I used to make long speeches to you after you left. I used to talk to you all the time, even though I was alone. - Jane Henderson

I knew that this rewatch would destroy me. My assumptions were right. By its third and final act, it was if an anvil had been dropped on my upper back, and I guess that’s what finally sealed the deal for me. I’ve always been a big fan about this movie, but now I do highly regard this one, alongside ‘Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind’. There’s such a heavy emotional link here and I can’t simply deny it.

There were definitely points where I found myself reliving fond memories and experiences that had occurred a few months prior. But that’s all what they are now - memories. And that to me, sunk me further into my seat. Out of all the 2.5hr movies that I know, I am always glued to the screen, exactly like my first watch - on a crappy dvd from my uni at home. Frankly, I’ve relived that experience once again. Finding myself navigating both the story and my own emotions attached to it. Very few movies have been able to replicate this feeling, the only one that has is ‘Apocalypse Now’ or ‘Lost in Translation’.

This, to me, is a perfect movie, in many regards. From its technical output that is rarely seen in modern media. To the emotional bond that I have with this story and these characters. It pains me to see and hear of people who’ve never experienced this film, not even watched at home. Maybe the next step is to persuade people to get around watching this movie.

Overall, 10/10.

I'm the motherfucker that found this place. Sir. - Maya

With only 9 people, including myself and my old man, this had to be the quietest 35mm Dendy screenings ever. Maybe it's because this movie is too "Americanised", or really "Patriotic" as a friend mentioned. Whatever the case, I still really enjoyed this movie.

I'm even more glad that I got to watch this again, for a third time, with my dad - for a third time. But, we managed to see this on print with a near peaceful crowd. I full heartedly believe that this movie is a bonding experience between us two. Especially since we're absolutely fascinated with the War on Terror, and "UBL" (if you know, you know what that abbreviation is).

Frankly this is still a really interesting, and fun movie for me. And that I am absolutely glad that I got to finally experience this on print, in a cinema, with the person who first showed me this, all those years ago.

I don't know if I was too tired, or that I had quite a bit to drink, but I kept falling asleep whilst watching this. This being my second time, I always find myself distracted with this movie, and I have no clue why. I want to really appreciate this movie, but I haven't been able to.

The style and themes are similar to Tarkovsky, this is still a good movie. Maybe I need to watch more Bergmann, then return to this after a while. Apart from that, this third movie concludes my accidental triple threat, where all the movies watched revolve around the theme of DEATH.

You keep dancing with the devil... one day he's gonna follow you home. - Jedidiah

Really cool movie. A story both grounded with African American cultures, and a completely new identity seperate from repeated vampire stories. However I think the initial hype of the movie has slowly worn off now. I’ve left it too late and should’ve watched this sooner, to possibly appreciate this further.

Mind you, I was the ONLY person watching this session this morning, so I was truly left alone with how the movie played out. And frankly it felt spiritual to an extent. You really feel connected with whatever movie you watch by yourself inside a cinema. I think this was a great movie for this coincidence to occur.

In saying this, this definitely was a fun movie and experience. I still enjoy vampire movies it seems.

Rewatching this after 3 years or so, and noticed completely new details and quirks with this one. Maybe it’s because I understand film better and Cyberpunk a lil better too. Apart from that, this is a faithful adaptation to the original that I hold near and dear. Finally watching it in a cinema, Golden Age obviously as part of their electric sheep retrospective.

Try the cock, Albert. It's a delicacy, and you know where it's been. - Georgina

I went in blind for this movie, and I reckon that was the best decision I could've made for this. My assumptions about this movie had all been thrown out the window by the time the credits started rolling. At the absolute behest of Aidan, I had to go see this movie for myself. In his words "Gambon pulls the most villainous performance in all of cinema", and that remark is on the money. Rage, degradation, rudeness have been brought to life by this one performance. And it's utterly remarkable and downright shocking at times.

Dame Helen Mirren is great in this as well. Plus the rest of the cast for that matter. But sticking to Dame Mirren, her performance I quite enjoyed, plus her fashion sense is another highlight. Surprisingly I do see slight similarities between her role in this, and her performance in 'Caligula', and that's considering a few other details that I won't make mention.

Speaking of fashion sense... HOLY SHIT this movie is gorgeous. This movie is draped in red in all of its hues. Not to mention the other colours like blue and green, WHICH change alongside costumes like a light switch. The chameleonized costumes and environment is just another highlight and craftsmanship to this movie.

This was a fantastic movie, that all paid off equally throughout the story. Coming from 'Drowning By Numbers', Greenaway is a maestro, who's exacting detail and artistry is at another level.

9 drinks deep, and this was still just as funny, dead-pan and British the last time I’ve watched it almost a year ago now. Lord have mercy this was a really funny movie. So so so many jokes about nearly everything on British Life and Queerness. I’m very glad that I got to watch this on 35mm. Aidan and I ( See what I did there ;) )

Went bar for bar with drinks wounding up to 7 in total, all Jack Daniel’s and Coke. Poor buddy tapped out almost with having water. A disgrace if I might say…. I’m fucking with you 😂. Or am I?……. Kidding kidding. I however, went up to 8-9 standards thanks to a good friend and his stash of a 1/3 of a wine glass. That shit done the trick at the exact right time. God bless cheap whiskey. God bless it all.  What I want now - is more fucking booze. Maybe 4-5 more standards. I want to be looney as all hell. But alas work calls, it calls EARLY. Thus my wish is once again out of the question. Though, I do crave food… I don’t know if I had enough for dinner. But I don’t want to spend more moneys.

I am the punishment of God... If you had not committed great sins, God would not have sent a punishment like me upon you - Genghis Khan

I tried my damn best to stay awake. But alas, my tiredness got the best of me in a chokehold. As such, this needs a desperate rewatch to further appreciate this monolith of a film. The length introduction just before this screening was lengthy and insightful on what happens in the story.

Based on real-life historical events, this movie centres around the Mongol conquest of the Khwarazmian city of Otrar, a trading city in Southern Kazakhstan. The film is split in two parts with the latter being the siege of the city. Which by time and production standards is a feat in filmmaking, reminiscing on 'Andrei Rublev' and 'Lawrence of Arabia' to some degree. On that note, the first half "The Scout", is full of espionage, intrigue, and political mind fields that result in your head being cut off. However, since I fell asleep much of both sides of the movie have been lost, and at times, I had to ask myself "what happened?".

Apart from that, I love the history of this film, Genghis Khan, the Mongols, Nomadic Steppes, and bloody wars are at the forefront here. Now my interest has peaked with this subject. Now I do want to properly learn about Genghis Khan, and Tamerlane. That's the main thing that I wanted to get out of this movie - to reinvigorate my history interest in this point of the world. And that I am glad that the grandness of this movie was fully realised to me. If I hadn't fallen asleep. There would be a good chance that I would give this movie either a 4.5 or full 5 stars here.

I heard the voice of the fourth beast say, 'Come and see.'
And I looked, and behold a pale horse:
And his name that sat on him was Death,
And Hell followed with him. - Chapter 6, Book of Revelations

In all my years of studying history, there is only one film that I consider is the most painful, heart-breaking, sorrow, and accurate representation of any historical fragment. And that my answer will forever be 'Come and See', even more so than 'Apocalypse Now'. Finally watching this in a cinema, the Ritz nonetheless, and even greater/horrific in Screen 1. This being my 3rd viewing, I've still caught onto more small details this time around. But in the end, this felt utterly devastating. Sitting there in silence staring at the end credits, no applause, no noise, no nothing. I guess everyone there was horrified. Rightfully so.

Apart from my experience tonight, this has to be one of the greatest, most in depth films on war that has graced the screen. After reading and studying The Eastern Front, I can safely say this film is the most accurate and profound portrayal of this conflict. Right down to the bare details of what happens in this film, has happened close to 600 plus times throughout the course of the conflict. The pure barbarity and evil nature of the Wehrmacht is in full force here. From the omniscient presence from land and sky and the scorched earth tactics are fully displayed here. Not to mention the final act, with the SS Death Squad acting akin to that of the hordes of Attila the Hun, Genghis Khan, and Tamerlane of the Timurids - watching this band of criminals travel across the countryside, just further reminds me of this comparison.

Witnessing the poverty of Byelorussia under Stalin was also just as devastating. There were slight hints throughout the movie of both De-Kulakization and the Holodomor. Through the small hamlets and the constant need for food/decrepit state of the villagers are some of the signs. With that, the music was included, with legendary Red Army songs such as "Three Tankists" and above all "THE SACRED WAR". Speaking of which, the scene where it includes "The Sacred War" and the "Death" photo has got to be one of my favourite scenes, alongside 'Apocalypse Now' "Head coming out of the water" moment. Both of those scenes, I will highly regard as perfect examples of filmmaking.

Overall, I was very happy to finally watching this in a cinema. At the same time, I was utterly horrified once more.

Overall, 10/10.

Make Italy Great Again - Mussolini

Been eying to watch this for the longest time. Once I learnt that this was on SBS on Demand, I knew exactly that I had to watch this very soon. To which I did. If I didn't have Uni today, I would've watched the last episode last night.

My first introduction of the man and subject was a very brief overview in Modern History at High School. At that point I wanted to learn more on Mussolini and the origins and history of Italian Fascism. For those following years until now, the topic had been at the back of my mind. However, after watching this, my curiosity has now peaked. Especially after reading an introductory book on 'Totalitarianism', and Mussolini's Italy is heavily mentioned within.

The genre-bending antics of this series, including mixed media/footage and the constant 4th wall breaking, just oozes with style. You almost become enthralled and enchanted by the twisted charisma of Mussolini. Definitely at certain points, I honestly felt really pulled with the story, like any other movie or show, almost cheering on these Fascist Bastards. And that honestly scared the living Hell out of me. Especially with my chosen quote which was said by Mussolini in the show, in BROKEN ENGLISH. A direct dig at Trump and his cronies. That moment stunned and blew me away.

However, I don't know how historically accurate this is though. That's my main problem with it. I don't know enough on the topic to give an accurate and definitive review for this, compared to "Come and See", to which I know A LOT (You'll be hearing from me, come this Sunday when I write the review). The only thing I can do, is to read and learn about the subject to truly understand, and to further my knowledge on Mussolini.

Apart from that, this show is a good starting point in learning Italian history from 1918 to 1946. Overall, 8/10

All right men... we're going. But I want you to who you are. You are the 10th Light Horse! Men from Western Australia. Don't forget it. Good luck. - Major Barton

This hit harder than a truck. Having seen this on Anzac Day, no applause or interruptions took place tonight. Hell, myself, Aidan, and Joshua were all practically stunned by the time it finished. To folks watching this outside either Australia or New Zealand, or really anywhere that doesn't commemorate Anzac Day, this movie may be your run of the mill war film. However, to those who do pay tribute to the soldiers, the movie means a great amount.

Having said that, I do wish most of the movie was purely set on the battlefield instead of just 1/3 of it. The other 2/3 is just spent before they get to the fight. Even though it tries to humanise or create character this first 2/3, it could've been done the exact same if the story was centred solely on the battlefield.

The day we stop lookin', Charlie, is the day we die. - Lt. Col. Frank Slade

Finally got around to watching this. I somewhat wish that I wasn't alone for this one. Anyway, you can't have everything that you wish for. This movie was unexpected. I was hoping for more romance, but it's "father-son" type story was just as phenomenal. Definitely one of Pacino's more louder roles but in a good way. My man Pacino has that dawg in him for this movie, even more so than "Heat" to be honest.

With a runtime of 2hrs & 40min, this flew by like you wouldn't believe. Surprisingly it never felt slow, the time was used beautifully and graciously. It feels like a completed story and was very satisfied with how everything turned and/or played out. Had no clue what this movie was like, but bought it. Not on my intuition but on someone else's. Fuck it, I'm strong enough. - Frank

Another Ozploitation for the night. This would go so HARD in a cinema. Just pure fun and 'Mad Max'-esque type antics. Another Aussie movie centred around cars and the AUS car culture. Not as great as 'Metal Skin', nor as horrible as 'Running on Empty'. Very vibrant as well, I guess cause this was made in the 80s, but still, very pastel, very potent.

This movie's strange, much like other Ozploitation movies. However, it's its sudden shift towards racism and immigration caught me really off guard. I didn't really see the need for this at first but thinking of it now, it somewhat makes sense. That being the drive in is like a refugee camp or concentration camp (legit in the synopsis here), and as such is self explanatory. I do wish we got to see more car chases outside the drive-in, however that last final one was pure bliss.

What's even funnier is that this drive in theatre was playing other Ozploitation classics including 'Turkey Shoot', 'The Man From Hong Kong', and 'Snapshot'. I thought it was really funny and meta to do this, especially from an Ozploitation flick. Mind you, I still need to watch the 3 movies I just mentioned.

Another Ozploitation movie. Somewhat underrated and under noticed depending on who you ask. Thankfully this, plus many more Ozploitation movies are on Brollie - The free Umbrella Entertainment streaming service. In of an actual review, this was nice, nothing too extravagant or outlandish. I did enjoy how the role of myth and tribal law was carried out here. Added a sense of cultural appreciation and recognition especially when this was made.

On top of that, the racism in this movie is startling, just the casual racism and dismissal of all the Aboriginal characters here. It sometimes feels like a culture shock, but at the same time still unfortunately familiar, especially in 2025. But again, was very interesting to see the representation and frankly, the appropriated culture, blending Aboriginal, Colonial, and the other one (it's a spoiler, don't question me on this).

I had chance to relive part of my youth. My first thought was then I could make things turnout differently but they turned out the same or not much different. I suddenly realized that even if I was given a second chance I wouldn't need it, I really wouldn't. - N.J.

For a 3hr long movie, this was perfectly paced, using it's time effectively and in meaning. Such a story following at least 5 of the one family seemed daunting at first, however after sitting through this expose and cultural insight - I can say that every member had enough screen time and charisma/personality to fill the screen. This was a surprisingly packed session for the Ritz on a Sunday afternoon. Thought I might try something different and sat right under the projector in Cinema 1. And honestly, the screen felt small like obviously, but watching the audience from the top was interesting. Watching their movements and constant rustling of snacks was different, something new I guess.

Much like 'Silence', this movie is damn quiet. There are more silent moments here than 'Silence'. All the set locations and cinematography looked stunning. The different shades of red here is spectacular. At points, this movie feels like liminal space, just these long takes on both the characters and locations. Especially watching it in a cinema amplified that feeling as well. This was pretty emotional too, I was quite unexpected with the amount of it here. Nonetheless, still enjoyed it and at points definitely had me by a heart string.

We are images, dreams, photographs. We must not stay here. Prisoners! We shall break the illusion. This is Maya! Goodbye to the Holy Mountain. Real life awaits us. - The Alchemist

Welcome back to Stoned Chronicles - The show where the host of the mostest gets blazed like a true mf. On tonight's first episode of 2025 - The Holy Mountain by Alejandro Jodorowsky. This was something else entirely, the visuals, the story, the metaphors, the genre-bending magic tricks, it all seems too wild for the average cinema-goer. Being on weed for this, was the right call. Everything felt amplified, my mind felt calm and awakened. It's near-East philosophies and cultural influences are rampant throughout this movie. A combination of Eastern, Western, European, Latin, and Asian creates the movie's strange and fantastical world.

Other aspects like sound and production design are intricately well-placed and mind-bending. It does not shy away with it's strangeness and apparent mistakes. A reason why this movie seemed to capture my high-self as well as my imagination. Particularly with the ending, and the final line (to which I used for this review), where all the artistry and fantastical elements of the movie seem to perfectly align to the ending, and yet to Jodorowsky's personal philosophy. How have I only just watched this movie? I knew I should've watched more Jodorowsky beforehand. Now I know otherwise.

"I'm doing my part" - "I'm doing my part" - "I'm doing my part" - "I ain't doing FUCKIN' SHIT". If you heard of small voice say that last line, that was me and no I do NOT regret saying it. This is quite a different sci-fi - ultra violent, ultra fascist or authoritarian, and ultra 90s. Even after 28yrs or so, some of those vfx hold out. But God DAMN some of the deaths and kills here are straight up brutal. Like it really had me grossed out at times. In of characters, very laughable and comedic. This movie isn't too too serious like other sci-fi movies of the same vain.

This is a pure movie with the boys kind of film. Some mindless fun and the ultra violence. Another authentic 80s Sci-Fi Horror/Thriller. Definitely feels like a Carpenter movie. Cheesy 80s lines and story structure much like ‘Escape from New York City’ but not as horrific as ‘The Thing’. Was impressed how Nada got armed to the teeth like an absolute badass. Much like the quote I chose for this review. Much like ‘Escape from NYC’ it’s your run of the mill 80s action movie that doesn’t go weird or exceptionally great like ‘Body Double’. Yeah, I like the old Gravediggers. I'd be glad to see them any time. - Stone

Finally getting around to watching this. An Ozploitation-Sydney classic that still very crude, graphic, and rough around the edges. The story, structure, and character's need to be fleshed out more, maybe a longer runtime or slight changes to the story. It was nice seeing the various familiar locations in Sydney through a 1970s lens. I definitely think a few of these places were filmed close to home even.

Watching 'Wake in Fright' and 'Razorback', this is my least favourite of the Ozploitation genre. However, the Motorcycle Funeral procession was spectacular, 400 or so bikers participating in the scene, was shot beautifully. A thing on the Bike-y culture, is how brutal it is. The constant pub fighting, drug use, and dangerous road stunts is in full force here. You definitely feel the speed whilst watching the bike scenes. For a movie that didn't really connect with me a whole lot - it's still a decent Aussie film.

The church is not the past. It is what we do next. - Benitez

Thanks Imogen for the adamant recommendation. Now I understand why you're raving about this movie - it definitely surprised me more than once. With a story centred around the election of a new pope, this movie feels nearly 'Hitchcockian' in of suspense and correctly placed twists and reveals. I thought I was watching a full on political drama like 'All The President's Men' or something.

There's so much red in this, I love it and I don't know exactly why. I guess it's really pleasing to look at it, and not be called a Communist to be frank. This being made by the same director as 'All Quiet on the Western Front' (the 2022 version) - it was cinematographically beautiful, with nearly every shot being calculated. Even more so whilst watching it in a cinema. By God, that ending plus one other moment had me speechless - FOR A MOVIE ABOUT POPES AND SHIT. A really enjoyable thriller in line with Haneke's movies. Very glad that I have this on DVD once again. This definitely had me at the edge of my seat as well as having my jaw on the floor. Definitely a different approach with the whole "snuff" network and the nature of the form. But I should've watched this early as part of my projects. Thankfully now, I can bring these twisted ideas to the development.

Really enjoyable story that slowly revealed who and what is happening in this movie. I liked the backdrop of it being at an actual communication's school and some of the character's having an interest in film, particular Chema and his obsession with obscure graphic horror movies. A side note, this was playing at Dendy's House of Horror Night, and seemed interesting - very glad once again that I got to watch this finally.

You go in, find the President, bring him out in 24 hours, and you're a free man. - Bob Hauk

Your classic sci-fi action movie that hits the spot. John Carpenter does well here in of style, unfortunately not on the same level as ‘The Thing’. In of story and characters, it’s run of the mill textbook screenwriting, with no real experimentation and/or changes. Seeing New York City as a massive prison was interesting, definitely made me thought “damn - close enough to reality”.

Watching it at home was good, nice and relaxing for once. Not having to deal with unruly audiences and the other nit picking that I usually do. It was nice to see Harry Dean Stanton in this, even after ‘Paris Texas’ and ‘Repo Man’. The production design was good - surprisingly it was used for the original ‘Blade Runner’ just painted over. I don’t know what else to say about this movie, I’m glad that I’ve got it on DVD and I own it outright - but it is a good action movie that I’m happy with.

Not as good as “Profondo Rosso” but I think that was because I watched this at home, instead of a cinema. This was really colourful, even more so by today’s standards. As I said before, I craved Argento - however after watching this, I still need more, maybe some more obscure stuff that needs to be put into the spotlight.

In of story, it’s your standard Giallo murder fantasy with witches set in . I did enjoy the Germanic location, especially at one point (that I will not name because it is a spoiler). Thanks guys, ‘Surfing Bird’ is now FUCKING RUINED FOR ME. This was everything and nothing that I had expected. Wearing a full blue suit much in the honour of John Waters - I automatically knew that I was overdoing it. In saying that, I think it was the right call to do so. The crowd was livid throughout this, it was great. For such a grotesque and strange movie, it definitely has its novelties and social commentary.

One thing that I noticed with this movie was how open and free this movie was. Much like a cross between a student project and a low budget near-porno, Pink Flamingos is definitely out of this world in of my tastes. My good friend Aidan was laughing his absolute nut off, at both the movie and my honest reactions to it. When man is happy, the meaning of life and other eternal themes rarely interest him. - Dr Snaut

Dubbed the Russian answer to '2001: A Space Odyssey", now I see and understand why. This being my 3rd Tarkovsky, his style of filmmaking seems so familiar yet foreign to me. The long takes, the philosophical messaging, and the Soviet/Russian Nihilist method of storytelling can be found once again here. Much like 'Ivan's Childhood', and 'Andrei Rublev' (To which I consider this to be one of the most historically accurate movies that I've watched), Solaris attempts to answer what it means to be human, what it means to be alive as well. In doing so, it highlights the dark reaches of the human sub conscience through the planet's "visitors". This being a 1970s sci-fi, it does have its trademark cliches and visual effects that was nice to see, especially from a Soviet perspective.

I guess I need to watch the rest of Tarkovsky's filmography to understand these elements. I do have the Criterion of 'Stalker' - maybe it's time to watch it. Back to Solaris, it also addresses and critiques the scientific/political community of the Soviet Union. Particularly with scenes including Henri Burton and his findings during his time on Solaris highlight how dismissive the higher-ups were towards his findings. On top of that, the overarching sense of being either moral or immoral with science closely links with this idea. Especially with its commentary on using radiation on the alien world, much like using Nuclear Weapons here on Earth. These two aspects create a message that critiques the attitude of the Upper-Echelon Soviet Union concerning the Communist Party and the scientific organisations related. In a way, unlike '2001', Solaris attempts and succeeds in becoming a near political piece that also addresses the human condition with some slight government censorship here and there.

As previously mentioned, Solaris has a weird sci-fi style that I haven't really come across. It's production design is familiar yet different from that of 'Star Wars', or even '2001'. It's near abandoned space station and idyllic homestead create a stark contrast that highlights this idea between orthodox and progressive forms of Soviet society/ideology. Jumping the line that is between is a challenge in of itself. And this is clearly shown through Henri Burton's scenes, as well as some of the conversations in the space station. There are clear lines between the characters that can be seen like this political/societal divide.

This was a really interesting movie, definitely thought provoking, definitely had me confused at times. However, was good nonetheless. Overall, 8.6/10

I am the last guy in the world that you wanna fuck with. - Frank

The Sleep Goblin took hold of me tonight unfortunately. Kept really dozing off into deep sleep. I am so sorry Anel, I was quite tired and have become like an old man and just let the sleep take me. Apart from that, pretty good, not as good as a it from when I first watched it at Golden Age alongside 'The French Connection'. Still really beautiful and deep in its dark and blue colours. Definitely feels like 'Heat' before 'Heat'.

James Caan is pretty good, not amazing but sometimes really over the top where as Anel puts it "quite obnoxious" to which I also agree on. The "heist" and robbery scenes are really good, especially the last one with the melting pole. Those sparks really woke me up for the last act after that, which was very handy.

I mean this was a good watch, not overly new but still quite enjoyable at it's moments. Particularly the beginning, ending, and robberies. Not as good as say 'The French Connection' - I still think about that double feature from time to time.

You always stop at the same part, when it's very beautiful. Interesting. - Alexandria

To start off - this is my 700th movie on Letterboxd, and I couldn't have chosen a better movie to celebrate.

A flawed cult classic that is often pushed to the side. This movie is visually beautiful, a near-on-par with 'Lawrence of Arabia' with some of the shots. Much like 'Kagemusha', all the colours have been paid and used in this movie. Many of the exotic locations across the globe just add to this grand experience - especially watching this rerelease presented by Umbrella Entertainment. I had been waiting for quite some time to watch this, and this was well worth the wait in my opinion. Watching all the vibrant colours and interesting yet playful story in a cinema is a treat.

In of story, this definitely operates like 'The Princess Bride'. A story within a story. However, this is definitely much darker compared to the later. Themes on death, betrayal and manipulation seem to infiltrate such a wonderous story. At the same time, the playful nature of telling the story was good. Constant detail changes, and Alexandria's own interpretation facilitates how storytelling can be drastically altered given the situation. Now, most consensus was that this movie was meant to be serious and unwavering - this was never the case. I didn't expect this movie to be serious in its storytelling or structure. You're telling a story to a young child, of course it's gonna have its mishaps and flaws. What matters is that it provided an entertaining story - to which it did. Emotional highs and lows swing throughout the movie, whether how "stupid" or irrational it may be. I felt connected with a good lot of the characters including Roy and Alexandria.

What I wasn't expecting was that this was a love letter to both modern and old cinema. Since the movie does surround the old action stunts and Charlie Chaplin era of Cinema - Watching the old clips and even the old tricks used during that period was nice. Particularly the montage (you know where in the movie I'm talking about) was just sensational especially with the music choice. Just shows how far cinema had advanced from the 1920s. And frankly, this works really well with this movie's constant message on storytelling and the imagination.

This is a beautiful movie both visually and structurally, and I know a few people won't agree with me on this. And that's ok, I'm fine with that. I got to watch this at a cinema, The Ritz nonetheless. Having witnessed this, especially after the initial, opening stigma - I'd say this was a really good movie if you want to enjoy what movies are and to have a laugh. This has become another favourite for 2025.

Yeah, but, John, if The Pirates of the Caribbean breaks down, the pirates don't eat the tourists. - Dr Ian Malcolm

Always a blast watching this. Always scares the living shit out of me at points. Like really, this was meant to be a 90s action sci-fi movie but it straight up has horror elements sprinkled like the book. Now mind you, I did have a headache during this, but for the most part was able to keep it controlled.

Apart from that, this was quite worn. Loads of scratches and jumpy frames, this print has seen better days. Even the ending few moments were slashed - jumping straight to "Sam Neill" Credit card. Not even poor Spielberg was safe from it. In of an actual audience experience, lots of kids, even more so from last year. Which was relatively nice, they were behaved. Also - props to the dad behind me explaining what 35mm was to his kid, the love for film (hopefully) will carry on into the next generation.

Terrific, I never made it with a Martian before. - Loren Lukas

Thanks Gerard for lending me your copy, as well as to Aidan for having this copy in the first place. Having seen 'The French Connection', 'The Exorcist', 'Sorcerer', and 'To Live and Die in LA', this was another good Friedkin movie. It's definitely more graphic with its story being centred around the Gay community. And as you know, I'm not a huge fan of graphic material, some instances maybe but definitely not 'Hustler White' levels - that stuff was pornographic. With that, Al Pacino is fairly good in this, definitely one of his more timid roles. Compared to 'Heat' or 'Godfather', definitely more timid.

Getting more into the Giallo horror/thriller genre, this had been recommended to me as a "distant form of inspiration" that can be traced back to Argento. As such unfortunately, I wanted something similar to Argento in this movie, but it's an American Cop police, something Friedkin is surprisingly good at. And as I've said before I CRAVE MORE ARGENTO . As a side note, that ending had me shocked, definitely didn't assume that would happen.

As such, Razorback is one of these "stops" or movies. First off - it's colourful as it can get. I don't know who done the colour grading but that man needs an honorary mention. Whatever you end up doing, love it. - Alfredo

What is cinema? Is it the movies that we grow up on? Is it the people that we meet who share such a deep connection with it? Or is it purely movies and the condition of the artform? I'd say it's all three, and many people would agree with me. How many people you'd ask? Enough to fill Hayden Orpheum's Cinema 4, it's largest venue. When this was first announced on the website, I stupidly thought that a small crowd would show up. By the time the movie started, nearly every single seat had been taken, just to see this movie. It's such a rare screening amongst cinema circles here in Sydney. Having finally watched in a cinema has made me realised what sort of movie this was.

Cinema Paradiso is the penultimate love letter to the medium and to those who are involved with it. Regardless of background or anything. I always have to choke back tears whilst watching this movie. Everything, from the personal connections to film, the spaces and/or environments and the movies themselves, is so perfectly depicted here. Spending nearly every single day going to a cinema, I feel very connected to this movie, hence it being #5 in the Top 10.

Having seen hundreds of other movies, and continuously watching even more in the coming future, I've grown up around movies and more recently cinema. This to me, is a perfect movie, alongside 'La Haine', alongside '8 1/2', alongside 'Lost in Translation', and finally alongside 'Apocalypse Now'. You have to see it to believe it. Especially in a cinema, where movies are truly meant to be played.

Overall 10/10

I can feel death in this room! I feel a presence, a twisted mind sending me thoughts! Perverted, murderous thoughts... Go away! You have killed! And you will kill again! - Helga Ulmann

I crave more Argento. This was great. The opening alone really sent shivers down my back. The thin white credits, Goblin's plucky score, and the editing really emphasised the movie's sinister premise and nature. Especially when the score would continuously build until either a payoff or a gruesome murder. However, in saying this I do feel that the music did interrupt the tension with fast action-movie'esque scattered here and there. If you were to remove those musical parts, I reckon the tension and fear would greatly amplified with the audience.

The story itself was good. Definitely some plot holes that I wanted to see get answered by the time the movie finished. But alas, wasn't the case. Apart from that, a really intriguing murder story that kept me guessing which is always a great sign. To have your audience mislead on the story seems to be one of the best things about this movie, and if you know what you are doing, you can be very close to solving who the murderer is before it's revealed.

Speaking of revealing, Shit a BRICK was this gory, even more so for 1970s horror movie. The kills especially we're a bit strange yet very very effective in capturing what a sadistic the killer is. This was a really great experience, watching it for the first time in a cinema with friends.

Overall, 9.4/10

I gotta change my shirt, it's sticking to me. I'm sweating like a cunt. - Don

Pure fun. That’s all I can say about this movie, even on a second rewatch. This movie is something else, action, gore, comedy, and a very short runtime (compared to others) - I don’t know how else to describe this movie. Like before Winstone and Kingsley are fantastic, both in their own rights. But again, Kingsley is just pure insanity on screen.

Watching this with friends this time round is something else. Some of these friends have y even seen this movie, which just surprises me. But at the same time I’m very glad that they got to watch this on print, with a relatively small crowd. On top of that, I’m also very glad to see this on print, the first sorta 5min were out of focus but I think it’s the print or a quick correction.

This being the first “cinematic event of the year” for the Ritz Crew, I’d say this was a very good first movie for that. Definitely one of the more fun experiences this year. Also I was quite drunk before the movie started and somewhat during it, so it just added to the experience.

Turn it off! Turn if off! TURN IT OFF! - Jake VanDorn

This year's 'The Monkey' has a parody poster from this movie. That's sorta how I knew about this movie, as well as Aidan's comment on Schrader's film. So, once again, without watching it prior, bought it straight off the shelf at HUM on King. And to be honest, this was a good movie, not the best of this year, nor 'Running on Empty' levels though (thank God).

This being my second George C Scott movie, the first being 'Dr Strangelove', Hardcore is a slightly odd movie. I guess it's because of it's pure 1970's filmmaking and story tropes. As many people describe this movie, it's 'The Searchers' set in the sex-filled city of Los Angeles. And I guess, I'll have to keep that in mind when I get around watching 'The Searchers' either at home or at Ritz (part of their Classic Matinee Program).

On another note, this was a really really good late night watch. I was tempted to view it during the day, but I don't think it would do it justice. So night time added another layer to the experience. Now, I kinda want this movie to play at a cinema, and see what it's like on a larger screen and with a crowd. Thanks Aidan and Gerard for bringing this movie to my attention.

Our entire life is a punishment. - Mickey Barnes

An alright watch. A fun watch as well with friends. Having seen this trailer EVERY SINGLE TIME when going to any cinema, this movie definitely felt overhyped. And for the majority, I never gave a shit about the hype, and had nothing in mind just before I sat myself down at Events George Street.

It's an interesting concept, using clones to do the dirty work. I mean this movie has political commentary written all over it. From Mark Ruffalo's character being an almost copy-paste of the Orange Muppet in the White House, to subtle connotations to social structure and the working classes. There's also straightforward themes of colonisation, and the idea of being the "greatest race" or "Ubermensch" (If you read Nietzsche).

For a Sunday morning watch, this was nice, was fun with friends. Would I say this movie has been overhyped? - Absolutely. Is it still a good, or at least an enjoyable movie? - Yes.
