Conflicted on this one. While it’s obviously well made in regards to the overall film craft, there were a lot of decisions I did not like at all. Not sure I loved any of the casting choices, aside from maybe Willem Dafoe but even he is becoming played out, and does a caricature of himself. Nicolas Holt I thought was especially bad. Completely oppressive, ominous, raw, and disturbing on many levels. The color of the film is so sickly looking too with sort of drab desaturated greys and pallor greens and yellows coming from the skin. The subject matter, the dialogue, the long takes, it just feels very uncomfortable. The entire movie I was dreading what it was building to, and when the ending scene happened I was still completely blindsided and shocked. It’s very upsetting but it definitely completes the movie…
