Dune: Part Two

2024

Dune is a story about a prophecy of a coming messiah in the desert. It deals with many themes. Is Paul Atreides the fulfillment of the promised Muad'Dib? Is the Bene Gesserit managing a human breeding program for the emperor's throne? Is Paul Atreides a willing participant in his mother's crafting of a religious narrative surrounding his rise to the throne?

Since watching this fantastic film, I have started reading the books and appreciate how Denis Villeneuve interprets Frank Herbert's vision. He takes many broader themes from Herbert's sci-fi books and provides modern approaches.

The Freemen are depicted as people groups from Middle Eastern desert areas. Chani is a woman with agency who decides how far she will go with Paul, especially after his betrayal. Paul balances his role as a leader and whether or not he should fulfill his visions.

I also loved the unique portrayals of the different worlds. House Harkonnen is the primary antagonist, and their home world is absent of color, which is a great detail that highlights their brutal nature. In previous films, we see Caladan, the home plane for House Atreides. It is a lush world with large bodies of water and green life, contrasting the desert planet Arrakis.

Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya are great casting choices for the young Duke of House Atreides and the beautiful Freman woman who can navigate the desert. They have great chemistry and translate across the screen.

Villeneuve effectively communicates the plot and narrows the focus to a visual medium. It's easy to forget that books can share stories using methods not easily translated for TV or film. Runtimes do not constrain books to capture an audience's attention, so Villeneuve does a great job balancing the focus on characters and certain storylines.
Because of Frank Herbert's and later his son's world-building, Dune provides vast opportunities for Villeneuve to explore the future.

Villeneuve is fantastic at building his interpretation of Dune, which provides an excellent opportunity for the franchise to expand.
Dune: Part 2 is an enjoyable film; I don't recall becoming bored or disinterested at any point. I look forward to any future projects. Having read the books now, I might revisit David Lynch's film, which I struggled to get through twice.
