The order in which I would introduce someone to Edward Yang's movies.

1982
He directs one short in this anthology film, which I think is kinda unremarkable so this one is also in the "bonus" category for completionists basically.

I personally don't love this one that much which is why it's last and starts the "bonus" category. It's interesting to see where he began, and parts of his style are here but I think it's underdeveloped and only for completionists.
I feel like this and Taipei Story are actually pretty similar. But whereas the previous film was a drama, this one's a satire. There's sadness in feeling lost, but there can be a humorous absurdity to it too.
With the rapid modernization of Taiwan, these characters find themselves out of place, like the world around them moves much quicker than they are. There's some melancholy comfort to be had seeing lost characters like these.
My personal favourite. This one's a long and detailed portrait of a Taiwan that's long since gone. I put this here because it gives some historical context for later films like Taipei Story. The runtime is daunting but given the right mood, it's so easy to get lost in this world.
A comedy! Lighten up the mood after Yi Yi. Also a crime thriller so leads quite nicely to the next film I think.
Start here because I feel this film does a good job of introducing someone to Edward Yang's stylistic elements while also being pretty accessible.
