Apocalypse Now

there has never been a time when Apocalypse Now has failed to give me chills for days on end. the epitome of anti-war, although this war serves its purpose mainly as an unnerving backdrop to a mission up these calm, dangerous river banks and into the dark unknown. ultra-hypnotic jungles filled with horrors, trepidations, sweat, slaughter. "the shit" - devoid of any morality in favor of rationalized macabre. absolutely surreal and confusingly dreamy. Marlon Brando, man. idolatry entombed in shadows…

this is the perfect horror movie to me and I will love Tobe Hooper until the day I die

the music? cmon dude yes
the atmosphere? got it
the killer? wears human faces
the less? is more

but honestly such a scary movie and one of my all time favorites. I first watched this entirely too young and it still affects me in ways I love

also props to the best final girl. she jumped out of a window not once but TWICE

pros: iconic rollercoaster intro, loads of fun in an oddly comfortable way, hilarious amount of suspended disbelief

cons: frankie cheeks

an absolute time capsule of 2006

one of my favorite opening scenes in recent horror memory.

there's a lot that I really like about this, from its aesthetic to its performances to an eerie score and some effective(!) scares. it just falls off hard for me in its third act compared to the first two. it's a good and very sound horror movie, but it's nothing groundbreaking like I hoped it would be. maybe that's my fault - it was impossible for me to not be…
