★★★★ Rewatched

This movie is a lot of fun - some great laughs, it’s well-paced and didn’t feel too bloated or drawn out, very good performances (Sophie Thatcher in particular is excellent) and I really enjoyed it overall. I found some parts a little predictable and I don’t think it brought anything particularly new to the genre, but I had a great time watching it and I’ll definitely be watching it again.

“I mean, you need to work on your material…a killer raccoon? Be serious.”

Absolutely hilarious watch, one of the best worst films I’ve ever seen.

Monkey Man

2024

★★★★ Watched

Monkey Man is gritty, political, gripping, intense and it’s also mostly brilliant. Dev Patel, it goes without saying, is fantastic. With references to and inspiration taken from revenge movies like John Wick, which is literally name-dropped at one point (very tongue-in-cheek) yet it goes above and beyond simply paying homage or being an imitation. The fight choreography is great, if not a little messy-feeling at times during some of the lengthier action scenes. Brilliant to see Dev Patel bringing a story like this to the screen both in front of and behind the camera, and I can’t wait to see what else he’s going to do.

Expected it to be absolutely awful but I actually enjoyed myself. But minus 4000 stars for the delivery of “I’m making chocolate of course” that I still wasn’t prepared for, despite being in every trailer
