Dune: Part Two

2024

★★★★½

Had to sit on it for a couple hours too many but here are my rough thoughts:

It does a good job at representing cultural collision through the many factions in the film. The casting is done very cleverly seeing as most characters are undesirable bad people but the actors playing them have a strong screen presence and likability which makes it much easier to connect to the story when there is seemingly nobody to root for in a war of evil vs evil with innocents stuck as pawns in the middle of it all, military strategy concerned about nothing other than victory. Demonstrates propaganda disguised as prophecy and faith providing false promise to the impressionable. Pretty much everyone was great acting wise, Anya Taylor Joy had me geeking whenever she came on screen but Dave Bautista is still the show stealer here for me. The fight choreography was really incredible with fight scenes making some of the best and most memorable parts of the film. In general I liked the sense of humour it added since the first but I do think there were moments that it became overbearing/distracting so I think they could’ve just reeled that in a small bit. My most major gripe is the runtime didn’t leave room for it to take a breath or linger in a scene it wasn’t necessarily rushed I just found it jumped too quickly from scene to scene. All in all not a perfect movie but I wouldn’t call it overrated either, I understand the hype completely. The only word that can truly be used to describe Dune: part two is epic. I’m hoping to see it again in cinemas and have clearer thoughts on it.
