Stop Making Sense

1984

★★★★★ Rewatched

This exists as its own thing, a perfect coalescence of film and music. Even if you'd seen it countless times and had it playing in the background while you were cleaning your house, that viewing would still hold the power to dwarf a number of live musical performances that you've seen throughout your life. It's that good.
I would've immediately fucked up and dropped that lamp.

Civil War

Even with trying to avoid the discourse around this before seeing, it was impossible to not pick up on the overwhelming frustration that a lot of people seem to have with Garland seemingly not taking some sort of stance or not really having anything new or profound to say given the subject matter. Knowing the premise and having seen the trailer I wasn't sure exactly how that would take shape, but it does become apparent pretty quickly that Civil War

Paddington in Peru

2024

★★★ Watched

An unenviable task to try and fully deliver on the highly anticipated sequel to the Paul King films. Paddington remains one of the most likable characters in cinema and a big adventure is a logical choice for the film. Yet everything felt too structured and forced in comparison to the world that King developed. Paddington in Peru is a perfectly fine and watchable movie, but lacks the whimsical charm that seemed to emanate from nearly every scene of the first two.

Went into this in the mood for and expecting a true gritty slasher and what I got was, this.
Kudos for attempting a full-on romcom/slasher mashup but this did not work for me.

After Hours

1985

★★★★★ Rewatched

I've now seen After Hours somewhere between 5-10 times in my life and I am pretty confident in saying that it is my favorite "all in one night" film, my favorite NYC film and on any given day my favorite Scorsese film. I feel like I am living this night with Paul Hackett every time I watch it.

Killers of the Flower Moon

David Grann's book is one of the best things I've read in recent years and one of the more enraging historical s that I've ever read. And the way that Martin Scorsese constructs a film narrative out of the content of the book is not only beyond impressive it is important.

It's important because this story encapsulates (especially when considering who these crimes were perpetrated against) so many of the principles used when founding this country and progressing through history.…
