Criteria for inclusion
1. It's either a Godzilla movie or,
2. It's about a Godzilla kaiju co-star (Mothra, Rodan) or,
3. It's a movie by a Godzilla director that fits the theme of Godzilla or,
4. It's a movie that inspired or is otherwise important to the legacy of Godzilla.
These criteria are pretty nebulous.
I'm not including Shusuke Kaneko's Heisei Gamera trilogy despite those being both the reason Kaneko was able to direct G.M.K. and also obvious influences on G.M.K. (can a director be an influence on himself?) because I feel like adding Gamera movies on here is a slippery slope– If we're throwing the Heisei trilogy on here why not put on the Showa movies as…

(can a director be an influence on himself?) because I feel like adding Gamera movies on here is a slippery slope– If we're throwing the Heisei trilogy on here why not put on the Showa movies as well? There was definitely some inspiration interplay going on in the 70s... And why not just throw on any other kaiju movies that were coming out at the time? etc etc. But I could be persuaded on the Heisei Gameras I guess.
I also could probably be persuaded on Gareth Edwards' Monsters, and maybe if someone had a good pick from Hideaki Anno that's not just The Tv Show Evangelion. These are all things that fit into the list but I left off to avoid bloat-- I think it's more interesting to build this around predominantly pre-Millennium stuff anyway.
Some inclusions I'm not sure about: I haven't seen Ryuhei Kitamura's Versus. Based on what I've seen about it, it seems like an antecedent to Final Wars. But I could be wrong and I'd like a second opinion. Also, I'm not sure about how many of these alternate cuts I should include. Things like the Raymond Burr cut of Godzilla King of the Monsters or Godzilla 1985 seem justified, but does this Godzilla canon really need Cozzilla, or Godzilla le Monstre de L'Océan Pacifique, or Gigantis the Fire Monster?? I don't know.
I just want to build a list of films that I can watch in chronological order and feel like I'm tromping through the entire, exhaustive history of Godzilla, from the first stop-motion dinosaur to walk the silver screen, to the last desaturated CGI Netflix anime pterodactyl.
Update 12/27/24: Added Jurassic Park. Thought about it a lot and I think every Godzilla movie after JP was strongly colored by it enough for it deserve inclusion. Also added DW Griffith’s Brute Force which is I believe the first appearance of a dinosaur in a movie
