I had been avoiding this one for a while now because it just felt like it had such a gimmicky premise (which it does), but I kept hearing good things about it over the years, so I gave it a shot tonight.
While it has its problems, the people were right about this one. Source Code is one hell of a fast-paced thriller that flies by while you hang on for the ride. It’s just a great, well-made popcorn movie with an interesting take on the “Groundhog’s Day” thing. It’s not like it’s never been done, but it’s a unique version of the idea that has some cool things I didn’t expect.
The whole cast is great in this, but Jake Gyllenhaal is really showing why he’s an old school movie star in this. He’s just great to watch. And Jeffrey Wright is in this and he’s hamming it up. Idk if he knew the movie was going to be so serious in tone (it gets legit heavy multiple times), because he’s almost playing the character like he’s in a Roland Emmerich movie. It’s not bad, it’s just a fun and interesting choice.
I mentioned that Source Code had some problems, which it does, but they aren’t dealbreakers by any means. It can get a bit cheesy at times. Also, you really just have to give in and go with the premise and not really question it too much. And sometimes I was a bit ahead of the twists — although there were more than enough to keep it interesting. Even with these issues, the movie is just so entertaining that it’s hard to be mad.
It’s just a good, old school edge of your seat thriller to enjoy with a beer.
