watched this completely as intended, on my ipad.

i know halloween has its shooters but i think freddy and this movie specifically are the best out of all of the og slasher characters/movies. there’s just so much to really dig into with this and the concept of a guy who can get you in your dreams is so chilling because sleep is inevitable.

this and alien were one of the first movies i watched when i first started exploring the horror genre and i always come back to this and still feel totally amazed by its craft by the time the credits roll. this is the type of movie that makes me feel that movies are magic feeling. such a wonderful piece of art.

going to make it my personal mission to introduce this movie to as many of my friends as possible. my 4k blu ray is gonna for real get played hundreds of times.

this film is so deeply rich and beautiful. a very tender reminder that life really is beautiful and it doesn’t matter if you’re just a teacher, bookshop clerk, nurse, street performer, famous dancer, or even an ant; your life contains multitudes. hundreds, thousands, and even millions of thoughts, interactions, feelings, experiences, all deeply personal and unique to making who you are.

i thought the structure of the film was particularly profound, it reminds me of the kierkegaard quote, “life can only be understood backwards, but it must be lived forwards,” nothing in our lives particularly makes sense, but once we see ourselves, or rather, who we were and how it led us to make the decisions we make today, then we can understand what led us here.

very proud of mike flanagan, and am deeply invested in seeing if he’ll continue to make films (or television) that is not horror based. i’ll him either way.

JOHN WICK-A-THON:

this is actually the first john wick movie i’ve seen, i saw it in theaters upon its release with my boyfriend who loves this franchise. i agreed to go to see rina sawayama on the big screen (love her sm and have met her irl !!!) and also because i drag him to see so many movies the least i can do is let him do the same.

i liking it but not really understanding what is happening too much, but now that i have the full picture my god is this truly a phenomenal film. a beautiful love letter to the medium itself, but also elevating the action genre to a new level. so gripping, thrilling, but also rich and complete with storytelling and pathos.

i can’t help but worry what john wick chapter 5 is going to be. the man is literally dead…

JOHN WICK-A-THON:

john has always been referred to as the boogeyman or baba yaga, but i feel like this is the film where he really starts to reach levels that make him mythical or a demon that cannot be killed. the dramatics of the fights and injuries are stretched to their limits in this one. it starts to make the film as a whole feel more messy. despite what was probably countless hours of choreography, it’s so over-the-top ridiculous that it leans into its own comedy a bit too much for my liking. the series has always had its comedy, but it feels a bit out of place in this one.

i wish i knew more about theology to really connect this story to its heavily implied religious allegories and themes.

john wick-a-thon is almost over, just one more to go.

okay we are cooking now. pretty electric and so filled with wrath. there’s quite a few set pieces in this that are so stunning, it contrasts well with the onslaught brutality happening within them. learning more about this universe i think has helped create something more special than just guy-gets-revenge. things are getting complicated !!

not that the first one didn’t really have it, but i love the heavy leaning into religious iconography and parallelism through its story telling. really fascinating !

i think this film’s reputation and its following sequels amplify what is actually happening here. it’s still very thrilling and action packed, but not as fantastic and i thought it would be.

it’s very clear that there is a ton of potential with this and i guess a ton of others saw that which is why there’s now 4, almost 5, john wick films and 1 spin-off film.

i when this movie came out and feeling at least indifferent about it, but my god this watch was almost impossible to do. there’s so much in this that does not work at all. almost all themes explored don’t go deep enough, or the film itself contradicts them.

one of the most egregious is the commentary on how big corporations ruin almost everything they touch meanwhile the very existence of this movie is nothing more than a cash grab (contradiction #1) that is filled with very clear and blatant product placement (contradiction #2).

there are almost no characters here to root for except for the dinosaurs themselves. how on earth the characters in this franchise keep deciding to go back to these islands is beyond me.

all that said, this is probably the hottest jake johnson has ever looked so at least we can thank this movie for that.

it’s not that i don’t like eraserhead or that i think it’s bad in any means, but this being the followup is something truly spectacular. they actually feel so related despite this being an adaptation of a book about a real man.

eraserhead also features a child that is deformed, albeit a metaphor for anxiety surrounding parenthood or having a nuclear family. feeling ostracized or disgusted with because of their appearance, also without a motherly figure involved. i can’t help but feel curious about what drew lynch into this story so much to adapt it.

the elephant man’s description led me to believe it would be a sad film, and don’t get me wrong it was, but it also held so much comion and humanity for the subject matter. i teared up many, many times mostly on the moments when john is treated so kindly and you can tell it means so much to him. a deeply beautiful exploration of humanity, while also showcasing lynch finding his footing for his overall style. reminds me a bit of wes anderson’s rushmore where you can see the bits and pieces of what would eventually be his signature in filmmaking, but it’s not quite there yet.

the way this is filmed, the set design, costume and makeup, it all is so incredibly convincing for the time period, i truly felt like i was watching something of that era in london, rather than an 1980’s film. truly something so special here.

—- also unrelated but in my theater screening the girl in front of me was on her phone for like 85% of the movie and she was looking at the movie on letterboxd and was even reading the reviews, then switched to the wikipedia article for this film 😭 like cmon do that after ?! why are you on your phone in the theater anyways 😭 so inconsiderate and rude

it’s all come to this. every mission, every job, every villain, every new team member, and every mask… all to one final showdown, the final reckoning.

i spent most of this film holding my breath, tearing up (and even crying three-ish times), cringing, gasping, and grinning. a truly gripping action thriller that is so over-the-top, edge-of-your-seat action packed that it allows for me to glaze over some of the unnecessary exposition of previous installments. none of the other mission impossible films do this, it’s not up to the filmmaker to remind the audience of previous installments, they are perfectly capable of reminding themselves on their own. it didn’t bother me as much as others because of the action sequences.

i watched all of these movies for the first time about a month before this showing, with the exception of the first movie, i saw that one about a year ago. i am so beyond happy that i decided to watch all of these in preparation for this final one and not miss out on this theatrical experience. it really does feel like tom cruise is the last movie star actively trying to preserve real filmmaking. helping create a whole two movies about how ai truly is evil and cannot be controlled by anyone while creating authentic set pieces where he is actually performing the stunts is such a testament to how he feels about filmmaking and art in general. as much as this is a popcorn action flick, it still has merit in the world of film and i’m so happy i experienced this.

i showed up to the party about 15 minutes before it ended, but damn it’s the best 15 minutes of a party i’ve ever experienced.

other than deadpool and wolverine this is probably the most i’ve heard my theater laugh in i don’t know how long. the humor is ridiculous and over-the-top which was to be expected even from me who hasn’t seen anything tim robinson is in except the 55 HAMBURGERS 55 FRIES 55 TACOS clip i’ve seen on twitter. the guy sat directly to my left was laughing so hard that he was nearly screaming from how loud he was, slapping his knee, and clapping at points. im glad he thought this was the funniest movie in existence.

i didn’t particularly laugh aloud too much (this was actually pretty frightening but in a good way) but there is one part that made me actually laugh aloud but it wasn't even a joke it was just the set design.

going back to this movie feeling frightening, tim robinson’s character, as extravagant and caricature-y as a bro who just can’t hang is at such a level where it felt like an uncanny, yet relatable character. i mean, who doesn’t just wanna feel accepted even if they're a little weird? i think i only feel this way when i try and hang out with straight guys, i have like no idea what the hell to talk with or act like with them. also kinda reminded me of how crazy i was in middle school before i knew i was gay and had a crush on my best friend but didn’t really know what it was. it lowkey felt like watching a dramatized version of myself on the big screen, but not in a good way.

anyways, after the movie, i went to take a selfie with the poster (something i do for all my screenings) but there were two bros who were in my screening taking a pic there too. they asked if i could take a pic for them and i agreed. i took a couple pics and when i handed his phone back to one of the guys, i asked “what did you think?” meaning what did they think of the movie, but they assumed i was talking about the pics and one said “im sure they're good” and it was very awkward and i instantly felt like craig which made me want to cringe. so that was fun!

anyways, movie was pretty great, would recommend seeing it !

very bleak but in a way that is unexpected. i’m very new to “slow cinema” but i found this really impressive and much more impactful because of the prolonged, lingering shots and sequences. it’s never been so imperative to not only view a film about this subject matter but to make one as well. frustrated, aggravated, compelled, and maudlin are all emotions/feelings i had when viewing this. women should have autonomy over their bodies, and doctors who wish to help them should be able to do so without punishment, scrutiny, or being ostracized.

wonderful film, but i do not think i can stomach watching it again. very emotionally brutal when facing the reality of the situation, and even applying it to an american viewpoint/perspective.

water is overwhelmingly powerful. it has the power to help create life for essentially every living thing on earth, but water also has the power to destroy. the way water is explored in bring her back is something i cannot stop thinking about. cathy is ultimately killed from drowning, causing laura’s insurmountable grief and relentless ion to bring her back by any means necessary. andy and piper’s dad dies when he is in the shower, ending andy’s abuse, but also starting his and piper’s grief from losing their dad regardless of the complex relationship from the physical abuse, not only after attempting to give him R. a similar action to that of the satanic ritual; taking life (air/flesh) and inserting it into a body (breathing/regurgitation). andy is then fearful of showering, almost superstitious that he is doomed to repeat his dad’s fate (perhaps because he has hit piper before and perpetuated the abuse given to him from his father). andy is warned that piper will be in danger if she goes out into the rain. the same rain that also washes away the painted white circle around laura’s home that warns her of the radius in which oliver must remain inside to prevent his possessor from leaving his body. rain that in addition to that, fills the pool back up to aid laura in trying to kill piper. the same pool where laura releases piper to spend just a few final moments together with cathy, one last time.

water as an element is rooted in cyclical nature. liquid to gas to solid, back to liquid, forever to repeat. abuse can also follow a cyclical pattern. many victims can find themselves in abusive situations time and time again, much like andy having his ab replaced by abuse from the foster care system. the circular flow of water, and abuse, along with the visual imagery and sometimes camera work showing the audience various circles, it all comes back around. it’s a hard cycle to break, abuse kills, and even when people can escape, just like water returning to a liquid state, the tears will flow.

i really enjoyed bring her back, there were some scenes that truly left me disturbed, namely oliver eating the knife and wood table (teeth stuff really gets to me). ultimately i found this to be so incredibly maudlin, which isn’t what i was expecting but still thoroughly enjoyed. this felt like a very calculated film and i was pleased that i could feel all of the work that was put into it. the performances were great, i suppose i can forgive sally hawkins for declining to return to paddington 3 if she’s going to knock out a role like this. i also liked how they ever so slyly slipped “talk to me” into the dialogue of this film without it feeling unnatural.

really enjoyed it, would love to revisit this and talk to me very soon. a great first scream unseen for me!

forever enamored with how phenomenal this film is for me personally. from the festive fall aesthetic to the feverish rabid canines, there’s so much here to find fascinating. for such a fleeting runtime (fewer than 90 minutes), this film accomplishes a teeming amount for a full narrative without leaving me feeling famished, begging for more.

despite the film flowing from fiendish felonious foxes committing pilferage from unforgiving farmers to exploring flawed familial relationships and friendships or deforestation, subjects i can’t (fully) say i’ve felt or experienced myself completely, the film does feel familiar emotionally and resonates for some reason.

one of my favorite aspects of this film is how even if it’s an adaptation, it’s flawlessly fitting within wes anderson’s fervently focused, but flamboyant style and influence. this feels like a wes anderson film, not a roald dahl book frankenstein-ed to life.

a nearly flawless film that’s forevermore clearly a fan-favorite and obviously personal favorite to me.

“I’m lost,”

this is my first time revisiting lilo & stitch since my childhood and i’m kind of baffled at how leisurely i would watch this back then. of course childhood innocence and ignorance is bliss, just the silly alien dog movie (although as an adult stitch is soooo cat coded).

it’s absolutely no surprise to me that this film is such a knockout because of the sanders and deblois 1, 2, punch (who would go on to make two other movies that i am utterly in love with; how to train your dragon and the wild robot). i am also a huge sucker for the found family theme (unless it’s rupaul saying “you know? as queer people, we get to choose our family” for the 200th time on drag race).

this movie really gets to me because i was the weird kid in my family, i never experienced any familial bullying or intense school/societal ostracism, but i always being faced with confused or disgusted faces when i would talk about my interests, it’s easy to feel empathy for how alone lilo feels and how she is just as lost as stitch eventually feels.

this movie s batman: mask of the phantasm on a list of phenomenal animated movies that accomplish a ton for their narrative within a sub-90 minute runtime.

when i was in community college, i was taking some art history courses and for one of them the professor asked me if i’d be interested in volunteering to take notes for another student in the class that requested it with their individualized education program (iep). i was asked personally because this professor was my advisor and i had a few classes with her before.

at the time, i was still taking handwritten notes and i always strived for perfect grades, especially for my art history courses because that was my main concentration in school and eventually became my minor at university, so i thought this would be no issue at all. the school would provide me with carbon copy paper so all i needed to do was take my notes as usual and then tear off the back copy for the other student. i confirmed that i would be more than happy to volunteer for this and i couldn’t wait for class.

on the first day, my professor introduced me to who i’d be writing notes for. his name was gideon and he was deaf. he had an interpreter with him that was appointed to him from the college and she was a great liaison for the communication between us. i even found out that my professor also knew asl because her best friend (also a professor at the college who taught music classes — i ended up taking jazz history with him and it was tough as nails!) was married to a deaf man. i was now introduced to a world that i had never paid attention to because i am a hearing person.

over the course of the semester gideon and i grew closer and eventually our conversations went strictly from professional to more casual due to his extreme friendliness and my curiosity about asl and deaf culture. he eventually shared with me a facebook group he put together for social events for those that are deaf or heard of hearing (hoh). i ed and told myself to go to the next one. i went and i felt so completely out of place. everyone sitting at different tables in that fast casual restaurant all g, not very much speaking involved. just that one single event, it nailed it for me that feeling so completely out of place and so unaware of what anyone was communicating, is exactly how gideon felt all the time.

since then, i made a bigger effort to learn as much asl as i possibly could during that semester so that i could demonstrate to gideon that i truly did care and didn’t want to be an audist, or at least try to unlearn any audist behaviors i was exhibiting. i’d share with him new phrases or words i’d learned and he would help me with my g.

i learned a lot about deaf culture that semester and i really wish i could end this review by saying i kept at it and am fluent in asl, but after that semester, it wasn’t long until i moved away and didn’t have much motivation to keep studying. it’s never left me how much i didn’t know about deaf culture, and frankly still don’t know too much about.

this documentary really highlights a lot of those key concepts i learned from gideon and i really think that everyone should watch this at least once. it’s extremely compelling, wonderful storytelling, and of course the sound design is so well done. blew me away.

matilda is one of those really strange movies where it feels like a perfect movie, but you know it’s not a masterpiece in the cinematic art form. perhaps it’s the nostalgia talking, or maybe i’m onto something. definitely a staple in the greater sense of american cinema, more closely related to wacky, children’s stories and not the great “oscar bait” period dramas. the delicate balance of basically so over the top child abuse (that it circles back to extremely silly) to the tender love and iration to the little ones, matilda feels like a wonderfully warm heated blanket with a bowl of hot soup on a cold, snowy winter evening.

also if for some reason this were to get a remake (god please no) sarah paulson would be such a wonderful miss honey.

“alone, but not lonely,”

two wolves. carefully stalking their prey. aware of the other’s existence, occasionally aware of the other’s presence. complete packs and all. two wolves after each other. nothing more important than making sure all enemies are gone so they can continue their hunt for their own prey. they chase each other and lose one another, and the cycle repeats until running is not enough. the territory is not big enough for the two to coexist. two wolves instinctively ready to sink their teeth into the other’s throat. killing is not a thought to them, it is in their dna, instinctual. through the barking, clawing, and biting, these two wolves know that this fight will wear them down. they are a match made together and there is a level of respect and intimacy that comes with meeting your match. despite this, it is nothing personal, it’s all nature… survival of the fittest.

captivated by the duality and mirroring in this that mann has brought to life so brilliantly and loudly. aptly named heat, this film feels hot, sweaty, gritty, dirty, and bloody. it’s as beautiful as it is tragic, what more could you ask for?

i’m forever enamored with lynch’s exploration of love and power’s relationship in his work. lost highway, in my interpretation, is exploring these two along with some other closely related themes like lust and obsession.

the idea of these men all believing they have ownership and/or power of the women they’re involved with whether through marriage, secrecy, or coercion, ultimately being and leading to their corruption and demise is satisfying to some extent, but unfortunately is not completely due to the fact that the women are either discarded and ignored or quite literally murdered. regardless, the men can kill each other all they want for these women, but as alice puts it clear as day, they will never be theirs.

lust can make us act completely out of character, but so can obsessive love. if i cannot have you, no one can.

from what ive heard, this feels like a baby step towards mulholland drive, im curious to see how that works compared to this film.

i come back to this movie every now and then when i don’t really know what to watch, but i did a double feature of the perks of being a wallflower and this. however i watched the director’s commentary for this one. it’s always so fascinating understanding just how meticulously calculated films are. i always try to that everything we see is on purpose, nothing is on accident, but i always underestimate exactly what this means. this is only the second commentary ive seen, i need to watch more.

this movie meant the world to me when i was a teenager. probably the first time i felt so incredibly seen and heard that even if i generally had a good life, i could still be happy and sad at the same time. i was grappling with my queer identity and suffering from anxiety and depression all while self medicating with opiates and foreign pills i was buying online. i watch this movie every now and then and read the book even less, but it still always comes to me fondly. as i’ve grown and my problems have changed and morphed, this film is always a reminder of where my life was and how things ultimately have changed and that if i could get through all of that, i can get through whatever im going through now.

the film itself has some clunky dialogue, and it definitely feels very 2010’s “indie” coded, almost like it meant to be converted to gif format to be reblogged on tumblr to death (which is did religiously), but i don’t care. it means so much to me and i wish i could write back to charlie and let him know that i still think about him even if he stopped writing to me.

all that being said, i thought the camera work in this was pretty good, and the choreography was decent, and the visuals were touch and go. narratively, this felt very much like the same as it would be if it were a hulk movie? superhero guy who can’t control his powers… needs his friends to calm him down…. except for depression instead of rage.

“when this kind of fire starts, it is very hard to put out. the tender boughs of innocence burn first, and the wind rises, and then all goodness is in jeopardy.”

i saw this film three days ago and i've been waiting for something in my brain to happen to coherently write a review for it. i don't think that will be happening anytime soon.

back in february, my boyfriend decided to show me twin peaks. the very unfortunate catalyst for this decision was david lynch's death a month prior. he's seen it before and for christmas last year, i got him the complete blu-ray set. we began watching the show leisurely, and all of a sudden my local indie theater decided to have a rollout event dedicated to lynch and his filmography. they would be showing one of his films a week in release order. may 2nd would be the weekend that fire walk with me would be playing. we now had a goal to completely finish the first two seasons before then, and we did it.

the show, as i have talked about in my review for the behind the scenes documentary, is so incredibly special and magical for a myriad of reasons. it feels like a show that i could revisit often and find new meaning and understanding of what exactly is happening, as i get older and become wiser in my age. i was fascinated with the show, but it still has it's problems. i'm with what appears to be the majority of people that began to lose interest once laura's killer is revealed and the narrative shifts away from her and her impact on the community. however, knowing fire walk with me was a prequel to the series and it's been given high praise with almost everyone i know, i was so very excited to see this film.

i truly do not think ive had such a visceral reaction to a film like this ever. once the film is finished setting up the beginning with the fbi and we move onto laura's final days before her untimely demise, i cried the rest of the runtime. sheryl lee is giving the performance of a lifetime here, breathing a full and complete life into laura palmer. a character that we have only known from a distance. a girl whose always on everyone's mind and tragic fate has decimated the community. we learn parts of her secrets within the show, her drug abuse, her sexual escapades at one eye jack's and the roadhouse, sneaking around with james. but this is when we finally see her actually doing these things.

actually seeing laura palmer, the actions she taking, the way her life is shrouded in darkness, pain, and suffering. it was completely unbearable. just even looking at her was enough to reduce me to tears and by the time we reach the credits, uncontrollable sobbing.

this film is really fascinating in contrast to the show, because it really does have all of the same elements that make the show, the show. however, you can really feel the restrictive weight of television that has been lifted off the production. this is extremely intense and grittier and dirtier and much, much more horrifying. i do not think i've seen anything more horrifying than bob crawling through laura's window with that slimy, devilish grin slapped on his face.

i do not think anyone other than lynch could have told this story of laura's final days. going from a young woman who has ended up in such a dark, tormented life to getting her relief once she realizes that the angels have not given up on her, even after her death. the moment is so holy, it conveys an overwhelming sense of relief for laura and the viewer that not all of it was in vain. laura is now free from her suffering, as we also are from witnessing it. dale at her side, a man who eventually would also never give up on her.

i have some thoughts about the parallels between ethel cain's story and laura palmer, but i will save those for a rewatch review or perhaps on the missing tapes.

i do not think i will ever really forget about laura palmer or twin peaks, this series really has impacted me in a way i didnt think it would.

pretty tough to follow up fallout which is arguably just a perfect action spy movie. dead reckoning does its absolute best to keep everyone on board with mission: impossible as a franchise. what i’m most fascinated by is the pacing in this film because those near three hours just flew by for me.

there are some things that i wasn’t a huge fan of, such as the “he’s right behind me, isn’t he?” type humor (mostly present in the car chase scene in italy) and the most obnoxious amounts of dutch angles, even for really tame scenes.
