Source Code is the movie that kicked off the surge of sci-fi action films using the Groundhog Day formula. Funnily enough I groan everytime I hear about one being made, but out of the ones I've seen, they tend to be pretty damn good. Source Code very smartly keeps a formula that's easy to get tired and repetitive by nature super tight and very concise in it's story telling. Jake Gyllenhaal and Michelle Monaghan have an easygoing charisma together that helps offset and still complements the pressure cooker intensity of the film.
It's a Duncan Jones flick so it's definitely heavy on the hard science fiction influence. Captain Colter's set up feels very heavily drawn from Philip K. Dick's Ubik. I know the idea that Colter taking over/being stuck as Sean Fentress doesn't quite gel with people and yeah it's a bit iffy, but it's the kind of writing that harkens back the era PKD was writing during, where murky shit like this constituted a super happy ending.
Jones had hit two in a row, while I like his latter two films, there's definitely a sense the guy is missed potential, I still think he's got that epic science fiction masterpiece in him. Hopefully Rogue Trooper is it.
