Re-watched after more than a decade. I wasn't too impressed with the movie when it was first released. The story line was fairly dour.
I enjoyed the visuals this time around. Some how, it has aged better than I it.
]]>Gomes is a wonderful director. So, it is nice to watch him at play. He is too much at play here though. It is like a meandering diary more than a film with scattered notes. I don't mind it, despite it being tedious.
]]>It suffered from the same flaws which the final seasons of Game of Thrones suffered from. The focus was on relaying one event after the other rather than having some breathing space and pause. You need proper writing, not just events to feel for the characters, even in a well developed universe like the marvel one. The plot was quite good and I also didn't mind the movie. In fact, I enjoyed it. However, it could have been much better.
]]>Drugs, death and decay beautifully shot.
]]>What is ion? What if you are not good enough? Is it all a lie? Is it not? What gives happiness in the end and frees you from your shackles? The Disciple is layered and brilliant.
]]>This film is just crazy. Also, quite discordant. Feels like a cheap pretendor. Maybe To tried some thing outlandish which is fine but it just didn't work.
]]>Solid Johnnie To film. A few stories mixed into a wonderful movie.
]]>This movie deals with grief sensitively. It just about scratches the surface, which is fine.
]]>Such a delightful early Tom Hanks movie. They don't make them like this any more.
]]>I liked the movie given that I like history and old things. The way the land was 'dug' to find history fascinates me. The two protagonists were pretty good as well. Carry Mulligan is withered and weary, much like the archival treasures she hopes to find. Apart from this, the film was very netflixy in approach. 100 minute, cute and doesn't go for roughtedges too much. It reminded me of the archiver's version of the cute 'King's Speech'.
]]>Timeless and iconic.
]]>Disturbing film which shows the abject lives people live in poverty and because of irresponsible parents (father in this case).
]]>Ida Lupino packs a punch. She sticks to the story and does not meander much. In a very real scenario where a person is falling out of one marriage and is deep into another relationship, this has all the depth and complexity you would want from such a movie.
]]>Underrated gem from the 90s. The world is so messed up with water every where. This is a post apocalyptic world with no frills like you see in many such movies. It is brutal, visceral and very real in it's approach.
]]>What a rugged, bad ass movie.
]]>Man versus nature.
]]>Gentle art house put it is like soda missing the fizz.
]]>Re-watched it after 24 years. I that I loved it in 1996. I loved it in 2020, too. Crisply edited, moves the plot along. What is not there not to like?
]]>What is there not to love about Borat? The guy shows the bigotry and biases of society so well.
]]>My first Eric Rohmer film. Why haven't I watched more yet? Great writing and dialogues. Delicate film making.
]]>Wonderful classic Fellini with all the imagery, all the Rota music and all the sizzle.
]]>Ecuadarian lives, Colombian adulthood. A family of five taking various paths..
]]>Sweet film about love and soul mates.. but the ending is quite cringy to say the least.
]]>Making pulp with low budget in the 80s and then trying to recreate pulp and nostalgia in 2020 are two different kettles of fish.
]]>I loved Chahine's eyes. Conveyed a history of torture the lame man must have gone through all his life.
]]>I haven't seen bollywood films show beautiful black and white chamber shots, long shots, and humans as humans. This is a hidden gem. Tanuja sparkles and has such screen presence. Sanjeev Kumar looks dapper too, which would be difficult to imagine if you had only watched his later escapades in tinsel town.
]]>Found it a bit too disted. I liked Nasiruddin Shah and Om Puri as the two cops playing dark Thomson and Thompsons.
]]>This is a time capsule of Bombay. It is about the migrant labour crisis. The shots are at eye level and so close that you feel that you are experiencing Bombay yourself. So many shots of faceless men exist throughout the movie. Such a large city of anguish.
]]>What is a family? What is moral and what isn't? This movie is slow paced and runs it it's own comfortable pace showing uncomfortable things about modern lives which we ignore far too often. This is the class divide movie without the frills of Parasite. What a tender poem on surviving.
]]>A man on his life long quest to fly. It shouldn't have been as heroic, soothing or incredible. However, it is. Herzog brings a sensitivity and calm which is therapeutic. He even dwells into the life of a local in Guyana who has no formal education but knows so much about medicinal herbs.... and into the legend surrounding the swifts and their nests behind the waterfalls. This movie is magical.
]]>Watched the Coppola Restoration with Francis For Coppola's audio commentary.
While it was frustrating to hear a million times how he was almost fired from the shooting of the movie, I liked how articulate Coppola is throughout the commentary. I wish he talked a lot more about the shots and recounted more anecdotes, but it was still an enjoyable commentary to watch the movie with.
]]>Difficult subject well handled. So many serial murderers have had disturbed childhoods.
]]>What a beautiful movie. Of old theaters, culture and how it gets destroyed by fucked up dictatorships. The same story every where.
]]>Not very impressive as a debut. However, I liked how so many street shots appear. The common themes of suspense and abstract are visible here which he explores much more later in his career.
]]>Among the Zhang Yimou films I have watched so far, this is the most touching. It shows how China struggles with it's poverty and education, and tries to keep flapping it's wings. Beautiful movie.
]]>A failure of epic proportions. Catalogue it under propaganda documentaries. Like all great books and documentaries, grey areas should be delved more deeply and more bravely. This documentary failed on both counts. On every topic, Michael Jordan NEEDS to have to last word. It was tiresome and boring.
]]>A short film about young love. A film by Truffaut will have great shots of Paris and it will be masterful in it's camera work and execution. This is no different.
]]>When I first watched Manorama Six Feet Under in 2007, I loved it. Over time, it has aged badly. The zing is gone. There are too many shots of fish in aquariums. Indian cinema has produced better films with dark themes like say Raman Raghav and Gangs of Wasseypur. Don't get me wrong, I love a noir. I wish this was better edited.
]]>The story of Hoffa is compelling. Sadly, the movie isn't. The last hour or so are quite captivating to be fair but it doesn't justify the two hours of build up.
]]>The plot moves on, the acting is quite good and the story keeps you interested all the way through.
]]>People doing and talking random things on a ship. Like potatoes without salt.
]]>The first 20 minutes or so were cool. It then became mundane and weird. It had no point! Or did it?
]]>Watched again after 25 years or so when they showed it in our school auditorium. Pulled out my copy of the old dvd. What is with the aspect ratio? Even on my 16:9 tv, it appeared small with a fair bit of black bars on the top and bottom.
I enjoyed watching this non stop action movie, but it got a bit too much as neither the action scenes were spectacular, nor was there any break between one sequence and another. Like a fish drowning in water and getting no air.
]]>Shyam Benegal is extremely true to his source material, in this case a book on Gandhi in South Africa. Rajit Kapur's mannerisms capture Gandhi very well. What this film lacks is the 'cinematic'. It is all done in a very boring way using extremely mundane camera processes and being so sincere to the subject that they want to include every tiny detail possibly.
]]>Bland.
]]>A timeless masterpiece. A film about youth, life, vulnerability and society.
]]>When people living in an old age home fear their mass killing, they make a run for it. This is a crazy road movie on foot.
]]>This review may contain spoilers.
I watched Vertigo 15 years back and didn't like it at all. I was hoping that I will change my view now as I love most Hitchcock movies, but no luck.
The movie reaches it's peak regarding the mystery half an hour before the actual movie ends. Then, there is this weird love angle played out and then the weird ending where the other woman also falls off the tower.
I don't mind that it has a slower pace as I quite enjoyed the production values and the technical prowess. The new restorations are beautiful.
]]>So much fun. Is it a bird? Is it a submarine? Matter? Anti-matter? Shoot the fucker down.
]]>I am sorry, I didn't understand this movie and it seemed tedious to me. I might read a bit about it later. Having said that, I am glad MUBI showed two of the three from the Poets trilogy. Maybe over time, I will be able to appreciate this movie.

]]>Will Keep Adding as I see films on the site crop up.
]]>Anurag Kashyap made Paanch, it got banned. Then he went on to make Black Friday, which was on the Mumbai Bomb Blasts, with real names of the gangsters involved.
2007-12 has seen an array of films, which are not mushy bollywood. It is the Indian New Wave. It is here, it is now.
I present 25 films which I think are worth the watch.
As we go forward, I am sure there will be more films which will stretch limits and expand horizons. Kashyap, Vishal Bharadwaj, Dibakar Banerjee and the ilk will remain pioneers though.
Meanwhile, Paanch has still now had a theatrical release in India. Almost 10 years on. What a 10 years it has been in the steps Indian Cinema has taken though.
