A Nice Indian Boy

2024

★★★★½ Liked Watched

Soni and Groff have a meet-cute at a portrait photo shoot and the two soon talk Bollywood obsession, gay marriage, and Indian traditions. The exuberant, feel-good, and genuinely moving, A Nice Indian Boy, features some strong laughs, sincere dialogue, and impossibly charming chemistry between its cross-cultural leads. The film's ing characters have authenticity and additional layers to them that strengthen the film's emotional beats too.

The film spoke to me on both a queer and Indian cultural level. I found…

Saturday Night

2024

★★★★ Watched

Reitman stages a riotous rehearsal for the first ever taping of the renowned sketch show. Saturday Night is a mountain of mayhem with crashing lights, writers wreaking havoc, and talent throwing tantrums. And yet, this is an entertainingly electric watch!

Thematically scrappy, the film has snappy dialogue, the camera breezes through the studio (I always appreciate a tracking shot), and the off-camera humour is a hoot. The sheer naivety and mishaps of Feldman were especially funny. The runaway performances here…

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning

2025

★★½ Watched

Cruise chooses the mission, clings onto planes and plunges into the deep depths. The Final Reckoning is an incredibly somber affair and this franchise finale(?) is short of the winning dynamic pacing, zippy energy, and globe-trotting appeal. Despite a third act that has a truly impressive flipping and gripping aerial set piece (plus a refreshing ensemble-wide costume change), much of what comes before is quite a slog...which I hate to say because I love these movies. Ghost Protocol is easily…

"Have you tried not being a mutant"

A mutant must-see that betters the original, X-Men 2 set the benchmark for superhero movies. This is a blockbuster full of quotable lines ("you should've killed me when you had the chance!"), compelling themes, and strong characterisation within the ensemble. I still can't get enough of Ottman's iconic "Suite from X2".

Nightcrawler, a genuine standout, is a welcome addition to the team - his BAMF-ing visual effects still hold up. At the time…

Freedom Writers

2007

★★★★ 4

It is very easy to disregard Freedom Writers on the grounds of its white saviour narrative, but it would be a shame to overlook this true life tale of a teacher going against bigoted, elitist colleagues in order to fight the corner of a class of underprivileged youths so that they receive a standard of education they’re so cruelly deprived of.

Freedom Writers features a curriculum of moving subjects, prompting a class divided to settle their grievances, find a shared…

Muppets Most Wanted

2014

★★★ 11

Just randomly caught this on the BBC this morning. This film made me recall a previous job that I had at Pinewood Studios where Muppets Most Wanted was shooting at the time. The office I was working in was located right next to the props department where I saw all the unused Muppets hanging on the wall. It looked as if they'd been put down, it was such a haunting sight, although also a reality check that these characters are…
