There really is something special about randomly catching a “new old” movie on the big screen. This has been on the list for a while, but never really knew much about it. Instantly became my favorite Wes Anderson. There was so much Wes in the beginning, which was awesome, but, as the movie went on I almost forgot it was his work, which is a very difficult thing to do with how obvious his movies typically are. I was so engaged in the characters to the point where you can feel like you're out there filming with them. The Bowie covers hit hard, and I was pleasantly disappointed by the absence of a Kentuckian WoW from Ned/Kingsley/Son.

]]>For the last 9 years, it’s been a pain to see the lack of love for The ant. The first movie was such an enjoyable time and I loved it right away. Over the years, hearing that it’s also one of dad’s and grandpa’s favorite movies of all time was so satisfying. Most of my family only takes in recommendations from me, and it was cool to hear that they found and loved it without my influence.
Over those same years, discovering the far from perfect reviews online for it was confusing. I understand that movie viewers can have and will form their own opinions, but for some reason, it has been one of the very few movies where I can’t see any flaws.
The ant has and will always be a comfort movie for me. I’ll probably continue to watch it at least once a year, especially because I recently learned that it’s one of my girlfriend’s comfort movies as well. So we were definitely “looking forward” to the sequel I’ve been hearing about for a year or so.
Going in, knowing that Anna Kendrick, who we both equally love, would not return, was already disappointing, but we also were both skeptical of the need of a sequel. If I had a list of my favorite movies that warranted a sequel, The ant would've been pretty low. It did everything it needed to and the story could’ve never been touched again.
Sadly, The ant 2 does exist, and to be honest, we didn’t need it. I’m glad it didn’t leave a bad taste in my mouth like Dumber and Dumber Too, Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2, or Zombieland Double Tap did. You know where the first movie was so great and then the second one was so bad that it makes you question your love for the first? This did have some good bromance moments and enjoyable action, but lacked the punch of its predecessor. Like, where’s the blowing on fingers stimming and the exploding melons with a sniper? The stuff that made me go “Woah. This guy’s a badass.”
It’s not that this one sucks, I laughed and smiled a lot. It just doesn’t come anywhere close to the flow and perfection of the original.

]]>HUGE part of my childhood. My parents raised me on all of the Sandler classics. Most of his movies, despite having good laughs, don’t offer a A+ story like this. Love a guy that has to move on from his past to figure out his true self to get where he needs to be. Still can’t believe my fifth grade teacher let my friend and I make a Happy Gilmore board game for a class project. Think it was just like a classic roll dice, move certain spots game, but had drawable cards such as:
- Hit the Mista Mista Lady, move back 3 spots
- Pull landscaping duty, lose a turn
- Somebody's closer, move one spot ahead of 1st place player
Anyways, definitely was looking forward to seeing Sandler in theaters. Feel like I’ve only seen Uncut Gems and Pixels (sadly) on the big screen.

]]>Top 3 Saddest Moments
3. When Boga the lizard is crying falling into the water with Obi-Wan and we never saw her again.
2. There was a guy sitting in my friend Alex’s seat. When I showed him our seats purchased, he reached for his paper ticket in his pocket and spilled his popcorn all down his legs and on the floor. Embarrassed, he left the theater realizing he was in the wrong one.
***Honorable Mention*** We got to see Anakin kill men, women, and children in this one. Didn’t believe he could pull it off. Not with how he was talking back on Tatooine. Dude’s literally afraid of sand.
1. A couple in the row below us gets up and leaves during Anakin vs Obi-Wan. Like while lightsabers were clashing. My group and the guy next to me were in complete shock. Tough to call yourself a Star Wars fan with actions like that.

Alamo Drafthouse

Surprisingly, after watching all four in the past few weeks again, this might be the funniest. Brea really enjoyed the “playful pranks” in all of them, but was always disturbed by the self harm and vomit worthy skits. Forever gave a more playful prank feel and managed to add in the younger cast without making us hate them or making them seem like the replacements for Dunn and Bam. And yeah Ryan’s tribute was still as emotional, brings me right back to my childhood feels.

Despite both loving and quoting him frequently, this was the first time in my life I agreed with my dad on “Jack Black’s just always doing too much”. He was crazy over the top, but I blame most of the memes on that. You know what, never mind dad, it’s Jack Black. If someone’s gonna be this crazy, it’s him. He’s allowed to be. We love Jack.

]]>At some point, the Disney sequels and remakes will hopefully slow down, but right now, they’re releasing fast enough where I didn’t even know Moana 2 had already been released in theaters and thrown on Disney+. Not that it really matters, I still haven't seen the first one, but it’s nearly impossible to have the want or need to see everything that Disney puts out.
For Snow White, the only reason I ended up watching it was because my girlfriend wanted to. An hour before the showtime, I saw that the internet was destroying it which in a weird way, made me look forward to watching and making fun of it with everyone else. Turns out our IMAX theater opening weekend only had 7 others viewers, but I had a blast.
Gal Gadot is at her worst which was fantastic. Fully believe her career could just come to an end after that performance. Looking forward to seeing if she taps in to the Razzies this year. I do believe Rachel ruined this already miserable movie, but we shouldn’t hate her at the same level of Gal. I’ll still give her a shot in a movie where she doesn’t sing, or take complete control prior to release.
The best performance of the day was sadly still Nicole Kidman. She’s just so consistent with her role. I’m nearly on the edge of my seat waiting to make sure she steps in that puddle outside of AMC Theaters. On a complete side note, do you ever imagine what movie Nicole is coming to watch? Like she probably didn't have time to catch Snow White, but she probably watched like Wonka (2023) or something like that. Or wouldn't it be cool if before a showing of Babygirl, Nicole literally walked in to your theater and recited the ad word for word, step for step, sat next to you, looked you in the eyes, and said “That’s Magic”. Talk about an immersive theater experience.
Anyways, forgot I watched this, forgot to log it two weeks later, and forgot why I didn't hate it as badly as everyone else.

Feel like the discussion with everyone is focused on the POV. Did it work for me? Absolutely. When I watch something like this, I’m not in it for the “acting”. It doesn’t bother me if it’s not “like a typical movie”. I love when people try to make something different. Similar/not similar to Tenet… one of the main complaints is not knowing the name or back story of The Protagonist. Who cares? We were put into one mission in that characters life. We don’t have to love him. We just care about the mission. With Nickel Boys, we don't have love these kids. We’re just watching as if we’re with them throughout certain stages of their childhood.

]]>On a drive home from a wedding, fourteen hours away, where I was the only guest not “related” to either family, I stopped in to a theater thirty minutes away from my Airbnb to stall before check-in. After a night slept in a rental car in a Walmart parking lot in twenty degrees, this movie hit pretty comfortably at 10:50am. If I watched it any other day, or at home, would've been an easy nap. But in a city I had never heard of, in a theater with just one elderly man repeatedly clearing his throat a couple rows behind me, this was enjoyable. Nothing more, nothing less.
