Has a lot of that hokey Hong Kong comedy jazz that drags the focus away from Yeoh & Rothrock far too often. But hot damn, when this thing HITS! The final twenty minutes are such a fire of fists and feet, limb-breaking stunts, microfilm madness, and that over-the-top bad dude with his mocking little laugh eating shit in the most delicious fashion! It's easy to forget about the missteps when blazing so hard across the finish line.

I came *this close* to standing up and cheering when the credits finally rolled... alone in the darkness of my living room. Shit, if that ain't worth five stars, what is?

Nuclear annihilation and the grizzled grit of a dusty old detective novel, combined into a music video motif riding high off the 80s cheese excess. An eclectic mix, but man, it really jams! Phillip and Marlowe are just such a cool and corny duo. Aimlessly wandering the wastes with an innocent whimsy, smooth talking freaks 'n' geeks galore. Good action, high energy, a fun watch.

Major Fallout vibes as well. I always thought A Boy and His Dog was the games' biggest influence, but after seeing this... they're like one and the same. Kicking off with a shelter escape and getting thrown into a punk infused wasteland of mutant ghouls, cannibal clans, ginormous sewer rats, daddy drama, and even a high tech gal sporting her own lil Pip-Boy! The retro futuristic style and mood is uncanny. A vault dweller looking for a water chip would feel right at home in this post-apocalyptic dive.

The appetizing entrée to Macabre’s full course cannibal feast. The chainsaw dessert is to die for! Interesting to see how Dara is portrayed a bit differently here. A little more charming and personable, toying with her trio of prey before ripping the life straight outta them! Takes more of a comedic approach too which was completely gone in the feature film. Fun watch.

Slapping a generic title like Macabre on this is such a disservice. I dunno, when I think macabre my mind goes to Vincent Price lurking in shadow lit hallways, thunderstorms, ghosts ‘n’ ghouls and nasty devils in the graveyard. Not a family of cannibal freaks feasting on fresh blood, chainsawing heads, hacking limbs, plucking eyeballs, ripping, tearing, and turning their backwoods hell into a skating rink of gore! Macabre… sure, I guess.

Such a vicious ride! Starts off like an Indonesian Chainsaw Massacre homage, but relishes in the depravity and absolute fuckin’ relentlessness of the late 00s brand of extreme torture, wrapped up in a Countess Bathoryesque fable bathed in the blood of eternal youth. A real sinister performance from Shareefa Daanish as Mama Dara, bringing such a calm and intimidating presence while her minion offspring go wild on a group of unfortunates lured in by a good deed. No surprises storywise, just a shocking bout of suffering, flayed and filleted to the bone. The Mo Brothers do no wrong.

Formulaic to a fault. It’s not a terrible film or anything – the action moves at a good pace, the two leads are likable and have decent chemistry together, and there’s a few juicy kills along the way. Josh Ruben directs it well. It’s just the exact same thing as Christopher Landon’s previously written films; meticulously polished, completely lifeless, and at this point so conceptually dull. There’s no grit. No real viciousness. No surprises. The killer plays like a prop instead of a proper fleshed out freak with purpose, and the reveal just felt so uninteresting and half-baked. The rom-com stuff was fine, but yeah... who cares?

I dunno, I just think I’m over Landon’s style of poppy horror writing. I’ve watched four of his flicks, and this one's gonna be my last. It checks all the boxes. Nothing more, nothing less.

The final picture in Kaurismäki’s Proletariat Trilogy, and easily the most defeated and depressing of the bunch. No smiles. No happiness. No hope for the future. Just a bleak existence in a bleak world.

A factory girl whose life is spent making matches, with not a spark to be found. ing her deadbeat family while losing herself in the process. A harrowing performance from Kati Outinen, returning from Shadows in Paradise and being wrung through the working class wringer once again. She reminded me of Mary MacLaren from Lois Weber’s Shoes - bearing a million hardships with so little dialogue, going off pure emotion in a heartbreaking portrayal of a woman’s suffering and eventual break. The story structure and themes are so similar too, before twisting into a surprisingly cold-blooded finale. A cathartic last act for a world without justice, I suppose. The purging of suppressed resentment.

Aki Kaurismäki’s ability to create such interesting people, stories, and places from the dreary day-to-day realities of Finnish life is beyond compare. So glad I stumbled upon his work. Grey walls. The factory groan. Tomatoes on dry white bread. A gleaming jukebox playing songs of better days past. The heart of a depression era film, lost in the modern day.

A decent Hammerfied witch tale penned by the prolific Nigel Kneale. I adore the quaint little english village vibes that the bright ‘n’ cheery Joan Fontaine finds herself put upon. Full of secrets, rumors, forbidden pasts, and characters that all have something not quite right about ‘em.

The story is fine. A dry psychological slow burner that reminded me of a not quite so sinister Wicker Man. Totally predictable beats, mostly uneventful, but a cozy watch. Evil grandmas, murderous sheep, skin dancer fantasies, african witch doctors… it’s alright. The payoff at the end was good for a laugh too. Seeing the most british ass british folks trying their darndest to make their evil ritual orgy come true as they squeeze fruit on their faces and roll around in the dirt chanting their malevolent mantras. "A" for effort!

”Bury my heart at the dump”

Blue collar blues. Romance by circumstance. Kaurismäki makes the drudgery of shift by shift survival, living out of a suitcase, and being lost in a dreary world feel so dang authentic. Reminded me a lot of Goin’ Down the Road's harsh realities, but I suppose it's a tale as old as time. Escaping the frigid working class doldrums, and trying to make something out of nothing in the big city. The bright lights that twinkle from a million miles away, and burn you alive when you get too close. Gotta keep movin' on.

Somewhere over the rainbow never sounded so perfect.

Infinite loneliness, captured in 74 minutes of a working class nowhere, with working class nobodies, lost someplace in Finland. I think there were three smiles in the whole movie, but every single one felt so well earned. Fantastic chemistry between Nikander and Ilona, creating a romance that felt completely real instead of getting that inflated plastic puff of movie magic. A funny modern day twist on the Stepford Wives formula. I dunno, these dystopian ideas that used to seem so far flung back in the 20th century are looking less and less fuzzy as the years . This shit could happen! This shit will happen! This shit’s probably happening right NOW at some billionaire scumbag’s isolated retreat! The most unbelievable thing is a future where everybody uses those broken ass split screen smartphones… c’mon, let’s not get too crazy here.

The first act does a good job of creating that uncanny valley effect, even if the “twist” is as blatant as can be from the marketing alone, before eventually peeling away the facade and giving these bots some mischief to get into. Murder mischief! Mechanical mayhem! Has a lot of fun unexpected surprises throughout to keep things interesting, and the story wrapped up pretty smooth. Great performance from Sophie Thatcher, giving some heart to the role, while smooshing Asimov’s laws into the blender and setting it to purée! It’s a fun ride while it lasts.

Perfect background noise fluff. A random assortment of the fleshiest bits from a bunch of European zombie movies, haphazardly mashed together for gnarliest effect. Kind of like Terror in the Aisles without the pretense of trying to be informative, and without Donald Pleasence’s haunting mug dwelling in the darkness. Such a rad movie. SO creative with each and every killer setpiece, luring the unsuspecting marks into snake coffins, hungry hungry pig pits, voodoo trances, possessed chicken leg jujus, and so much more! Strung along by the Baron’s charm oozing golden grin, and oh man, the zombies look so gnarly! Crusty as hell. Decked out in chains and cobwebs, armed with machetes, piercing with their silvery orb eyes – they’re such an intimidating presence, even if they aren’t the brain eating variety I prefer. Exactly what I wanted from a Shaw Bros. knockoff of King Kong, and directed by the dude who did The Oily Maniac and the Black Magic movies – funneling that insanity into a fit of Monkey Madness! The ambition alone sure beats the hell outta that bloated ‘76 remake they were cashing-in on.

Right from minute one with that spectacular village crushing scene, before going into the jungle and becoming a whole other vicious beast... literally! So much chaos! Brutal elephant stampedes! Cheetahs fighting snakes! Quicksand drownings! Limbs mushed into bloody stumps! And that stunt man getting mauled by the tiger was WILD! Jesus, the balls on that guy. Greasy, slimy, slathered in a pungent ooze. Stalking the night, leaving his prey covered in a viscous mess, while constantly crying about his woman wanting woes. Please, the only Oily Maniac we recognize and respect in this house is Joe frickin’ Spinell!… but Hong Kong’s goopy monster is no slouch either!

It’s a really fun and goofy spirited film. Kind of like a grimier precursor to The Toxic Avenger’s superhero shenanigans, with the heart of a rubber suited 50s creature feature, and filtered through the Shaw Brothers brand of excess. A simple revenge plot that keeps plenty of victims flowing, with lots of neat transformations and visual effects, especially during that big brawl at the end. Slithering around like an oil slick on speed, bursting outta faucets, erupting out of barrels of bubbling liquids, and crushing the skulls of every dirtbag lawyer, criminal doctor, and lying sleazoid in his path! Another comfortably dull, cozy 50s sci-fi romp from Roger Corman. Mad science shenanigans for a make-up magnate desiring eternal youth to rejuvenate her company’s failing image. Fun premise, feels like a mix between The Fly, and strangely enough I kept thinking about The Substance once she started going overboard on her overdose. It’s like fifty minutes before the big reveal, so not a ton of action, but Susan Cabot plays the part well. All the characters have that enjoyable quirkiness typical of a Corman crew.

Another joyful film adaptation from Martin Rosen, ugh. Such a brutal duo of downers, though this one sure makes Watership Down look like a pleasant stroll through the park in comparison. Blasting it's bleak message like a shotgun load to the face… literally.

There was hope in Watership Down, hope is dead here. No masters, no sunshine, no island, no happy endings (despite what the original intention may be). Just a wasteland of mountainous crags awash in the blood of the lamb, as dark clouds linger ominously over two escaped pups – fresh from the ashes of the incinerator, and tossed into a wild world that doesn’t offer much better. The hand painted imagery stands stark and picturesque, and really draws you into their bitter realities, especially once the snow starts to fall. Snitter's PTSD delusions are the stuff of nightmares. Haunting animations. Inescapable sadness.

A moving story with a resounding animal rights message. Portraying the darkness these creatures go through with an unflinching hand, and a hell of a staggering impact.

Thankfully, I wasn’t traumatized by this as a kid as so many others seemed to have been, by parents thinking it’s just an innocent Disneyesque cartoon. Oh look, it has cute little BUNNIES! Little Johnny will love this! I grew up with my Milo & Otis VHS as a kid, and there’s nothing traumatizing about that one. Nope, nothing at all.

This was just as grim as its reputation. Mother nature paying the toll for humanity’s conquest, along with the rabbits own societal turmoil. The cruelty, the harsh realities, the ever present danger. Unflinchingly portrayed. Barbed wire existence in a field of blood. Constantly at odds with the picturesque watercolor storybook vibes – capturing the rolling pastoral countryside in all its allure, while shadowy figures lurk beneath the roots. Love that 70s animation aesthetic before everything became too standardized and clean. A beautifully told tale.

An 80s boners ‘n’ boobs comedy set in an arcade. Greydon Clark directing and still high off Wacko’s fumes, with big bad Joe Don Baker wanting to shut down the local t for corrupting the youth, while the teenage masses fight him every step of the way! Pranks! We need more PRANKS, pronto!

I dig it. It’s pretty much just Porky’s in a Pac-Man mold, with all of the sleazy/cheesy shenanigans you’d expect. I missed out on the height of the arcade blitz as a kid and watching this makes me super jealous. A Satan’s Hollow brawl with those big ol' sticks, hell yeah! There was a dingy old arcade at my local mall that lasted for like a year, but by the 90s, it was already a dead scene. I sunk wayyy too many quarters into Street Fighter II at Ace’s Pizza near my old school, and my theater had The Simpsons beat ‘em up and a big ass Off Road cab with the three wheels. So not all bad I suppose.

None of the vibes though. This flick makes the scene POP with nostalgia for a time missed. The colors, the lights, the quirky characters, the danger, and the deafening drone of alien death vibrating off every . The stink! Getting 90 minutes to soak in that atmosphere - gloriously inflated as it may be, is a joy to watch. All problems in life should be solved by a high score showdown… and strip PJ parties afterwards!

Oh boy, an unofficial sequel to Streets of Fire! Better watch that right away, cause I hate myself I guess? Directed by Albert Pyun! With Michael Pare and Deborah Van Valkenburgh reprising their roles from the first! How could this possibly go wrong! Oh, right... the everything.

Truly awful. 90% of this takes place in front of the same piss tinted desert green screen with two edgy My Space vixens and their jeep. Cody’s now some jaded CIA hitman walking the road of literal purgatory, when he meets the two ladies fresh off their killing spree – one is Raven’s daughter (I think?) - and they drone on and on and ON in dull fan fiction laced monologues of cringe. Also, Cody’s got a daughter with Ellen Aim from the first flick, but she’s got daddy abandonment issues and it makes him sad? Concert time! Yay, happy ending? I don’t fuckin’ know. Shit sucks.

Should’ve turned this off in the first five minutes. I know better, I deserve better(?), this thing reeks of Wicker Tree levels of what the fuck are we even doing here? Thanks Letterboxd for adding that related films thingy on the movie page! You owe me 84 minutes 💀

Damn, what a surprise! Walter Hill embodying the spirit of a slicked back 50s riffraff tale, and injecting it into the neon scarred, lookin’ like it’s fresh outta the apocalypse 1980s. A rock ‘n’ roll fable indeed. I was PUMPED off that mesmerizing intro alone, and that energy keeps on pounding 90 minutes later. Such a jam!

I know there’s a few flicks in between, and I loved 48 Hrs, but this totally feels like the natural follow up to The Warriors that I didn’t know I needed. The world, the attitude, the glow-up excess of the gutter. Takes the same “one bad night” plot and crawls across the rain drenched alleys and gang-ridden streets to get a kidnapped singer back home. All style, all mood, a warp back in time blitzed in glamour and glitz. Has the heart of a theater play, yet the bombast of a rollicking action banger.

Looks phenomenal, flows like a dream, and radiates cool across every frame. Great cast too. Seeing Rick Moranis in anything just makes me feel like a kid again. Amy Madigan spits hardened grit on line after line, and everything is better when Willem Dafoe is involved… especially waltzing outta the flames in his slick leather daddy overalls! But it’s Ry Cooder’s beats that really put the soul into this entire escapade. Slide guitar and saxophones a-jammin’, keeping the smooth jukebox groove a-flowin’ from one scene to the next. And HOLY SHIT, The Blasters! Talk about a band that was literally MADE to be in this movie. Two songs just ain’t enough, but they had to go and burn the damn house down!

Man, the first half of this where it’s more or less a solo Bruce Campbell t, going on a slapstickin’, backflippin’, hand choppin’, chainsawin’, jaw crackin’ war against himself… it’s the elegance of Buster Keaton laced with the Stooges brand of buffoonery on high, and shot out of a Looney Tunes cannon. Engulfing the edge of insanity while the cabin turns into a delirious maelstrom of brain befuddling nonsense - a roaring waltz with the denizens of the book of the dead. Just a legendary performance all around. Groovy, if you will...

And of course, the rest of the movie ain’t too shabby either. Top notch camera effects, killer stop motion and undead designs, a sick sense of humor, and an entire rainbow’s worth of bloody goop blasted from the devilish depths. A riot every time. I watched this with my niece and she was SO confused with the time warp shenanigans during the end. Safe to say an Army of Darkness rewatch awaits sometime soon!

The Iceman cometh to San Francisco! You know it’s scuzzy sequel time when the big baddie is some shady drug lord named The Iceman, and he’s got his trio of biker scum set loose upon the city to get revenge for some stolen money from... 48 Hrs ago.

A messier plot for sure, less memorable side characters, and all the main beats are just rehashes from the first film, but man, it’s still such a raucous ride. Motocross shootouts, blasting bikes through filthy porn theaters, and that beautiful bird cage finale shrouded in dense neon fog! Any excuse to get Cates and Hammond back together is alright by me. They’re the fire and ice oozing warm puddles out of so many fresh bullet wounds. Eddie’s a way more confident actor after eight years and a hell of a lot of success, with that glistening $7 million dollar smile, and Nick Nolte sure knows how to “act” up the hammered cop role like a pro. Love watching them do their stuff.

The buddy cop flick that every movie after tried to imitate, but few could ever duplicate. Perfect dynamics between the two, with Nolte’s grumpy half-lit swagger and no shits left to give attitude, clashing head-on with Murphy’s motor-mouth full of verbal fire who just wants to be given a straight chance. Running hot up and down the seedy streets of San Fran in their beat-up blue sky caddy, tracking down some old friends who're leaving a trail of bullet ridden bodies in their wake.

Combining comedy and gritty action with such a steady balance. Never letting either side take full control. You get some absolutely vicious shootout scenes and killer setpieces like that bus ride from hell (that ended WAY too soon!), along with Eddie ripping through some redneck bar with his best hillbilly beatdown routine! It’s a high energy banger on all counts.

Raw testosterone oozing out of every frame in this modern day western by Walter Hill. Nick Nolte’s Texas Ranger faces off against a childhood chum who went across the river and found himself a drug cartel to lead. Loyalties and lovers lost somewhere in between, for everyone involved. Mix in an ex-military led bank heist with the likes of Michael Ironside, Clancy Brown, and William Forsythe and it makes for one explosive concoction!

Dirty and dusty. Lies upon lies, bodies upon bodies – no one gets out clean. The heist steals the show in the first half from Nolte’s cop drama, but once things get south of the border it all comes together into a vicious showdown that pays homage to The Wild Bunch in one spectacular bloody blow-up. The whole movie just builds the tension so well, the characters are killer, and there’s a hardened grit to every sweltering sun baked scene. Fantastic film.

The budget was $70,000 for this flick, but I have a sneaking suspicion that some zeros were missing by the time the cash made it to the prop department. Two, maybe three? Cause man, that was one JANKY ass looking crab monster! Roger Corman spared no expense… on tissue paper, pipe cleaners, strings, and cardboard claws!

Charming as hell though. The whole movie really. Just a bunch of scientists trapped on an island with a telepathic, earthquake inducing, goofy crab causing mayhem! Corman said in interviews that he wanted every single scene to have at least one shot of horror or suspense, and he kind of pulled it off, as long as you can suspend reality and get into the drive-in terror vibe of it all. Moves at a good pace, the island crumbling away adds a nice touch of time crunch, and ends on a real bombastic finale too. Enjoyable schlock.

A rumination on life and death in disguise as a mobster road movie. A stoolie in hiding for ten years is being delivered to Paris to pay for his past deeds, with his two executioners and their unexpected hostage playing escort through the beautifully desolate Spanish countryside. Five engers in total; four in the realm of the living, with Death riding right alongside.

It’s a pretty low-key flick. Has its share of violent fits, sure, but the dialogue and mood is where this really cuts sharp as a knife. The dull moments that linger uncomfortably long. The expected unexpected. A tense and uneasy journey, despite the light-hearted nature at odds with the inevitability of it all. Ain’t that life? Terence Stamp is fantastic, such an enigmatic figure who accepts his fate and just wants to enjoy the ride. John Hurt and Tim Roth play well off each others idiosyncracies – the young and the old, the fresh and the tired. Roth coming in hot off of Made in Britain and still burning with the fire. Two sides of the same bloody coin. And while Laura del Sol doesn’t quite have as much time to shine, she’s the one light of innocence in this band of limey misfits.

Glad I gave Stephen Frears another chance after HATING Mary Reilly years back and writing him off completely. This was quite the surprise from the typical gangster beats I was expecting.

Wildly impressive. A joyride of selfish indulgence, making a mockery of the patriarchy, of stereotypical gender norms, and spitting in the face of the the established class disparity that’s grown more crooked with each ing year. And even more impressive that this was made under the cloud of Soviet oppression in 1966! I mean, god forbid you show a couple of women having a good time, having a laugh at the expense of bougie decadence. Perish the thought.

Stylistically, if you told me this was created by some quirky indie studio from like 2015, I’d believe it. So ahead of the times, ahead of the trends, ahead of the attitudes and the fashions to come. Visually experimental, artistically aplomb, and completely untethered by the standards of "proper" filmmaking, creating a pastiche of vignettes that gel into a beautifully kaleidoscopic journey.

Spoil yourself. Spoil the balance. It's all just pretend.

This is why you don’t let buyers come to your house, and then he tries to haggle on the price! But the haggling gets oh so much worse...

Part home invasion flick, heavy giallo influence, tense with psychological drama, and a deceptive little gaslighting adventure every step of the way. Quite the surprise, with some interesting twists despite getting off to a bit of a slow start. Really makes good use of the single apartment setting to create a claustrophobic environment, and having just the four characters gives plenty of time to flesh out their motives and true personas. The credits say this was adapted off a play, and it definitely feels like it. Not bad.

Paul Schrader does his version of The Searchers, but instead of horses, cowboys, and the wide open plains we’ve got seedy sex ts, Jism Jim, and an underworld a-glow in the neon slime! There’s just something so endlessly amusing about watching George C. Scott’s small town religious idealism get shattered as he bumbles from booth to brothel in search for his once puritan daughter. The sights, the sounds, the energy of the streets. This atmosphere is alive.

Was this supposed to be so funny though? The tone never really gets nailed down, because who the hell isn’t gonna laugh when Scott slaps on a fake mustache and interviews Big Dick Blaque while trying to worm his way around as a porn director. He’s a fine actor, but I just couldn't take him seriously here. The stakes never felt real, even once things got into the nastier snuff action. The ending was a bummer as well. Felt like a total cop out… which it was because studio interference decided a film named HARDCORE just needed a happy ending. I think Schrader’s original idea made more sense in a world where life is shown to be so unfair. A bit more Chinatown, y'know? You're in over your head, get out while you still can.

Lots of faults, but still one hell of an entertaining mess to watch.

Kind of an unnecessary sequel, especially considering how perfect the last film wrapped up, but it’s also an unnecessary sequel starring Meiko Kaji with Sonny Chiba as her sidekick… so yeah, I’m game! Causing trouble once again on the rain spattered, neon-lit Tokyo side streets, trying to find the man who killed her father. I’m not sure how Nami got out of prison after murdering a whole den of Yakuza in the last flick? This film doesn’t really acknowledge the first in any meaningful way, just more sword flailing, card sharking, dirty deeds, and plenty of seedy gangster thugs getting what they deserve. That’s alright by me.

There’s nothing cooler than a battered ‘n’ bruised Sonny Chiba - trenchcoat draped over his shoulders, bandaged ribs, a sword in one hand, with violent anger seared across his face, cutting ‘em down by the dozens!

Meiko Kaji as an ex-biker pool shark fresh out of the t for murder, trying to go straight in Tokyo’s seedy underbelly of crooked Yakuza suits ‘n’ ties. That’s enough to sell me, but putting Kazuhiko Yamaguchi in the director’s chair, even better! The Wolf Guy guy! The dreamer behind the Haunted Turkish Bathhouse! Hell yeah, sign me up!

There’s a mellower tone here than with Kaji’s usual pulpy affairs. She’s much more personable and human, a comionate character displaying her wider range of acting abilities. More than just the personification of REVENGE! Sheathing a pool cue instead of a blade. The biggest showpiece is a super tense high stakes game of pool jiving hard off The Hustler’s vibes, and while everything crumbles into a gloriously vicious final ten minutes, I wouldn’t of been disappointed if it didn’t… not that I’m complaining or anything!

That whip decapitation was downright nasty! Action packed, amazing fight choreography – especially in that lengthy final brawl – and a tension that had me dangling on edge. The clanging of swords echoes such a beautiful melody in the dead of winter’s night.

Snowy Slashings! Merry Massacres!! Holiday HELL!!!

Winter has always been my favorite horror movie watching time of year... yes, even more than Halloween! So to make it easier to pin down my seasonal watches, I scraped together as many terror-filled treats as I could find scattered across the web.

As long as the movie has at least one prominent snowy scene, a chilly vibe overall, a dude in a Santa suit goin' nuts with an axe, or even just some random Christmas decorations tossed about, whatever. If it fits the spirit of the season, I'll add it.
All recommendations welcome!

🎁Happy Holidays!🎁

Might as well sort these while they're still fresh on the mind. So far Colpo Gobbo All'italiana, Operation San Pietro, and The Maniacs would be the only noteworthy films I'd recommend from his early comedy days, with the rest being curiosities for sick-minded completionists like myself. Two Escape From Sing Sing is probably the best of the Franco & Ciccio led nonsense... for whatever that's worth.

City is an unstoppable force of dread and will always be my #1. Four of the Apocalypse jumped way up on rewatch as it's sparse scorched plains insanity finally wormed itself into my brain. Such an amazingly ambitious film. Cat in the Brain and The Black Cat, while both heavily flawed, I find endlessly entertaining and will make sure they stay in the top 10 no matter what.

*Every film watched/rewatched and ranked between January 1, 2024 - August 11, 2024*

Included is everything he's directed, written, starred in, or produced, including any documentaries based around his life & work.

I finally picked up a copy of Stephen Thrower's Beyond Terror over the holidays, and now I've got the urge to watch everything that has any kind of Lucio Fulci association, and try to finish and write something for each of 'em before 2024 is up. New year, gotta have some kind of movie goal I suppose, and I've been wanting to do a deep dive into Fulci's work for a while anyways. So why not?

Seems like most of the early stuff and the Franco/Ciccio comedies have limited or no english releases, but since they look to be more simple/slapstick-y kind of films, I'm hoping I can flub my way through following along with the italian subs.

  1. The Dream of Icarus
  2. Pittori di provincia (I Macchiaioli)
  3. I Giovani e il Lavoro
  4. The Thieves

😻Daily Horror Hunt #57 (March 2023)😻 5q3h2u https://letterboxd.sitesdebloques.org/ponbac/list/daily-horror-hunt-57-march-2023/ letterboxd-list-31089746 Mon, 6 Feb 2023 05:00:10 +1300 <![CDATA[

Love the idea of a scavenger hunt by March's host Robert, so I'm in! Lots of fun figuring out ways to piece everything together while still including tons of stuff I want/need to watch.

I wrote in the notes how all my films and categories connect. Finding something else that had 28 letters in the title... took a little longer than I was expecting. Damn you Successive Slidings of Pleasure 😯

  1. Corruption

    1. Your first pick will be decided by the whims of my co-host! In this video my co-host has been presented with a selection of famed old school horror actors, 8 in total! He methodically goes through each of the names, eliminating a total of 7 names from the board until only the 8 and final name is left. The final name left on the board by my co-host is also the name of the actor that must star in your film of choice for the #1 spot of this horror hunt. In case any of you can't access the video for some reason or another, I've also written out the name of my co-host's choice in the written note under my own #1 choice!

    (Peter Cushing!)

  2. The Invisible Man Appears

    2. Your second film depends on our last month's host.

**If your pick for #1 has either been logged by Michelle 🎄📚 MichelleBookAddict OR is in her watchlist then you must watch a horror film from before 1950. **

If Michelle hasn't logged it nor plans to (according to her watchlist), then you must watch a horror film from after 1950.

  3. Sick

    3. Now count the total amount of characters (letters and numbers) in the title of your pick for #2 and watch a horror film from a year that contains that number. Let's say your #2 has a total of 9 characters in its title, then for example you could watch a film from 1962, 2009 or even 1890!

    (22 letters for 2022)

  4. Killer Nun

    4. Now look at the poster for your #3. Pick a horror film that shares a predominant color on the poster with your #3 .

    (red poster)

  5. No One Heard the Scream

    5. What country is your #4 from? Whatever it is, watch a horror film that comes from the same continent (but NOT the same country!!) as your #4 pick!

(same continent as #4 italy - spain)

  6. The Cannibal Man

    6. Now I want you to watch a horror film that stars an actor/actress from your #5.

    (Vicente Parra)

  7. The Embryo Hunts in Secret

    7. Now watch a horror film that shares any non-horror genre tag with your #6.

    (shares drama tag)

  8. The Gruesome Twosome

    8. What's the runtime of your #7? Watch a horror film with the same runtime as your #7.

    (72 minutes)

  9. Something Weird

    9. Now watch any other horror film from the director of your #8.

    (H.G. Lewis)

  10. Tokyo Gore Police

    10. Does the poster for your #9 show any trace of a human being? If it does, watch a horror film that I've rated 4 stars or higher. If it doesn't, watch a horror that I've rated 1.5 stars or lower.

    (4 stars or higher)

'Tis the season for some festive Ho-Ho-Horror Hunt watches! Thanks to BeanBagsFlicks for coming up with some killer prompts, I only had to re-roll one to keep up the holiday theme.

Merry Christmas! 🎅🎄🎁

  1. Abominable

    1. Thank you Johncon for hosting last months hunt! Watch any horror film that they logged in 2021.

  2. Once Upon a Time at Christmas

    2. The weather is starting to get colder (at least where I live). One of my favorite cold weather horror films is John Carpenter's The Thing. Watch a horror film where a character is an imposter.

  3. The Thing

    3. Speaking of John Carpenter, he is my most watched director on Letterboxd. Watch a John Carpenter horror film.

  4. Ice Sharks

    4. Two of my favorite franchises are Gamera and Godzilla, so watch a giant monster/kaiju film.

  5. Krampus: The Christmas Devil

    5. On the subject of franchises, I love all the long running horror ones. Watch any film from a horror franchise that has 5 or more films.

Another lazy, rainy, self-isolating day stuck in the house, might as well rank something... 🤷‍♂️📜

  1. The Thing
  2. Suspiria
  3. Maniac
  4. Evil Dead II
  5. The Fly
  6. The Invisible Man
  7. Shin Godzilla

Galactic D's Original List

  • We're Going to Eat You

    1. Thank you to Stephanie🖤 for hosting May's hunt. To thank Stephanie we could assist her by watching one of the 700 plus movies on her horror watchlist. A review for Stephanie🖤 would also help her to decide whether to watch or remove the film from her list and not bother.

  • Byleth: The Demon of Incest

  • The Pyjama Girl Case

    3. Watch a horror film set in Australia or New Zealand.

I'm finally getting through two franchises (Basket Case/Blind Dead) that I've been meaning to finish for SO long, but keep putting off for one reason or another. Can't wait to dig into 'em all!

And major props to May's host, Stephanie for providing all the great prompts!

  • The Screaming Skull

    1. Don't let me hog the spotlight, watch a movie with it's own host! (My favorite is Joe Bob Briggs, but there is a lot of Elvira, MST3K, & RiffTrax free on Tubi)

  • The Ghost Galleon

    2. Let's thank Robert for hosting April by picking something from his 200+ Favorite Horror Films list. (Free space for Robert)

  • FleshEater

    3. We are about halfway to Halloween and it happens to be my favorite holiday. Watch a movie that takes place on or around Halloween.

  • DEFCON-4

    4. May the Fourth Be With You! Ya, I'm one of those Star Wars people. Watch a horror that takes place (at least partially) in space.

  • Grave Robbers

    5. Today is Cinco de Mayo. Watch a horror movie from Mexico.

  • Heavy Metal Massacre

    6. Movies are an important part of my life, but so is music! Watch a horror movie about music or a musical. A movie with an amazing soundtrack would be acceptable as well.

  • The Mortuary Collection

    10. I really can't get enough horror these days, so let's cram multiple horror stories into one movie. Watch a horror anthology.

Another month, another Horror Hunt - Props to Robert Berlin for doing the hosting once again, should be a fun one!

  • Tabloid!

    1. April Fools! Haha got ya! Watch something funny, watch a horror comedy.

  • Malatesta’s Carnival of Blood

    2. Dan hosted the last horror hunt. We shall thank him by meeting him right in the middle. Watch a horror film that Dan has rated exactly 2.5 stars (Dan might use this one as a free space if he wants).

  • Swallow

    3. I like Easter, mostly because of the food and candy. Watch a horror film that deals with food or eating.

  • Black Roses

    4. Hey look at me I’m Canadian! Oh no, my Tim Hortons® donut just got eaten by a moose! I must calm down and go watch the hotly anticipated ice hockey game between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the.. *checks note* Calgary Flames! Watch a Canadian horror film while you’re at it, eh?

  • Night Train to Terror

    5. Now some of our paths will split for a little while. If you are left-handed you must watch a horror film that I’ve rated 4.5 stars or higher. If you’re right-handed you must watch a horror film that I’ve rated 1 star or lower. Need a hand?

  • Combat Shock

    6. I was born in 1994, not the best year for horror films in my opinion. That’s why I want you to watch a horror film from your own birth year instead (If you are also cursed with the year of 1994 then this is a free space).

  • Black Cat Mansion

    7. These are my cats! They are easily recognized by their gracious black and white coatings. Honor their existence by watching a black and white horror film (preferably one with cats in it, cuz representation matters).

  • Inland Empire

    8. In 1990 on April 8, Twin Peaks premiered. You should watch a horror/thriller film directed by David Lynch to celebrate this! (Let's be honest, a lot of Lynch's work can arguably be considered horror so genre definitions are pretty useless here in my opinon).

  • Sleepaway Camp II: Unhappy Campers

    9. Sometimes it is important to check in on our favorites to see if they are still doing well. Rewatch a horror film that you’ve rated 5 stars in the past to see if it still holds up.

  • 12 Hour Shift

    10. Today is the day of Wrestlemania 37! Watch a horror film starring a pro-wrestler! A helpful list with some examples

It took me a few days, but I finally figured out a list I could be happy with! Props to Dan for coming up with such a fun 'n' challenging little switch-up for March. This was a blast 👍

  • Stage Fright

    1. To start things off, let's thank Matt Winfield for hosting February's hunt by watching something that Matt has rated 4 stars exactly. He's a generous rater so you should have plenty of awesome options!

  • The Great Alligator

    2. Pick something written by one of the writers of film #1. (George Eastman)

  • The Unseen

    3. Pick the first actor listed on LB for film #2. Watch another horror film they have worked on. If that actor does not have any other horror films, or you've seen them all, try with the second listed actor and so forth. (Barbara Bach)

  • Nightmares Come at Night

    4. Subtract 10 from the year of release of film #3 and choose something released that year. (1970)

  • Paranoia

    5. Most films have more than one genre tag on LB, so choose one of the other tags of film #4 and watch something that shares that tag, as well as horror. If your selection was only horror, pick something also tagged with sci-fi. (Thriller)

  • Spasmo

    6. Something by the same director from #5. (Umberto Lenzi)

  • Death Nurse

    7. I found #6 available streaming on Tubi. Choose something to watch using the same method as the previous film, whether that is streaming on Tubi or a different platform, own it, borrow from the library, etc. (YT)

  • The Devil's Nightmare

    8. Same predominant color on the cover as #7. (Red)

  • The Iguana with the Tongue of Fire

    9. Released in the same country as #8. Any country it is tagged with is fine. (Italy)

  • To the Devil a Daughter

    10. Pick a studio attached to #9 and watch another horror film they made. (Terra-Filmkunst)

Despite 2020 being a real garbage heap of a year, it ended up being one of the best I've had for new movie discoveries. So YAY for that! Finally finished all the mainline Jean Rollin flicks I wanted to see. Caught up on some late era Fulci and Argento. Dug into a lot of the Cat. III, Hong Kong/Shaw Bros stuff. Still going on a deep dive into the SOV rabbit hole (picked up a copy of Analog Nightmares for xmas and now I HAVE to see EVERYTHING in the book). And I ticked off so much awesome stuff that had been festering on my watchlist for years! (and ended up adding so much more back on...)

Looking back, there's a lot I scored wayyy too high, a lot I can't even watching, and plenty of real underrated trashterpieces that were a feast to my eyes - but I feel these twenty movies sum up my year of film pretty well. The Lighthouse is just SO DAMN GOOD!

Another year down, here's to an awesome 2021!!! 🍻

  1. The Lighthouse
  2. Ogroff
  3. Hagazussa
  4. Demons
  5. Blood Beat
  6. The Blackcoat's Daughter
  7. The Untold Story
  8. Bliss
  9. Perfect Blue
  10. Possessor

I decided to make my Horror Hunt for December a bit more... festive this year. Winter/Xmas movies ONLY. Had to bend two or three clues to fit to the holiday theme, but hey, it's done!

Merry Christmas!! 🎅⛄🎄🎁

(And if anyone knows any winter themed video game based movies let me know. I couldn't find a fit for #11, so I lazily slapped Silent Hill on there instead, I dunno.)

  • Jack Frost 2: The Revenge of the Mutant Killer Snowman

    1. It’s cold outside these days. So do yourself a favour and watch a horror film set in a warm location. It could be a desert, a jungle, a volcano or whatever. I leave the choice to
    you.

  • Hypothermia

    2. Sharks get a bad rep in horror and that just seems unfair to me. Watch a horror film about an aquatic animal that is NOT a shark!

  • Jack Frost

    3. Kelsey Frederick hosted the last horror hunt. We shall thank her by going through her horror garbage! Watch a horror film that Kelsey has rated 1 and a half stars or less! (Kelsey herself can use this one as a free space, so go watch some horror film that you may actually like!)

  • Holiday Hell

    4. Actor spotlight! Watch a horror film starring Jeffrey Combs!

  • Feeders 2: Slay Bells

    5. Cross the border! Watch a horror film from a neighboring country of yours. (If you live in Iceland or some equally ridiculous place without any bordering countries, then just watch a Swedish horror film because I said so)

  • Black Santa's Revenge

    6. You look like you’re in a hurry, let me help you out! Watch the shortest horror film on your watchlist!

  • Pooka!

    7. I am a robot! I am here to take American jobs! Watch a horror film featuring a robot, cyborg or other type of mechanical menace.

  • The Weather Station

    8. This is OUR horror hunt, comrade! Watch a horror film from Russia!

  • Snowbeast

    9. I’m in the mood for some public domain horror! Watch a horror film from Mill Creek Entertainment.

  • Dial Code Santa Claus

    10. Won’t somebody please think of the children?! Watch a horror film with a child protagonist!

Props to Kelsey for creating such a fun challenge with a bit of trivia this month, love it! I actually did surprisingly better than expected. Yay useless horror knowledge! 😈

(And I finally fit all the Phantasm flicks into one of these hunts, woo!)

I'm going to be watching horror movies all year anyways, might as well make it more interesting. I tried to mostly put movies I've owned for years, yet still haven't watched. This should cut a decent chunk outta my library. No rewatches for me!

👋 So long summer, time to make way for the spookiest of seasons. My favorite time of year! Happy Halloween y'all!! 🎃

Dan's Masterlist for October is HERE

  • Edge of the Axe

    1. Regretfully, I have not always completed the monthly scavenger hunts. Watch something from my failures list. Bonus points if it is something you also failed at in a previous challenge. Feel free to give me a recommendation on that list for anything actually worth my time (not that I really have standards).

  • I Spit on Your Grave

    2. Robin hosted September and did a fabulous job. Pick something she has rated 4+.

  • Black Magic

    3. In getting with the season, find something featuring skeletons on the LB poster.

  • Hell House LLC II: The Abaddon Hotel

    4. Something with a city or country in the title.

  • C.H.U.D.

    5. October 5th is Amazon Prime day. Watch something they have streaming for free. Not required to use their service though, if you don't subscribe to them. If you don't subscribe and it won't tell you what is free or not, feel free to use this list of films I've watched on Amazon Prime myself.

  • Jenifer

    6. cherryz did a Masters of Horror selection earlier this year and she's pretty awesome - let's pick another!

  • Splatter Farm

    7. I hosted the June hunt and like a complete jerk, I didn't give credit to the wonderful efforts of EmperorCupcake's May hunt. She finds some ridiculously obscure but fun films to watch, and her reviews are always entertaining, so let's watch something obscure that she's seen. Has to be on page 10 or lower. Free choice for EmperorCupcake unless you want a rewatch!

  • The Cat Creature

    8. Something with the word "creature" in the title.

  • Blade

    9. Horror (or thriller) featuring the talents of Stephen Dorff.

  • Spontaneous Combustion

    10. Title with a word that is at least 10 letters long.

Props to Robin🎃 for hosting this month, love the clues!

  • Coherence

    1. Watch a movie on the letterboxd list 2010s top horror films I hope you guys haven't seen them all 😬 also the comments on that list is pretty heated

  • She Dies Tomorrow

    2. Go to the watchlist of the last person who followed you and watch the last horror they added that you haven't watched and if you don't succeed try again with the next person and if you still don't succeed take last film you added to your watchlist

  • The Rental

    3. Watch your friends favourite movie or ask for a recommendation (if you don't have friends, cry)

  • M.O.M. Mothers of Monsters

    4. Watch a movie where the antagonist wears a mask

  • Day of the Dead: Bloodline

    5. I love watching shitty movies, so pick a movie from the lowest rated page here

  • The Pied Piper

    6. I have two gerbils, watch a horror with a rodent in it

  • Sleepwalkers

    7. Stephen King has been involved with a lot of movies, you should go watch one

  • I Stand Alone

    8. Red is often d with evil and horror, so lets watch a movie with a red poster

  • 47 Meters Down

    9. Are you afraid of sharks? Watch a shark movie and find out

  • Julia's Eyes

    10. I'm autistic! Lets watch a horror with character that has a disability

Some tricky clues this month, thanks to our host Matfield for throwing it all together!

  • Satan's Rhapsody

[1] Watch the horror movie on your watchlist with the earliest release date.

  • The Seventh Curse

[2] Watch a horror movie written or directed by a person of color.

  • Becky

[3] Watch a horror movie that features a comedian.

  • O-Bi, O-Ba: The End of Civilization

[4] Watch a horror movie you know nothing about, based solely on your liking of the poster/cover art.

  • Dead Birds

[5] Watch a movie from the year you graduated, will graduate, or would've graduated from high school.

  • Murder-Rock: Dancing Death

[6] Watch a movie that's title begins with the first letter of your first name.

  • November

[7] Watch something based on real-world folklore or legend.

  • Dawn of the Mummy

[8] Under represented in horror: Watch a movie from the Middle East or Africa.

  • Graveyard Shift

[9] August 9th is National Book Lover's Day so instead of reading, watch a horror film based on a novel.

  • Rats: Night of Terror

[10] Watch a sequel that's a dolled-up sequel or sequel in name only.
