An amazing film with astonishing aerial cinematography during the dogfight sequences, clever camera movement during non-aerial scenes, such as the swing sequence early in the movie or the incredible tracking shot through the multiple tables at the cafe later in the story, and great characters. This was a wonderful experience, certainly one of the best silent films I’ve seen, and one of the most worthy Best Picture winners.

This begins with an exciting land rush sequence and has a few other interesting scenes, such as the shootout between Yancey and The Kid, but the overall story just isn’t that compelling. It was neat to see the town of Osage evolve over time as an impressive piece of production design.

The liberal use of title cards sometimes feels redundant or a holdover from the silent era, but this was also occasionally used to great effect, such as “Oil” with a quick zoom in on the word to convey the excitement.

I liked Richard Dix in Hell’s Highway, but I didn’t care for his performance in this.

From Joel McCrea’s introduction brandishing two pistols in a saloon to persuade drunkards to listen to his sermon to a heartwarming finale that made me smile, this is a very good film. Joel McCrea, always reliable for a good performance, is compelling and down-to-earth as the Parson. Juano Hernandez, also very good in the seriously underrated Young Man With a Horn, presents a moving portrayal of a continuously wronged landowner with a kind, gentle demeanor.

The movie takes its time by slowly depicting scenes representing small slices of life in the town. Often in films of this type, starting as a gentle observation of life unfolding and then evolving into a third-act that requires more plot and action, the addition of a conflict feels forced and contrived, but not here. The third-act involving the disease outbreak and the attack on Uncle Famous is excellently executed.

The screenplay also contains some great dialogue, particularly in the scenes between the Parson and both the older and younger Dr. Harrison, as well as in the Parson’s reading of the “will” close to the film’s end.

Ignore the harsh reviews. This is a very good film.

A moving portrait of a family with the beautiful loving relationship between Robert and Jane, well-played by Clive Brook and Diana Wynyard, at its heart.

Their scenes together are the best in the movie. Early in the story, when Robert is boarding the ship to go to the Boer War, his request for Jane to turn around and keep talking while he walks away to avoid her having to watch was touching. Their final scene together at the end, with quite convincing old-age makeup, also moved me.

I enjoyed the transitional devices used throughout the film, such as the titular medieval cavalcade literally marching through time, the tragic World War I montage, the final montage summarizing the story’s themes, and the very clever “Famous People 1909” sand sculpture at the seaside portraying the important figures of the day, including Edward VII and Theodore Roosevelt.

Although this is a serious story, it is not without moments of Noel Coward’s wit and humor with lines such as, “How rude of the 20th century to wake up the children,” or the scene in which the servants are discussing where Africa is located.

A worthy Best Picture winner that has been unfairly dismissed and deserves a reevaluation.

A weak musical featuring some of the same cast from a vastly superior musical from the year before, Lady Be Good, but lacking a good story. I just couldn’t get into this. I liked Red Skelton in Lady Be Good, but found him annoying here.

Despite its flaws, the Berry Brothers sequences, the first featuring a neat cane routine culminating in their signature jumping and split landing and the second featuring Lena Horne, are bright spots.

Alan Mowbray was amusing as the butler.

The final “The Son of a Gun Who Picks on Uncle Sam” felt shoehorned in. Filled with worthy sentiment and purpose of course, but a forced ending all the same.

A very good film, made contemporary with the war it portrays, with two very different performances at its center. Robert Mitchum projects a commanding voice and presence in an early role and Burgess Meredith’s mild-mannered Ernie Pyle is a wonderful set of “eyes” for the viewer to experience the war firsthand.

William Wellman’s direction and Russell Metty’s cinematography both succeed in capturing the intimate quarters of the soldiers, mostly by frequent use of close-ups, and the immediacy
of the conflict in the battle scenes.

The ongoing struggle throughout the film for Warnicki to fix the phonograph, starting with him receiving a coffee grinder from the villagers when requesting the record player due to a misunderstanding, and culminating in his tragic breakdown after finally hearing the record, was moving.

Some other moments I liked were the scene in which Pyle tries to wake up a soldier he assumes is sleeping, but is told by another soldier that the man is dead, and the scene where the soldier is changing the payroll as a way to show that Murphy died.

It was nice to see Dorothy Wellman, wife of director William Wellman, as the bride of Murphy in this, although uncredited, as I really liked her in Wellman’s earlier film, Wild Boys of the Road, from 1933.

With this plot, I’m not sure it could have ever been a great movie, but I think could have been better without Fontaine. She is lackluster and boring here.

An entertaining MGM musical with catchy songs and outstanding dance numbers featuring Eleanor Powell. The Busby Berkeley-choreographed Fascinating Rhythm sequence is one of the best of any MGM musical and the “Your Words and My Music” number with Powell and Buttons the dog is a delight.

Red Skelton is very funny in his small role, as is Virginia O’Brien in her even smaller role. Her lifeless performance of “Your Words and My Music” made me laugh.

Robert Young may have given one of the more convincing portrayals of a piano player in a film I’ve seen. An actor’s bad piano miming can often detract from a film.

The Berry Brothers’ scenes were fun to watch, as was the entire montage sequence of “Lady Be Good” climbing the charts.

It’s interesting that “The Last Time I Saw Paris” won the Oscar, controversially as it didn’t originate with this film, but I found it to be the least memorable of all the songs in the movie.

A sentimental film with a sweet, lovable portrayal of legendary songwriter Gus Kahn by Danny Thomas and a strong performance by Doris Day.

The latter I specifically liked because other movie musical biographies from this era I have seen tend to limit the musical numbers to only diegetic performances of the songs, not spontaneous musical numbers as typically seen in other non-biographical musicals. The same element was seen in the two scenes with Gus, Grace, and their kids walking along singing as a family.

It’s interesting that “Love Me or Leave Me” is featured in this as Doris Day would later play Ruth Etting in another good film, Love Me or Leave Me, with James Cagney.

It is always nice to see a film from the CinemaScope era that actually used the format to its advantage. The wintry landscape and the later cattle drive sequence really help to open this Western up and expand beyond what would have been an average Academy ratio film only a year or two earlier.

It is also pleasing that Raoul Walsh, a widescreen pioneer from his 1930 film The Big Trail, was still around 25 years later to be able to witness and benefit from the rise of CinemaScope as a successful widescreen format.

The film has a good balance between a lighthearted tone and occasional seriousness, and there are some funny bits in this, such as the scene in which the hotel desk clerk watches Jane Russell’s character take her boots off.

Despite his war experience aging him significantly, Clark Gable still possessed that roguish charm that made him popular in his work from the 30s.

An interesting bit of trivia: Henry Allen, the author of the novel on which this is based, started out as a writer for MGM animated shorts with Harman and Ising and the legendary Tex Avery. He later worked with Walter Lantz on Woody Woodpecker shorts.

Although it may have a laughably flimsy plot, the film features fun musical numbers, particularly those with Doris Day and Gene Nelson (the second most entertaining dancer in classic Hollywood named Gene) such as “I Like the Way You Say Goodnight”, and some amusing scenes between S.Z. Sakall and Florence Bates.

Regarding Sakall, it’s interesting that a reporter in the movie refers to him at one point as “Cuddles”, his nickname used internally at Warner Bros.

Billy De Wolfe gives a funny ing performance, similar to his previous role in Tea for Two.

The titular number, starting with Doris Day as a seemingly disembodied head on a black background and expanding into a stage-filling spectacle, is the promise of the film and didn’t disappoint.

Despite its short runtime, this has an unnecessarily convoluted plot and it seemed that very little of it actually had to do with “Jimmy” becoming a “Gent”.

Still, there’s some good rapid-fire dialogue between Davis and Cagney and interesting uses of whip pans that help to pick up the pace.

It’s always nice to see Cagney get to show off his hoofing skills.

A decent story with not enough Doris Day, but this does feature some great dancing by Gene Nelson in his solo tap dance number and in “The Toy Trumpet” sequence.

This has some awkward transitions into the musical numbers, a common flaw in many musicals of the period.

Some highlights include a scene in which Cagney speaks French and the “Brooklyn” number near the end of the film.

A cute Warner Bros musical with a funny performance by Ray Bolger, an actor who is justifiably ed for playing the Scarecrow in The Wizard of Oz, but deserves recognition for other fine outings in films such as this. His dance number with portraits of Washington and Lincoln is a highlight.

This also features some amusing satirical jabs at bureaucracy and the political establishment.

Claude Dauphin is quite funny in his role as Philippe.

While the funniest scenes occur before the story moves to Paris, the scene in which Philippe takes Ethel around Paris with bad weather made me laugh.

Doris Day, as always, is a beam of joyful sunshine.

Alexander Payne is one of the best currently-working directors at observing the smallest moments in a story and letting actors portray a stillness too seldom seen in other films.

He also always (at least in the films I’ve seen) manages to inject such specificity in the setting  of his films, whether it’s Hawaii as portrayed in this, Napa Valley in Sideways, or the wintry New England boarding school in The Holdovers.

I’m not typically a fan of George Clooney, but I enjoyed his performance in this, particularly in his scenes with Shailene Woodley.

A fun film with the great pairing of MacMurray and Colbert and strong direction by Mitchell Leisen, particularly the inventive dream sequence early in the film. Some of my other favorite moments were the scene of the waiter advising the characters to leave the fancy restaurant, the photo shoot with the male model, and the delightful ending.

I’m also a sucker for a clever title sequence that tries to do something different, so I enjoyed the credits displayed as developing photographs in the darkroom.

A pleasant comedy with some interesting settings in the first act, such as a packed subway car, a roller coaster, and a crowded beach, as well as good performances by Claudette Colbert, Ray Milland, and Fred MacMurray, particularly the latter in one of his first leading roles.

I was expecting something more light and frothy, but this is actually quite somber at times and not very fun. Interestingly, the funniest parts of the film occur before the actual farce gets underway on the ocean liner, such as the Woody Allen cameo, the theater scene introducing Alfred Molina’s character, and the very funny bakery scene. Once the plot on the ship starts, the film deflated a bit, but was still an entertaining throwback to screwball comedy.

The closing dance number was unnecessary and silly and probably should have been cut, just like the thankfully cut original closing scene of Young Frankenstein where Mel Brooks wanted the cast to be singing past the camera as they went through the castle foyer.

Tucci and Platt are very funny in their roles, as are Alfred Molina and Campbell Scott.

The anachronistic ideas, such as the shopping mall, newspapers, and the music, don’t really work and there’s some pretty unimpressive performances here, particularly from Hugh Dancy and Minnie Driver, but the film has some charm thanks to Anne Hathaway.

A very well-crafted and well-acted film, but I also felt that David Hare’s screenplay oversimplified and emotionally over-manipulated some of the more interestingly subtle aspects of Michael Cunningham’s great novel.

I also found Nicole Kidman’s performance to be the least interesting of the three women, despite her winning an Oscar. Julianne Moore was the best of the three, even though her character was my least favorite when reading the novel. That speaks to the strength of her performance.

Clever, well-written, and very well-performed by John Heard in particular, this also has a unique setting in Salt Lake City and a nice, catchy score by Ken Lauber.
