In a movie week determined to do the trite thing comes another homicidal clown slasher copycat that makes no apologies to the “It” franchise as it plunders the genre for plot. The killer isn’t named Pennywise—that would be too crass—instead adopting the moniker “Frendo,” the name Javier Bardem called his victims in the Oscar-winning “No Country for Old Men.” My personal crystal ball sees no Oscars coming for this unapologetic retread. Based on a YA novel I’ve vowed never to read, “Clown in a Cornfield”—bet you’ve already guessed that’s where the murders take place—is directed by Eli Craig (“Tucker & Dale vs. Evil”) as if it’s the cleverest thing since “Scream” was a baby. Talk about delusional thinking.

Josh Hartnett continues on the comeback trail he blazed last year in ”Trap,” as a devoted dad turned serial killer. This time the former teen idol, 46, is bleached-blond grunge personified as a washed up and out Secret Service agent seeking redemption before booze finishes him. OK, the plot is defines mundane at its moldiest. The impossible mission, which our boy decides to accept or there’d be no movie, is to track down a psycho terrorist, aka The Ghost,” on a enger jet heading from Bangkok to San Francisco, and bring him back alive. Don’t worry, there will be blood. Did I mention the plane is packed with other assassins out to bag the Ghost? Well, now you know. Luckily, Hartnett and director James Madigan know how to laugh at the cliches they’re juggling. If you’re in the mood for a B-movie wallow that doesn’t make a lick of sense, here’s your poison.

In 1958, director Otto Preminger made a classic film from Francoise Sagan’s sensation-making, semi-autobiographical French novel, set on the French Riviera, about a young girl (Jean Seberg) whose closeness with her playboy father (the impossibly debonair David Niven) leads to tragedy for his rekindled romance with his age-appropriate mistress (Deborah Kerr). This strangely pallid remake from debuting Montreal filmmaker Durga Chew Bose draws fine performances from Claes Bang and Lily McInerny as the dad and fixated daughter—and exceptional work from Chloe Sevigny as the older woman—but fatally misses the palpable sense of sin festering in the sun that Preminger brought to the proceedings.

The asterisk in the title suggests that this new Marvel entry is no more than a footnote in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Fair enough. But this 36th entry in the MCU is also a pleasant surprise given the recent duds from “The Eternals” to “Captain America: Brave New World.”
It’s the human touch that raises the bar this time, best repped by an indelibly empathetic performance from Florence Pugh as Russian assassin Yelena Belova, sister of the late Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson). ed by recent Oscar nominee Sebastian Stan (“The Apprentice”) as the Winter Soldier turned Brooklyn congressman, Pugh and a game cast take on Julia Louis Dreyfus as villainous CIA director Valentina Allegra de Fontaine to build a new Avengers team. They just might pull it off as the good guys cope with relatable mental-health challenges that you don’t expect from a B list of not so super heroes. Won’t you be astonished.

Despite being stupid, vile and offensive, the OG “ant” in 2016 was a sleeper hitI So it’s a shock it took star Ben Affleck nearly a decade to return to the poisoned well in the role of Christian Wolf, a math wiz whose position on the autism spectrum allegedly made him perfect material to moonlight as a hired assassin. Hilarious, right? All the restraint Affleck showed the first time about mining a disability for violence and laughs is now out the window with the star mugging up a storm—he even line-dances!—to bring down a network of killers with all the blood and guts an R rating allows. Rain Man, we hardly knew you.

The Wedding Banquet

Remaking Ang Lee’s classic 1993 dramedy about a gay Taiwanese landlord marrying his Chinese tenant to help her get a green card, sounds like a fool’s errand. For starters, times have changed and double Oscar winner Lee (“Brokeback Mountain,” “Life of Pi” ) is no easy artist to copycat.

Luckily, director Andrew Ahn (“Fire Island’) takes on the challenge. He’s not in Lee’s class as a filmmaker—few are—but “The Wedding Banquet” hits theaters this week with its own updated spin on the sham marriage story. And Ahn and his top-tier cast, led by “SNL” MVP Bowen Yang and “Killers of the Flower Moon” Oscar nominee Lily Gladstone, deserve points for trying.

So here’s what’s shaking in “The Wedding Banquet” 2025, once again co-written by Lee collaborator James Schamus: Two same-sex couples— Lee (Gladstone) and Angela (Kelly Marie Tran) share a Seattle home with Chris (Yang) and Min (Han Gi-Chan), who live in the garage.

Conflict ensues when the lesbian couple can no longer afford the expensive IVF treatments for Lee, an Indigenous community organizer, that would make her and Angela parents. Never mind that Angela isn’t so sure she’s mommy material, despite the insistence of her mother (the great Joan Chen) whose self-proclaimed credentials as an LGBTQ activist her daughter finds suspect.

Lovesick Min is eager to marry commitment-phobe Chris—a grad-school dropout struggling as a tour guide for birders— whose refusal will cost Min a green card since he’s in the U.S. on a student visa that’s about to run out. So there’s that, coupled with the fact that Min’s conservative Korean family will disinherit him if he comes out as gay.

Solution? An arranged marriage between Min and Angela would mollify his family and pay for IVF treatments. Everybody wins, that is until Min’s grandmother, acted to feisty perfection by “Minari” Oscar winner Youn Yuh-jung, comes to Seattle for a wedding done in strict adherence to Korean tradition. Please note that everything that can go wrong, most assuredly does.

The laughs come tumbling down in a sitcom style that is geared to attract a wide audience, especially when Chris, Angela and Lee attempt to “de-gay” their house (that Lilith Fair poster must go) in the time it takes Min to drive grandma in from the airport.

Still, it’s the humanist touch of Ahn and the gifted ensemble of actors that elevate “The Wedding Banquet” above crass business as usual, though the wedding banquet itself covers most of the familiar basics, from rowdy guests to farcical outbursts.

Despite occasional dips in momentum, the film earns every giggle and sniffle on the way to an ending that sees all families as interchangeable in the core basics that count.

Wishful thinking? Maybe, given the new pressures on gay rights. But “The Wedding Banquet” is a queer romcom that keeps its heart and conscience in the right place.

The matriarch power of Chen and Youn is undeniable. But watching Yang and Tran go quiet and deeper is the revelation in a movie that brims over with humor and heart. There’s magic in it.

A lot of love and hate is going to be fired at “Sinners,” now in theaters where audiences are in for a hell ride like no other. That happens when a game-changer of a movie suddenly appears to shake things up in a multiplex drowning in formula. ”Sinners” is like nothing you’ve ever seen. It’s divisive, dangerous and primed to explode. I couldn’t have liked it more.

Writer-director Ryan Coogler daringly casts his creative muse, acting dynamo Michael B. Jordan, as identical twins, known as Smoke and Stack. The time is a single day in 1932 and the brothers, having survived WW1 and prospered by mobbing up in Al Capone Chicago, return to their Mississippi home in Clarksdale to build a juke t imbued with the culture of Black America.

Jordan and Coogler first teamed in 2013’s indie sensation “Fruitvale Station,” then went the franchise route with “Creed” and “Black Panther” (Jordan played the villain in what is still the best Marvel epic ever). Now “Sinners” practically jumps off the screen, spoiling to be heard.

Did I mention that “Sinners” is also a vampire-gangster-western-musical? It is. But what should be a tonal mess of genres at war with each other is shaped by Coogler into a volcano of creative ideas in full eruption. Shot with Imax cameras , the film demands a large screen and an audience of kindred souls ready to be rocked by a radical look at cultural assimilation.

Jordan differentiates his roles with calibrated precision. Both brothers are losers at love, Smoke with spiritual healer Annie (a terrific Wunmi Mosaku) and Stack with the married, ing-for-white Mary, played by Hailee Steinfeld with enough come-on carnality to singe the screen.

Sensuality is palpable in “Sinners,” with thrilling music permeating the movie like a living force, especially through the twins’ cousin Sammie, the son of a preacher man who condemns the pulsating beats as a tool of the devil. Newcomer Miles Catton, formerly a H.E.R. backup singer, plays Sammie with a dramatic and vocal brilliance that should land him in the Oscar race.

Coogler—his talent shining on its highest beams±—outdoes himself in a sequence that transcends time, blending roots music from blues through jazz , funk and hip-hop into a time-capsule worthy set piece, set to the Black magic of “I Lied to You” (listen up, Oscar), a new song that gets you on your feet while it blows the roof off.

As for the vampires, they don’t cheapen the movie. All praise to Coogler for taking the film’s first hour to develop our rooting interest in non-vamp characters, including the reliably magnificent Delroy Lindo on harmonica and piano as Delta Slim and a radiant Jayme Lawson as young Pearline, a heartbreaker who sings the blues with such ion that Sammie is besotted.

The bloodsuckers soon come around and with a vengeance, led by a seductively menacing Jack O’Connell as an Irish folk singer and Riverdancer named Rennick, who must ask permission—per vampire rules— to be let inside a potential victim’s house

These supernatural stand-ins for white Klansmen extend to Black sharecroppers, complicit in their own destruction through the dubious lure of living forever. Unlike Jordan Peele, the master social satirist behind “Get Out” and “Us,” Coogler doesn’t underline present-day parallels to the plague of racism. He trusts us to draw deeper conclusions and let the rhythm lead the way.

Powered by double-barreled acting from Jordan, an on-your-feet score from Ludwig Göransson, eye-popping costumes from Ruth Carter and sublime camera magic from Autumn Durald Arkapaw, “Sinners” is the best movie of this young year. Too messy for perfection, it flies high on something no vampire can match: the immortality of its devil music.

Though Coogler acknowledges his debt to 1996’s “From Dusk to Dawn,” a vamp epic from Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino, “Sinners” is a big, wild , wholly original swing from a filmmaker who lives, feels and breathes every scene in his bones. You won’t know what hit you.
