Burroughs: The Movie

On the positive side, this wealth of archival Burroughs footage, mostly from a secret stash owned by Genesis P-Orridge (of Throbbing Gristle and Psychic TV fame) along with interview segments from the then-contemporaneous early 1980’s (including his appearance on a 1981 episode of SNL) is priceless.  Nothing beats letting Burroughs’ sonorous and lilting voice numb you into state of drugged submissiveness.  I could listen to this guy for eternity.  His elderly rooftop repartee with Alan Ginsberg, along with reminisces of…

What a warm cuddly blast from the past.  I saw this in a mall theater near my house back in the day, with zero knowledge of Terry Gilliam, Monty Python, or…well…anything really.  I was in that decrepit terrifying middle-ground between 8th Grade and the start of high school, in semi-podunk Florida.  And I being delightfully suspended in an etherial English surrealistic playground that felt charming and alien-familiar and historical and strangely hilarious and dour and…ennui-ish.  And I didn’t know…

Sometimes our most undefeatable demons are the ones inside.

So, I’ll just state right off that I’m not a Marvel film nut.  While I enjoyed the occasional early films, once it all started morphing into the MCU I had to turn away.  Too marketed, too corporate, too you-have-to-see-all-the-prior-films-to-really-get-it.  Don’t even mention the Multiverse to me.

So, I’m pleased to say how much I enjoyed Thunderbolts*.  A return to a simpler story, where a group of we-hate-each-other misfits humorously find…

1/2 star for the title alone.  I mean…that’s a damn good title.

1/2 star for the mangled-morphed body-part live prostitute things in the estrogen serum freezer that help seek revenge on their pimp.  And all the rubbery decapitations.  And that Louise Lasser doing Louise Lasser cameo.

Otherwise…not nearly as good or creative as Poultrygeist: Night Of The Chicken Dead (2006).  Makes wretched ilk like Weird Science (1985) and Weekend At Bernie’s (1989) seem wistfully wonderful in comparison.
