A true oddity in the Disney Canon. Featuring studio-mandated animated segments that feel so disconnected from the main story of a young boy trying to raise a rambunctious lamb, So Dear to My Heart would almost certainly do better without them. However, there is a warmness to the film, perhaps imbued by Walt Disney's own personal connection to this story. Even my own bits of annoyance with the characters or the acting are overridden somewhat by the sweet, saccharin nature of this film. It feels like a lot of love was put into the making of this with the ultimate themes of love and care taking precedent, along with overt religious ties that don't feel too intrusive.

Burl Ives brings so much warmth to the picture, whether he's singing, dancing or just being a caring family member. His presence does wonders for propping this film up and bringing the warm feeling to it.

So Dear to My Heart has a number of drawbacks and is FAR from one of Disney's most compelling or memorable films (certainly not in the animation side of things), but it has a pleasant innocence to it that makes it much more palletable than most of the company's output in the 1940's.

The Eastern answer to Indiana Jones, Magnificent Warriors is about as dense as an action movie can be. A brisk 92 minutes filled to the brim with WW2 era gunplay, martial arts and Hollywood-esque spectacle, all with an adventurous spirit to it. Our protagonists are a fun, likable motley crew that stick together amidst their uphill battle against the Japanese army. Michelle Yeoh left me mesmerized as being one of the most badass, exciting action heroes ever. Motorcycle jumps, whip attacks, biplane battles, she did it all. Magnificent Warriors rips so fast through its action that it almost forgets to tell much of a story. But there's enough here to string together the mayhem, with a climactic city assault that feels like a beautiful bow that wraps everything together.

An important precursor of what was to come with Disney's now iconic merging of animation and live action. It's pretty fun in bursts (the penguin segment in particular was very amusing) with plenty of colorful animation and its impressive technical prowess. However, this really does feel like the Latin American propaganda puff piece that it was made to be. Its anthology structure gives it a pretty aimless feel and it is very disengaging when there's no story to invest in beyond visiting regions of Latin America with cartoon characters.

So I decided to try out something new and potentially fun using my local library's movie collection. In an effort to diversify what movies I watch, I'm going to pick a movie from a shelf at the library, watch it and then move to the next shelf and pick one from there and so on. To keep me in line with trying to explore some new stuff, I have a couple rules:
I cannot watch a film with the same director or the same genre as the prior two films. Additionally, I cannot watch a film that came out in the same decade as the prior two. This kinda forces me to reach out and try to get some new stuff in there. This Letterboxd list will be updated as I go through, continuously adding what I see just to see the cool stuff that I've gotten to experience.
To do this, I actually am looking at EVERY movie on a shelf and reading the back of it if I haven't heard of it to see what I'm interested in, writing them down and then picking from the list (also depends on if it's still checked in at library when I go to pick one). I'm also trying to avoid looking at reviews or anything about movies I don't really know anything about to go in as blind and unbiased as I can.
Overall, I hope to see some great films from this and diversify myself a bit in cinema!!!

• The 400 Blows

  The 400 Blows was a fantastic way to start this new little project of mine. The unfortunate tale of a youth in rebellion as his superiors try to control him is fascinating from start to finish. The struggles of childhood portrayed here still ring true today, making this film as effective as ever in resonating with all about the challenges of youth. The film is just about seamless throughout, and one that I can imagine will grow to one of my favorites over time. Timeless storytelling, a flawed but intriguing character under duress and wonderful visual work really help solidify this as one of the best feature debuts ever, as well as one I'm sure to revisit in the future.

• Aguirre, the Wrath of God

  Now that the holiday break has begun, I can fully dive into the stack of library films I have picked for my little project. After starting off incredibly strong with the 400 Blows, I descend into the madness and hopelessness of the ill-fated search for El Dorado. Herzog's film absorbs you into the harsh environment of the Amazon. From that first eerie shot of the foggy mountains to the constant isolation of the river, this film is an unrelenting visual journey. Klaus Kinski's vivid expressions amplify the maddening atmosphere, not needing much dialogue to convey everything he needs to. The pace is slow and its a very gradual unraveling, but Herzog never wastes a second during this relatively brief film. All in all, Aguirre: The Wrath of God is a really splendid second entry into the Great Library Movie Adventure and I am more than excited to continue to dive into the depths of cinema. However, unlike Aguirre, the riches are really there for me.

• Amadeus

  One I've been wanting to watch for quite some time since I first saw clips in 8th grade music class, Amadeus is so striking to look at that it's no surprise I've always had this drive to watch it, even before I was really into film. There's just so much to ire here, from the brilliance of F. Murray Abraham and Tom Hulce to the exceptional use of classical music throughout the film. Amadeus is an engrossing film, so effectively roping one into the madness of both Salieri and Mozart. They are two spectacularly written characters, filled with imperfection amidst their talents that plagues them in a tale of jealousy and faith among other things. Amadeus is a spectacular tale of two characters, with few other films diving into the psyche of one, let alone two, characters so masterfully. It is truly a masterwork worthy of its accolades and reputation, and one that much like its titular character, should be ed for years (and many years) to come.

• Amour

  Going into Amour, I was aware of the film's reputation and acclaim, as well as the acclaim towards Michael Haneke. Having never seen a Haneke film and knowing little to nothing about what Amour was about, I went in about as blind as I possibly could.

  I did not expect a film that felt so real in the most heartbreaking of ways. To see love at its strongest and most intimate challenged in such a tough way. To see a commitment to one's beloved that is so strong that it begins to tear right through him. Haneke's direction throughout creates an atmosphere of unease; silent with little more than the sounds of movement and the occasional play of the piano filling the rooms, as well as vast, turning a somewhat small living space into a large chamber through the static and drawnback camera. Coupled with a pair of brilliant performances from Jean-Louis Trintignant and Emmanuelle Riva, Haneke masterfully creates the uncomfortable environment for a challenge such as this. With creating this atmosphere, Haneke does linger for awhile in certain shots to really emphasize the mood he is going for, making it a bit of a demanding viewing in of one's attention. The general content of the film as well makes it an emotionally demanding endeavor as well.

  I do not know if it's something I will be revisiting again. However, I highly recommend experiencing this at least once. It's an emotional film showing the dedication and power that comes with love, but keeping it real and not forgetting the hardship that comes as well.

• Atlantis: The Lost Empire

  Despite growing up loving animated movies, especially Pixar and Dreamworks, the hand-drawn classics from Disney I never really got much of a chance to watch until recent years. This resulted in me missing the Disney animated features that didn't quite have the lasting legacy of films like the Lion King or Aladdin, such as this one. I've been curious about Atlantis for awhile, not knowing much about it but it seemed like it had the potential to be a fun adventure film. It certainly meets the mark there.

  I noticed right off the bat the different look of the animation in the opening sequence. During the rise of CGI animation, Atlantis was caught right in the middle, featuring a somewhat offputting blend of hand-drawn and CGI animations that isn't quite as seamless nearly 20 years after its release. The hand-drawn animation was mostly solid, with the biggest strengths being the gorgeous looking environments and settings; on the other hand, character models varied, with some looking odd and some looking great.

  One thing I did really ire about this film was a greater sense of danger than in other family films of this nature. Despite its inclusion of fantastical elements related to Atlantis, the adventure component of the film feels very grounded and somewhat dark at times for a family film. I appreciate that the filmmakers decided not to shy away from the danger and trouble that would be associated with a journey of this sort. It helps elevate the stakes and ultimately make each character's actions feel more important.

  Speaking of character's, Milo is one of the more enjoyable protagonists I've seen in animation lately. He's easy to root for and has an effective arc throughout.

  Atlantis: The Lost Empire never really captured my attention in the same way that other Disney animated films have. It's a unique entry in Disney's line of animated films, having a bit more grit than many of their other films and featuring a classic adventure feel in addition to its own artistic look. Atlantis is definitely worth a look for those who have yet to explore it, or one might never know what kind of gem they could find here.

• The Band Wagon

  There's something so satisfying about diving into musicals from the Golden Era. They're a dive into classic Hollywood, a dive into a world of color and joy and energy. The Band Wagon certainly fits the bill there, and my first Fred Astaire feature definitely did not disappoint. With lots of colorful and vibrant numbers throughout and a large group of spirited performers, the Band Wagon never loses its charm or fun throughout. Consistently funny and effortlessly whimsical, the film's playful nature makes it such an easy and relaxed viewing. The cast shines throughout, with the standout being the eccentric and artsy Jeff Cordova played by Jack Buchanan. Overall, getting to see this for the first time was a dive back into the magic and whimsy of classic Hollywood. It's not the most emotionally involved or the best musically, but it's an all-around success worthy of a bow.

• Beginners

  When looking at the case for this movie in the library, I almost knew right off the bat that this was one of the movies I would pick. Three phenomenal actors on the cover, along with Mike Mills at the helm, director of a movie I really loved in 20th Century Women. It takes some time to really get into this one, with the abrupt cuts, time jumps and some other odd edits making it a bit tough to connect with. But in the end, maybe it was all done in service of the arc of the solemn Oliver. Everything starts coming together as the film progresses as we begin to understand Oliver more, who is played wonderfully here by Ewan McGregor. In the end, I came to really enjoy the way Mills told his story of a man struggling to grasp long-term love from the lens of someone who witnessed a rejuvenation in the life of another. It's straightforward but effective and meaningful storytelling. Christopher Plummer is simply marvelous throughout, along with another excellent performance from Melanie Laurent. Beginners is a fun movie at many points, but perfectly restrained and knowing the right tone to hit throughout: an initial empty, somewhat somber feel before slowly letting inklings of joy throughout. Mike Mills is surely becoming a filmmaker I look forward to, and I hope to see more of his wonderful human tales.

• The Big Sleep

  After going through a small bit of Hawks' filmography awhile back, I knew I had to use this little project of mine as a means of getting this massive oversight on my part. Hawks films have some of the most exquisitely written screenplays ever with the Big Sleep being no exception. Bogart is rapid-fire, never failing with his slick delivery that can shift from intimidating to witty and back before you knew what hit you. His co-stars, especially Lauren Bacall, play as perfect companions to bounce around the wonderful wordplay.

  This has all of the hallmarks of the classic noir and is certainly fun to watch. The twists in the story, the moody and dark look, characters with questionable morality, a score helping to create that grimy atmosphere. Everything really comes together to create that classic feel.

  The Big Sleep comes as another wonderful film in Hawks' illustrious filmography and another one of his films with an incredible rapidfire screenplay. The film is somewhat broken up into two halves that don't seem to mesh together as well as I would hope, especially with how engrossed I was into the first hour of the film. Still, that second hour of the film is great filmmaking overall, and wraps up an all-around great film very nicely.

• The Black Pirate

  One of the earliest films to be released with color, The Black Pirate stands as a fascinating piece of history. It is very much a standard pirate tale with many of the classic tropes and elements associated with them. Walking the plank, buried treasure, plundering and swashbuckling among other things are found here.

  The film certainly has an adventurous feel, especially with extraordinarily charismatic performance from Douglas Fairbanks. His incredible athleticism and some of the stunts he performed were magnificent and awe-inspiring, and his expressiveness made him so enjoyable to watch. There are several fun action moments, particularly when Fairbanks' character single-handedly raids a ship and the first sword fight he engages in. It was also cool to see the iconic moment of Fairbanks riding down the sail by cutting through it with his sword.

  Outside of some of those impressive moments, there isn't a whole lot within this that feels particularly noteworthy. For the most part, it feels somewhat standard, but for the time, I can imagine how novel and fascinating this must have been. And for being a nearly 100-year old film, it's still quite enjoyable. It feels somewhat basic by today's standards, but it's certainly irable and plenty entertaining.

• Boy

  Being such a big fan of Taika Waititi, I got very excited whenever I stumbled upon this on the library shelf. I knew next to nothing about it and I was excited to find out what I was getting into. What I got was an incredibly powerful coming-of-age tale where a boy named Boy tries to reconnect with his eccentric father that has come back into his life.

  The cast is splendid throughout, especially the impressive young cast, with this being the first and only film for many. It has the same sense of humor that has enriched the rest of Waititi's directorial efforts. And with that humor comes a seamless balance between that and heart. He always knows the right point to drive right into the emotional core of the film, taking viewers on an amusing journey to that crucial moment. Boy is no exception, especially as we see Boy coming into his own and understanding the relationship he has with his father.

  It's no wonder that Waititi has become as popular as he has, seeing what films he made to get there. Boy might be his most sincere film based on what I've seen, and it certainly finds its way to hit hard.
