Milo’s review published on Letterboxd:
Dune Part Two makes the pieces click together. I did watch this in Paris with French subtitles including the Fremon bits, and my French isn’t great - but it’s still solid enough and I’ve read the books to be able to pick up on the context I was missing. And it helps Villeneuve is a master visualist.
Maybe the most I’ve enjoyed a Dune thing having DNF the series at Book 4? It’s hard not to ire a Big, grand sci-fi that’s faithful right the way through - but that carries across the novel’s weaknesses and it can often feel slow, sluggish - and lacks the emotional depth it needs to really feel like a classic. There’s nothing Frodo/Sam level here of emotional drama and that rendered the grand final act felt a bit cold, empty and boring. Some of the cast are spectacular but its all star collection of names is very much hit and miss, I didn’t buy the Emperor - Walken felt poor and Pugh felt a bit disted - even Zendaya unconvincing. Chalamet at his strongest - much improved over part one.
Never thought I’d say this but David Goyer pulls off an adaption of Foundation better than Villeneuve of Dune.
