It's remarkable just how good De Niro and Scorsese are at portraying emotionally stunted masculinity. I wasn't expecting this to feel so experimental at times, especially in regards to the sound design, often dialogue would be barely synced, or not dubbed in at all, it gave the film a dreamlike quality.

God this is such a good movie. I love how it holds nothing back and keeps escalating the stakes and the emotions at play. I don't know how I ever missed the incest themes of this on my first watch, how else can you interpret the "I feel like I could do anything. It's like we're not even related" line?? If Ginger thinks that eating someone is like fucking someone, and she's threatening to attack Bridgette, then...? That then ties into the codependency of their entire dynamic, poor Bridgette has been under her sister's thumb since she was at least 8, and exists for Ginger more than herself. There is something rewarding about seeing her learn to be independent, it's just awful that this situation is what it takes for her to do so. That the movie can tackle all this without ever being tacky or insensitive, and that this isn't even the most obvious stuff the movie has to say, is remarkable.
The werewolf puppet looked so good on 35mm (not that it ever looked bad mmm film grain...)! The print is was in great condition, I was amused that even this doesn't have any opening logos? Did this even have a distributer? Considering this is a Canadian film, it's a valid question. Really large queue marks, I swear they took up like 1/3 of the vertical height. I love how Toronto Suburbs this movie is, the mom having a Brick ad for sofa deals magneted to the fridge is so funny.

cruel to have a film named Phoebe about pregnancy when I'm a Pheobe and can't get pregnant 😔

Interesting little film! I don't think it's quite as effective as it could have been, but I like what it's doing all the same. The brief flashes of Phoebe imagining how telling people about her pregnancy will go are great! At first I thought the actor playing Paul was Peter Kastner from Nobody Waved Goodbye, but I see Paul's actor is John Kastner, I assume they're related?

It's really interesting to try watching this as a somewhat tongue-in-cheek homage to old adventure films, since that aspect of Raiders has been diluted by its pop culture impact (as well as its own sequels). This is attempting to deconstruct the genre in a way that's somewhat hard to parse these days, since its deconstruction/homage has inspired so much of action/adventure cinema in the past 40 years, that now it's a bit difficult to tell whats homage and what's tongue-in-cheek. It feels like half the film is going "this guy is a piece of shit", while the other half goes "this guy has no idea what he's doing", and flip-flops between whether the Piece Of Shit and Making It Up As He Goes are good or bad traits. Like Marion's backstory is establishing that Indy is a piece of shit in a bad way, but then during the flying wing fight, where he fights dirty, it says he's a piece of shit in a good way. Indy's "I don't know, I'm making this up as I go..." line is great! But then it's like god this guy really is in over his head isn't he? What does the film actually say about any of this? Hard to say 40 years on! Did Spielberg and Lucas think this hard about it? Probably not! Should they have? Yes probably! But it's neat to examine all the same, especially since the sequels (especially Last Crusade) sanitize his character to a large degree. Like the original title is just Raiders Of The Lost Ark, without the Indiana Jones And prefix; Indy is one of the Raiders here too, and being a raider doesn't usually have positive connotations. I always think the mark of a good film isn't if you can talk about it, it's if you want to talk about it, and since I'm talking about it this much it must be good!

All that aside, the film still works wonders! It's Raiders Of The Lost Ark, it's good! The flying wing->truck chase is still among the best action sequences ever (amazing 2nd unit work on this!). This is the last time we see a desperate Spielberg who has to prove himself in Hollywood, and that early era of his tends to be my favourite works; this shares a lot of DNA with Duel in how gritty it can be, and in how much you can feel Spielberg wringing everything he can from this film. It was nice to see this with someone who'd never seen it, it works great!
So many great Spielberg-oners in this. Great sound design, I love how after the flying wing explodes there's the sound of a wrench clattering that's mixed louder than anything else, it's so funny. The yellowface and brownface in this is so unfortunate, of all the things to bring forward from 40's cinema, why that.

While it's nowhere near as extensive/impressive an Americanization as Godzilla, King Of The Monsters, I'm too charmed by the idea of bringing Raymond Burr back to be upset, it's a fun idea! The added music by Chris Young fits really well, and makes the new editing decisions feel smoother. It was really funny to see the end credits do that error where they speed up halfway through for some reason.
Really cool to see that this print is original, since it starts with the Bambi Meet Godzilla short. Really fun that the projectionist screened the Godzilla Dr Pepper ads before the film! You can tell this is a Canadian film because, when Kelly-Anne's AI assistant says its 7:30 PM, it's already pitch-black outside.

Very good! Still hard to watch at times on a second viewing, still quite intense. Juliette Gariepy is such a phenomenal actor with expressions, she's so good at conveying the blankness hiding under Kelly-Anne's practiced "emotions". Whether Kelly-Anne has always been this empty inside, or if she's made herself be this way, are equally compelling character backgrounds. It's so startling when we see her actually feeling an emotion instead of performing one.
Cinematography looked great on a big screen! I'm pretty sure Don McKellar was in my audience, so that's cool! I'm still not 100% sure what the ending means, or what those glitchy smear shots mean, but i'll enjoy thinking about them. Shoutout Ada Rook as Kelly-Anne's workout music! On the big screen I was able to see that the courtroom uses Roku TV's, so that's fun. Reminded that amipwned? is a real website, and you should check if your s have been compromised.

Red Rooms q&a with director Pascal Plante (mild spoilers):
-"i like torrenting" likely thing for the director of this film to say
-born out of pandemic anxiety. written mostly 2021. He re true crime being everywhere, like tiger king and the 6 hour ted bundy doc. true crime left him feeling empty, and he wanted to understand what drew true crime fans to the genre. during pandemic restrictions he went back to nostalgic films, including lots of horror. he had to figure out how to switch his empathy back on after binging true crime and horror, and experience which which he put into kelly-anne
-he did research on it the cyber elements of the film, and talked to cyber crime experts. he says he has no idea how this world works
-he didnt want hacking to feel like magic, wanted it to be realistic. despite this, he did talk to Juliette Gariepy about how hacking is like modern witchcraft
-kelly-anne is like travis bickle or "the guy from nightcrawler", and he wondered why there weren't any female characters like that. She is tech savvy, but inept socially
-Plante says she has a void she needs to fill, and so this murder trial is something she uses
-he doesnt want to credit any specific muderer as inspiration, but he does acknowledge Luke Magnotta since that trial took place at the Montreal courthouse
-shooting in those downtown areas of montreal was difficult. this is the first film shot in the security area of the montreal courthouse, and it took a lot of work to get permits. the courtroom itself is a set.
-he says the big apartment towers are interesting; he doesnt live in one and doesn't want to, but he finds them fascinating. regardless of where you go, you find anonymous towers like that everywhere
-the wind blowing outside Kelly-Anne's appt was inspired by an experience staying at a friends apartment in toronto
-plante wanted the audience to have empathy for both characters. he thinks audiences tend to judge people very fast, and he wanted to give them time to find a way into having empathy for the leads
-plante's partners friend was a jury member on the Magnotta trial. she mentioned that every day, there were fans in the audience, which was a story kernel that started evolving. he found a blog written by a fan which started as a loving appreciation of Magnotta, then had a long pause between updates, followed by a final post that apologizes for all of it; this mirrors clementine's arc
-plante went on 4chan to get inspiration, but does not use it
-the biggest challenge of the film is filming screens. audiences have a strong sense of what is real or fake on movie computer screens, it's hard to make them both interesting & intelligible. an example was making the poker games comprehensible to people who have no idea how poker works, while still feeling like a real game. describes the order of fake computer use as an elaborate powerpoint, its more animated that you'd think. majority of screen shots are shot on actual computer screens, with mild VFX to correct things like typos
-his brother did the score. he wrote the film while creating a "moodboard of songs". lots of metal and noise music. he wanted a melody for the score; he wanted a theme a 6 yo could hum.
-for plante, he can see that visual gore is fake and safe. audio "gore" is much more effective. mentions french film "in my skin" as only time he found visual gore effective. believes sound is the most powerful tool for this. deprive one sense to overstimulate others
-arthurian legend & lady of shallot. icing on the cake, you dont lose anything if you miss out on it. kelly-anne has no character background. kelly anne has so little decoration that what is there needs to say lots about her. gives us a way into kelly-anne's dark romantic mind, it gives us a way into her worldview
-glass cages are a motif in the film; kelly-anne's appt, Ludovic's prison box during the trial, etc
-when asked whats going on with kelly-anne, replied "what do you think?"
-told Gariepy to let Kelly-Anne study Clementine like an animal, like she's trying to learn to be human
-Gariepy knocked it out of the park in auditions. she was cast very quickly. Babine was chosen because she brings a tenderness to the role that was neccesary for her to gain empathy; "she has eyes like a wounded animal"
-he didnt like the scene where we find out that Kelly-Anne has seen the video, but he feels the actors made it much better that it came across on the page
-plante prefers writing women. he lets the actors do the first take as he wants, then lets the actors guide the scene during retakes to see if they bring anything new to it. especially with writing women, they bring things to his characters that he might not have thought of.

That scene where that lady gets her finger stuck in a rotary dial has given me a new irrational fear, what an awful concept!

Inexplicable, scene-to-scene perplexing, and frankly would have been a bit much if I wasn't seeing it with an audience that was 100% on board. Luckily I was seeing this with that kind of an audience, so I had a lot of fun!

The musical scenes are great! Obviously the Villiage People make good music, but the sequences themselves are maximalist in the best way, I loved the splitscreen & optical work during the YMCA number. Steve Guttenberg is putting so much energy into every line that you can see his neck tendons straining in literally every shot. Bring back full frontal nudity in PG movies! It's always nice to see Barbara Rush show up in stuff. I love how during the final two musical numbers, zero effort is made to hide the camera operators in the audience, to the point where you can see someone whisper in the cam op's ear and tell them to move to stage right, at which point you then get to watch them struggle their way through the crowd.

Thinking about the person I met last week who told me she went through a car movie phase, and that she made a bunch of friends watch this in middle school and none of them liked it.

A movie that lives and dies by its car chase, so luckily the car chase is fantastic! That double exposure during the final jump is so cool! The stunt driving in this is very impressive, I love when you can tell the drivers are in actual danger; I can't condone that kind of filmmaking, but it is exciting to watch!
The version on Tubi (and everywhere I think?) is a strange "restored" version that seems to have come out when the remake came out; it suffers from a new sound mix with bad stock music and sound effects. I love how in almost every scene, someone makes fun of Clint's cowboy outfit, is Coogan the first person to experience cowboy-based microagressions?

so misogynystic it makes the Connery Bond films look feminist, and I wish I was joking. So "old grumpy conservative" it feels like a parody, I'm genuinely not sure what here is supposed to be a joke? The woman complaining about being abused by her partner is definitely played for laughs, and the whole movie is mean spirited like that. The main plot isn't good enough to keep me interested, I ended up having to pause halfway through for other reasons, and I was considering not bothering with finishing. At least it has a decent motorbike chase at the end. The footage of New York Airways, which apparently would helicopter you on to the Pan Am building in downtown New York, is very cool!
Painfully stodgy and conservative, all its Commentary On Youth moments are so silly. Definitely interesting as a dry run for Dirty Harry, at least that film had style; this is shot & lit like a TV movie, and I say that as someone who loves TV movies from this era. Bizarre opening scene where McCloud tracks down a naked indigenous man who doesn't speak english?? I guess it's to establish his tracking skills, but going "he outtracked an indigenous man (who is assumed to naturally be a tracker??)" is the joke answer for establishing your character
Definitely interesting as a pilot for McCloud.

I knew this would be great in a theatre, but I wasn't prepared for it to hit this hard! Truly one of the movies of all time. Pretty much perfect; the romance is lovely, the action is intense, the melodrama is pitched at the perfect crowd-pleasing level, the acting is great, the sets and costuming are museum level quality, the effects are seamless (I love miniatures <3 ), this combines so many things I love in movies and puts them in one package. This was so much fun with an audience, when Rose spits on Cal everyone cheered, and people sung along during the end credits.
You really feel the weight and impact of every death during the sinking scenes, it's harrowing and it weighs on you like a stone. That this never loses the human touch, even during its biggest spectacle moments, is so impressive. This also hates rich people, which is always nice to see. I love a good melodrama! I love sincere movies!

The filmmaking here is impeccable, I can't imagine how much work went into coordinating a film as complex as this! and that it works this well?! nothing on this scale will be made like this again, and while that makes me sad, what a way for this rather analog style of filmmaking to go out.
Good scripting, the framing device allows Cameron to lay out all the technical stuff ahead of time, so that once we're in the action, we stay focused. I like this era of sound design, where they haven't quite gotten used to the clarity of digital recording, so the occasional sound effect, like gunshots, are so clear and loud.
The romance is simple in the best way, these two are lovely why wouldn't they fall in love that fast? Winslett and DiCaprio really capture the sense that both of them are shocked by how fast this is moving too, but that they're too deep to care about things like logic; the "this is crazy, that's why I trust it" line puts into words their entire relationship, and their chemistry sells that. The true story of Titanic is melodramatic as it is, and adding more to is works wonderfully. I was surprised by how lesbian the romance scenes feel? Like all the focus on hands? The way Rose naked is never gawked at? the tenderness of it all? How Jack is the one shown shaking and nervous after? idk i was a bit struck by that.

As someone who was a Titanic kid, I appreciate how much of this is James Cameron nerding out over Titanic; I feel like half the sets, like the one scene in the ship gymnasium, are set there because Cameron wanted to walk through Titanic himself, and I ire that!

I'm very curious why this is on here, since this is nothing more a two-part TV episode, but whatever! I'm amused that this is so reverential to the pilot film, TV rarely considers the pilot as canon, let alone has lots of flashbacks to it. I'm also amused that this carries over the wild editing style from the pilot, whether its a series quirk, or just as a result of this and the pilot sharing an editor, I'm not sure. It's always nice to see Lorraine Gary show up in something! This implies that Ironside dreams of himself being berated by himself, strange purgatory tbh

The main theme to this genuinely goes so hard, it's going to be stuck in my head all week I just know it.

I half watched/half fast-forwarded through this with my dad because I knew it was filmed in Ontario, and indeed it was! I loved the Moon Base just being the Ontario Place pods. The effects are occasionally quite good, the final shot of the film has a Douglass Trumbull-esque lense flare that looks fantastic, but most of them are far less effective. I appreciate how zero effort is made to make the silly robots look unsilly, this feels very Star Trek TOS/classic Dr. Who in that regard. The soundtrack is very 70's in the best ways, I love the disco!

A very interesting movie, it ends up in this awkward middle ground between not being anywhere near as hard sci-fi as 2001, yet feeling more hard sci-fi than most films that popped up around this time. There are some very cool ideas here, but they feel a bit watered down, or aren't given the weight they need, but the concepts are still there, and faithfully adapted from the book from what I . This feels extremely mid-80's, tonally, fashion-wise, interior design-wise, and not in a fun retro-future way, but in a very product-of-its-time way. Far from a failure, but still not quite a success.

I'm not sure I can think of a better way to celebrate 1 year on HRT than to watch Cronenberg on 35mm.

Not hot enough! Lots of sex, but I never felt the ion behind it, and I never quite got why these characters are so drawn to car crashes. There's obvious erotic appeal with cars, and crashes are so violent and cathartic that it's natural to associate them with intense sex, but I never got into the character's heads and saw what this kink was fulfilling within them, it didn't go deep enough. Like I understand the car crash kink! It's obvious! But show me what it's doing for the characters, show me why they're drawn to this lifestyle. Honestly I'm not quite sure how the film lost me, this should be a slam dunk, I love weird fucked up sex stuff in movies! I wanted to love this!!! I wanted this to for cars what Challengers did for tennis!!!
A lot of the car sex felt very detached emotionally, which maybe is the point, but it wasn't working for me character-wise. The sex itself was boring, always straight to penetration, no kink, no taboo outside of the idea of car crash sex, I needed more scenes like when the lead starts eating out someones accident scar, that was extremely erotic. Maybe this is what happens when cis people can't have t4t sex, I think if the lead just got clicker trained he'd be a lot happier.
I was disappointed by how little narrative thrust this had, I'm not even sure it there was a narrative? I was expecting it to be "the lead is traumatized from a car crash, and then finds himself weirdly drawn to this subcommunity", but the guy is already into weird sex, his partner is fucking on the wing of a plane in the first scene, I never felt any real escalation of the stakes, or got what's driving these characters. It made the film feel longer than it was, because I had little to latch on to. Maybe it's because I was in a car crash recently, but I just wasn't feeling it. I wanted this to give me new kinks but instead it left me cold, outside of the occasional moment (I need a scar that can be eaten out...)

I always like a good melodrama! Lots of snappy dialogue, I loved Eve Arden's character. I'm not at all surprised that Joan Crawford won an Oscar for this, she is very very good here! Veda is all sorts of awful, but realistically so. Great cinematography, that pier set is gorgeous! The scene where Kay has pneunomia and is coughing badly was kind of hard to watch when kids are frequently getting Long COVID and coughing like that is more common in that age group. The scene where Mildred Pierce and Monte Beragon flirt by doing incest play was interesting, I didn't know people had that kink in the 40's.

Not entirely sure what I think, but I think it'll live in my dreams for a while. Definitely a movie I'll be processing for a while, there is so much going on here. I think this will happen to me someday. This really captures the way how, in the middle of a dream, you'll wander into a setting/plot from a previous dream, and the dreams will start overlapping in strange ways. I'm glad I've finally had a David Lynch film I mostly vibed with, I love when movies are impenetrable <3
This has the most unexpected Terry Crews cameo. I liked how this uses the same atonal classical music as the score to The Shining. The AI-upscaling was really bad, at best it ruined the crunchy video texture, and at worst it ruined subtle facial acting and introduced artifacting that was extremely distracting. The audience also kept laughing at the movie, which was annoying. When I rewatch this I'll have to watch a DVD alone on a CRT TV, I feel like thats ideal for this tbh.

I'm glad this exists, because the making of Computer Hearts sounds like one hell of a mess. Kind of poorly put together as a doc, but interesting all the same. I was surprised to hear that Louise wanted the start of the film to feel like a student film, so that when the effects kick in it's a shock, which was nice to hear because that worked 100% on me the first time viewing  Computer Hearts. I appreciate that Louise lets people shittalk her and the production, it's honest. It's neat to hear what the origin of the Hentai Cop name is, it makes too much sense that it originated in high school. Considering how much Dionne Copland contributes to the finished product, I'm even more curious to check out her solo directed projects.
As someone who ed on the chance to make a doc pre-transition because she didn't want to be on camera, the fact that Louise doesn't appear anywhere in the doc, despite being the apparent interviewer, and a key creative figure, really stuck out to me.

Surprisingly good?? I went into this expecting an early silly airplane disaster movies (one of my fav subgenres), and while this hit lots of the clichès I wanted (I'm so glad John Saxon got to play the panicked asshole), I was pleasantly surprised by being surprised by the plot! There are ideas here that I'm surprised haven't shown up again in a later film, and I found myself genuinely unsure how the plane would get out of the movie in one piece. There's also a great setup & payoff that had me going "wow this is actually well written", which isn't always the case with this genre! Plus this feels like it has to have been an inspiration for Speed. I like when my trash is good, and this delivered! Plus this keeps its pace up and has some stylish shots from time to time.
It seems the print on Youtube was a European theatrical print at some point, because all the commercial breaks were removed; the mark of a good TV movie is if you can remove the breaks without it ruining the pacing, and this achieves that. It's also cool to see that Universal would go through that effort, the Man From UNCLE European releases didn't bother with that.

still very fun! I first watched this when I was like 16 and I thought it was the coolest thing ever, and it still works very well! This is a great movie for analog tech, I love how everyone is communicating thru like 3 different radio sets and constantly punching people in and connecting them. I love how much on screen expository text there is, the Super X shows up and not only do you get a caption saying "Super X", you're also informed that its a Municipal vehicle.

There's a review I've seen that says something along the lines of "you can tell this was directed by a guy who spent most of his career being a 1st Assistant Director", and I think that's very true. This is competent, workmanlike filmmaking that's missing that something special. Clearly very indebted to Submersion Of Japan's dour tone & stylings, but it seems like a lot of Japanese cinema was inspired by how Submersion handled it's narrative. The movie feels vey safe, ultimately to its detriment, I'm glad Godzilla vs Biollante gets weird with it again. On this watch I realized the script is kind of bad? Why is a Tokyo evacuation called like 4 times, and yet there's always people left in the city? The script balances it's elements poorly, the human drama is weak, Super X doesn't fit the more serious trappings, the best element here is the Cold War political stuff; America and the Soviet Union being framed as nuclear bullies is so interesting, I could have watched a whole movie of cabinet meetings to discuss how to handle Godzilla! Honestly I just need to finally watch Shin Godzilla. My issues with the script could be from the subtitles, which felt very clunky and I suspect (based off nothing to be fair) that they are rather literal translations, regardless of how well they read in English.

It's always nice to see classic Toho guys like Yosuke Natsuke, Hiroshi Koizumi and Yoshifumi Tajima show up in stuff, and Keiju Kobayashi gives a genuinely fantastic performance as the Prime Minister that's stuck with me since I first watched this. I really like the score, the deep ominous Godzilla theme is great, and unique from the more Ifukube-indebted scores.
The effects are iffy, some are fantastic, most are quite good, but there are others that are not quite up to par. A lot of the miniatures are lit weirdly, Godzilla always seems to have an edge light that makes his skin look too rubbery. I love the cybot, when it works it works, and when it looks a bit wonky I love it even more <3

I appreciate how this kinda feels like a high budget TV episode; in anything other than Star Trek that would be a complaint, but the cheapness relative to The Motion Picture is charming, and fits the TV show. Ricardo Montalban is such a good villain, not enough scenery chewing in movies these days. I'm glad William Shatner was talked into letting Kirk age, it works really well for the film, and Shatner gives a really good performance, especially in the final scenes. I love how James Horner's score is so derivative of his later Aliens score, I love his stuff (pump that Khan theme into my veins, I love the frenetic horns and piano stings!) but that guy really did tend to recycle himself.

kinda obsessed with Tár boxing her punching bag to the tune of Eine Kleine Nachtmusik.

It's so nice to see a film that hates its lead, this has so much contempt for Lydia Tár, as it should. Truly exceptional filmmaking throughout, it's maybe one of the most confident films I've ever seen ?? , there's so much going on here that I missed on my first two viewings, I feel like I could rewatch this who knows how many more times and still pick up on things. I still missed the ghosts that are supposed to be visible haunting Lydia, I might need to cheat and find a clip online.
Incidentally, the way this uses the internet and social media feels so natural and organic that it's easy to take for granted, it puts this film in line with works like We're All Going To The World's Fair or Red Rooms for understanding how to internet works, and how to make that work for your film. Acting throughout is phenomenal, from everyone, especially Cate Blanchette, she makes Tár such a compelling person to watch. It was great fun seeing this with an audience primed by the intro to laugh with the film, there were so many bits that got great reactions, the drama here is so rich, and the film is really so funny. Honestly I can't wait to rewatch this again someday, if this isn't a beloved classic someday I'll be shocked, I treasure when my lil online bubble was making jokes about this for months.

I really wish I'd been able to see Days Of Happiness before rewatching this, how can I not compare that film about a lesbian orchestra conductor performing Mahler's 5th while dealing with interpersonal troubles to this film about a lesbian orchestra conductor performing Mahler's 5th while dealing with interpersonal troubles? What a fascinating thing that those two films came out at the same time.
I like the little flights of fancy the film takes, like when Lydia is threatened by a demon dog (??) while doing spontaneous urbex, or how screams from Blair Witch play while she's jogging; I seeing a post where someone was joking that "Tár is about a character who doesn't realize she's in a horror movie" and that's a fun way to read those scenes.

David Leitch has a remarkable talent for taking movies that should be effortless fun and making them kind of exhausting, but if only because of his clear enthusiasm and love for stuntwork, I found this a lot more enjoyable than Bullet Train. This relies so much on Ryan Gosling's charm, lucky for the filmmakers he has lots!
I ire how many multi-cam stunt setups there were, and the blooper reel Hal Needham style makes clear that a lot of stunts here are real; too bad a lot still end up looking faked bc of adding extra elements to the shots in post. If David Leitch is the modern Hal Needham, I wouldn't mind more of these honestly, as long as I only watch them on planes. Editing really annoyed me in spots. I'm glad Aaron Taylor Johnson is getting roles now that aren't generic. Considering how little this references the TV show, I was really surprised when it had homages right at the end. The 0.5 seconds of the Six Million Dollar Man running noise during a fight scene caught me so off guard. The one joke at the expense of the Heard/Depp trial was tasteless.
