Nate’s review published on Letterboxd:
My big white whale. This is the film I’ve been SO close to watching for 14 years now and for one reason or another I just kept putting it off.
This thing started off as a straightforward action/thriller that gave me Tony Scott “Unstoppable” vibes and I was settling in for a fun action flick.
Turns out somewhere in here that Gyllenhaal is just on life as a brain… and apparently he loves his Dad… OH and of course the simulation he’s been in for the whole movie is actually a bunch of universes they’re creating and he’s been dying in them but now he’ll just posses another guys body forever while he bangs Monaghan. Like, I guess this other guy whose body he’s possessing is technically just dead now.
I had to look up one of the many essays on that ending to figure out what happened. Basically this thing could’ve ended on a hauntingly pessimistic note but it feels like the writers figured out a way to cram other stuff into it so that we could all leave the theater laughing and also not understand what the Hell we just witnessed.
