On a purely technical and filmmaking level this movie is a fucking masterpiece. Although i understand that the creators didn’t intend any harm from buffalo bill the character definitely reinforces transphobia. The average audience member especially in 1991 is led to linking harmful and dehumanizing assumptions about buffalo bill and trans folk, so much so that the name has become a slur used by transphobic people to dehumanize trans people and justify their own bigotry/insecurities.
