I guess many people consider this movie a litmus or perhaps literacy test. I think that's pretty unfair but it is absolutely true that what the viewer fixates on, agrees or disagrees with, etc. regarding this movie can say a lot about them, especially politically. I am usually quite fond of these sort of panic-attack setpiece fests and this movie is aesthetically no exception - no doubt it is incredibly cathartic and well paced, and I really enjoyed the way the A and B plots intertwine. Bill's cause almost immediately escalates Pendergast's effect and vice-versa.

People have issues with Bill. I don't, really. He seems to be the source of much division between those who love or loathe this movie. I thought his position was ham fisted and tedious like all of the politics in this movie but in a way that really drives the chaos and escalation, so I like him quite a bit and I wouldn't have liked to see his voice reduced to metaphors. He works best when he's shouting his ideals at people just trying to get by or relax. I cannot agree with the scenes that seemingly beg the viewer to sympathize for him but I think they're a welcome tonal shift regardless.

What disturbs me more is Pendergast's arc, punctuated by him telling his wife (who in retrospect seemed to be set up for viewers to hate) to shut up while he's working and have dinner hot and ready for him by the time he's home. Barbara seems pretty amused by this and I imagine the scene immediately after where he punches his dumbass yuppie coworker was meant to be cathartic for us too - he's been such a dick this whole time! But all this seems strange to me, because it's as if the narrative WANTS him to be worse, or perhaps doesn't see his particularly narcissistic and violent actions as bad, and it just comes off as half-hearted. In what I can only assume is an attempt at a more "human" deuteragonist, Pendergast actually makes the film feel much more braindead, masculine and violent than the comically evil Bill.

I haven't read any of the reviews on this site for this movie but I take it that, when people discuss the division between viewers, they're mostly talking about Bill. I think focusing on Bill as the source of any particular social or political commentary is valid but also misses the bigger picture, there's just as much to critique in regards to Pendergast and others. Still, a very fun watch and actually more ambitious than I was expecting. I think it'll stick with me for a while.

The Christmas Light 4n1v4e 1995 - ½ https://letterboxd.sitesdebloques.org/ntrishot/film/the-christmas-light/ letterboxd-review-133500228 Fri, 13 Nov 2020 16:13:57 +1300 2020-11-12 No The Christmas Light 1995 0.5 494902 <![CDATA[

People simply project this idea that this film wants to be deep so either they themselves feel like they're smart or they can make fun of people who think they are. Either way, both parties come out shallow and can't fathom a simple film about fate.

Films, like any form of art, should be allowed to challenge the consumer. Films should be allowed to break down cliches, and destroy formulas that are comfortable to the masses. Many film directors have rebuilt tried and true concepts to shake the industry. Many films have gone on to revolutionize techniques, themes, character progression, writing, dialogue, anything that makes a film stand out. I'm stating all of these obvious things because, unfortunately, The Christmas Light does nothing.

The man who directed and wrote this so-called "masterpiece" is Michael DeVitto. I have little to say of his success, as his creation has given me nothing but disdain for not only animated films, but Christmas itself. You are so evil, Michael DeVitto:

He is everything art should not be, he mutilates my soul, and is a con artist of the spirit. In every regard of his own being, he strives to ruse the people around him. That would be the only respectable thing about him assuming he did it well, but he is too foolish to actually come out of left field so what you end up with is pandered garbage thinking its a "cute Christmas movie". By and and large, this has an adverse cultural effect bleeding into the subconscious of the masses, the idiots who have never had a critical thought in their lives are suddenly shaken and having inspiration based in a con artist's fantasy world.

When people start deluding themselves into thinking Michael DeVitto is "fine", what they are really doing is turning a blind eye to the all consuming cancerous form robotic, homogeneous and ultimately inhuman art, the deep flaws of Michael DeVitto's inadvertent narcissism echo from Facebook to the homes of up-and-coming-to-be's and rots their brains.

In effect, Michael DeVitto is not a bad director, but he is bad direction itself, retching itself from the depths of privileged ignorance and grasping its meaty claws on already explored territory. It acts as a copy of a copy of a copy's copy. There is no therapeutic effect in his work as it worsens the mental state of any being exposed to it.

This is the same culture you see in memes, regurgitated ideas only existing to further the string-pulling morons who got lucky enough to be carried to the top by the mouth-breathing masses. These people, in reference to his audience, are completely unaware of their sacrifice of self by consuming his literal poisonous ideas. "I have 3D animation programs and what Christmas is" culture is the most mundane and unimpressive claim to fame, yet here we are.

Disgusting "nostalgia", horrendous animation, ME ME ME ME ME, the end. That's the format of this disgusting abomination Michael DeVitto has made. Not once has he challenged himself or his audience, while somehow remaining true to no one. He is disgusting and his fanbase is disgusting for thinking his art is intelligent. I have seen countless dimwits call him a genuine genius. Those are people who exist as a result of the exploitative nature of Michael DeVitto; a con artist and nothing but.

I despise Michael DeVitto and "Christmas spirit" and shitty animation so much, and I cannot believe I'm living in a timeline where I have lost real friends over this; I cannot believe I am living in a timeline where Michael DeVitto's inexcusably shitty art is cutting into my real life relationships that took years to develop.

He is an energy sucker and a clickbaiter's wet dream, I hate him, I hate him, I hate him. I have dreams wherein I am kicking in his teeth and nightmares where he never gets held able for being the degenerate he is. If I was in the two bullet scenario with Michael DeVitto, I would shoot him and then myself for have ever having been in a room with him. Kids get fucking bullied for being genuinely interesting; Then those bullies grow up, watch The Christmas Light and are like "Hmm, I'm such a unique guy, I like Christmas movies."

I can't even close this rant. My burning hate ends when Michael DeVitto stops deceiving the masses or fucking dies, I want to do the final knuckle sandwich that literally just booms so hard it ends idiot Christmas """spirit""" forever. He is a bottom feeder living off of the excess ideas that decent creators are too smart to put out.

In a physical sense, he is a spiritual toilet, flushing away shitty thoughts from the higher dimensions and putting them into our garbage fire earth. My end goal is, eventually, thinking about this movie makes me angry enough even Michael DeVitto can't make his videos without thinking about how much he is directly affecting me.
