Some complaints hold up. The tone is all over the place, trying to reconcile a bright kid-friendly adventure with the authoritarian doom creeping in on the edges. The CGI elements aren't always well integrated; Lucas' imagination was still far ahead of the technology. But that imagination is what made me love Phantom Menace as a kid and keeps me loving it now. No one can agree on what EYES WIDE SHUT is actually about. This...thing cracks open so many potential reservoirs of meaning only to neatly deny them all, one by one, that it’s easy to come away thinking that’s the whole point. That message delivered primly to our hero through the gates of power is meant for us as well as him: “Give up your inquiries, which are completely useless.” There’s nothing to see here.
