(this first section of the review was written the day after watching ainda estou aqui. i had all these thoughts in the shower and felt it was relevant to write down considering how much oscar buzz this film is rightfully getting. i know that it’ll get foreigner attention so i decided to put into words all the anguishes i’ve felt for years. the actual review i wrote with my most prominent thoughts after leaving the theater are under the asterisks)

watching a jonas mekas film feels like discovering a new meaning of life.

he has this ability to create a blank canvas, a white noise, a hypnotic rhythm that tricks you into believing you are *in* the film, but also that the film is *in* you. at a certain point, you realize you've spent the last forty minutes listening to a monotone organ tune, a buzz that doesn't go beyond a couple of (annoying) notes at a time. but you…

as i was walking to the theater, a girl in front of me had coordinates tattooed on her arm. i began to think which coordinates i’d choose if i were to tattoo them. i realized the only possible answer is my childhood home, that has been haunting my dreams since i was nine and had to move out. then, i realized it has been so long since i’ve last dreamt of it, and i didn’t know if that was a…

i don’t know how to explain it other than this is exactly the kind of film i’d expect paul mescal (because aftersun and all of us strangers) and josh o’connor (because mothering sunday) would make together. it’s melancholic and tragic and that’s not everybody’s cup of tea. however, i’m A Queer™️ who’s obsessed with keeping things archived because it’s inevitable that everything will disappear. it was my cup of tea.

that extra half a star was because of the ending.

I don't get the amount of hype surrounding this film. Travis is a dick. A manipulative, possessive piece of shit with no empathy whatsoever. He spends two hours caring for no one but himself even though he was being spoiled by his ing brother. He manipulated his son and Jane and the whole film surrounds the idea of him being a victim, that pisses me off so much.
The cinematography and art direction is great and all but what's the…
