Sometimes I listen to podcasts about internet stuff because I know so little about what is happening culture wise on there. It can be really interesting to me. This was kind of my same idea. I think I would have fared better if I knew a little bit more about things (polotics, world events, and internet culture) going into watching this. It feels like when parents watch a doc or talk show about something street culture related and they think they are down and can therefore accurately judge and critique. But they really only have a very very peripheral understanding and in turn no understanding at all. That's how I feel after watching this. Maybe it's best I just stay in my lane. I have no idea what's going on, My G.

Lots of cool visuals and trippy scenes. Some great gory violent deaths. I originally watched this because it was cut up to make a fan video for an Orange Goblin song. And the video rules. The movie was good, but I actually think the fan video might be better and all that you really need to watch. Mads Mikkelsen is great and Refn’s direction is colorful and interesting. No Way Out-1950 Sidney Poitier plays a doctor trying to save a man who was shot. But eventually he dies and it results in a race riot. The version I watched of this censored the offensive language from the bigots. Which I think was in poor taste as reading between the lines of what was being said, it was so ugly, it added to your loathing and understanding. Heavy imagining this scenario happening and being the doctor in that situation where you can’t just think about your work, you have to think about how prejudiced society will react to what you are doing. As I am sure many Drs. have had to live through. But I hadn’t really thought about what that particular scenario would be like. Pretty well done, Poitier is always great, some of the other actors could step up a bit more.

Glass Onion-2022 kind of a part two for knives out in that it follows the detective from the first one, but that is the only connection. A whodunnit that takes place during the pandemic centering around an Elon Musk type and his group of friends. There's a fun Gordian knot moment with Janelle Monae’s character just smashing to an answer instead of wasting time solving a puzzle. I like these movies because 1. They are beautifully designed. The set and costumes are always extremely thought out and designed. 2. It's a good twisty detective story. 3. It's an ensemble cast who appear to be having fun with it and that definitely reads across the screen. This is nothing blowing your mind but still a light, easy enjoyable watch.

Story is about an eccentric aunt who inherits her nephew after her brother dies. But more than that it is the story of her striving to not raise him into a yuppie pod person. Constantly battling against the bank and new englanders who want to turn him into a “top drawer” rich jerk. She wants him to appreciate the beauty in life. Feels incredibly ahead of its time and easily could have been made during the Reagan era or right now. Has a lot to say but is still light and easy to watch like a Broadway show. Beggars of Life-1928 A farmer looking for sex adopts a girl (Louise Brooks) and gets to “pawing” at her. After killing him, she finds herself hopping freight trains with a hobo headed to Canada. He seems pretty righteous and gets to taking care of her. Starting with dressing her up like a boy. Every cop in the area is after them and hot on her trail. They wind up with a group of hobos who insist on keeping Brooks around with the intention of turning her into their gang rape fun girl. It’s disturbing how the leader of that gang is so diabolical and rapey then turns out to not be that bad of a guy? Hey-raping a minor is no big deal. A man has his needs. Brooks is excellent and does not ham it up too much like many silent film actors. Pretty good little adventure-ish tale with a feeling of urgency and dread throughout. Some of the plot points are so heavy but treated kind of lightly. Overall I enjoyed this quite a bit. Apparently the train wreck in the movie was real and the wreckage is still there. Some beautiful poetic quotes like the namesake: Ain't it funny when you think of the millions o' people in warm houses and feather beds, an' us just driftin' 'round like the clouds? But I guess it's about even when you boil it down. Even them people in feather beds ain't satisfied - we're all beggars of life.

Red Rooms-2023 Yeah I really dug this. Not sure how I was supposed to feel by the end. In some ways you could look at it like this girl was doing all of this to try and really catch this guy. With the exception of the selfie she took in the dead girl’s room. On the other more likely hand you can look at it like this girl is insane obsessed and left the video of the youngest girl being killed at the mother’s house to fuck with her. But it doesn’t explain sending the bitcoin trail to the prosecution. A super weird examination at obsessive crazy chick characteristics. I guess not all of it makes a ton of sense. Either way, extremely well done, creepy and had you believing the atrocities committed were too horrific to even show in this movie. What you don’t see really is scarier than what you do. I went for a run after watching this and actually didn’t bring my headphones so I could spend the time just thinking about what I had just seen. Yeah, this was pretty excellent.

Ladies of Leisure-1930 Stanwyck’s first team up with Frank Capra. She plays a “paid party girl” who falls for a super wealthy painter. Shocker, his family doesn’t approve. Lots of downer moments that aren’t treated like that big of a deal. The film starts with Stanwyck meeting her rich beau after leaving a gangster’s boat party-her face streaked with tears and she’s clearly leaving in a big hurry. They never come out and call her a hooker but you get the picture. It’s definitely pretty heavy at times but still is a light hearted lil rags to riches love story? What can I say, even this early on Stany’s got the chops to pull this all off.
*after writing this I searched our messages and found your review. I feel like they really could have leaned into all of the despair and hopelessness of Stanwyck’s character more. Like realizing she’s just a hooker and will never be able to have a decent man and jumping to her death off of the boat. But no, instead that’s just washed over because her rich boyfriend is at her bedside when she wakes up. It’s all pretty tragic and sad. Also that wealthy artist guy is a fucking herb. Like everything is shot upside down for way way too long. It’s actually annoying. And look, I’ve done a lot of acid, some parts tracked but others were just so stupid and ridiculous. Speaking of ridiculous, let's talk about French dancing. No. just no. I don’t know, they all just seemed kinda lame and corny. Like they all are suffering so hard together, there's no energy left for fighting amongst themselves. Some really powerful scenes that do a great job showing the hopelessness felt by all of the men across all of their races, when typically in jail they would be segregated. When her husband dies, she does what she needs to, to keep the farm alive. Thankfully her quick thinking and work hard attitude brings her out on top. When her son wants to abandon beauty and art for a life as a yuppie stock market schmuck, Stanwyck is beside herself. Thankfully her “so big” son meets Bette Davis who shares his mother's love for beauty and disdain for soulless yuppie turds. While we get these two powerhouse actresses on the same screen, I don't believe that they actually interact in this movie. Still I really enjoyed the story, message and acting.

Naturally that leads to him getting possessed by some old street dude with an axe to grind with the local preacher (played by Lou Gossett sans JR at the time). This is notable for all of the flashback tripping out scenes showing super gory butcher montages that seem borderline arty. That's kind of a stretch but they look like something that would be in a more modern self conscious horror movie not a 70’s blaxploitation flick. There's also a scene where possessed Isaac beats up his girlfriend and to console him, his friend is like man sometimes you've gotta hit
your woman, they like and need it. That was obviously a bit cringey but felt kinda funny like I can't believe they wrote this shit into this movie. The story is a little jumbley but overall I enjoyed this. Maybe it was just the super gay hot guys in short shorts football scene.

The Wrong Man-1956 Hitchcock directs Henry Fonda in this true story of a family man falsely accused of armed robbery and what that does to his family and life. Not your typical Hitchcock story but definitely a Hitchcock film. Expertly laid out with incredible attention to detail. Fonda is always amazing and delivers here. An excellent portrayal of the feelings of helplessness and slow build of dread as reality sets in felt very authentic. Very well done, but kinda stressed me out and made me anxious. Not in an enjoyable way.

He is so capable of making something funny and silly all the while dark and depressing. It’s incredible. I didn’t pick up that was Buster Keaton playing cards at her house until this time around. Bow uses her wacky “It” charms to woo the man even though she is not in his social standing. Pretty light hearted love story that I surprisingly was super sucked into and ended up enjoying and thinking about for a few days after watching. I really enjoyed this. Executive Suite-1954 Barbara Stanwyck and Shelley Winters in a movie together sounds like a match made in heaven for Janis. The cast is STACKED. Apparently so much so that they had to cut corners everywhere else. Like instead of a score they just used sounds from the city in the background. It all works out fine and doesn’t feel cheap. This is the story of what happens inside a large corporation when the head honcho dies and there is an internal power struggle to find the leader. I sort of struggled with the story a bit because I just don’t really care about corporate life. Naturally the acting all across the board is top goddamn notch. But the cast is SO grand that everyone has relatively small roles. Worth watching for the acting, but I just didn’t really dig the movie itself that much.

I appreciated the kindness and comion Withers gave to a woman who was maybe a little loose with her virtues. No big deal though, I could follow without a problem. Super campy 1970’s modern vampire movie with genuinely funny parts plus some belly dancers and a couple of pretty funky break filled tracks. Shot in the underground part of the city of seattle and looked genuinely creepy. But the warden and inmates are in for a surprise, because this is no average criminal, this is a badass secret agent! And let me tell you, he takes no time flexing his fighting skills. Throw in some prison torture scenes with really intersting music choices like steel drum island music or upbeat rockabilly? I don’t know the soundtrack rules actually. Next thing you know some prisoners get sold to these dudes paying big money to hunt humans in the jungle-no doubt. This is not the best of these genres I’ve seen but I did really enjoy it. Fight scenes were decent, the location was great, and some cool shots. A little cheesy, sure, but I liked it. My only real gripe would be the subtitles were not that great. There were lots of language changes that were a little confusing to follow but all in all, the plot wasn’t that deep so it was fine.

Dishonored Lady-1947 Hedy Lamarr plays a woman at the top of the design department of a big magazine. She likes to spend time with a number of men (read high body count) and everyone hates her for it. Except all of the men who are under her spell. This drives Lamarr to attempt suicide by crashing her car into (very fortunately) a psychiatrist’s house. He soon starts treating her and is basically like “abandon your old slutty life, take on a new identity, and try to be a proper lady”. So she does, only to fall in love with her downstairs neighbor and work partner. But she abstains from sex the way a good girl should. So naturally she falls in love with him. When she gets tangled up in a murder and her past comes to light, the new relationship is put to the test. I liked her better when she was galavanting around town, drinking and belittling the men who would aggressively hit on her. Hedy is stunning as always. But the movie was just okay. Kind of felt like this whole thing was a warning to women not to get around or have a career. I’m good without that lecture-thanks.

The cinematography is actually pretty good, the acting is decent enough and the costume design is great! Hundra’s feminist tribe gets killed by these brutes in horn helmets. It’s up to her to repopulate her tribe and spread their feminist ideals. After some questing she finds the perfect dude but when she tries to rape him, he can’t get it up because she’s too butch (which makes no damn sense, she straight up looks like a Frazetta painting but whatever) which leads us to a barbarian make over scene!
