although I didn't follow every plot detail and line of dialogue what fascinated me the most was this film's framing and shot composition. while it wasn't complicated or even exceptionally artistic - quite the opposite, really - every image seemed purposeful in a way, as if every scene had an intrinsic flow guiding it and leading into the next.
thus, this film - for me - is one of the most round and overall most fulfilled visions of a filmmaker I've had the pleasure of seeing this year, and one I'm sure is one of the most rewarding on a rewatch.

I can somewhat see why people liked this movie when it came out and why it has become a classic of the sci-fi genre, but for me it just didn't work at all. there are some good-ish elements that I enjoyed, but these are a) outweighed way more by the ones I didn't enjoy and b) simply don't come together to form a coherent whole.

there's not a single interesting character, the tone shifts every five minutes and there are…

this just felt entirely aimless; the film started, stagnated for 80 minutes and then finished with a wholly unsatisfying conclusion. overall, some aspects it touched on were genuinely interesting and I wouldn't be surprised if the book was an excellent read, but the storytelling here was just too disted to leave a lasting impression.

it was fine for what it was intended to be, I suppose, a tale about patriarchal society and the life as a girl under a religious militant group that heavily oppresses women. furthermore, it is competently made, from a technical standpoint. what held it back from being great, tough, was that it did not tell anything new. as tragic as these kinds of stories are, anyone who has watched the news in last couple of months is probably aware of the situation in afghanistan, and this short doesn't really add anything significant to this story to make it stand out.
