The key to great horror films are the ones that treat it like a family drama like The VVitch and Hereditary. And while this film shares a lot in common with especially Hereditary I’d say there is more interesting link to Lynne Ramsey’s You We’re Never Really Here. 

What Ramsey does with suicidal ideation, the Philippou’s accomplish with dissociation through editing and sound design. And the way that it itself becomes one of the unknowing rituals in the film is…

I’ve waited years to watch this and it did not disappoint in the slightest. I tracked this down from a thread on reddit which made going to the library to get an interlibrary loan that much easier. You can find the film here

It wears the dreyer and bergman influences on its sleeve. It sheds the dreyer in favor of bergman the deeper it goes into the servants psychosis. The blocking here is on par with bergman, it’s just great frame…
