MUSIC DOCS ARE BACK !!!
I love music docs
This was very good.
Probably 4 stars, but I'm pretty sleepy. I ate 6 tacos today.

I met Herman Li, the guitarist from the metal band Dragon Force at this gig in a haunted mansion for a video game demo release party based on a f*cked up version Pinocchio (from what I understand) for a bunch of video game influencers (??) I played piano at this event. THAT WAS TODAY. One of the most metal days of my life.

This movie contains themes of ion, and toiling in obscurity. AND (from what I understand) this documentary was popular and put the band (Anvil) back on the map, which is a beautiful thing!

Thank you movies, thank you music.
I am enjoying being alive.
Just wish I had some chocolate.

Basically I stayed up later than normal to finish this. THAT'S how you know you are enjoying a comedy troupe documentary. Growing up as a young comedy fan- I felt like I kind of missed The Kids in the Hall. I laughing with my brother during a head crusher sketch. They played reruns on the show on Comedy Central. But I was more drawn to SNL reruns, Monty Python, The Simpsons, Steve Martin...

NOW I feel like I get it. Likening KITH to a punk band I have to say is... very cool to me!!

And I thought this doc was great. They had remarkable footage to work with. And to navigate all the tension- the fights- the ups and downs inevitable in a punk band or a comedy troupe- I found to be very compelling. It felt very honest. Concise. Electric!

Long live the intersection of music aesthetic and sketch comedy.

Excellent!
Beautifully rendered.
I feel like I know Wayne after watching this.
Like first name basis kind of stuff.
What a beautiful soul.

Not all of his music is for me, but I feel like all of his spirit is for me.
Perhaps as I mature and get more grays in my stubble I will appreciate more adventurous jazz, but for now I really mess with "Night Dreamer" and "Ponta de Areia". RECENTLY I have become super into his 1985 album "Atlantis" which didn't even get mentioned in this documentary.
It sounds like hi fidelity N64 music. It's f*cking tight.

Anyhow. I feel like this one really did the artist justice and that is a beautiful thing. Thank you for capturing some of his beauty and sharing it with us.

Saw this at the Egyptian last night as a double feature (paired with "The Thin Blue Line") and director Errol Morris Q&A in between. Such a treat! Errol Morris said he did one movie where everyone was dumber than him (The Thin Blue Line) and then one where everyone was smarter (A Brief History of Time). That's fun!

I ended up kind of LOVING this movie. Stephen Hawking - fascinating life. Black Holes- okay I am starting to understand these now and that is also fascinating. But I Love the genre of this!! Science genre. Film grain. (This was 35mm) Philip Glass doing space music. Gorgeous visuals. Beautiful pictures of the universe and Leonardo flying machine type images. Kind of awe inspiring. And kind of funny. Let's that I like this type of thing.

I got to see director Errol Morris do a Q&A at the Egyptian last night!
I can tell I MESS with this guy. I thought I might after seeing
"Vernon, Florida". He is very bright, funny, and sardonic.
To hear him talk about the process- forming relationships with people in the film was fascinating. AND the film is the reason the case was overturned and got someone off life in prison. Isn't that something??

Footage of an incredibly charming psychopath (in this case David Ray Harris) is always very compelling for me. Freaky, though it may be.

It was a treat to hear a MASTER speak at a beautiful theatre with comfortable green seats.

This review may contain spoilers.

Why do I watch this again?
Because like the interviewees in this film, I too am obsessed with the Great American Rock Band called "The Replacements". I listen to people talk about this band and think- oh my god. Maybe THIS is my community. This is the island of outsiders I've been searching for my whole life. "Nowhere, that's my home". And Replacements fans are my people.

I love the enthusiasm captured here. It's infectious. I like the hot takes. I like that the first time I watched this I was raising an eyebrow about how much everyone loved the first record. I couldn't get into it. But since then I have connected with Punk Rock, and now I'm IN. Now I'm in for the whole ride. From "Sorry, Ma" to Paul Westerberg's solo output.

I started re-watching this and thought- oh- maybe this documentary isn't very good. The lighting was "bad" and I ed there was no Replacements music or footage in the film. It's basically the story of the band told from a smattering of fans talking to camera. But what makes this documentary so special to me is that it's kind of really ABOUT the fans. It is very moving to me to hear fans talk about connecting to this music so deeply when they were growing up and finding identity and a much needed refuge there.

One fan posits that despite what people say- the Replacements WERE ambitious. Just not in the usual way we think of. But they were emotionally ambitious. What a beautiful idea!

This is not the best music documentary ever made (I still can't believe how good that BeeGees doc was) but I've never seen a doc like this one. It's scrappy, and it's got a lot of HEART. And I'll probably watch it again in a few years.

I hope you have a band or a music or a thing that makes you feel like the Replacements make me feel.

There is a shortage of funny funny movies being made today.

Last night I heard Writer/Director Andrew DeYoung say "The King of Comedy" was very influential in the making of "Friendship" and I thought OHHH yes that make sense. That movie is a cringe classic! Cut from the same cloth as it were.

My hands are tied!
I have to give this movie 4.5 stars because it made me laugh so many times. I was blessed to watch this on the big screen with a packed house and director Penelope Spheeris in attendance dishing gossip and being not very politically correct before the movie.

I don't think of myself as a fan of this movie, but I guess I AM??
The performances are terrific. The writing is so funny. It's paced so well.
Driving around Chicago, bumping tunes, and talking directly to camera- it all captures this youthful exuberance that feels wholly original (even though Ferris Bueller also did this not 6 years prior??)

I think of Garth as a Halloween costume these days, but that guy was MAKING ME LAUGH. Wowee. So much charisma. Ed O'Neill was so good in this. Everyone was good!!

I must have seen bits and pieces of this on Comedy Central or something growing up as a kid. I didn't realize how influential it was. Sure a handful of gags don't hold up. But as a make-me-laugh vehicle 33 years after its release- this was a triumph!

Vampires are real and I eat a clove of garlic every day to keep those BLOODSUCKERS out of my crawlspace.

I saw this movie with 6 people and I am thrilled to announce I liked it the BEST!! It was a thrill to play around in this gothic wonderland. I am only allowed to see one scary movie a year and this was it. And it was more visually stunning than scary so that is good news.

Because I stayed up very late last night having possibly the most inspired karaoke night of my life, today I indulged in a movie coffee. The nice gal at the concession stands told me to go to Starbucks instead of buying coffee from them because it wasn't "very good". Well I didn't have time to go to Starbucks. The broke and was a whole thing so they ended up comp'ing my disgusting coffee which was awesome.

I saw THREE people I knew from high school and made pleasantries with one of them (shout out to Chelsea). That was nice.

The movie ruled. This is the spoiler: I guess they showed vampire hog in this?? I must have been in the bathroom for that part because I don't that.

I have heart palpitations now because of the coffee- hope I can get some sleep tonight.

This review is to remind me that I like this movie

The greatest fast talking movie of our generation.

So many incredible lines in this. Amazing score.
It's all around such a BIG SWING that just delivers wow.

The last scene starts to play and you say no way is this the last scene already. It flew by so fast and before you know it, John Lennon is singing "Baby You're A Rich Man" to you.
The credits hit. You walk out of the theatre. You leave the movie but the movie doesn't leave you. That's when you realize you just watched...

A FIVE STARS MOVIE!!

Let me be the first one to say that this movie is GREAT!
I watched it on the big screen with an enthusiastic crowd. So many applause breaks! It feels so modern it's astounding. I laughed a lot, but the smile time I logged while watching this?? Off the charts.

I hope to watch this many more times in the future, but for now here is a perfect Steve Martin bit honoring Gene Kelly in 1985

"perhaps the most pictorially beautiful depiction of the Great Plains ever created on film"- June Perry Levine University of Nebraska-Lincoln

I am from the Great Plains, so to see them glow so beautifully in this motion picture did my heart good. Every frame? A PAINTING!! Stunning pastoral golden hues to ease your modern blues.

I'd like to see it again someday.

Closing thoughts:
Popcorn is probably the most famous snack at the movies- However, I drank a Lemon Ginger tea during the film. It went well!
I think I'll do it again sometime.

See you at the movies!!

I find that old movies can fall into the trap of being boring movies, and this was no different!

But also it was good! Movies are awesome.

"Inchworm" song alone was worth price of ission.
"Inchworm" song is INSPIRED and an all time great moment in cinema if you ask me (Nick)

I love the "Inchworm" song

You HAVE to watch this on your birthday!!
I was pleasantly surprised by the humor.
I love laughing at humor and this movie made me laugh a lot of times.
It also made me feel.
Which I don't mind :)

They would have snatched a 4.5 from me if it looked like they were really playing their instruments. That's just how my movie rating system works
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Really good movie!!

To see this on the silver screen made me say wow!
It's not always fun for me to watch because sometimes it depicts hell on earth. But I can't deny that it is "great" !!
Some of these scenes will stick with me forevermore.
It's so ROCK N' ROLL.

Also big ups to H.W. I think he's really gonna turn things around and help curtail Plainview Family generational trauma.

Daniel Day Lewis with an all timer performance.

I went to Universal CityWalk for the first time and parked in the E.T. lot.
That place is crazy!!
I went to the movie and I tried a little bit of the new mean girls glen coco flavored cream soda. It was pretty good.
I wore my purple velour tracksuit which is really good to watch movies in.

Someone sat in my seat during the previews so then I sat somewhere else because everyone would have had to move for me if I would have asked. But then the person that was supposed to sit in my seat arrived so then I got up and told the person in my original seat that they were in my seat and then everyone moved and they said sorry and I said that's okay.

Thanks Godzilla!

That modulation to the chorus is very unusual but everyone is on board!!!

They don't make 'em like this anymore.
Actually this is the only time they ever did!!

I love this movie.
It brought me so much joy to see it on BIG SCREEN.
It made me laugh in a way that nothing else does.

I hope it remains a North Star for me in its boundless creativity, boldness in breaking convention, and also it's a musical that doesn't feel like a musical at all. An incredible feat.

This very good movie blurs the line between fantasy and reality in such a captivating kind of way. It makes me cringe in a way that I like and makes me laugh and ache a little in a way that I like.

Robert De Niro looking at the ceiling for a while and asking if it's cork is ALL TIME CLASSIC MOMENT in cinema history.

This movie is awesome I love it.

This was the first Miyazaki film I saw on the BIG SCREEN.
I loved how big the screen was this time around.

Once Mahito goes into the tower, the movie goes awesome mode and I liked that.

My reclining chair was too comfortable and made me drowsy sometimes, I didn't like that.

I noticed that Mac DeMarco came to this showing of the film which I liked.

I think that was the best movie of 2023 can you believe that?
Poor Things was a wild ride.

But also THIS had my favorite scene also with that scene at the end where they say goodbye do you know the one I am talking about??

I am on a mission to watch movies directed by Nicolas Roeg for reasons I can not discuss right now. My first foray into this avenue just happened in the incredible way of seeing this movie at the theatre.

No offense but I think this movie could be a shorter movie. That's okay! Some amazing things happened in the movie though that left my jaw dropped and feeling agog.

Also what ended up happening was David Bowie's penis was in the movie so I saw that and wasn't expecting that! I asked my friend if they used a penis double, but they replied no and said that the movie is famous for having David Bowie penis.

Thank you for reading my review!
:)
