Godzilla vs. Kong

2021

★★★★

Make no mistake this movie is an absolute blast. For better or worse this movie is less committed with building on the franchise mythology the previous three films so intricately delved into and more concerned with lizard man punching big monke. The action here is spectacular, every fight between Kong and G is shot crisp, clean and very colourfully, the whole movie is a visual feast, the Tron like neon fluorescent lighting adds an almost living Jack Kirby by way of an anime vibe. The Monsterverse has to be one of the most consistently visually gorgeous franchises outside of Star Wars.

The film definitely feels like it's been gutted down for time, Godzilla is barely a character in the film, just randomly appearing at various points in the movie to throw down with Kong. A more accurate title is probably Kong 2, since the majority of the film is about introducing Kong into the modern Monsterverse narrative. That and finally seeing the hollow Earth the films have been teasing, we don't explore all of it, but what we do see is fascinating and hopefully future projects show us more of it.

The human stuff is the least necessary out of any of these movies, it even gets actively annoying with Julian Dennison and Bryan Tyree Henry's interplay, which will have people begging Aaron Taylor Johnson's forgiveness and wanting his quiet sullen performance from the 2014 film back.

Sure no one is going to come to this for the human stuff, and yeah, don't worry about it, the monster carnage is absolutely glorious.
