The best current film about Trump's America: In his video introduction, filmmaker Eli Craig described his new film "Clown in a Cornfield" as a documentary about contemporary America. It's fitting: A horror clown is at war with the next generation, an obvious Elon Musk lookalike salutes the clown, and the rule of law is undermined by antagonistic forces. What initially sounds absurd works wonderfully: "Clown in a Cornfield" is an intelligent film and a lot of fun. But anyone expecting a scary shocker will be disappointed. There's nothing creepy or mysterious here, and the actual twist is already guessed from the very beginning. Instead, the film offers slapstick horror and splatter fun à la "Scream," makes ample use of backwoods horror tropes, and does it all so entertainingly and humorously that I laughed out loud several times. Political criticism is packaged here in a way that's as mainstream-friendly as possible. And that's what makes it special. I hope the next films come soon. Art imitates and sometimes anticipates reality; the horror clown is not fiction, he only sometimes wears a different makeup than expected.

Der beste aktuelle Film über das Trump-Amerika: In seinem Video-Grußwort bezeichnete der Filmemacher Eli Craig seinen neuen Film “Clown in a Cornfield” als eine Dokumentation über das aktuelle Amerika. Das t: Ein Horror-Clown befindet sich im Krieg mit der jungen Generation, ein offensichtlicher Elon Musk-Verschnitt salutiert vor dem Clown und der Rechtsstaat wird von antagonistischen Kräften ausgehebelt. Was zunächst abwegig klingt, geht wunderbar auf: „Clown in a Cornfield“ ist ein intelligenter Film und macht enorm viel Spaß. Doch wer einen gruseligen Schocker erwartet, wird enttäuscht. Hier ist nichts gruselig oder geheimnisvoll, und der eigentliche Twist ist bereits zu Anfang zu erahnen. Vielmehr bietet der Film Slapstick-Horror und Splatter-Fun à la “Scream”, bedient sich reichlich an den Tropes des Backwood-Horrors und macht das alles so unterhaltsam und humorvoll, dass ich mehrmals laut lachen musste. Politische Kritik wird hier maximal Mainstream-tauglich verpackt. Und das macht ihn besonders. Ich hoffe, dass die nächsten Filme bald kommen. Kunst imitiert und manchmal antizipiert sie die Realität; der Horror Clown ist keine Fiktion, nur trägt er manchmal ein anderes Makeup, als erwartet.

The new Besson: "June and John" aims to be many things, to break with the clichés of the dream factory, but ultimately ends up to be loaded with clichés. The fast pace, the rapid editing, and the staging conceal the fact that there is actually no conflict in this story. Rather, the film simulates a plot – through asserted emotions and situations that are strung together. All that carries the film are the performances of the actors, who seem natural and carefree in their acting. For anyone who can engage with the two protagonists and the film's style, the film will surprisingly quickly. However, the film remains superficial, and for those who don't find the surface appealing, the entire construct will collapse.

Der neue Besson: “June and John” will vieles sein, mit den Klischees der Traumfabrik brechen und strandet letztlich als Klischee-beladenes Abziehbild einer Amour Fou. Das hohe Tempo, die rasante Montage und Inszenierung kaschieren, dass es in dieser Geschichte eigentlich keine Konflikte gibt. Vielmehr simuliert der Film eine Handlung - über Emotionen, die behauptet, und Situationen, die aneinandergereiht werden. Alles, was den Film trägt, sind die Performances der Darsteller, die in ihrem Spiel natürlich und unbeschwert wirken. Für alle, die sich auf die beiden Protagonisten und die Stilistik des Films einlassen können, wird der Film überraschend schnell vergehen. Jedoch bleibt der Film oberflächlich und für jene, für die die Oberfläche nicht funktioniert, wird das gesamte Konstrukt in sich zusammenfallen.

Social housing noir meets haunted house: Motifs familiar from Polanski's "The Tenant" or from J-horror classics like Korusawa's "Pulse" or Nakata's "Ringu" find a new form in "Noise." With an incredibly dense atmosphere, impressive sound design (the acoustics and sound system at the Zoopalast are simply ideal for this), and powerful images that linger in the memory, the film ratchets up the tension level from creepy to scary at a rapid pace. The setting, a high-rise housing project, works wonderfully; the architecture, in the Bauhaus or modern-objective style, is literally haunted by a calamity that matches the eerie aura of the project. I'm always a fan of (post)modern living spaces being overtaken by supernatural conflicts (again: “Pulse”, or recently Andrea Arnold’s “Bird”) —a stylistic paradox with strong dramatic effectiveness and a force of its own, in this film as well. The play with sound, silence, and the reduced soundtrack offers many moments that highlight the true strengths of sound film. For me, "Noise" is – so far – the highlight of the Fantasy Film Fest Nights. Furthermore, the plot contains an exciting lore and a concept that can be further developed with subsequent films. If this film is a success, I can foresee a new franchise.

Sozialbau Noir trifft auf Haunted House: Motive, wie wir sie aus Polanskis “The Tenant” oder aus J-Horror-Klassikern wie Korusawas “Pulse” oder Nakatas “Ringu” kennen, finden in “Noise” eine neue Form. Mit einer enorm dichten Atmosphäre, einem beeindruckenden Sounddesign (die Akustik und Anlage im Zoopalast ist dafür einfach ideal) und starken Bildern, die in Erinnerung bleiben, schraubt der Film das Spannungslevel von creepy auf scary mit hohem Tempo nach oben. Das Setting, eine Hochhaus-Wohnsiedlung funktioniert wunderbar; die Architektur im Bauhaus- bzw. modern-sachlichen Stil wird im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes von einem Unheil heimgesucht, das der unheimlichen Ausstrahlung der Wohnsiedlung entspricht. Ich bin eh ein Fan davon, wenn (post)moderne Lebensräume von übernatürlichen Konflikten eingeholt werden (again: siehe “Pulse”, oder zuletzt Andrea Arnolds “Bird”) - ein stilistisches Paradoxon mit einer starken dramaturgischen Wirksamkeit und einer eigenen Wucht, auch in diesem Film. Das Spiel mit Sound, Stille und dem reduzierten Soundtrack bietet viele Momente, die verdeutlichen, was die eigentlichen Stärken des Tonfilms an sich sind. „Noise“ ist für mich - bis jetzt - das Highlight der Fantasy Film Fest Nights. Zudem birgt die Handlung eine spannende Lore und ein Konzept, das sich mit weiteren Filmen weiterentwickeln lässt. Sollte dieser Film ein Erfolg werden, erahne ich ein neues Franchise.

Locked is entertaining, suspenseful cinema without being truly thrilling. The premise, the setting, and the visual appeal are strong, but unfortunately, I don't really identify or empathize with the protagonist. And you shouldn't dwell on the plot too much either: why does the cell phone battery last five days? How can the antagonist control the car remotely so precisely? Why is there an emergency button in the car that a) is impossible to reach and b) that the antagonist doesn't know about? It's switch-off-your-brain cinema that, aside from the dramaturgy, is technically well-crafted and once again (as is currently trendy in cinemas) hits the socially critical, eat-the-rich mark. However, the film doesn't offer any surprises.

Locked ist unterhaltsames Spannungskino, ohne wirklich spannend zu sein. Die Prämisse, das Setting und die Schauwerte sind stark, eine wirkliche Identifikation und ein Mitfiebern mit dem Protagonisten entsteht leider nicht. Und über die Handlung sollte man auch nicht zu lange nachdenken: wieso hält der Handy-Akku 5 Tage lang, wie kann der Antagonist das Auto Remote so präzise steuern, und wieso gibt es einen Notfall-Schalter im Auto, an den man a) nicht rankommt, b) von dem der Antagonist nichts weiß. Kopf-aus-Kino, das abgesehen von der Dramaturgie handwerklich gut gemacht ist, und wieder (wie im Kino momentan trendy) sozialkritisch in die Eat-the-Rich-Kerbe einhaut. Überraschungen liefert der Film jedoch nicht.

A Girl with Closed Eyes is a solid film, somewhere between fictional true crime and whodunit. However, the production occasionally seems extremely banal, and the numerous twists and flashbacks create a lot of confusion, making the character constellations often difficult to follow at first. Some dramatic moments also come across as unintentionally comical. Nevertheless, the film offers good entertainment and a few strong moments; a good debut film.

A Girl with Closed Eyes ist ein solider Film, irgendwo zwischen Fictional True Crime und Whodunit. Allerdings mutet die Inszenierung gelegentlich extrem banal an und die vielen Wendungen und Rückblendungen sorgen für viel Verwirrung, sodass die Figuren-Konstellationen oftmals nicht auf Anhieb nachvollziehbar sind. Manche dramatische Momente wirken zudem unfreiwillig komisch. Trotzdem bietet der Film gute Unterhaltung und ein paar starke Momente; ein guter Debütfilm.

A Whale is a mystery whose plot and meanings are not entirely clear at first glance. The protagonist moves through the story like a fish out of water - distant, enigmatic, and aloof - making it difficult for the audience to find a point of reference. Instead, the film challenges viewers to grapple with the inner logic of all the characters. The film is not primarily entertaining, but fascinating. Pablo Hernando stages a stylish and atmospheric mix of genres, drawing on the modern aesthetics of film noir and finding images that recall the master of maritime horror: Lovecraft. A film to ponder and watch again.

A Whale ist ein Mysterium, dessen Handlung und Bedeutungen sich auf den ersten Blick nicht ganz erschließen. Die Protagonistin bewegt sich sprichwörtlich wie ein Fish out of water durch die Handlung - distanziert, rätselhaft und unnahbar - und macht es dem Publikum dadurch schwer, einen Bezugspunkt zu finden. Stattdessen fordert der Film die Zuschauer, sich mit der inneren Logik aller Handelnden auseinanderzusetzen. Der Film ist in erster Linie nicht unterhaltsam, sondern faszinierend. Stilsicher und atmosphärisch inszeniert Pablo Hernando einen Genremix, bedient sich an der modernen Ästhetik des Film Noir und findet Bilder, die an den Meister des maritimen Horror erinnern: Lovecraft. Ein Film zum Mitdenken und noch mal schauen.

To celebrate the day (white smoke in Rome), we today get to Kung Fu in Rome (aka Forbidden City): The genre mix offers pace, strong choreography, and good comedic timing. From the very beginning, the audience roots for the protagonist; the fight scenes offer some decent violent moments, but never break with the relaxed adventure tone. Somewhat melodramatic, at times contrived, and often bordering on kitsch, Kung Fu in Rome nevertheless offers lighthearted, slapstick cinema – an action-packed vacation in Italy.

Zur Feier des Tages (weißer Rauch in Rom) nun Kung Fu in Rome (aka Forbidden City): Der Genremix bietet Tempo, starke Choreographien und gutes Comedy Timing. Von Beginn an rootet das Publikum für die Protagonistin; die Kampfszenen bieten ein paar ordentliche Gewaltspitzen, brechen aber nie mit der lockeren Abenteuer-Tonalität. Etwas melodramatisch, manchmal konstruiert und oft hart an der Grenze zum Kitsch bietet Kung Fu in Rome trotzdem leichtfüßiges Haudrauf-Kino - ein Action-Urlaub in Italien.

Is there such a thing as a German "provincial core"? Nachthelle (Bright Light) caters to the rural romanticism of city dwellers, like Ferien (Arslan) or Roter Himmel (Petzold), both characteristically very good films of the Berlin School, with a touch of Lynch. Sometimes it's Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, often it's Brandenburg: The old house in the countryside, romantic escapades with a bit of bare skin, and an intense summer soundscape of birdsong and lapping water create the modern Heimatfilm (homeland film) – a bit brittle, a bit sexy, and a bit intellectual. Somehow, it always works for me, even if the film isn't good; then at least it's still a guilty pleasure with a longing factor.

Gibt es sowas wie einen deutschen “Provinz Core”? Nachthelle bedient - wie Ferien (Arslan) oder Roter Himmel (Petzold); beides bezeichnenderweise sehr gute Filme der Berliner Schule - die Landleben-Romantik von Großstädtern, mit einer kleinen Prise Lynch. Mal ist es Mecklenburg Vorpommern, oft ist es Brandenburg: Das alte Haus auf dem Land, romantische Eskapaden mit ein bisschen nackter Haut und eine intensive Sommer-Geräuschkulisse aus Vogelzwitschern und Wasserplätschern ergeben den modernen Heimatfilm - ein bisschen spröde, ein bisschen sexy und etwas intellektuell. Irgendwie funktioniert das bei mir immer, auch wenn der Film nicht gut ist; dann ist dieser immer noch ein guilty pleasure mit Sehnsuchtsfaktor.

Oddity ist one of the best horror movies of this decade. Its eeriness, playful mix of superstition and psychological terror is elegant and effective. The photography, editing and art direction create an immersive power. Feels like a brutal Hitchcock ghost movie and is most likely intended to be a homage to the master of suspense. Creepy.

Best of the series; Ti West's trilogy paints an interesting, critical picture of the image of women in the dream factory. Maxxxine is postmodern cinema and confidently references 1980s pop culture—from Brian De Palma, giallo, and slasher films to 80s icons like Beverly Hills Cop and VHS aesthetics. The artificiality of the production itself seems like an artifact from another era, a nostalgic reminder of a myth deconstructed in this film: Hollywood. It's best to watch Body Double and Mulholland Drive afterward.

Bester Teil der Reihe; Ti Wests Trilogie zeichnet ein interessantes kritisches Bild zum Frauenbild der Traumfabrik. Maxxxine ist dabei postmodernes Kino und referenziert stilsicher die Popkultur der 1980er - von Brian De Palma, Giallo und Slasher bis hin zu Eighties-Ikonen wie Beverly Hills Cop und VHS-Ästhetik. Die Künstlichkeit der Inszenierung wirkt selbst wie ein Artefakt aus einer anderen Zeit, eine nostalgische Erinnerung an einen Mythos, der in diesem Film dekonstruiert wird: Hollywood. Im Anschluss dann am besten noch Body Double und Mulholland Drive schauen.

Eine gelungene Hommage a das Bloodshed-Genre; brachiale R-Rated Action vom Feinsten. // A successful homage to the Bloodshed genre; brutal R-rated action at its finest.
