This is my #1. No doubt. Like, the last hour of this is the best thing I've ever seen!
My previous review sums it all up:
CONTAINS HEAVY SPOILERS!!!
Okay, so I wanna get this out of the way first. My audience in the theater was really annoying. Constant phone notifications and stuff, I got distracted more than a few times. But it is the way it is, and I can't do anything about it.
The first Dune movie is still in my 100 favorite movies. When I first watched it, I liked it, but on a few rewatches, I came around to absolutely loving it, And I think the same is happening with this one. I can see this being #1 on a rewatch.
The thing I loved most about the first, is what I love the most here. And that is the useage of scale. The 2 Dune films do it so well, with 2 doing it better than 1, in my opinion. I absolutely love how the scale is filmed. Most of the movie is happening in dunes, obviously. So you really need interesting foreground, with a dull and plain background, being the dunes. And this film does a great job at making what's happening in the foreground interesting. In this movie they use the sandworms a lot for that (I'm gonna say more about them later in this review). They also use depth and layers a lot. There is one thing in the foreground, like one of those sandworm summoning device things or a character. Then there is one thing behind that, like a ship or a sandworm. And then behind that, there is the background, often being the dunes.
That structure is so good. It fits the movie well and it completes every shot. If any other director directed this film, I'm almost certain that they didn't film the sequences as interesting as Villeneuve. Denis his directing is incredible, as you expect of course.
The characters changed up a little in this one. Obviously, Oscar Isaac his character died in the first movie. Mamoa isn't present, and for most of the movie Brolin and Ferguson are not there either. Instead, Dune: Part 2 focuses on Zendaya, Javier Bardem and other characters way more, with Chalamet being the main. And talking about the characters, I loved every single person in here. I didn't say this a whole lot, but I've never really liked Zendaya much. In this, she really did a great job as Chani. She played a very memorable character. While often being sweet, she can be mysterious and serious as well. I really liked this character a lot. But easily stealing the show in the movie was Chalamet. And it was not even close. His performance is incredible. His character is beautifully written. He is that guy. He is the messiah. Lisan Al Gaib baby!!
I have to say, there were a few weird characters in this tho. I don't really mind it, but it was very odd. Florence Pugh especially. I mean they could've hired any other actress for that roll. She was a very small part of the film and didn't do anything. And again, it feels like Bautista is doing nothing here. He just walks around and could've easily been left out of the movie.
Austin Butler is new in this, and he is coooold as fuck. I don't completely love the casting, but I think this is such an incredible character. I would've liked to see Bill Skarsgard better as little creepy white alien bro. But Butler definitly serves (see what I did there 🤣). His performance is terrifying. The things he does are horrible but make him such a great villain. The ending fight with him and Paul is great! Austin Butler definitly goes in the books as one of my favorite villains. Loved him!!! Also, why was Anya Taylor-Joy in this? I am not mad about it at all, it's actually really nice to see her again! She is an amazing actress.
One issue I do have, which I think is gonna be gone with a rewatch, is the pacing. I found the first and third act very fast, and the second act really slow. There is so much happening in the first and third act. But not much in the second for some reason. Aside from Butler's character being introduced. That is one of the best sequences in the movie. The black-white world with the sun and the ink splatters looks like a fucking anime. It's beautiful and works so well with the battle between some prisoners and Butler.
My favorite sequence in the entire movie is near the beginning where Paul needs to travel with a sandworm. The cinematography, music and visuals are way to damn good there. And then the people being like yay and woohoo because he succeeded is so nice. A big W, not just for Paul, but for the movie. It's actually on youtube as well!!
The budget of the film is not wasted. The movie looks incredible and I think more movies should learn. ESPECIALLY DISNEY!!! It looks incredible in every single shot. This may be the best looking film ever, seriously! And then the AI thing. I don't care. If you don't know, the eyes were made blue via AI. It's such a small point of the film and it shouldn't have negative impact to people in any way.
So uhhh yeah Dune: Part 2 is one of the best things ever. Whatever this movie throws at you, is incredible. Beautiful shots. The gorgeous landscape. Incredible performances. Incredible characters. Writing that's turned up to eleven. Directing by Villeneuve. The editing. The fucking sound!! My seat in the theater was vibrating every single second!! The VPS (vibrating per second) was high lmfao.
