i went into this movie 100% blind. this movie had so much potential based on the setting of the film alone, but they decided to take it in an unfortunately generic direction. in the movie itself they even mention monsters that would have been more interesting to watch, but it turns out that the actual monsters are… vampires? as if we don’t have enough vampire movies. as soon as that was revealed the movie lost all of its suspense for me. this is a monster that we as the audience know FAR too well, but as jordan peele noted, not seeing/knowing the monster is what makes a monster scary.
i also felt that there were serious pacing issues as well as relationships and concepts that were brought up and then seemingly forgotten about. for example, the entire beginning about the musicians who can connect the living to the dead or whatever. this entire concept was actually realized in the film one (1) singular time. so you’re telling me there is this whole entire lore about connecting spirits from the past, present, and future and it can be used to heal communities or attract evil spirits (their words), only given to certain people throughout history AND THE ONLY TIME IT WAS EVER USED WAS JUST TO ATTRACT SOME VAMPIRES TO A PARTY, even though we as the audience already met them and knew they were around before this event even took place??? then the entire thing is dropped completely and never brought up again. like WHAT???? why even mention this at all? the vampires could’ve just smelled blood or whatever and showed up, there was no need for this extra layer. there are a million other examples of this but i won’t belabor the point.
overall, it was a pretty movie but the plot just really didn’t do it for me (please for the love of god choose a monster that isn’t a vampire or zombie)

oof. i know i’m not the first to make the “hot mess” joke but jesus christ. it felt like massive chunks of this movie were missing. the film didn’t really take any time to make the audience care about the characters at all — i literally couldn’t have cared less about anyone (with the exception of fiona shaw’s character). ingrid in particular felt incredibly underdeveloped, to the point where a good portion of her lines resulted in actual laughter in my screening because they were seemingly so out of place.
