A ranking of every single movie to win the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film. A lot of these movies are great, but this award also has the problem that they generally just give it to whichever Disney or Pixar movie came out that year, which has led to quite a few boring winners and a lot of great, creative movies being overlooked. (Many of us The Lego Movie somehow not even being nominated in 2015.)

  1. Finding Nemo
  2. WALL·E

  4. Spirited Away

Alex Garland is one of my favourite directors, probably because Ex Machina was one of the most influential movies on me as a teenager.

This is my ranking of all of the movies he's directed, not counting the films he's written but not directed.

Original article: www.pastemagazine.com/movies/best-movies/50-best-movies-of-the-decade-2000-2009

Paste Magazine's list of the best movies of the 2000s, originally published on 3 November 2009, written by Paste Staff. It can be very interesting to see people's takes from fourteen years ago. The list is pretty different to how I imagine it would be if they made this list now, but that means there are some interesting recommendations that we usually wouldn't get (like Ghost Dog at number 26). I have only seen 27 out of 50 (54%). If we consider the tied films separately, then I have seen 30 out of 53 (56%).

Some statistics:

The highest-rated film out of the 50 on Letterboxd is City of God (number 1) at 4.50/5 and the lowest-rated is Millions (number 36) at 3.20/5. The longest entry on this list is unsurprisingly The Lord of the Rings trilogy, included as one film at number 4, with a combined theatrical running time of 559 minutes. The longest single film entry is The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King at 201 minutes and the shortest is The Squid and the Whale (number 50) which is 81 minutes long. Lastly, the oldest film on the list is Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai (number 26) which was actually released in 1999 but was erroneously included in this list. (Beau Travail (number 6) was also released in 1999.) The newest movie here is Up.

As far as the Oscars go, there are three Best Picture-winners present - The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, The Departed and No Country for Old Men - with nine more nominees. The list also features three winners of the Palme d'Or - Elephant, L'Enfant and 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days.

Directors with multiple films on the list:

2 films - Joel and Ethan Coen, Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne, Christopher Nolan

*Also, Peter Jackson directed all three Lord of the Rings movies, included as one film at number 4 and Quentin Tarantino directed both Kill Bill movies, included as one entry at number 33.

  1. City of God
  2. Amélie
  3. Almost Famous
  4. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring

Number 4 was actually a tie between all three Lord of the Rings movies, so I just included the first film to represent the trilogy.

  5. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
  6. Beau Travail
  7. Lost in Translation
  8. The Son
  9. No Country for Old Men
  10. The Royal Tenenbaums

Original article: www.pastemagazine.com/movies/best-movies/the-80-best-movies-of-the-1980s/

Paste Magazine's list of the 80 Best movies of the 1980s, published on 10 November 2021 and written by Michael Burgin, Joan Radell, Jeremy Matthews, Scott Wold, Michael Dunaway & Amy Glynn. The list is mostly made up of American movies, with many of the top spots taken up by the usual fare. Then again, most of these movies are genuinely great. Besides, there is also space for less widely seen Hollywood movies and for foreign films. I have currently seen 48 out of the 80 movies (60%).

Some statistics:

The highest-rated movie on Letterboxd is Ran (number 18) at 4.48/5 while Ladyhawke (number 80) is the lowest-rated at 3.29/5. The longest film to be included is also Shoah at an imposing 566 minutes. The shortest, however, is Monsieur Hire (81 minutes). The oldest movie on the list is Gates from Heaven, which some resources (including Letterboxd) list as being released in 1978 whereas others say February 1980. The newest is The Little Mermaid.

As far as the Oscars go, five Best Picture winners are on the list (Ordinary People, Chariots of Fire, Amadeus, Platoon and The Last Emperor) with sixteen other nominees present. There are only two Palme d'Or winners on the list: Kagemusha and Sex, Lies, and Videotape.

Directors with multiple films on the list:

3 films - Rob Reiner, Martin Scorsese
2 films - Woody Allen, James Cameron, Joel Coen, Roland Joffé, Stanley Kubrick, Akira Kurosawa, Spike Lee, David Lynch, Errol Morris, Steven Spielberg, Robert Zemeckis

  1. Raging Bull
  2. E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial
  3. Do the Right Thing
  4. The Princess Bride
  5. The Thin Blue Line
  6. Raiders of the Lost Ark
  7. The Empire Strikes Back

Original article: www.pastemagazine.com/movies/best-movies-1960s/

Paste Magazine's Top 100 Movies of the 1960s, published on 6 September 2022, written by Paste Movies Staff. This list is full of a lot more foreign language films than Paste's lists for the previous few decades, which is nice but also means that I haven't seen a lot of them. In fact I've only seen 58 of the 100.

Some statistics:

The highest-rated entry on the list is Harakiri (number 11) at 4.67/5 while A Thousand and One Nights (number 88) is the lowest-rated at 3.33/5. The longest entry is the three-part Human Condition series - which is included as one film at number 23 - with a combined running time of 574 minutes. The longest single film entry is The Sorrow and the Pity (251 minutes). The shortest movie on the list is The War Game at 48 minutes. The oldest film is The Human Condition I: No Greater Love, which is actually from 1959 but makes the list as a part of the Human Condition film series, which stretched into the 1960s. The newest film on the list is The Honeymoon Killers, which was in fact released in February 1970 but was included in this list erroneously.

As far as the Oscars go, five Best Picture winners made the list (The Apartment, Lawrence of Arabia, The Sound of Music, In the Heat of the Night and Midnight Cowboy) while ten other nominees are present. Only three winners of the Palme d'Or are represented: The Leopard, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg and If....

Directors with multiple films on the list:

6 films - Jean-Luc Godard
3 films - Masaki Kobayashi, Stanley Kubrick, Akira Kurosawa, Jean-Pierre Melville
2 films - Robert Aldrich, Ingmar Bergman, John Ford, John Frankenheimer, Sergio Leone, Roman Polanski, Wolfgang Reitherman, John Sturges, Hiroshi Teshigahara, François Truffaut, Luchino Visconti

  1. 2001: A Space Odyssey
  2. Psycho
  3. Au Hasard Balthazar

Original article: www.pastemagazine.com/movies/1950s/the-100-best-films-of-the-1950s/

Paste Magazine's Top 100 Movies of the 1950s. Paste has done lists for the best films of all decades since the 1920s (besides the '70s for some reason). The very top of the list is mostly the sort of classics that you'll find being recommended in a ton of other places, but there are quite a few interesting entries as well: foreign films that aren't that widely known in the English-speaking world and more "low-brow" genre movies. I have seen 63 of the 100, which is not a great showing, but I will work my way through the remaining movies, especially the major classics that I haven't seen.

Some statistics:

Out of these, the highest-rated on Letterboxd is 12 Angry Men (number 11) at 4.61/5 while the lowest-rated is Houseboat (number 65) at 3.18/5. The longest film present is Ben-Hur (222 minutes) and the shortest is Night and Fog (32 minutes). The oldest entry is Cinderella and the newest is Ben-Hur.

As far as Oscars go, six Best Pictures winners are on the list (All About Eve, An American in Paris, From Here to Eternity, On the Waterfront, The Bridge on the River Kwai and Ben-Hur) with 16 other nominees represented.

Directors with multiple films on the list:

7 films - Alfred Hitchcock
6 films - Billy Wilder
3 films - Ingmar Bergman, Terence Fisher, John Huston, Elia Kazan, Akira Kurosawa, Joseph L. Mankiewicz, Vincente Minnelli, Nicholas Ray
2 entries - Richard Brooks, Henri-Georges Clouzot, George Cukor, Federico Fellini, John Ford, Howard Hawks, Stanley Kubrick, Max Ophüls, Alain Resnais, George Stevens, Andrzej Wajda, Orson Welles, William Wyler, Fred Zinneman

  1. Vertigo
  2. Sunset Boulevard
  3. Rear Window
  4. All About Eve
  5. The Bridge on the River Kwai
  6. Seven Samurai
  7. Tokyo Story
  8. Singin' in the Rain

Original article: www.pastemagazine.com/movies/1940s/the-50-best-films-of-the-1940s/

Paste Magazine's Top 50 Movies of the 1950s, published on the 4th of March 2017 and written by Amy Glynn, Andy Crump, Dom Sinacola, Jim Vorel and the Paste Staff. I recently stumbled across Paste's list of the best 1920s movies and I've ended up using their decade lists as a source of a good old movie recommendations. This list is unusually heavy on Hollywood fare with less foreign and diverse representation than the other ones, but it's still got quite a lot of interesting recommendations. I have seen a pretty unimpressive 30 (60%).

Some statistics:

The highest-rated of these movies on Letterboxd is It's a Wonderul Life (number 10) at 4.37/5 while the lowest-rated is The Uninvited (number 50) at 3.49/5. The longest film on the list is Children of Paradise (191 minutes) and the shortest is The Wolf Man (70 minutes). The oldest entry is His Girl Friday and the newest is Adam's Rib.

As far the Oscars go, there are three Best Picture winners on the list (Rebecca, Casablanca and All the King's Men) with 14 other nominees in there.

Directors with multiple films on the list:

4 films - Howard Hawks, Alfred Hitchcock
3 films - George Cukor, John Huston, Orson Welles
2 films - Frank Capra, Michael Curtiz, Akira Kurosawa, Jacques Tourneur

  1. Citizen Kane

This is my first time doing the Criterion Challenge. All of the movies are first-time watches so I'll be watching a lot of movies that I've been meaning to watch for a while. I've restricted myself to movies in the actual Criterion Collection, not allowing films that are simply on the Criterion Channel.

I plan on watching them in the order below, one a week for the whole year. I have specified the theme for each film in the notes.

  1. Sullivan's Travels

A film from the CC40 box set

  2. Hedwig and the Angry Inch

A film from the year I was born

  3. 3 Women

    Directed by Robert Altman

  4. F for Fake

A film that would be my first choice in the Criterion Closet

  5. Z

    Great Soundtrack

  6. Rocco and His Brothers

    John Turturro's Adventures in Moviegoing

  7. The Circus

    1920s

  8. A Woman of Paris: A Drama of Fate

A film that will be added to the physical collection in 2025

  9. The Awful Truth

    1930s

  10. Naked

The BBC's list of the best female-directed films, published on 26 November 2019 based on a worldwide critics' poll.

The list made in response to the dominance of male directors in their previous polls. I appreciate this poll for bringing attention to a lot of female directors. Unfortunately it's still very dominated by white directors, though that's because of issues beyond the scope of this list. The list also skews towards newer movies since female filmmakers have mostly become more prominent with time. (Unfortunately, one early filmmaker who did make the cut is Leni Riefenstahl.) I have seen a pitiful 32 out of 100.

Some statistics:

The highest-rated entry on Letterboxd is Paris Is Burning (#38) at 4.49/5 while the lowest-rated is unsurprisingly Triumph of the Will (#45) at 3.06/5 which was a pretty regrettable inclusion. The longest film on the list is Jeanne Dielman, 23 quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles at 202 minutes and the shortest is At Land which is a mere 15 minutes. Lastly, the oldest inclusion is Shoes (1916) and the newest is Portrait of a Lady on Fire.

Directors with multiple films on the list:

6 films - Agnès Varda
5 films - Kathryn Bigelow
4 films - Sofia Coppola, Claire Denis, Lynne Ramsay
3 films - Chantal Akerman, Andrea Arnold, Jane Campion, Shirley Clarke, Lucrecia Martel, Céline Sciamma
2 films - Maya Deren, Ava DuVernay, Debra Granik, Amy Heckerling, Ida Lupino, Penny Marshall, Kira Muratova, Mira Nair, Kelly Reichardt, Leni Riefenstahl

(Note that Olympia is listed as #37, but it is two separate movies on Letterboxd. I have therefore included Olympia Part One: Festival of Nations in that position.)

  1. The Piano
  2. Cléo from 5 to 7
  3. Jeanne Dielman, 23, quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles
  4. Beau Travail
  5. Lost in Translation
  6. Daisies
  7. The Hurt Locker
  8. Toni Erdmann

This is the BBC's list of the greatest foreign-language films, published on 30 October 2018 based on a global critics' poll.

This list was made to respond to the dominance of English-language movies on their previous polls. It's a pretty good list actually, although pretty traditional. There are some surprising exclusions and some surprising placements, but it still adheres pretty closely to what you'd expect. That's not necessarily bad, though, and I personally got a lot of great recommendations from here back when I was starting to get into foreign-language films. By now I have seen 84 of the 100 movies.

There are four silent films on the list, which are somewhat debatable as "foreign-language", especially Man with a Movie Camera which has no intertitles.

Some statistics:

The highest-rated entry on Letterboxd is Come and See (#59) at 4.64/5 and the lowest-rated is Touki Bouki (#62) at 3.82/5. The longest film is Shoah at an eye-watering 566 minutes, while the shortest is La Jetée which is just 28 minutes. Lastly, the oldest inclusion is Battleship Potemkin (1925) and the newest is Amour (2012)

Directors with multiple films on the list:

5 films - Ingmar Bergman, Luis Buñuel
4 films - Federico Fellini, Akira Kurosawa, Andrei Tarkovsky
3 films - Jean-Luc Godard, Abbas Kiarostami, Kenji Mizoguchi, Wong Kar-wai
2 films - Michelangelo Antonioni, Vittorio De Sica, Carl Theodor Dreyer, Fritz Lang, Ang Lee, Yasujirō Ozu, Jean Renoir, François Truffaut, Edward Yang, Zhang Yimou

A breakdown of all the represented languages with their top entry in brackets:

French - 28 films (The Rules of the Game #5)
Italian - 11 films (Bicycle Thieves #2)
Japanese - 11 films (Seven Samurai #1)
Chinese - 10 films (Farewell My Concubine #12)
Spanish - 7 films (Pan's Labyrinth #22)
German - 6 films (M #13)
Russian - 5 films (Mirror #20)
Swedish - 5 films (Persona #6)
Persian - 4 films (A Separation #21)
Cantonese - 3 films (In the Mood for Love #9)
Arabic - 1 film (The Battle of Algiers #19)
Belarusian - 1 film (Come and See #59)
Bengali - 1 film (Pather Panchali #15)
Danish - 1 film (Ordet #65)
Greek - 1 film (Landscape in the Mist #100)
Korean - 1 film (Oldboy #29)
Polish - 1 film (Ashes and Diamonds #99)
Portuguese - 1 film (City of God #42)
Romanian - 1 film (4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days #47)
Wolof - 1 film (Touki Bouki #62)
No language at all - 1 film (Man with a Movie Camera #73)

  1. Seven Samurai
  2. Bicycle Thieves
  3. Tokyo Story
  4. Rashomon

This is BBC's list of the best comedies of all time, originally published on 22 August 2017 based on a worldwide poll of critics.

One of the issues with a poll like this is that there's going to be a lot of disagreement on what constitutes a comedy, so we get some pretty weird placements where really beloved movies are pretty far down the list (like Pulp Fiction at #46 and The Exterminating Angel at #92) because most participants didn't consider them comedies. So yeah, it's kind of a weird list with some strange placements and some very disputable inclusions. I have seen 53 out of 101 (52%).

Some statistics:

The highest-rated entry on Letterboxd is The Apartment (#27) at 4.43/5 while the lowest-rated is There's Something About Mary (#81) at 3.24/5. The longest movie on the list Toni Erdmann at 162 minutes – which is pretty damn long for a comedy – and the shortest is The Music Box at just 29 minutes. The oldest film is Safety Last! (1923) and the newest is again Toni Erdmann (2016).

The list features three Best Picture winners – Annie Hall, The Apartment and It Happened One Night – and another seven nominees.

There are also three Palme d'Or winners: The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie, M*A*S*H and Pulp Fiction.

Directors with multiple films on the list:

4 films - Charlie Chaplin, Ernst Lubitsch
3 films - Woody Allen, Mel Brooks, Howard Hawks, Buster Keaton, John Landis, Preston Sturges, Rob Reiner, Jacques Tati, David Zucker
2 films - Jim Abrahams and Jerry Zucker, Wes Anderson, Luis Buñuel, Frank Capra, Joel and Ethan Coen, George Cukor, Christopher Guest, Terry Jones, Jerry Lewis, Leo McCarey, Adam McKay, Trey Parker, Harold Ramis, Billy Wilder, Edgar Wright

(Note that #100 is a tie and so there are 101 films on the list.)

  1. Some Like It Hot
  2. Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb
  3. Annie Hall
  4. Groundhog Day
  5. Duck Soup
  6. Life of Brian
  7. Airplane!
  8. PlayTime
  9. This Is Spinal Tap
  10. The General

This is the BBC's list of the best movies since 2000, published on 23 August 2016 based on a worldwide poll of critics. Obviously it could only include movies from 2000 to 2016, but the movies are distributed fairly evenly between those years. The early 2010s are the densest time frame, though, and the most represented years are 2012 and 2013 with nine movies each. I have seen a pretty unimpressive 60 out of the 102 films (58%).

Some statistics:

The highest-rated entry on Letterboxd is Yi Yi (#7) at 4.54/5 and the lowest-rated is Spring Breakers (#74) at a pretty low 2.77/5. The longest film is Carlos at a daunting 339 minutes while the shortest is Goodbye to Language at just 70 minutes. Lastly, the oldest films are Yi Yi and Requiem for a Dream which both premiered on the first day of the 2000 Cannes Film Festival (I don't know which screening was earlier in the day), while the newest film is Toni Erdmann.

There are four Best Picture winners on the list – 12 Years a Slave, The Hurt Locker, No Country for Old Men and Spotlight – and another 20 nominees.

There are also seven Palme d'Or winners: 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days, Amour, Blue Is the Warmest Color, The Pianist, The Tree of Life, Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives and The White Ribbon.

Directors with multiple films on the list:

3 films - Paul Thomas Anderson, Wes Anderson, Joel and Ethan Coen, Michael Haneke, Christopher Nolan, Apichatpong Weerasethakul
2 films - Kathryn Bigelow, David Fincher, Todd Haynes, Abbas Kiarostami, Ang Lee, Richard Linklater, Terrence Malick, Steve McQueen, Andrew Stanton, Béla Tarr and Ágnes Hranitzky, Lars von Trier, Andrey Zvyagintsev

(Note that #100 is a three-way tie and so there are 102 films on the list.)

  1. Mulholland Drive
  2. In the Mood for Love
  3. There Will Be Blood
  4. Spirited Away
  5. Boyhood
  6. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

This is BBC's list of the greatest American movies of all time, published on 21 July 2015 based on a global critics' poll.

The list is reasonably interesting. It presents a more up-to-date and interesting set of recommendations than the AFI's lists – although it does feature The Birth of a Nation – and there are some pretty surprising omissions like Rear Window and A Clockwork Orange. I have seen 80 out of 100.

There are twelve Best Picture winners on the list – 12 Years a Slave, Annie Hall, The Apartment, The Best Years of Our Lives, Casablanca, Forrest Gump, The Godfather, The Godfather Part II, Gone with the Wind, One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest, Schindler's List and West Side Story – and the winner of Best Unique and Artistic Picture from the 1st Academy Awards – Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans.

There are also five Palme d'Or winners – Apocalypse Now, The Conversation, Pulp Fiction, Taxi Driver and The Tree of Life.

Here are some statistics:

The highest-rated entry on Letterboxd is The Godfather (#2) at 4.59/5 while the lowest is unsurprisingly The Birth of a Nation (#39) at just 2.36/5. The longest movie on the list is Gone with the Wind at 233 minutes and the shortest is Meshes of the Afternoon , being only 14 minutes long, over three-and-a-half hours shorter than Gone with the Wind. The oldest film is The Birth of a Nation (1915) and the newest is 12 Years a Slave (2013).

Directors with multiple films on the list:

5 films - Stanley Kubrick, Alfred Hitchcock, Steven Spielberg, Billy Wilder
4 films - Francis Ford Coppola, Howard Hawks, Martin Scorsese
3 films - Charlie Chaplin, John Ford, Orson Welles
2 films - Woody Allen, Robert Altman, John Cassavetes, Victor Fleming, Spike Lee, David Lynch, Terrence Malick, Vincente Minnelli, Nicholas Ray, Robert Zemeckis

  1. Citizen Kane

  4. 2001: A Space Odyssey

My ranking of every film to win the Palme d'Or that I have seen. Perhaps one day I'll have seen all of them.

This is to many people the most prestigeous award that a film can receive and accordingly most of the winners are great and some of these are amongst the greatest films ever made. But in any list there are those that are less distinguished.

  1. Pulp Fiction
  2. La Dolce Vita
  3. Taxi Driver
  4. Parasite
  5. Brief Encounter
  6. Taste of Cherry
  7. Triangle of Sadness
  8. The White Ribbon

My ranking of every movie to win the Academy Award for Best Picture that I have seen. I'll probably see all of them eventually.

Despite the Oscars' increasingly poor reputation and extremely frequent embarassing mistakes, most of these movies are pretty good. Some are excellent, some are less than good. (And yeah, I know my top pick may be a bit strange given the competition.)

  1. Rocky
  2. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
  3. Schindler's List
  4. The Godfather

Original article: www.pastemagazine.com/movies/best-movies/the-best-movies-of-the-1930s/

Paste Magazine's Top 60 Movies of the 1930s, published on the 16th of August 2022. Paste has now done a list of the best movies for every decade since the 1920s (except for the '70s for some reason). As with all their other lists, this gives love to some extremely well-known classics while also recommending some more obscure movies that many of us might not know about otherwise. I've seen a pretty unimpressive 33 (55%) so far but I plan on seeing all of them eventually.

Here are some statistics:

The highest-rated entry on Letterboxd is City Lights (number 23) at 4.33/5 and the lowest-rated is Riders of Destiny (number 58) at 2.97/5. The list's longest movie is The Story of the Last Chrysanthemums (144 minutes) while Land Without Bread (29 minutes) is its shortest. The oldest movie is All Quiet on the Western Front and the newest is Destry Rides Again.

As far the Oscars go, there are two Best Picture winners on the list (All Quiet on the Western Front and It Happened One Night) and eight other nominees.

Directors with multiple films on the list:

4 films - Jean Renoir
3 films - Tod Browning
2 films - Luis Buñuel, Frank Capra, Charlie Chaplin, Michael Curtiz, John Ford, Howard Hawks, Alfred Hitchcock, Fritz Lang, Ernst Lubitsch, Leo McCarey, Kenji Mizoguchi, Yasujirō Ozu, G.W. Pabst, King Vidor, James Whale

Original article: www.pastemagazine.com/movies/best-movies/the-90-best-movies-of-the-1990s/

Paste Magazine's list of the 90 best movies of the 1990s, published on 12 July 2012 and written by Michael Dunaway. This list doesn't give quite as many interesting recommendations as their lists for earlier decades, partially just because we're generally more familiar with more recent films and the vast majority are American. It's also interesting to see how the community has slightly changed in the last ten and a half years because some of these picks weirdly seem somewhat dated (like Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me somehow making it one place behind Taste of Cherry). There are still some interesting picks, though, and not all the top entries are American. I have seen 50 out of 90 (55%).

Some statistics:

The highest-rated entry on Letterboxd is The Shawshank Redemption (number 5) at 4.53/5, while the lowest-rated is (unsurprisingly) Austing Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me (number 73) at 3.22/5. The oldest film is Metropolitan and the newest is The Talented Mr. Ripley. The longest entry present is the Three Colors trilogy, which is placed collectively at number 4: the combined running time is 290 minutes. The longest single film entry is Malcolm X at 202 minutes and the shortest is The Wrong Tros (just 30 minutes).

As far the Oscars go, there six Best Picture winners on the list (The Silence of the Lambs, Unforgiven, Schindler's List, Forrest Gump, Braveheart and American Beauty) as well as 15 other nominees. There are only three Palme d'Or winners present: Barton Fink, Pulp Fiction and Taste of Cherry.

Directors with multiple films on the list:

4 films - Joel Coen
3 films - David Fincher, Martin Scorsese, Quentin Tarantino
2 films - Robert Altman, Paul Thomas Anderson, Wes Anderson, Atom Egoyan, Krzysztof Kieślowski (or 4 if counting individual films), John Lasseter, Steven Spielberg, Lana and Lilly Wachowski

  1. Pulp Fiction
  2. Schindler's List
  3. Magnolia
  4. Three Colours: Red

Fourth place was given to the entire Three Colors trilogy. I arbitrarily chose Three Colors: Red to put here as it the highest-rated on Letterboxd and generally the most beloved.

  5. The Shawshank Redemption
  6. Fargo
  7. GoodFellas
  8. Hoop Dreams
  9. Rushmore
  10. The Apostle

...plus 80 more. View the full list on Letterboxd.

Original article: www.pastemagazine.com/movies/best-movies-of-the-1920s/

Paste Magazine's list of the greatest films of the 1920s, published on the 18th of October 2021, written by Jeremy Matthews and the Paste Movies Staff.

I stumbled across this and found a lot of movies I'd never heard of before. While it features some of the common recommendations that you'll definitely know with a ing knowledge of silent cinema (like Sunrise and The ion of Joan of Arc being in the Top 10), it also spotlights a lot of lesser-known movies, some of which are actually really difficult track down. I've only seen 32 so far (42%) but I hope to see all of them eventually as I'm trying to get more into silent cinema.

Here are some statistics:

The highest-rated entry on Letterboxd is The ion of Joan of Arc (number 6) at 4.43/5 and the lowest-rated is Downhill (number 33) at 2.94/5. The longest film is Napoléon (333 minutes!) and the shortest is Walking from Munich to Berlin (4 minutes - it's listed as 3 minutes on Letterboxd but it's actually four). The oldest movie on the list is The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari and the newest is H2O (ittedly this isn't that interesting considering that it's restricted to a ten-year window).

As far as the Oscars go, there is one Best Picture nominee (7th Heaven). Also, the winner of the Academy Award for Best Unique and Artistic Picture (Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans) as well as one nominee (The Crowd) are present.

Directors with multiple films on the list:

15 films - Buster Keaton
7 films - Edward F. Cline (all co-directed with Buster Keaton)
4 films - F.W. Murnau
3 films - Alfred Hitchcock, King Vidor
2 films - Clarence Brown, Carl Theodor Dreyer, Sergei Eisenstein, Jean Epstein, Teinosuke Kinugasa, Leo McCarey, G.W. Pabst, Victor Sjöström, Josef von Sternberg

  1. Sherlock Jr.
  2. The Crowd
  3. Un Chien Andalou
  4. Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans
  5. Steamboat Bill, Jr.
  6. The ion of Joan of Arc
  7. Our Hospitality
  8. He Who Gets Slapped

  10. The Man Who Laughs

I'm giving this challenge a go for 2025. This will help me to watch a whole lot of classics that I haven't gotten around to yet. I've tried to space this out as much as possible so that there's a good distribution of years over film history. Whittling it down to 52 was painful, but this is what I've come up with (subject to change).

Here's the original post.

  1. Cabiria
  2. Shoes
  3. I Don't Want to Be a Man
  4. Broken Blossoms
  5. Dr. Mabuse, the Gambler
  6. Safety Last!
  7. The Man Who Laughs
  8. Pandora's Box
  9. The Blue Angel
  10. The Testament of Dr. Mabuse

The Movie Book is an important part of my life as a movie lover. I read it as a teenager and it was my introduction to a lot of classic movies. I had seen barely any of the highlighted films. By now, though, I've seen most of them, so I figured I may as well rank all of them.

There are 116 movies highlighted in the book as listed here. One day I'll have seen all of them and this list will be completed.

  1. Pulp Fiction
  2. Citizen Kane
  3. Stalker
  4. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
  5. The Godfather
  6. Blade Runner
  7. M
  8. The Celebration
  9. The Shawshank Redemption
  10. Vertigo

Original article: www.pastemagazine.com/movies/best-of-2010s/best-movies-2010s-decade

Paste Magazine's list of the best movies of the 2010s, written by Paste Staff. Being a list of recent movies, there isn't really a solid concensus here and so it's pretty interesting to look at. I also appreciate that a lot of these choices are fairly unconventional (even if I disagree with quite a few of them). None of these are all that obscure, but they're not necessarily what you'd expect to see here, like Cameraperson in tenth place. I have only seen 45 out of the 100.

Some statistics:

The highest-rated of these films on Letterboxd is Parasite (number 49) at 4.58/5 while the lowest-rated is The Bling Ring (number 100) at 2.82/5. The longest film on the list is O.J.: Made in America (number 11) at 467 minutes and the shortest is The Grand Bizarre (number 90) at just 61 minutes. Lastly, the oldest movie of the bunch is Certified Copy (number 58) and the newest is Parasite (number 49).

As far as the Oscars go, there are three Best Picture-winners here - 12 Years a Slave, Moonlight and Parasite - as well as thirteen more nominees. There also four winners of the Palme d'Or present - Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives, The Tree of Life, Shoplifters and Parasite.

Directors with mutiple films on the list:

2 films - Paul Thomas Anderson, Yorgos Lanthimos, Martin Scorsese

*Also, both The Act of Killing and The Look of Silence are presented in a tie at number 27, both directed by Joshua Oppenheimer.

  1. Mad Max: Fury Road
  2. Moonlight
  3. Get Out
  4. First Reformed
  5. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse
  6. Under the Skin
  7. Annihilation
  8. The Babadook
  9. The Lobster
  10. Cameraperson

This is my ranking of all the Hammer movies that I have seen.

There is a huge number of Hammer films, so this list will never be comprehensive. The vast majority of the company's movies that I have seen (and likely will ever see) are horror movies, although there are plenty of thrillers and some straight-up comedies as well. I will keep updating this with every Hammer movie I see.

  1. Taste of Fear
  2. Frankenstein Created Woman
  3. The Curse of Frankenstein
  4. Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed
  5. Quatermass and the Pit
  6. The Damned
  7. The Abominable Snowman
  8. The Devil Rides Out
  9. Dr. Jekyll & Sister Hyde
  10. Captain Clegg

Not really a horror movie in my opinion; more of an adventure thriller.

This is my ranking of every feature film that David Lynch has directed. Many people include Twin Peaks: The Return in rankings of his movies, but it's not here because it's a season of television and I'm not sure how to compare to feature films.

  1. Mulholland Drive
  2. Blue Velvet
  3. Eraserhead
  4. Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me
  5. The Straight Story
  6. The Elephant Man

This is my list for Hooptober 11. I love doing movie challenges like this, so I've been looking forward to this one for a while.

I fill each criterion separately, that is I'll look for one movie for each one, not mix and match them. I have tried to make each film a first-time viewing for me, although, I broke that rule with the entire franchise that I'm watching (I've already seen the first three Evil Dead movies but not either of the more recent ones).

I plan on watching them in the exact order below. The notes say exactly which criterion each movie is satisfying.

  1. At Midnight I'll Take Your Soul

    6 countries: Brazil

  2. Black Christmas

    6 countries: Canada

  3. Titane

    6 countries:

  4. House

    6 countries: Japan

  5. Braindead

    6 countries: New Zealand

  6. The Host

    6 countries: South Korea

  7. Island of Lost Souls

    8 decades: 1930s

  8. What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?

    8 decades: 1960s

  9. Martin

    8 decades: 1970s

  10. Re-Animator

    8 decades: 1980s

A ranking of every Paul Thomas Anderson movie I've seen. I haven't seen Hard Eight yet but I'll definitely get round to it because he's easily one my favourite directors so it'd be nice to have seen his entire filmography.

  5. Boogie Nights
  6. Punch-Drunk Love

For some reason my sister and I decided to watch all of the Planet of the Apes movies in build-up to Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. Neither of us has ever had a particular attachment to this franchise, but we've landed up owning all of them on physical media (aside from the Tim Burton remake). So we figured we may as well watch all of them.

  1. Planet of the Apes
  2. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes
  3. War for the Planet of the Apes
  4. Rise of the Planet of the Apes
  5. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
  6. Conquest of the Planet of the Apes
  7. Escape from the Planet of the Apes
  8. Beneath the Planet of the Apes
  9. Planet of the Apes
  10. Battle for the Planet of the Apes
