coogler’s not just playing with horror—he’s using it to say something. These vampires don’t just want blood; they want rhythm, soul, and culture of the Black community. It’s a sharp metaphor for how Black talent has been drained and sold off—and yes, in this case, the metaphor bites back. The layers run deep, but if metaphors aren’t your thing, no worries—it still works as a badass, blood-soaked thrill ride. But me? I’m always here for a bite with deeper meaning.

Coogler builds the world slowly, letting the characters breathe before unleashing the madness. And it pays off—you genuinely care when things go sideways. And trust me, they go hella sideways. There’s a juke t, undead white supremacists, and enough blues to stir your soul.

The music, composed by Ludwig Göransson is phenomenal and mostly driven by breakout star Miles Canton, who is just fantastic in this film. It’s more than a soundtrack—it’s the film’s heartbeat, linking generations through sound, struggle, and spirit. Honestly, the score deserves its own Oscar campaign.

Michael B. Jordan absolutely devours this dual role. It’s so good, there were moments I forgot he wasn’t actually twins. His portrayal of Smoke and Stack is nothing short of masterful, with the two brothers having different energies. Jordan balances both roles with nuance and depth, often in the same scene. It’s one of his best performances to date.

Visually, Sinners is one of the most stunning films of the year. It's packed with biting (pun 100% intended) commentary on race, culture, and survival. It’s funny when it needs to be, terrifying when it wants to be, and emotionally grounded throughout. One minute you’re vibing to blues in a 1930s juke t, the next you’re in a full-blown vampire brawl but it works. Even as the blood flows, Sinners stays rooted in what counts: family, legacy, and the fight to defend your place in a world that’s always tried to take it.

Sure, the final act leans a little more into traditional classic horror action, but the emotional and cultural impact stays strong. It’s scary, moving, and effortlessly cool. And let’s be real—there’s no universe in which watching Michael B. Jordan dropkick a white supremist vampire isn’t satisfying.

Also, don’t even think about leaving before the end of the credits. Coogler’s got surprises waiting.

In the end, Coogler doesn’t reinvent the vampire myth—he reframes it through the lens of Black history and resilience. Sinners is unforgettable, easily one of Coogler’s best works, and hands-down my favorite film of the year so far.

If you’ve ever wished Blade had a blues soundtrack and a PhD in American history, Sinners is your movie.

I went in expecting a bit of a cheese fest, maybe the cinematic equivalent of a hot pocket—messy, predictable, and in the end, regrettable. But DROP surprised me. It’s a slick, unapologetically over-the-top thriller that grabs onto its bonkers premise and sprints with it yelling “Run or the babysitter dies!”

Click here for full YouTube Review with my dog

For me, it echoed ‘90s thrillers like Nick of Time or Red Eye—that also had tense, fast-paced setups where an ordinary person is thrown into danger by a mysterious stranger and has to think fast to survive. But here, the tension gets a modern twist, with smartphones and texting adding a fresh layer to the chaos.

Meghann Fahy is fantastic as a widowed single mom just trying to survive the world’s worst first date, while Brandon Sklenar- delivers effortless movie-star charisma. Their chemistry crackles on screen and gives the film a grounded emotional core that keeps the premise from going off the rails.

The setup is absurd, but it knows it, and honestly, that’s part of the charm. You’re not here for realism—you’re here for fun and thrills.

The film’s stylish direction and clever use of texting visuals elevate it beyond your standard thriller. The text messages don’t just pop up in Comic Sans on a blurry phone screen in this film, instead they are used in a creative way which immerses you in the drama even further. The camerawork and blocking is also surprisingly sharp.

While it’s an enjoyable ride, you’ll definitely need to look past a few head-scratching character choices to keep the fun going. The story does start to lose steam, even with its brief runtime, but it stays afloat thanks to its sharp focus and Meghann Fahy’s grounded, emotionally rich performance.

In the end, Is it groundbreaking? No. But is it a blast with just enough ridiculousness to keep you entertained? Absolutely. DROP is a solid pick for a date night—or for when you want to feel a bit stressed in a fun, fictional way. A few more twists or stronger red herrings could’ve pushed it further, but as is, it’s a solid crowd-pleaser. So "Drop" in to your favorite movie theater and enjoy this thriller... Get it... Sigh

Drew Hancock’s directorial debut is bold, twisted, and wildly entertaining—embracing dark comedy, camp, and bit of terror in thrown in as well. Companion is a genre-bending spectacle packed with surprises, making for a perfect way to kick off the year in sci-fi horror.

The film’s take on the dangers of technology feels eerily relevant, adding depth beneath all the bloody chaos. It’s like a lighter, but still unsettling, Ex Machina.

Companion also tackles toxic relationships with sharp wit and a biting edge, balancing horror and humor masterfully.

Sophie Thatcher owns every second she’s on screen, delivering a performance that solidifies her as a powerhouse. Between this and Heretic and Yellow jackets she is proving why she’s one of the most exciting talents in the industry. Jack Quaid is also very great in the film!

Even though the poster gives away the “twist,” the script is so clever that it doesn’t even matter.
This is the first great film of 2025—wickedly fun, insanely thrilling, and an absolute must-watch. I LOVED it!

“Warfare” is less a film and more an experience—and by experience, I mean a 93-minute anxiety attack.

Click Here for Full YouTube Review with my Dog

Directed by Alex Garland and Iraq War veteran Ray Mendoza, it plunges viewers into a raw, real-time reenactment of a 2006 Navy SEAL mission gone wrong.

If this movie had a subtitle, it might be “War: Still Not Great!”

Surprisingly, in this film there’s no main character, no score, and no story arc—just chaos, confusion, and walkie chatter. It’s built entirely from the memories of the men who were there, and that brutal authenticity defines every frame. If this movie was any more realistic, they’d be charging you for popcorn and combat training.

There’s also real no narrative arc or emotional manipulation here—just claustrophobic chaos, disorientation, and the fight for survival. It’s incredibly hard to watch, but that’s the point. You feel every echoing gunshot, every scream, every breathless moment. It’s like the world’s most stressful escape room, except there’s no escape and everyone has automatic weapons.

You’re not supposed to enjoy it; you’re supposed to feel it and live it. The sound design is incredible and the film Academy might as well start engraving the sound Oscar now. The editing also keeps the tension at a relentless high.

Garland and Mendoza avoid glorifying war. —they just drop you in and make you sit with it without preaching. The few glimpses of civilian life remind you of the collateral cost, though those stories remain tragically sidelined.

The performances are all very strong, with the entire cast fully committed to realism over showiness. This isn’t a film built for standout moments—it’s an ensemble effort that prioritizes authenticity, and every actor rises to the challenge. The cinematography is sharp and immersive and the behind-the-scenes epilogue with the real soldiers hits the authenticity of the film even harder.

In the end, “Warfare” doesn’t ask questions or offer answers—it just shows. And that’s what makes it stand out from other war films. Warfare isn’t a fun or traditionally enjoyable experience—nor is it meant to be. This is not a popcorn flick. It's a brutally realistic, stripped-down depiction of war that immerses you in the fear, confusion, and violence of a single day in Iraq.

You don’t watch this movie—you survive it. I absolutely recommend seeing it in theaters, not for entertainment, but to truly feel the weight of what it’s portraying. It’s a powerful tribute to those who served, told with respect and zero embellishment. For all of these reasons Warfare is worthy of a Green Light!

At this point movies like this should really come with a punch card—“Your 10th revenge mission is free!”

YouTube Review with my Dog

The Amateur wants to be a throwback to slick '90s spy thrillers, but instead lands somewhere between “solidly made” and “generic streaming filler.” It’s the kind of movie you forget you watched until the autoplay asks if you want to rewatch it.

Rami Malek gives it everything he’s got—his signature twitchy intensity, wide-eyed urgency, and that “I haven't slept in a week” look—and somehow makes it all work, even when the script doesn’t. Unfortunately, not even his commitment can inject energy into a story that feels like it was written by AI trained exclusively on Jason Bourne knockoffs.

The plot leans heavily on the old “dead wife equals revenge mission” formula, as if we haven’t seen it a thousand times before. Rachel Brosnahan’s character basically exists just to die and launch the plot, which is as emotionally moving as a jeopardy rerun.

The film is competently directed by James Hawes— but feels like it's missing that spark, like a meal that's been perfectly cooked but still ends up just... bland. It also occasionally drags, especially when the trailer has already spoiled all the best moments. The advertising companies got to stop doing this to trailers!

The premise had potential—a nerd taking out bad guys in clever ways—but most of the kills lack the ingenuity I hoped for. A bit more Walter White-style cleverness could've made the action far more interesting than just relying on bombs.

The ing cast is full with talent and some good performances, but they’re mostly just left with very little to do and simply collecting paychecks here.

In the end, The Amateur is... fine. It's watchable, sure, but despite its competent direction and occasional style, it never quite grabs you. It struggles to distinguish itself, feeling more like a watered-down echo of better films in the genre. At its core, it’s just Rami Malek running, grimacing, and occasionally hacking into things. It’s not a disaster, just deeply okay—with a side of déjà vu.

"We accept the reality of the world which we are presented. It's as simple as that."

This is a film that was way ahead of its time and predicted the future of entertainment. Even a quarter-century later, the film's themes still resonate deeply in our age of live streams and social media, where everyone feels like they're starring in their own reality show.

Jim Carrey is absolutely perfect in this role, he was the biggest star in the world at the time and could really relate to living life under the microscope of society.

It serves as a stark reminder to question the status quo and challenge our understanding of the world—an imperative more relevant today than ever. The phrase "How's it going to end?" prompts viewers to ponder whether they're shaping their own destiny or relinquishing control to others, prompting introspection about our chosen paths.

The film's final moments remain one of my favorite endings in a film , depicting courage in facing the unknown and embracing risks beyond the confines of a manufactured existence.

A Quiet Place: Pizza to Die For

A quiet place day one is the third outing in the franchise, created by actor and director John Krazinski. It was apparent that the first two films were John Krasinski's babies, as he stated it was the most he ever put into a project and was a love letter to his daughters. When it was announced that he would no longer be directing this franchise, fears that the third film was purely a Hollywood franchise money grab came to mind.

Click Here for YouTube Review with my dog

I was relieved to hear in Krasinski's place, that director Michael Sarnoski was taking over. Coming from the indie film *Pig*, which was made on a small budget of $3 million, his transition to a $70 million summer blockbuster seemed like an interesting move. Bringing on someone like Sarnoski was possibly the best decision they made. In *Pig*, he prioritized human connections before turning the film into a culinary John Wick, and he does the same in this film. Here, characters shine brighter than special effects and Hollywood spectacle. It achieves a solid balance between the more serious, emotional moments and the intense, in-your-face thrill ride scenes.

The result is a film that is uncompromising and offers a protagonist audiences wouldn't normally expect from a summer blockbuster, a terminally ill hospice patient. There might be aliens, but this is a film that is about confronting certain death when battling a terminal disease. When all is dark and bleak, how does one spend their last days? If survival isn't your motivation, then what is? Obviously it becomes a quest for a slice of pizza in NYC,becoming a poignant adventure—because, let's face it, pizza is always worth the risk, even when battling aliens!

Set before the main events of the first two films, Day One stars Lupita Nyong'o and Joseph Quinn, both delivering fantastic performances. Despite being an unlikely pair, their chemistry drives the entire film. Their ability to convey deep emotions with just their eyes is crucial in a movie where silence is key.

A special shoutout goes to Frodo the cat, who delivers some of the best feline acting ever seen in a motion picture. Frodo’s performance is so compelling that it deserves to be paired with the dog from Anatomy of a Fall. Together, they could elevate the genre of cat and dog films to new heights—move over, Lassie and Garfield! It's shocking what they get this cat to do in the film. I can barely get my cat, Gatsby, to come for treats!

Like the original films, Day One is incredibly thrilling and intense, but the the setting in New York adds an extra layer of excitement. The city's vibrant and chaotic atmosphere significantly raises the stakes, making it more dangerous with its large population and countless potential noise makers.

The film includes familiar franchise plot devices, giving us tense moments where even the smallest sound can mean danger. Unlike Frodo, my cat would start meowing for food within minutes of an invasion, pretty much guaranteeing we wouldn't survive, hope it's worth it Gatsby.

Despite the tension and excitement, Day One continues to emphasize the small emotional interactions between characters, with the aliens serving mainly as a backdrop to the human story. The film is not without its faults, with some dumb character decisions and action sequences that dragged. But minor complaints for a film like this, that does most things right.

In the end, The latest *A Quiet Place* installment is a nail-biting, emotional survival story set at the start of the alien apocalypse. *Day One* excels at further developing this terrifying world and building incredible tension, like it's predecessors but balances its scares with a touching human story about loss, grief, and hope while delivering on its promise of heart pounding dread. It's compelling to see characters search to live and not just survive.

I was so immersed that I found myself holding my breathe and eating my popcorn extra quietly. If I had to rank them, I'd put Quiet Place 1 at the top, followed by this film, and then Quiet place 2.

The story picks up with Riley entering her teen years and navigating the stresses and social mishaps of DA DA DA PUBERTY!! The film delves into the roots of awkwardness, sense of self, the power of our beliefs. The core group is ed by intriguing new emotions, with anxiety taking center stage, although all of them are fun to explore.

The portrayal of Anxiety, in particular really takes Inside Out 2 to a new level for me. Bringing to life the overwhelming and paralyzing nature of this emotion in such a creative and sincere way. I was feeling anxiety myself watching unchecked anxiety run rampant on screen.

While it shares thematic DNA with the first film by emphasizing the importance of all emotions, it continues to feel relatable and expands the metaphors and concepts in powerful ways. It felt like a story worth telling and not just a phoned in sequel.

It continues the clever expansion of Riley's mind. New areas and constructs, like repressed emotions and sarcasm, mirror her growing complexity. This imaginative setting provides a deeper exploration of her psyche, showing how her emotions turn to beliefs and create a complex web of what makes us, us!

The visuals are pretty much what you can expect from Pixar, which are quite beautiful but I was surprised for some more unconventional Pixar animation with memorable characters like pouchy and dreamy videogame character.

Inside Out 2 is an exquisitely crafted and deeply emotional film. I'm not going to lie, I might've shed quite a few tears during this movie. This sequel brilliantly addresses the relatable challenges of growing up with remarkable maturity. I was consistently amazed by its creativity and beautiful animation. The timeless Pixar magic is there from start to finish, making it a truly captivating experience.

A Kingdom with enough jaw dropping visuals and good storytelling that'll make you go bananas (and other ape puns)

Click here for fun YouTube review with my dog

This movie had a lot to live up to for me, as the Caesar trilogy that came before it was so consistently well done and one of my favorites. I feared "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes" would be a shallow, cash-grabbing installment, lacking the heart and visual prowess of Matt Reeves' trilogy. A trilogy which I felt had a proper conclusion, so why milk the franchise any more?

I'm thrilled to say that this film beautifully honors Caesar's legacy. Despite initial concerns about Matt Reeves not returning as director, Wes Ball directed this film phenomenally, drawing on his success with the "Maze Runner" trilogy.

Leeloo, when dogs become super intelligent and take over the earth you'll treat me kindly right? I gave you treats... that!

Set in a future where apes reign supreme and humans lurk in the shadows, this franchise continues to evolve in interesting ways after fifty years of these films. "Kingdom" feels both refreshing and nostalgic, offering fun Easter eggs that nod to the original Charlton Heston film. The film is skillfully crafted by a director who takes time to establish characters and setting, rather than rushing into action sequences.

While some may fault its slower pacing, I found it contributed to my emotional investment, where I came to love and care about the new characters and story.

The film is visually stunning, creating a very believable world. There are moments where I was so impressed with the visuals that I had to pause and ire the amazing CGI. It's incredible, especially how the technology still allows and captures the actors performances. All of the performances were wonderful in the film, both man or Ape.

Despite the abundance of CGI and elaborate special effects, the film maintains a heartfelt narrative, a feat many modern blockbusters struggle with. Kingdom builds on its legacy, introducing new questions about co-existence. The apes may be the dominant force, but they find themselves struggling to learn from their own history.

Set in the future from the trilogy, Caesar is now a distant memory, yet his influence remains profound. Caesar is now treated as a founding father and now different ape clans interpret his teachings in various ways that lead to conflicts, despite their shared belief in him.

In the end, "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes" is a superb continuation that stands out as a rare blockbuster rich in emotion, compelling characters, and captivating storytelling. It immerses viewers in its world with world-building, and it's visuals, setting up future installments brilliantly. A must-watch for franchise fans, it continues the reboot series' legacy while paving the way for a potentially exciting new stories.

The Fall Guy is a crowd pleasing film that kicks off the summer with a bang. It's an explosive blockbuster and a thrilling tribute to stunt performers and has a genuine affection for cinema as well, with lots of fun easter eggs for those that work in the movie business. Which is not surprising, as the film was directed by former stuntman David Leitch.

As someone in the film industry, I appreciated the subtle nods that only insiders would catch. However, it's also amusing to see how the film doesn't quite capture the reality of working on a film set as well.

Watch my fun YouTube review with my dog

The Fall Guy's iration for stunt work shines, offering an action-packed tribute to 90s-style popcorn flicks propelled by an abundance of explosions, car chases, classic one liners, and a fun romance. This is a film created for the soul purpose of entertainment and having a fun time at the theater and I think this film achieves this.

The Fall Guys cluttered and overstuffed narrative and truly absurd third and final act are the only thing that keep this simple action film from pure cinematic bliss. But it is Ryan Goslings charisma that propels this film over these flaws for a big win.

While everyone involved in this film deserves immense credit, Ryan's performance truly stands out, as his charisma and comedic timing brings this film to another level. I honestly don't think this film would be nearly as fun without him.

Emily Blunt also shines in her role and the chemistry with Ryan Gosling is undeniable. It adds a surprisingly believable rom com element to the action and feels completely genuine. Everyone seems to be having fun which also translates to the enjoyment the audience will experience watching this movie.

Ultimately, "The Fall Guy" stands as a heartfelt tribute to stuntmen and the film industry at large. Gosling's magnetic presence uplifts the film, compensating for any flaws and securing this film and is a great way to enter the summer blockbuster months.

One thing is for certain, The Zellner bros and the cast go all in with this film, they do not hold back! It is a bold and brave move to make this film and even more impressive they got a studio to distribute it.

You see, not much can prepare you for what is about to happen when you sit down with your popcorn and snacks to embark on this cinematic adventure. There I was, surrounded by other eager film enthusiasts (Nicole Kidman). I anticipated the return of Bigfoot to the silver screen, a sight I haven't seen since "Harry and the Hendersons." What unfolded on the silver screen for the next 90 or so minutes were famous Hollywood actors dressed in sasquarch suits, pissing, puking, pooping, fornicating, and tripping balls.

Please watch my fun YouTube review with my dog

The film takes a daring approach, choosing a documentary style where we get a feel for what it would be like if Sasquatchs roamed our Forrests. This documentary style is then blended with absurd humor and truly insightful and sincere dramatic moments.

While the abundance of bodily fluids might seem crude to some, it's not far off from what you might observe in a legitimate documentary about our primate relatives, such as chimpanzees or gorillas. We've all visited a zoo and witnessed these hairy creatures engaging in publicly inappropriate behaviors. Is it any more outrageous to see Hollywood star Jesse Eisenberg running around in a Sasquatch costume, urinating on roads and screaming like a maniac? Yes it is insane this has been made but it actually won me over.

It's undeniably wild, and despite the initial shock of witnessing such antics, the Zellers manage to infuse the film with deeper meaning. They evoke a sense of discomfort, unease, and shame, using the Sasquatches as a mirror to reflect our own struggles to control or deny our animalistic instincts.

The films meandering nature has you feeling like you are living with this group of Sasquatchs and the profound moments you experience with them encapsulates a weird and primal side of life rarely explored. Just like life, this film is all at once beautiful, disgusting, tranquil, funny, sad, and just plain weird.

"Sasquatch Sunset" is a film that pushes boundaries and challenges expectations, making it a polarizing experience that may not appeal to everyone. It's a unique blend of humor and depth, which took me a bit to unpack and grapple if I actually liked it, as my first instinct was to say what the fuck did I just watch

Personally, I found myself fully engaged in the journey with these Sasquatches, iring the filmmakers' bold ambition and the cast's remarkable commitment. The cast is literally and figuratively exposed in this film.

The makeup and costumes are impressively convincing, enhancing the performances to the point where I almost forgot I was watching actors in costume. However, the portrayal of the baby Sasquatch fell far short. Its puppetry was unconvincing and noticeably artificial, detracting from the film's overall immersion.

In the end "Sasquatch Sunset," is a bold and immersive cinematic experience that manages to evoke deeper contemplation about human nature and our primal instincts, once you get past the potty humor. "Sasquatch Sunset" may not be for everyone, but its boldness and the commitment of its cast and crew make it a unique and memorable cinematic experience

What month are we in? Just had to double check it was April because it's rare to experience a film so expertly crafted this early in the year. Usually, these months are reserved for average outings and the occasional box office spectacle. However, "Challengers" is poised to be among the best films of 2024, if not the very top, as I feel like Thor himself hit me with a lightning bolt, because this film is simply electric!

Watch my fun YouTube review of the film with my dog

I came out of this film almost giddy with how well it was made. Challengers' is a film about ion.

Director Luca Guadagnino's direction captivated me from the start. His mastery of the craft is evident, with tightly woven pacing and a lack of unnecessary embellishments. Luca brings a fresh perspective to tennis, viewing it as a metaphor for human relationships, where the absence of physical in the sport intensifies the tension, making it rich ground for exploring human connections.

Luca's direction, paired with cinematographer Sayombhu Mukdeeprom's crazy POV shots where you feel like the tennis ball or even below the tennis court itself as if it was glass, make the film visually exciting and dynamic. The film's stillness contrasts with the intensity of each racket swing, creating more build up of the drama.

The heartbeat of the film is the score by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, adding to the excitement, making tennis feel like the most thrilling sport on earth. The soundtrack absolutely gives the film a fresh vibe and needed energy and just might be their best score yet.

The trio of actors deliver stellar performances, each one of them hitting it out of the park and bringing so much to this film. Zendaya is mesmerizing with her cool hypnotic control that is all at once seductive and confident which not only puts our two other leads played by Mike Faist and Josh O'Connor under her spell, but the audience as well. All three of them are so fantastic in this and their chemistry blew me away.

Every aspect of "Challengers" builds to a climax that is nothing short of perfection. Without giving anything away, the film's climax is a masterful culmination of everything that came before. The anticipation, the build-up, and the execution all lead to a moment of pure cinematic bliss. Much like the characters in the films very memorable kissing scene, the entire movie is like intense foreplay leading and building the audience to this last tennis match.

In the end, Zendayas character keeps saying she just wanted some great Tennis and I just wanted a great film. We both got what we wanted. "Challengers" is a captivating masterpiece that keeps you engaged from beginning to end. The intense score adds to the suspense, while the actors deliver exceptional performances, culminating in a spectacular finale that leaves you on the edge of your seat.

Get your cheese grators ready (shudder) for "Boy Kills World" as Bill Skarsgård takes on the role of "Boy," a survivor seeking vengeance in a future fascist society. His target? The ruthless ruler, Hilda, played by Famke Janssen. Despite being mute and deaf, Boy communicates through intense lip-reading, with H. Jon Benjamin from "Bobs Burgers" and "Archer", providing his inner thoughts, adding a unique layer to the character.

Please see my YouTube review with my dog

The interplay between Benjamin's voiceover and Skarsgård's physical acting is key, but for some, it might be a hit or miss. I felt it was often distracting and detracted from the film's immersion, even though some of the jokes were quite funny. "Boy Kills World" attempts a Deadpool-esque style with constant wisecracks, but the jokes often fall flat, creating a disconnect between the voice and the performance. It was almost like playing a video game where the protagonist trys too hard to be cool and funny and ends up being more annoying than adding to the experience.

Despite these hiccups, "Boy Kills World" is a thrilling mix of dark humor and revenge, offering inventive and brutal action scenes that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Skarsgård's performance, conveyed solely through expressions, brings depth to the character, portraying him as a determined and compelling action hero.

While the film's constant wisecracks and borrowed cinematic elements might detract from its overall impact, "Boy Kills World" still manages to entertain with its memorable moments. However, it falls short of a full recommendation.

The early days of the Rock and I would argue this is the film where literally Arnold es the torch to this next generation action star.

The film works because it knows how to not only do action well but also have so much fun during it. The Rock really did become an action star here, willing to look like a fool as much as a cool action hero at once.

For me though, it was Christopher Walken who really is the attraction here. His quote about the tooth fairy has to be one of my favorite quotables of all time!

So much fun, check out the Rundown!

As a kid, this film was absolute magic! The Stan Winston practical dinosaurs still hold up today and the CGI is somehow better than most modern CGI fest, including Jurassic World which has become a cartoon.

The costumes, the characters, the location, props, set design, fun quotes, everything is so iconic and I will never get tired of watching it. Spielberg's magic at its best and amazing to think he released this and Schindler's List in the same year, not many could do that!

The film snob in me would love to pick something else as my favorite film of all time, but it is Jurassic Park that truly captured my heart. It inspired that little boy to get a job in the film business and help create magic for others and that is exactly what happened.

An exhilarating journey from start to finish, filled with inventive sequences, stunning cinematography and a raw, brutal performance by Patel. All of this adds up to become one of the best beat em up action bangers in recent years.

Check out my YouTube review with my dog

Director and actor Dev Patel electrifies the action genre with "Monkey Man," infusing it with intense ion and brutal violence.

The film immerses you in a visually extravagant world, overflowing with gritty realistic visuals and a guerilla-style approach to filmmaking... The film is banananas. And I'm not just saying that because he wears a Monkey mask. The film is very chaotic in nature enhancing both the story and the vibrant world.

Surprisingly, the film takes time to delve into political and cultural themes, adding a layer of complexity and purpose to the protagonist that we don't always get with our standard beat em up action film. The writing and story, while not groundbreaking, is delivered with compelling conviction and allows us to fully invest emotionally with the characters.

Sure, John Wick may be a badass, but has he ever hunted down corrupt police officers in a Monkey Mask with a army of trans assassins, delivering savage kills to anyone who gets in their way? Both of them do have dogs though... Hmmm, people who have dogs are pretty cool and bad ass .. right Leeloo? Riiiight?

Dev Patel combines his bloodshed with enough Indian culture that the experience has moments that feel like John Wick but ultimately Monkey Man stands on its own. The films greatness is a testament to Patels talent as a filmmaker, both in front and behind the camera.

Lust, steroids, murder, and mullets? Director Rose Glass's second film is a riveting romantic thriller starring Kristen Stewart as an Introverted gym manager who finds herself enamored by Jackie, played by Katy O'Brien who dreams of becoming a champion bodybuilder. Their romantic relationship triggers a chain of murders that entangles them and tests their relationship.

Will this film "Pump you up" or leave you strung out?

Click here to see video review with my dog

Filled with an atmospheric tension that permeates every frame, "Love Lies Bleeding" is a gritty romantic thriller that plays out almost like a twisted dream or Thelma and Louis on steroids.

LeeLoo... Have you been juicing? You look huge! Get those gains girl!

Co-writer and director Rose Glass, known for her work on "Saint Maud," showcases this film with her bold direction and captivating flair. In particular, her constant cuts to Jackie's hulk like muscle transformations that insinuate something almost sinister is being created or the steroid fever dreams are real stand outs for me but this film overall pulsates with some great cinematic visuals which help create this very unique wild ride.

It did take some time for me to warm up to Lou and Jackie's relationship, as it is a little underdeveloped but Kristin Stewart and Katy O'Brien deliver such powerhouse performances that you quickly get lost in this world and believe their obsessive love, obsessive being the key word.

In this film, love manifests as an obsessive addiction, much like Jackie's steroid dependency, Lou's unshakeable cigarette habit, or the entrapment within an abusive marriage that Lou's sister endures. Initially, Jackie's steroid use stemmed from a gesture of love with pure intentions from Lou, yet unchecked love can spiral into something unhealthy.

None of the characters adhere to traditional moral standards; their concealed secrets and vulnerabilities render them beautifully flawed and remarkably relatable. Amidst their shades of grey, the film explores the addictive nature of co-dependency and the ways love can build us up or tear us down. Or as they say LeeLoo, love hurts. And you see in this film how love hurts in various ways and is not limited to our two lead actors but is echoed by the ing cast as well.

Speaking of the ing cast, Ed Harris is fantastic as always, playing Lous's father and there's also a jaw dropping performance from Dave Franco that once again shows douchbag type of characters are his specialty.

In the end, the film ascends to new heights as the drama reaches its peak, leaving Stewart and O'Brien grappling desperately with their dire circumstances, yearning for escape.

The style of the storytelling dances with surrealism throughout which I really enjoyed and appreciated. However, let's address the proverbial Giant Lesbian in the room – the film's climax left me with mixed feelings. It veered into such exaggerated territory here that it momentarily pulled me out of the moment.

While I grasp the intended metaphor, symbolizing Jackie's character development away from the unhealthy steroid dependency towards pure love and self confidence, I can't shake the feeling that it was slightly excessive. While it serves the story's metaphors, visually, it borders on the comical and detracts from the moment's dramatic gravity a bit too much for my tastes, but I do applaud the artistic intent.

Obviously, if you haven't seen the film, you won't catch these references or jokes, so let's move on. Fortunately, the film swiftly recaptures its momentum in the final shot, which is simply flawless.

Probably my second favorite film this year after the sequel to Dune.

Was this perhaps a playful nod to a prequel for "She-Hulk: Attorney at Law"?

Following the successful reboot of Ghostbuster Afterlife, the Ghostbusters are back once again to answer the call, but is this call an easy studio money grab or an exciting new adventure in ghost bustin?

Watch YouTube review with my Dog

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire continues the storyline and characters introduced in the recent reboot, Ghostbusters: Afterlife. As a devoted fan of the original film, I found the nostalgic references and Stranger Things-inspired vibe of Afterlife captivating. While it offered a departure from the original's comedic tone, leaning more towards the throwback vibes of Stranger Things, I embraced the change. After all, I cherish the classics, and if I crave that familiar feel, I can always revisit Ghostbusters 1 and 2. Ghostbusters: Afterlife breathed new life into the franchise, even if it was mostly nostagia.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is a critical film for this rebooted franchise, as it needed to transition away from relying solely on fan service to carry the film forward. Regrettably, the film's writing and direction hinder the ability of the new cast to answer the call!

Rather than feeling spirited by fun references to the past, this film felt bogged down and haunted by rehashing every Ghostbuster trope. Director Gil Kenan's struggles to breath anything new into the franchise. Once more, we encounter the famous franchise ghosts, iconic locations, and the familiar faces of our original cast. While their presence is cherished, it only adds to the overcrowded ensemble, leaving little room for any character to truly shine. Lets face it, the only reason these characters are in the film is to get old fans like myself in the seat... well I guess you won, as they stole my money!

That's I'm not going to get suckered in with nostaglia anymore... Maybe X-Men 97... I'm so weak!

Mckenna Grace shines once again, much like in Afterlife, and if this Stranger Things-inspired makeover is the franchise's new direction, she should have been given the keys because she is the MVP. However, she gets lost among the plethora of characters, evident even just by glancing at the crowded movie poster. This results in a lack of development for any of them. While the cast showcases their talent and delivers some good moments, the film feels overall as Characters just continually pop in and out. The main storyline is too shallow to deliver on the emotional weight the film needs and most of tbe jokes dont quite land.

Furthermore, the family chemistry falls flat with their interactions feeling forced and the character motivations too generic, leaving the film feeling soulless. Its as if the very soul of this film has been captured in a Ghostbuster trap.

The original Ghostbusters had a distinctive 'pest control' aesthetic, which visually suited the cast from the first film. However, dressing them as a family in this role seems out of place and borders on being comical and cheesy. Also where is the science? They've made it seem that Ghost Bustin and using this complicated tech is so simple for any kid or Mother to just oick up and master.

The overuse of modern day CGI made me feel even more disconnected as it begins to feel more like a cartoon and makes Frozen Empire a good example of being victim to the souless modern blockbuster. Complete with the infusion of a contemporary CGI villain reminiscent of those in superhero movies, panders to a younger audience. It feels somewhat disingenuous to lure in old fans with nostalgia, only to reveal a shift toward shallower, bloated storylines that children won't notice.

It's as if you were anticipating a sophisticated movie review, only to find yourself with this review instead, complete with —a dog in the back seat, pandering to the masses. Did you hear that, Leeloo? You're just a pawn! That's what I call marketing!

In the end, Frozen Empire left me cold. While I appreciate a witty one-liner from Bill Murray as much as the next person, it simply wasn't enough to overshadow the fundamental flaws of the film. Frozen Empire had the potential to chart a bold new course for the franchise, yet it appears unable to break free from its reliance on past elements. Instead of forging new ground, the film feels like another predictable addition to the studio's profit-driven agenda. Undoubtedly, the adorable Baby Stay Puft Marshmallow Men may rake in some profits, but they can't disguise the film's lack of innovation.

The film loosely recounts director, writer, and star Julio Torres' ordeal trying to find an employer willing to sponsor his immigration visa, or face deportation.

Click here for full video review with my Dog

The film's previews lured me in with its whimsical and indie film vibes, and I must say, it did not disappoint! It exudes a Charlie Kaufman or Michel Gondry feeling, with a hint of "Devil Wears Prada" thrown in the mix.

In "Problemista," Julio Torres delivers a vibrant, imaginative tale following Alejandro, a young man from El Salvador aspiring to be a toy-maker in New York City. To achieve his dream, he must navigate the bureaucratic maze of finding a work visa sponsor. This leads him to become a personal assistant to the eccentric and colorful socialite Elizabeth, played by the incredible Tilda Swinton.

The US immigration experience fits beautifully into the insane, whimsical world Julio Torres creates, serving as a takedown of all the frustrating and unnecessary dehumanizing hoops we have to jump through in modern society and an unfortunately honest depiction of all of it.

The film's imaginative world and creative filmmaking make it a must-watch. If you enjoy the quirkiness of films like "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," you'll likely appreciate the creativity here.

Julio Torres shines as both a filmmaker and actor, with his unique approach adding to the film's charm. Little things like the way he walks always put a smile on my face. However, it's Tilda Swinton who steals the show, elevating her character to new heights of eccentricity. Imagine Meryl's Streeps character from Devil Wears Prada but more crazy cat lady or a Karen on steroids and you get the idea. Tilda is always fun to watch and she really created a fun character here.

Both characters are as different as eggs in their paintings, separate, but together, they help each other hatch and grow.

Funny, poignant, and visionary!

Do we really need another film where Liam Neeson plays a former badass forced to use his special set of skills? The answer: a resounding yes. There's a unique thrill in watching Neeson divy out justice to foolish villains who underestimate him, reminding them why he is Liam Neesons.

Set in In 1974 Ireland, Neesons is a contract killer who desires to leave his violent past behind. However his retirement is inturrupted by a group of IRA terrorits and he must equalize the situation.

Click Here to see my video review with my dog

The setting and pacing of this film really sets a good dramatic tone, which separates it from some of the more recent Liam Neeson action films. The pace is slower and allows the time to enjoy each character and build the tension. The small quaint Ireland town gives it a nice backdrop as well. While an action film at heart, the film does take time to shift away for a more dramatic role for Liam Neeson to play with. His character is filled with such regret and sorrow and helps make this one of his better roles in a few years.

Playing off him, is a chilling and powerful performance from Kerry Condon. The performances are able to carry the film from mediocrity while the film slowly unfolds from a character study to set it up for a fun action confrontation at the end.

While this film doesn't venture too far from a Liam Neeson formula thriller, it packs enough of a dramatic emotional punch and good performances that make the film worth a watch.

Was confused for about an hour into the movie wondering when Napoleon Dynamite would show up to do his dance number. I guess this isn't the sequel I thought it was and about some other power hungry Napoleon.

Watch YouTube Review with my dog

Upon learning that legendary director Ridley Scott and Joaquin Phoenix were reuniting for the first time since the iconic and classic Gladiator, I practically found myself in the movie theater seat, popcorn in hand, eagerly anticipating another grand-scale historical epic. Undoubtedly, Napoleon's remarkable history offers cinematic potential, but does Ridley Scott's portrayal of Napoleon manage to conquer our film-loving hearts as well?

Napoleon has faced criticism from history enthusiasts for its historical inaccuracies, But in it's defense, Ridley Scott wasn't making a documntary. This is a cinematic adventure focused on telling a good story rather than nitpicking every historical fact.

Napoleon delivers the epic scale we expect from Ridley Scott, featuring grand battles, impeccable and authentic costumes and set design, along with beautiful cinematography which are—all expertly directed and executed. The finished product obviously from a very skilled and talented director, making the challenging aspects of this film appear effortlessly handled.

However, despite its polished presentation, this colossal film lacks heart and genuine emotion, a common pitfall in sweeping epics and biopics. The focus on battle sequences and historical minutiae seems to mask a deficiency in the characters. This is not to lead you to believe the performances are bad, as they are quite the contrary. Both Joaquin Phoenix and Vanessa Kirby are wonderful in the film, but the script leaves a muddled impression about these figures.

I know Napoleon's role in the French revolution, but what did he feel about it? Why does he think about the conquests and the loss of so many men under his command? Does his wife really love him, what does she think of everything? The broad strokes of the characters are there, the insecure Napoleon and his constant thirst for power but I'm not sure what we are supposed to be left thinking of our protagonist as the credits role.

After three hours you kind of just go through the motions watching history play out, but theres no real sense of perspective to help ground the characters motivations. You can tell that these are interesting complex characters but you are never given a true point of view to help you understand them. Ironically, despite Ridley Scotts protest, it plays out more like a series of events documentary style rather than a good character study.

All of this leaves the film rather dry and devoid of any real heart. Contrasting this with another Ridley Scott historical drama like Gladiator which we had a much stronger connection to Maximus that drove the plot, with clear motivations that guided his decisions as a character. Maybe because Gladiator was more fictionalized Ridley didn't get so lost feeling like he had to checkmark all the historical events.

In the end this is an average entry in Ridley Scott's repertoire. Honestly I was torn on this one, with all the talent involved and I did enjoy it, but the film left me a bit cold for the reasons I mentioned. I think a truly great biopic doesn't just go through a sequence of events but gives you true cinematic insights we don't get from a history lesson. I was hoping for so much more and as a result this film gets a Yellow light of caution.

I was entertained for the most part but missing that extra spark of greatness for a Ridley Scott film.

A Thanksgiving movie stuffed with some great horrific scares!

In recent years, the horror genre has woven its way into our holidays, with films like "It's a Wonderful Knife" and "My Bloody Valentine" exploring the darker side of holiday cheer. However, Thanksgiving has largely been overlooked in the realm of holiday horrors. That is, until Eli Roth crafted the captivating Thanksgiving trailer for Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino's Grindhouse films. The trailer's instant appeal hinted at the potential for a standalone film, marking the third feature-length adaptation from Grindhouse's fictitious trailers. The question looms: is this film truly something to be thankful for?

Channeling the timeless allure of the classic slasher films, Director Eli Roth aspires, with Thanksgiving, to not just introduce a new horror icon but to also pay homage to the timeless classics. Sadly, the current market is flooded with slasher films that lack originality, merely replicating the framework of past classics without injecting any fresh inspiration. Fortunately, Eli Roth, a seasoned name in the horror genre, appears genuinely inspired by the film's setting. He skillfully carves out a unique horror experience that boldly distinguishes itself from the conventional pack.

The actual set up for the film is very tongue in cheek and makes for a perfect set up for a Thanksgiving horror film. It is 2022, during a chaotic Black Friday sale in Massachusetts, at Best Buy style superstore. A crowd stampede results in numerous gross fatalities. A year later, preparations for another sale stir controversy in the town. Our stereotpical teen protogonists, Jessica, her love triangle, her friends, and residents face the aftermath as a new mysterious killer wearing a John Carver mask is on a vendetta for those involved in the Black Friday riot.

While I normally am not a big fan of Eli Roth's work, surprisingly, Thanksgiving managed to hit the mark. The gore is undeniably brutal, veering into a bit too much torture-porn territory for my taste. However, Roth's infusion of humor and the film's thematic elements introduces that perfect touch of classic, campy horror, elevating it to ridiculously enjoyable levels. In a genre where many modern slashers lack this fun factor, Thanksgiving stands out. Its DNA seems closely aligned with Scream, not just in its self-awareness but also in its commitment to reveling in the sheer enjoyment of the horror experience. Also like Scream it is a whodunit slasher, which just adds to the fun.

Eli Roth brings an invigorating burst of inspiration to this film, wielding aggressive and over-the-top direction that pulsates with energy. Packed with clever, cheesy holiday references, the kills are a masterclass in creativity — brutal and gruesome yet often laced with a dark hilarity. Even though it is called Thanksgiving, I don't recommend this film before Thanksgiving dinner as you will likely lose your appitite.

While I did encounter a few qualms with the film, particularly finding the ending somewhat anticlimactic, especially the final shot, but overall, it's undeniably a feast for slasher enthusiasts, delivering a bloody good time that fans of the horror genre will gobble up. This is why, for a slasher horror film this film easily gets the Green Light from me. If you do not enjoy blood and gore, this still isn't the film for you.

Does the new Taika Waititi film score or drop the ball?

Click Here for YouTube Review with my Dog

Taika Waititi, initially riding high on successful films, stumbled with "Thor: Love and Thunder" but aims to rebound with the comedy "Next Goal Wins." The film tells the story of the world's worst soccer team striving for redemption.

The narrative centers on an American Samoa soccer team's struggle for victory, introducing an emotionally unstable American coach, played by Michael Fassbender, in a familiar sports film trope. Despite embracing clichés, the movie cleverly satirizes them, offering a predictable yet entertaining transformation of the team.

Taika's vibrant comedic style strikes a balance between humor and drama, a welcome return to form. However, the film succumbs to average sports tropes, occasionally veering into mean-spirited humor, especially regarding the indigenous society. While commendable for representation, the execution may come across as insensitive, portraying the worst soccer team not only as inept players but also as caricatured and stupid individuals.

While the White coach and Jaiyah, the first openly non-binary and trans woman in a FIFA World Cup qualifier, are the most developed characters, their bonding feels rushed. The rushed development extends to the overall plot, relying on genre familiarity rather than earning emotional moments.

The film lacks Waititi's trademark charm. It falls short of expectations, feeling formulaic and occasionally insensitive. "Next Goal Wins" offers an average viewing experience, neither compelling nor outright disappointing but does offer a few laughs.

Was I naughty this year? What did I do to deserve this?
Ho Ho Horrible movie!

Click Here for YouTube Review with my Dog

"It's a Wonderful Knife" boldly reimagines Frank Capra's holiday classic, "It's a Wonderful Life," infusing it with a macabre twist that decks the halls with blood and horror. Is this film more than a gimmicky take on the old holiday classic, or does it merit a spot on Santa's naughty list?

The storyline follows a masked killer terrorizing the snowy town of Angel Falls. During a Christmas Eve party, the tables turn when Winnie, a courageous teenager, gains the upper hand by electrocuting the knife-wielding slasher with jumper cables and a battery – a jump start to the holiday season, indeed!

The slasher is revealed to be the town's greedy real estate developer, played by Justin Long. With his demise, one might assume the tale concludes with a happily-ever-after. The end, right?

Hold on, there's a twist!

A year later, Winnie, grappling with emotional turmoil, wishes she had never been born. This is where the "It's A Wonderful Life" reference takes center stage, only to quickly dissipate. Winnie's wish seemingly comes true as she finds herself back in the still-terrorized town, discovering that Justin Long is alive because she never was there to vanquish him.

While the premise held promise, the film falters in execution. It appears the filmmakers may have patted themselves on the back after conceiving the premise, forgetting just a tad little detail... the rest of the film! Unlike successful gimmicky horror films that I enjoyed like "Happy Death Day" and "Freaky," "It's a Wonderful Knife" simply does not make the cut!

The film suffers from underdeveloped and poorly assembled elements, aiming for Hallmark movie vibes but ending up as bad rather than satirical. The underdeveloped script is riddled with cringe-worthy dialogue, and even Justin Long's peculiar performance can't salvage the wreckage. Justin Longs's teeth haven't been been this prominent since Tusk.

The lackluster direction of the film amplifies all of these issues, drenching this wintery town with yellow snow. The characters also lack purpose, making the overall experience feel inconsequential.

Even campy slasher films can redeem themselves with engaging kills, but "It's a Wonderful Knife" can't even get these right, as most of the kills are boring and uninspired. The film also delivers such a wierd tacked on conclusion at the end that goes off the rails and brings the film down even more. It was just unnecessary and I can't imagine what these writers were thinking... More than likely there likely wasn't much thinking at all.

This film certainly doesn't brings us any Holiday cheer..

Theres no point in continuing to beat this movie to death, although that would be at least one satisfying kill! Save yourself the time; engage in something more worthwhile. Without a doubt, this is the worst film I've seen this year. Now, I must cleanse my palate by revisiting the true "It's a Wonderful Life."

If you are determined to have yourself a bloody Merry Christmas I recommend last year's Violent Night, stupid mindless violence with a side of egg nog.

Saw X 325vp 2023 - ★★★ (contains spoilers) https://letterboxd.sitesdebloques.org/redorgreenlight/film/saw-x/ letterboxd-review-470151004 Thu, 9 Nov 2023 04:52:41 +1300 2023-11-08 No Saw X 2023 3.0 951491 <![CDATA[

This review may contain spoilers.

Can you teach an old SAW, new tricks? Apparently you can!

Click Here for YouTube Review with my Dog

"Saw X" signifies the tenth installment in the infamous Saw franchise. I must confess, I've never been a fan of the "torture porn" genre, as popularized by films like Saw and Hostel. Gruesome acts, such as self-amputation, never truly frighten me; they tend to prioritize shock value over genuine horror. I tend to prefer my horror with intricate metaphors or the classic, campy slasher vibes.

That being said, my initial foray into the Saw series was driven by curiosity when the first film hit the screens. While I've never quite embraced the excessively brutal traps, the overarching storyline did manage to capture my attention. It's akin to a Soap Opera, filled with twists and turns, albeit with a bit more body dismemberment.

What's genuinely intriguing about Jigsaw is his character—a man suffering from cancer who abides by a unique moral code, making him a compelling figure in the realm of Horror.

Tobin Bell's portrayal of Jigsaw played a pivotal role in the initial success of Saw, and regrettably, the franchise suffered after his premature exit.

After skipping several installments, my curiosity was piqued once again with "Spiral," thanks to the casting of Samuel L. Jackson and Chris Rock. How could that possibly go wrong, right? Well, they managed to find a way!

Now, we've arrived at the tenth installment, where Hollywood studios, driven by obvious financial gains and greed, recognized their mistake in prematurely ending Jigsaw, a.k.a. John Kramer. Their brilliant plan to resurrect him? Simply set the movie between the events of Saw and Saw 2, with John Kramer receiving his cancer diagnosis and hoping to find a cure in Mexico.

And don't worry, the filmmakers make it astonishingly easy to distinguish between Mexico and the US. Thankfully, Mexico naturally comes with a yellow filter in all films; otherwise, things could get quite confusing.

Saw X caught my attention when I heard that Tobin Bell was returning as Jigsaw. To my shock, it took until the tenth movie for Saw to evolve into an actual movie. Yes, a genuine story unfolds, providing a deeper understanding of the John Kramer character and why he was driven to construct these traps. You might even find yourself sympathizing with this deranged serial killer, perhaps more than his victims for most of the film.

While these movies often serve as platforms for gruesome torture scenes, this particular installment genuinely focuses on storytelling rather than fixating solely on the traps.

Tobin Bell, at the age of 81, delivers a compelling, nuanced, and vulnerable performance that elevates Saw to a new level. It's equally delightful to have his original accomplice, Amanda, portrayed by Shawnee Smith, back in the picture, shedding light on their relationship in a more dramatic and detailed manner.

The traps themselves in this installment feel more personalized, serving as consequences of the victims' own crimes. The presence of John Kramer observing them eye-to-eye adds weight to these moments. I also appreciated the scenes involving Amanda's contemplation of Jigsaw's moral code and their discussions between traps, which added complexity to their characters and the overall narrative.

Fear not, fans of the series still get their fair share of gore—the new traps are suitably horrific and should satisfy the bloodlust.

All in all, I was genuinely impressed with this film. Injecting real character depth and story development into a franchise on its 10th sequel is commendable. However, I did have one major issue with the character of Dr. Peterson.

I can hardly believe I'm saying this, but Saw X, the tenth installment in the franchise, is good! Of course, this recommendation is for those who already appreciate the Saw genre. If you can't stomach gruesome and horrific traps, this might not be for you. But for fans of Saw, it's akin to the Godfather.

Now, for the major issue I had with the film—spoilers ahead, so return later if you haven't seen it.

Throughout the film, I found Dr. Peterson's character to be cartoonishly evil. At times, she felt like a Bond villain, pushing the boundaries of plausibility. Not only does she subject John Kramer to his own trap, but also an innocent little boy, which feels somewhat excessive.

This character is shown scamming dying cancer patients, but turning her into a sadistic killer seemed like a stretch. Why would she want to harm an innocent child or even her own accomplices when she's primarily a con artist?

Furthermore, she ruthlessly stomps on a fellow accomplice's neck, despite ing Jigsaw's test and earning her life based on his moral code. Even Amanda is horrified by her actions, creating confusion about who the true villain in the film is.

I understand that Dr. Peterson needed to take a drastic turn for viewers to root for Jigsaw, but her punishment, given the context of the Saw universe, seems too lenient for a remorseless killer. No surgical removal of part of her brain or having her face pushed through barbed wire—she doesn't even lose a pinky toe! Dr. Peterson gets away with a mere slap on the wrist. While I'm not typically one to encourage violence, this might have been the right time for Jigsaw to unleash his signature creativity. This lady certainly deserved it.

Can a grumpy, smelly, disheveled alcoholic professor reignite my holiday spirit?

Watch full review on YouTube with my Dog

About two decades ago, Director Alexander Payne and Paul Giamatti graced us with the beloved film "Sideways," which earned numerous accolades, including AFI's Movie of the Year and an Academy Award for its screenplay. Now, this dynamic duo reunites in "The Holdovers." The burning question: is this reunion a cause for excitement?

Set in the winter of 1970 at the prestigious Barton Academy, where students and faculty eagerly anticipate the Christmas Winter Break. Yet, not everyone shares the same excitement, as "The Holdovers" - yes, that's the movie's title - find themselves stuck at the school during the break.

Paul Giamatti steps into the role of Paul Hunham, an unpopular and irritable ancient history teacher who seems to take pleasure in handing out F-pluses. He's given a two-week assignment to oversee a group of students during the holiday break. However, a twist of fate leaves only one student in the care of our Professor and the school's grieving cook, leading to an unexpected bond.

This film beautifully portrays the connection between three lonely individuals who each other in overcoming life's most isolating disappointments while concealing their deep-seated personal failures. Each character hides profound pain beneath the surface.

"The Holdovers" is a rare gem that marries emotional depth and humor, capturing my Grinch-like heart. I dare say it's destined to the ranks of my favorite Christmas classics. It isn't your typical saccharine holiday film; it tells a bittersweet story about those who feel more isolated and forgotten during the holidays. The characters aren't just delightful; they're absolutely captivating. The masterful direction allows us to fall in love with them and become fully immersed in their story.

"The Holdovers" stands as Alexander Payne's finest work since "Nebraska," confirming his skill in crafting films centered around complex, emotionally charged characters with fractured relationships. While the plot may follow a somewhat predictable path, the impeccable direction ensures it's the journey that captures your heart, leaving you entirely engrossed rather than questioning its familiarity.

Alexander Payne has a gift for making the familiar feel fresh yet retaining that nostalgic charm. The film envelops you like a cozy, familiar blanket, its warmth emanating from the heart rather than relying on manipulative storytelling. Sprinkle in some wonderful Cat Stevens songs, and this film welcomes you like a warm hug. In fact, I wouldn't have minded a longer runtime, given how much I relished spending time with these characters.

In "The Holdovers," the success of the film hinges on the performances, and thankfully, the trio of actors in this film delivers.

Alexander Payne and Paul Giamatti undoubtedly bring out the best in each other. Giamatti excels in portraying an endearing yet flawed character. He transcends the grumpy guy trope seen in countless films and delivers a lovable yet complicated performance. This might be a career-defining role for him, deserving consideration among the year's best actors.

Completing the trio, Dominic Sessa and Da'Vine Joy Randolph stand toe-to-toe with Paul Giamatti, offering subdued yet powerful performances. Their simplicity adds depth to the film.

This makeshift family is compelling to watch as their contrasting personalities make for an enjoyable dynamic, rendering the film highly rewatchable.

In the end, "The Holdovers" stands as one of the most satisfying film experiences of the year. Alexander Payne rebounds from the disappointing "Downsizing" to deliver one of the best films of the year and his career. It possesses a timeless quality and is an absolute must-watch this holiday season.

DeNiro and DiCaprio at last, is this Scorsese's Eras Tour? We don't get friendship bracelets, but you do get to see DeNiro spank DiCaprio, so there's that.

Click Here for YouTube Review with my Dog

I've been eagerly awaiting this moment for years! Ever since I heard that Scorsese was adapting this book, I've been following the film's development with a ion—don't worry, no restraining orders involved.

What truly set my heart racing was the cast. Scorsese was finally uniting his two great muses, DeNiro and DiCaprio, making it an unforgettable cinematic experience.

"Killers of the Flower Moon" quickly became my must-see film of the year. This gripping tale, based on David Grann's bestselling book, is set in the 1920s when oil is discovered in Osage County. Osage Native Americans, who suddenly found themselves wealthy, became the target of tragic murders as others sought their fortunes.

Much like "Gangs of New York," the film served as a history lesson, bringing to light little-known atrocities. Scorsese's meticulous attention to historical accuracy was remarkable.

His encounter with the Osage Nation led to a reevaluation of the script. Despite not being Osage, Scorsese's commitment to authentic storytelling did justice to their untold history.

The film is uncompromising in its vision, and it's astonishing that, at 80 years old, Scorsese still delivers with such vigor and energy.

"Killers of the Flower Moon" masterfully blends a classic Scorsese crime drama with a heart-wrenching romance, unfolding over three and a half hours. Be warned, no bathroom breaks here!

In an age of short attention spans and fast-paced movies, the film's extended runtime is entirely justified. It offers a deep dive into historical world-building and complex characters, allowing us to connect with them on an intimate level.

Scorsese's signature filmmaking techniques, along with the captivating musical score, elevate the movie. The actors deliver award-worthy performances.

While the entire cast shines, the focus falls on the trio of DiCaprio, DeNiro, and Lily Gladstone, who brighten the screen.

DiCaprio's character is his most intricate yet, blending charm, humor, and moral ambiguity. Robert DeNiro's performance is quietly menacing, charismatic, and ever-present.

The reunion of DiCaprio and DeNiro is a highlight, and the film offers plenty of compelling reasons to watch.

Surprisingly, it's Lily Gladstone who steals the show. Her portrayal is captivating, making it seem effortless.

All three actors deserve consideration for awards, and Scorsese's careful direction ensures they shine, cementing this film as a masterpiece.

"Killers of the Flower Moon" is another masterpiece in Scorsese's storied career. He continues to impress at age 80, and this film is destined to be a classic.

Could this film actually be any good after such an awful trailer? Surprisingly, yes!

Click for YouTube Review with my Dog

I attended my second Regal Theaters Monday movie mystery night, where the film remains a complete surprise. My first experience with "Dumb Money" was a pleasant gamble. This time, as "Freelance" appeared on the screen, I had my doubts. Despite a trailer that seemed terrible, this mystery movie actually exceeded my expectations.

The film stars John Cena as an ex-special operative turned lawyer, whose life takes an unexpected turn. His old special forces buddy, portrayed by Christian Slater, offers him a seemingly straightforward bodyguard job for journalist Claire Wellington (played by Alison Brie). The catch? Claire is interviewing a fictional South American dictator, the very figure Cena blames for a tragic previous mission. Of course, the mission becomes far more complicated than anticipated, leading to an action-packed adventure.

"Freelance" initially looked like a typical action film, but it won me over with its humor and action sequences. It provided mindless entertainment with the right touch of humor, delivering what I hoped "Retirement Plan" would be. John Cena's acting has notably improved, showcasing his comedic range. Alison Brie played well alongside him, but it's Juan Pablo Raba's portrayal of the dictator that truly shines.

The chemistry among the cast was exceptional and kept the film fun and entertaining. The story had more political intrigue than standard action fare, with unexpected twists. However, it might be a tad too complex.

Despite being a fun watch, "Freelance" suffered from formulaic characters and plot points. Certain story aspects felt drawn-out, and the action scenes, while enjoyable, didn't offer much innovation. Nevertheless, I'm glad I watched it, showing the value of the Regal Mystery Monday Movie.

While it feels both original and forgettable, it might play better on a smaller screen via streaming services.

If you don't A.I. in this film, you might as well shoot a Child Robot in the head.

Click for YouTube Review with my Dog

In the sci-fi film "The Creator," directed by Gareth Edwards, we are treated to a refreshing break from the dominance of franchise-driven movies. Set in the year 2065, this original story explores a world where robots have evolved to resemble humans, save for a telltale robotic feature at the back of their heads.

The plot unfolds after a nuclear explosion in California, leading to a U.S. ban on robots and a mission to eradicate them, while Asia continues to embrace them. This ideological divide sparks a war, and the film centers on the pursuit of the elusive Creator, the mastermind behind advanced AI beings that might hold the key to ending the conflict.

Visually, "The Creator" is nothing short of a masterpiece. The cinematography is breathtaking, all the more impressive considering it was shot on a Sony FX3 camera priced at less than $4,000. This film is a testament to the idea that skill and vision matter more than the equipment's cost. With an $80 million budget, it raises questions about the extravagance of some major Hollywood productions that pale in comparison.

Unlike some high-budget films ("The Flash") riddled with distracting CGI, "The Creator" maintains a seamless and authentic visual presentation. The world-building is top-notch, crafting a fully realized 2065 with a harmonious blend of the countryside and advanced technology. Gareth Edwards' vision of a Sci-Fi Vietnam War movie is brilliantly realized.

The film is not just about its visual prowess; it offers a compelling narrative reminiscent of "Ex Machina," raising questions about android rights, the consequences of creating human-like beings, and offering nuanced perspectives on both sides. Although it doesn't veer far from the Man Vs. Artificial Intelligence genre, it makes up for it with heart and narrative structuring.

The film excels thanks to remarkable performances by the cast. John David Washington leads the way, delivering an emotionally charged performance alongside young talent Madeleine Yuna Voyles, who impressively exhibits acting range. Notable ing performances come from Ken Watanabe, Allison Janney, and Gemma Chan.

In conclusion, "The Creator" is an original, visually stunning, thought-provoking, and engaging sci-fi film that deserves recognition. I hope this film's success serves as a lesson to larger studios, so do check it out!

It does indeed live inside a mason jar, which is why I'm only eating Jelly out of a plastic from now on. No more Mason Jars for me!

Click Here for YouTube review with my Dog

Coming into "It Lives Inside," I had no idea what to expect because I hadn't seen any marketing or trailers for the film beforehand. It's refreshing to experience something with no expectations.

Directed by first-time director Bishal Dutta, the film follows Samida, a young woman who's thrust into a world of horror when her former best friend, who has been acting strangely and clutching a glass mason jar, confides in her about an evil entity inside the jar.

Not believing her old friend, Samida shatters the jar on the ground, unwittingly releasing whatever malevolent force was lurking within. This beast has roots in Indian culture and seeks to take the souls from its victim, killing anyone that will get in the way of achieving this goal.

Unfortunately, "It Lives Inside" doesn't venture far from typical horror tropes we've seen countless times before. As it shares DNA with films like "Boogeyman" or "Lights Out." Many of the scares rely on jump-scare tactics, and some story elements and dialogue are painfully predictable and average. There's one scene involving her teacher that had me yelling at the screen due to the character's unnecessary drawn out sequence of bad decisions, a common plot-driving trope that's annoying, especially when the scene was already quite thrilling without it.

It's a shame the film is plagued by these problems because it has some intriguing elements that could have elevated it to another level. Despite sticking to some well-worn horror tropes, "It Lives Inside" manages to deliver several effective scares, featuring a practical effects monster that looks quite good. The beast mostly stays in the shadows, with glowing eyes and a faint silhouette. These elements, combined with eerie sounds, create a sense of anticipation and dread. The eventual monster reveal later in the film doesn't disappoint.

The direction of the horror sequences is skillful, keeping you on the edge of your seat and building tension effectively. However, it's the dialogue and storytelling leading up to these moments that often fall short, settling for generic horror setups and lackluster dialogue.

The cast does a commendable job, making the most of what they're given. Megan Suri leads the cast and infuses her character with depth, particularly in her internal struggle to downplay her cultural heritage.

This dilemma provides the film with its unique identity and feel, but discussing it in depth would involve spoilers, which I'll leave for my YouTube review.

In the end, "It Lives Inside" is a satisfying and enjoyable horror film, but it's held back by the typical horror tropes.

If "Signs" and "Panic Room" had a cinematic love child, this would be the result!

"No One Will Save You" is a horror thriller directed by Brian Duffield, delivering not only scares but also deeper metaphors.

It stars Kaitlyn Dever as Brynn, a woman who lives alone in an old country house on the outskirts of town. We are not given very much information about Brynn but it seems she is an outcast, as we see her hiding from people she sees or townsfolk not returning her friendly waves. Clearly, she's done something to upset them and become an outcast. But before we can explore further, Brynn's night takes a terrifying turn when she realizes there's a home break in.

This isn't your typical house thief, instead, Brynn quickly realizes it's an Alien. From this point on, the film had me on the edge of my seat with non-stop thriller action and horrific excitment.

Normally, I prefer monsters to hide in the shadows, leaving my imagination to run wild with what the creature looks like. What you imagine in your head is usually much scarier. But this film is effective in immediately revealing the aliens. Director Brian Duffield wants the audience to know, that this isn't some devil incarnate supernatural beast that was conjured up, but instead are extraterrestrail beings. The design of the aliens is immediately recognizable, akin to the common "Grey" alien achetype.

Duffield mentioned that it's been a while since we've seen a Grey in a film, which is a bit like doing a dinosaur movie without a T-Rex. I have to agree; it was refreshing to see a familiar alien design instead of the more insect-like varieties we often get. Just because they look familiar doesn't make them any less terrifying. The film features various forms of these aliens later in the film, adding to the tension as we try to decipher their intentions and capabilities.

One of the most suprising aspects of this film is that it's almost entirely devoid of dialogue, I believe only one sentence is actually spoken in the entire film. The story is brought to life thanks to an absolutely wonderful performance by Kaitlyn Dever. She's in every frame of the film and must convey a full range of human emotions, all by herself, without playing off another actor's performance for the majority of the film. Dever's performance is utterly immersive and we feel we are right there with her.

While Dever's performance draws you in, it is Duffield and cinematographer Aaron Morton who give us an absolute master class for building scenes with dread and very ominous visuals. Every little creak in the floorboard or terrifying glimpse of the Alien lurking through the doorway will have you clutching your armrests in suspense. It is directed very simply and minimalist, letting the thrills and powerful images do the talking. The film doesn't rely on cheap jump scares but instead maintains an unrelenting pace. Once the aliens are discovered, the film doesn't let up, leaving you little time to catch your breath unitl its unnerving conclusion.

My main issue with the film is that it was dumped onto Hulu rather than getting a proper theatrical run. It would have been even more enchanced on the big screen with booming sound.

Now, to sum it up, you don't need to be a brilliant naked alien to guess how I feel about this movie. "No One Will Save You" offers horror enthusiasts a unique experience with metaphorical depth. Don't miss this fun alien thrill ride!

I get so nostagliac for true story period piece movies like this, as we go all the way back to... 2021? It's crazy looking back at this time, feels like only a few years ago.

"Dumb Money" takes us back to the crazy true story of the GameStop Wall Street frenzy

The movie revolves around a YouTuber who uses his channel and Reddit to stir up a frenzy among amateur traders, urging them to invest in the struggling GameStop stock. Say "GameStop Stock" five times fast.

The goal is to challenge the elite Wall Street investors and billionaires, and this army of Reddit and TikTok enthusiasts ends up costing the Wall Street fat cats billions. Who doesn't love an underdog tale of the little guy taking on the super-wealthy Wall Street moguls?

It's a fascinating true story and felt right up Director Craig Gillespie's alley. He's been nailing these entertaining dramatizations, like "I, Tonya" and "Pam and Tommy," which mix true stories with comedic flair. Gillespie captures the moment in time well, including the use of COVID masks and protocols, which brought back some memories.

Gillespie directs "Dumb Money" with a self-aware style, blending absurdity and comedy in a straightforward manner. It's reminiscent of director Adam McKay's films like "The Big Short," "Dick," and "Don't Look Up."

The cinematography and score are top-notch, with catchy music adding to the film's overall vibe. Who knew "WAP" would pair so well with Wall Street greed?

Understanding Wall Street jargon can be tough, but Gillespie tackles it ingeniously. He uses memes, TikToks, YouTube videos, and pop culture references to simplify the complex financial language, making it accessible to all. While some details are glossed over, it keeps the film's pace fast and the audience engaged.

The film is tightly edited, focusing on humor and chaos, but it also delivers intense and nerve-wracking moments as amateur stockholders grapple with tough decisions. Keep those diamond hands strong!

As soon as Paul Dano dons that red Rambo headband, you know things are about to get wild. It's a battle of David vs. Goliath, and it's a blast to watch, even if those in power don't play fair. The film shows the incredible power people can wield when they come together.

The characters are well-written, brought to life by an outstanding ensemble cast. Paul Dano leads the way, but there's a long list of actors, including Seth Rogen, Sebastian Stan, Nick Offerman, Vincent D'Onofrio, America Ferrera, Anthony Ramos, and more, who shine in their roles. Special kudos to Pete Davidson for adding extra laughs and enjoyment.

And yes, as the folks behind me in the theater noted, we did get to see Pete Davidson's naked behind, so there's that.

In conclusion, "Dumb Money" is not only a captivating true story but also a film with solid writing, entertaining comedic direction, and remarkable performances. It's a smart choice for a movie night and one of the best films of the year so far. It's a crowd-pleaser for sure!
