Nicolas  Cage has range as an actor. He envelops the characters he plays in the roles he accepts. Here, in The Surfer, he refrains from full-on Cage- Rage, but we do witness an unraveling and eventual breakdown that the end result is eventually cathartic, yet also restrained more than I’d have liked. Not only do we get such a well-crafted, intense, frightening, and unsettling Horror movie, but we also get a well-made movie. If you’re looking for Horror, than this is it. This is such a rare, disturbing delight. A masterpiece in the justly-earned jump scare and sound design department— I cannot recall a Horror film that does either better, and I watch a lot of Horror.
