Yes, five stars. It’s an 18 hour movie directed and co-written by David Lynch. The adult characters act like children; sometime literally, sometimes they’re just unable to do much of anything. There’s a lot of humor, so much slow pacing that it would make Refn’s mouth water, and at least once per episode, an incident of pure horror. I’m so disappointed. There aren’t a lot of movies I genuinely look forward to seeing - especially in a theater, but this was one. The technical aspects of the film were amateurish; the dialogue recording was muffled, the relentlessly muddy, drab color palate got old fast, the framing of shots and what was included in those shots…. Never impressed. A 30 second overture? Why bother? Why bother with VistaVision when you’re just going to shoot unfocused dark jumpy closeups of…
Rewatched, and as expected this was even better the second time around. Scarlett J. in particular does so much with so little movement… it’s fascinating to watch. I wish there had been more Balaban, more Goldberg, more of the triplets and more of the relationship between the two kid scientists, but I don’t really want anything to be cut to make that happen. So I get what I get, which is plenty.
